Was Mariano Gallardo a bigamist?

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 4:37PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Gallardo Najera Chaves Muela
19 July 1772 Maria Josefa Chaves:
I baptized Maria Josepha, daughter of Thomas Chaves and Theresa Reyes, who was born in the River of Baqueteros, her godparents were Joseph Antonio Estrada and Mariana de Caxera, or Casera.
Signed Joseph Ramon Zuniga.

Huejotitan is due west of Hidalgo del Parral, Baqueteros is due west of Huejotitan, three adjoining municipalities in southernmost Chihuahua.

According to their September 14, 1786 marriage record Maria Josefa Chaves was a native of Santa Barbara, who had lived in Valle de Allende 9 months when she married Mariano Gallardo in the chapel of San Gregorio, who was a native of Valle de Allende, both were Spanish. No parents listed.
Mariano remarried on May 9, 1795 but continued having children with Maria Josefa Chaves.

Either there were two Mariano Gallardo’s, or one who was a bigamist. It appears to me that he was a bigamist with two families even though such crimes were severely punished at the time.

“Bautize en esta yglesia de San Jose de Parral a Josef Mariano de la Luz, hijo legitimo de Josef Apolonio Gallardo y de Maria Josefa de Najera, mestizos y vecinos de este expresado jurisdiction.”

15 year-old Mariano Gallardo married 14 year-old Maria Josefa Chaves September 14, 1786 in Valle de Allende, Chihuahua.

Mariano de la Luz Gallardo Najera married Josefa Muela on May 9, 1795 according to Jaime F. Torres’ book “Return to Aztlan.”
