To Bill Gallant, Kathy Longhurst, Tami, Clarice: Have a large data base on this family. Matthew Jr. died in the Civil War, but no one has tried to find that record. Have several descendants who are from Washington Galland, and info on Eleanor also. There is an error on the year of birth for Abel Galland. It should read 1789. Clarice I am in touch with and she nowhas new data. Turns out that Matthew Sr. was a Loyalist during the Rev. War, and was shipped to Canada with many others. We have papers he signed while there. Looks like he left in a boat and his wife fell overboard and drowned, and he then came to Massachusetts and married Hannah Fenno. Her parents were Joseph Fenno Mary Allen, who were married 28 May 1755. Hannah and her sister Mary were both chr. 7 Sep 1759 at King's Chapel, Boston. Have never found the marriage of Matthew Galland Hannah Fenno, but their first child, Abel, was born in New Jersey (according to him) 9 Mar 1789 (not 1787), second child Isaac born 15 May 1791, Somerset Co., N.J. on the way to Ohio, where the family lived for a few years. Matthew is said to have been murdered about 1808/9 on the way back to Virginia (tradition ??).
We think Hannah Fenno died before that as their daughter Mary did not learn to read and write and the other children older were very well educated. Hannah Fenno was a Boston "lady" and educated. Matthew Galland could also read and write very well. Matthew had married Hannah Errin prior to his death. Next after Matthew Jr. was David born 10 May 1795 in Washington Co., Ohio, who married Phoebe Gandy 9 Oct 1913 in Madison, Ohio. And last was Mary, born 8 Sep 1798 at in Washington Co., Ohio. She married Abel Casto when she was 14 years old, 3 June 1812, Madison Co., Ohio, and died in Salt Lake City, 27 April 1870. They had 12 children but only 5 lived to be married.
Their son Matthew Galland Casto and his second wife Elizabth Daniels are my great grandparents through their daughter Emily Casto, b.23 Mar. 1863 in Manti,Sanpete,Utah, who married Moroni Hunt 11 Dec 1898 in St. George, Utah. They made their home in Monroe, Utah. Ina Hunt Tuft e-mail
