Hello,

I have West Virginia Gallaher's but, I don't think it's a direct match.

I have John Smith Gallaher (1815-1892). He married Elizabeth Miller in 1851. They had William Mercer (1853-1875), Presley V (1856-), Mary Elizabeth (1859-1875), John L. (1861-), Maggie (1865-), Charles K. (1869-1931).

John Smith Gallaher was born in Berkeley County. He married in Preston County where his children were born. He likely died in Taylor County. He was a Tailor.

Vicki

Hi,

Thank you for the reply to my posting and for the information about James Gallaher.

I am researching the men of the 208th Pennsylvania in their memory and in honor of my gg-grandfather, Henry S. Werline of Co. D.

Here's what I've learned about James Gallaher:

JAMES W. GALLAHER, a son of Joseph (W.) and (Christina) Margaret (O'Shal or Oshall) Gallaher, the latter is still spared, was born in 1845. He was united in the bonds of matrimony in 1865, in Osceola, Pa., to Rachel (Emily) Carl (Carle), who was born in Cambria county, Pa., Oct. 29, 1848; her father, Karl Conrod, is deceased, but her mother, Lucy (Wils), still survives. As the fruit of this marriage eight children were born, Luther, Susan, Katherine, dec., Isabelle, dec., Ruth, William, Lucy and Silas, dec. Comrade Gallaher was one of the brave soldier boys to respond to the president's call for brave boys to don the blue. He was enrolled Sept. 7, 1864, as a private in Co. H, 208th Pa. V. I. He took active part in all the engagements of his command, including Petersburg and Richmond, and was granted his honorably discharge June 1, 1865, at Alexandria, Va. Our subject passed from the shores of time Sept. 8, 1895, in Cambria Co., Pa., death resulting from hemorrhage of brain. His widow resides in Coalport, Pa. Presidents, Soldiers, Statesmen - Volume II, H.H. Hardesty, Publisher, New York, Toledo and Chicago, 1898 (parentheses - added information)

James applied for a pension on December 24, 1891. He is buried in the Beaver Valley Cemetery, White Township, Cambria County. His widow applied for a pension on November 11, 1895.

I would appreciate any additions or corrections that you might make.

Do you happen to have a photo of James at any age?

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

David Houston Gallaher was married to Elizabeth Hagler daughter of Abraham Waden Hagler and Esther Nethery. Abraham Hagler 's father was John Hagler m to a Van Hoose or Van Hoosen?

Have you seen the book The Gallaher Clan by Shirley Hollis Rice? I haven't been able to get a copy of it. I would love to have that book. It is supposed to be really good. Also there was a man Floyd Crockett Stuart who wrote a paper about this family. This paper is in the Archives in Nashville. It is really long and difficult to follow, but has tons of info. I have seen it and just scratched the surface of it. Have you seen either of these?

My husband has a Houston line that was in Greene Co., Tn and connects to the same side of our family as the Gallaher.
It is interesting that I mentioned the Abel/McClure connection. Isabella's great niece married Wade McFall. Note Sarah Wade Gallaher. Also there is a Walker marriage in our Buster line in Greene Co. Her sisters daughter married the son of Susan Gallaher.
These families hung together.

He ran a stage coach business.
His son was David Lenoir Gallaher, CSA married Narcissa Elizabeth Dickson. David Lenoir was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness and Narcissa remarried AM Belsher.

Children were my ggrandmother Sarah Wade Gallaher m. James Walker Barton in Tishimingo Co Ms.

Molly Barton was my grandmother.

This is a thumbnail sketch of my people.
I need to correct some things for you. George B.'s wife was Sarah OATS not Oaks. I believe without proof that her father was David Oats who was scalped by indians probablty in Monroe Co., Tn He was in a record in Roane Co. in 1808.

John Abel uncle to our David of Wythe Co., Va.[to Roane Co., Tn in 1700's married Isabella McClure. She may relate to the one M: to Gallaher.

The Breazeale family came to Roane Co., Tn and connect to our family of Susan Gallaher through the Woods family.
I have a lot of their genealogy.

I only have 9 children fro 1st James and only 11 for George B. Can you show me the names .

The following is who I think is our line. Since he was a preacher he could have lived around many places. I have a large family I believe is theirs who lived in Roane Co. and other places. Charles Gallaher was in Roane Co. in 1825.
This has to be Susan Gallaher who married Elijah Lawson of Madison Co., N C
GENEALOGICAL ABSTRACTS FROM REPORTED DEATHS
THE LOUISVILLE AND NASHVILLE CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE
AND THE NASHVILLE CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE 1852-1856
By Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith
Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 1997
JANUARY-JUNE 1855
(Page 79)
NASHVILLE CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE 1855
February 8, 1755,[ I believe this is 1855] Page 82
SUSAN LAWSON d/o Charles and Julie Golaba, [ Golahar?] born Prince Edward Co., Va., August 9, 1787; moved to Hawkins Co., Tenn. 1796; md Elijah Lawson 1802 and he died in 1832, leaving her with 10 children; she died Nov. 6, 1854.
[ I believe this is a misprint and that his name was Charles Gallahar and not Golaba]
The dates and names are correct for our Susan who married Elijah Lawson.

Albert Gallaher

Am looking for any info on the death and burial of my great grandfather, Albert Gallaher. He was the son of William Gallaher and Mary Ann Smith and the brother of John Wallace and George James. He was born in Lafayette County, Wisconsin in February 1870.

The family went to Kansas and then on to Red Bluff, California where he married Eldora Curtis(s) Bedient, widow of Andrew Bedient. They moved several times including to Washington state and the last I know of him is in Idaho(1920 Federal Census).

Eldora died in 1929 and is buried in Red Bluff. I cannot tell if she was widowed at the time she died but her headstone simply indicates "Mother". So, I'm guessing Albert could have died anywhere in Idaho, Washington or California from 1920 on.

Thank you so much for this info....My mother was Mary Gallaher and I was born in May 1938, given up for adoption that same month. I seem to have hit a brick wall in trying to find any of the family members and I am just not sure where to go from here.

I really appreciate what you have sent me and will try to find something from it/

Anne Curran

Please tell me about Davidson Cty., Tenn. mentioned in a post. Was this the route most took to the northern states.
Trying to understand the route taken (1820's). Will try the Davidson Cty., Tenn. site also. Thanks.

West VA Gallahers

I am looking for Gallahers out of West Virginia, probably the Morgan, West Virginia area. My great-grandmother was Barbara Gallaher; her parents were Edward Gallaher (b. 1869) and Emma Widmeyer (b. 1869). Edward's parents are Joshua D. Gallaher and Anna, and we think Joshua's father might be named John. I know Joshua was in West Virginia, John may be from elsewhere.

Anyone? Anyone?

Thank you for responding. I will look at my stuff and see if I can find your Susan anywhere. My Gallaher's were from Tenn and George Burum Gallaher sounds right. Do you have any Gallaher pictures?

Dennis - if you are still out there, I'd like to make contact, as I am descended from one of the other Gallaher siblings who went to Putnam Co., IL. Have just discovered this. My Sarah Tigart/Taggart and two other widowed sisters supposedly went with brothers Thomas and William. Would love to share the little I have and learn of your sources. I'm not yet a subscriber to this list, though I am to the Taggart list.
- Sally Houston
