Michel's father was probably European. That's why it would show the haplo it does. It's his mother that was most likely native and the MTdna from his mother would not get passed beyond Michel. So an adoption isn't necessarily the case. Hope this helps you make sense of it.

I would love to see the proof of Michel Haché-Gallant being a Métis without question. I have seen and heard many of these claims before, including the baptismal record from the National Archives. As far as his mother being a native Indian, this still does not answer that question anymore than what Michel's actual birth date or birth place was. It is interesting that there is some inclination toward his mother being native as someone does scribe it in as "Eskimaude" on the birth certificate, almost as an after thought in reference to her (it does not even look like the same handwriting). Yet there is no real proof of that as we know virtually nothing about Adriénne Langlois's parentage except that she bears a French surname. There have been other baptismal records for other people that have had glarring errors and this was common in those days. Her surname may indicate that she was of French background, had previously married a man of the Langlois family, was herself Métis with a French father, or perhaps even orphaned and adopted by a French family with the Langlois name as it would be entirely unlikely that a native woman would bear a French name for other reasons. All of these things are entirely possible.

Keep in mind, even Nicholas Denys mentions little about Michel's parents and may have told his son-in-law Michel LeNeuf, Sieur de la Valiere at Trois-Rivieres that he thought she was native, but who really knows? I don't believe, as most historians do not, that the facts lead to Adriénne Langlois being a native Indian or that his possible father Pierre l'Arché had married another woman who was native. Genealogy is not an exact science by any means but facts are supported usually by the documents such as her birth records may show. Most of the evidence is circumstantial at best. And I don't believe that anyone is in any kind of denial about Michel's ancestry. I know that it would make no difference to me if Michel was of mixed blood. As a matter of fact, there are many Acadians who married into native families over the years and from that time in particular. I have often stated that if it were not for the native people most Acadians would not have survived the establishment of the original colonies.

Also, I see that a good deal of the data that is posted on Rootsweb by amateur genealogists is filled with holes. I have been doing this a long, long time. I see sometimes that the folks on Rootsweb, perhaps with the best of intentions make their own theories and then as time goes by they somehow morph into facts. I have seen many, many errors there. So there you have it. I would suggest that you contact Monsier Stephen White at L'Etudes Acadienns at the Universite du Moncton and ask his opinion. As far as we know, unless someother facts come forward, is that Michel was a French Acadian, caucasian man. To suggest diferently I would say that is fine, but prove it more significantly because I have not seen that evidence.

They remembered his first marriage but nothing as to why it ended and what happened to the baby (my grandfather). These are the gaps I am now trying to fill in.

I am descended from petit pas and lejeune as well, but it seems like whenever metis is mentioned there is controversy. Im an American. so i am not seeking status or anything, Im just very curious about my heritage through the Acadian branch of our family tree

In the 1940 census, she was 27 years of age -- giving a birth year of 1913, so the 1908 date might be right. She may have made herself younger on the census so as not to appear to be so much older than her husband.

Does her death record not have the names of her parents? Do you have her SS application which should provide more info.

Seems that they could have been married in Michigan, Wisconsin or New York (based on the 1940 census). Tracking down their marriage record should name parents.

Ah, I found her second marriage in California:

www.familysearch.org

name: Leslie Norman Owre
event: Marriage
event date: 20 Mar 1948
event place: Los Angeles, California, United States
gender: Male
age: 33
estimated birth year: 1915
father: Jack Owre
mother: Rachel Thomas
spouse: Mary Gallant Smith
spouse's age: 35
spouse's gender: Female
spouse's estimated birth year: 1913
spouse's father: Anthony Gallant
spouse's mother: Mary Gallant
page: 5
film number: 2116163
digital folder number: 005698778
image number: 02337

Actual image indicates that her birthplace and that of her parents was Prince Edward Island. She was french/candian and a naturilized citizen to the US. 1940 census has her living in Royal Oak Michigan with husband Marvel Smith(suppose to be Marvin)and my father Grayl K Smith. Census list her as having lived in Milwaukee Wisconsin previosly.. Marys death record says she was born 1908 but think this is wrong and possibly 1918-1923. Mary passed away july 1 1984 in Milwaukee Wisconsin but she had previously been living in Clifornia.. Please if you have any info on Mary or her family Please contact me @ troublesforme1962@yahoo.com Marys last name at death was Owre

would love to see the pictures. I don't remember much of my great grandmother but I do ermember calling her Mamie. My grandmother Mary Devault was one of her daughters. Most of my memories of going to boston was when my mom,Marjore White, used to take us to Chelsea to visit her relatives when I was in grammer school. Looks like our grandmothers were sisters, Hi cousin :)

I see this is an old post, but can provide additional details. Cardinal Richard Cushing celebrated mass for Judith (we called her Great Grandma Mamie) when she turned 100. My dad and his brothers served. He has pictures we could scan & email if you are interested. My Grandmoter was Mabel, we lived next door to Helen in Chelsea when I was a kid. My dad still lves in Chelsea, and has a small album of pictures he would be glad to share.

Andre Andrew Gallant Rustico PEI

Hi Everyone,
My Great-grandparents on my mother's side were Andre Gallant and Mary Ann White (Leblanc). Andre was born in Rustico about 1855 and Mary Ann in Rollo Bay about 1856.
My guess is Andre moved in the mid 1870's because Rustico was crowded and land was made available in Lot 43.
After they were married they lived with Mary Ann's parents (Patrick and Harriet White) north of Rollo Bay although their first child (my grandfather) Stephen Wilfred Gallant was born in Rustico in 1883.
I have never been able to be sure who Andre's parents were because there were so many Andre Gallants in Rustico and his birth year of 1855 is determined from the various ages he gives in several censuses.
I started out with five potential sets of parents and have eliminated three of them. The two sets remaining are Simon and Domithilde Gallant who's son Andre was born 11 Feb 1855 or Francois and Agathe Gallant who's son Andre was born 2 Jun 1854.
I would love to find some definitive proof of who Andre's parents were.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Bill Chalk
Victoria, BC

I do have a DNA-verified male 3rd-5th cousin, who is E1b1b1a2* with a last name of Gallant. I have another cousin on paper with a last name of Gallant who does not show up as a DNA cousin who is R1b1b2a1a2f*. Obviously the blood Gallant is of middle eastern descent. I am related through my Acadian grandmother a Pitre who spoke French.

Jeff, you wrote: "As to proof that Pierre L'Arche is a Metis, it sure seems unlikely if he was born in France. It's time to look at source records in my humble opinion. My next step will be to see what records might exist in the Quebec archives mentioned above."

I'm not certain why you would want proof that Pierre Larche was a Metis. If it's proof that Michel Hache was a Metis that you're looking for, just look at his Birth Certificate - says right on there - his father was French and his mother was a Sauvage (Eskimaude). That's proof enough!

I find it amusing that you list the first probability of Michel Hache-Gallant's father as a Michel Gallant, listed as a passanger on a ship's list (the St. Jehan, 1636). There is NO listing of a Michel Gallant on this ship - the name listed is Michel Callant - so easy for many to replace the "C" with a "G". Callant was a laborer from the city of Chinon. This is hardly the strongest possibility!

You also indicate that Michel's birth certificate "includes nothing more". On the contrary - it states that Michel is 8 years old. Since the Baptism is dated April 24th, 1668, it's very likely that Michel was born between Jan. 1st and April 23rd of the year 1660. As well, the certificate tells us that the Baptism took place in Trois Riviere, the names of the godparents and the name of the priest. That's a lot more than "nothing more".

Im looking for information on my grandmother, Mary Gallant Smith Owre..By her death record she was born in 1908 MI and passed july 1 1984 Wi..I dont think her birth year is right..I have found a Mary b 1923 and Margaret b 1921 Gallant living in St Vincents Orphanage on 1930 census in Detroit Mi..They are listed as can-Eng..Mary may have ran away from the home and changed her age(Think her real birth yr maybe 1918)to marry my grandfather, Marvin G Smith b1917, son of Charles K and Gracie Smith..My father Grayl K Smith was born 1938, which would have made Mary 15 if born in 1923..Im think they may of had one or two brothers..One named Isaac and the other Timothy Wayne(This is also my brothers name)..If you have any information please contact me at troublesforme1962@yahoo.com or thobdy62@gmail.com Thank you..

To add further confusion --
Bart has a direct line to Michel as you can see below.
His Y-DNA Haplogroup is R1b1b2a1a2f*. He does not show up even as a distant cousin of mine on 23 and me. Yest another Gallant, David Gallant is my dad's predicted 3rd cousin, and his Y-DNA Haplogroup is E1b1b1a2*
...so someone in this line was adopted...

Capt. Michel Hache Dit Gallant (1662 - 1737) + Anne Cormier (1674 - 1739)
is your 6th great grandfather + is your 6th great grandmother
Pierre Haché-Gallant (1700 - 1760)
Son of Capt. Michel
Louis Haché-Gallant (1727 - 1788)
Son of Pierre
Fabien Hache-Gallant (1760 - 1819)
Son of Louis
Thomas GALLANT (1813 - 1865)
Son of Fabien
Thomas Gallant (1849 -? )
Son of Thomas
Alexandre Gallant (1888 -? )
Son of Thomas
David Archibald Gallant (1917 - 2007)
Son of Alexandre
Bart Gallant
You are the son of David Archibibald
