Thats sounds great. I belong to the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865. I got in through my grandmothers' father. I was going to try to get into the DAR but it is linage decent and even though Elisha engraved the first Continential dollar. had to be moved to New jersey to hide from the Britsh, doesn't mean anything to DAR. Thats ok I like the group of DUVCW women that I am with.

Have you contacted Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.? They might be able to help you. I'm not sure about living Gallaudet descendants who are deaf. However, they might have information on deaf individuals who have already died. I am not a Gallaudet family member. However, I did graduate from Gallaudet College (now University). Gallaudet U. is an outstanding university. If you haven't been there to visit, I hope you will some day soon. "Gallaudet Day" is December 10. When I was a teacher at the Illinois School for the Deaf, we celebrated Gallaudet Day each year in my classroom.
Looking for deaf relatives in Gallaudet's family tree..

My name is Gary P. Holte.. I've been researching around for our family tree and have found out that I'm related to Gallaudet's family tree all way back to France "Fanny" Gallaudet who she married to Johnson Kierstead.. Johnson Kierstead is my g-g-g-g-g-grandfather.

Right now, I am looking for deaf relative in Gallaudet's family tree because I DO not know any deaf relative in my family tree as of now.. I am also looking for deaf in Kierstead's line as well.

Another thing, I'd like to share with you, our Kierstead's family goes all way up to Obadiah Holmes (b. 1608-9) and one of his granddaugher Lydia Holmes married to John Bowne..then 6 generation later is Abraham Lincoln (U.S. President). So my thinking is all relatives from France Gallaudet and Johnson Kierstead are related to Abraham Lincoln.

It's very interesting family tree for me.

I'd be very happy to find deaf relative so I won't feel that I am the ONLY one in the family as of now..

Gary P. Holte
Portland, Oregon

My wife is June ALGEO Dolan. Her father and grandfather were named Preston Lefevre Algeo. We know that a John Algeo married Hester Oliver in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in
Philadelphia, PA 23MAY1811, Hester was born 1794 to Thomas Oliver and Sarah Ambrose. Thomas Oliver's father was Reuben Oliver and His mother was Hester Gallaudet. We recently came across this connection thru your listing of Gallaudet Descendants.

Do you have any further references to John Algeo and Hester
Oliver?
If your cousin is already a member of NSDAR, she will be submitting "supplemental" papers. Those take up to two years to be approved most of the time. It may take a lot longer now! In July, DAR raised the fees for both applications and supplementals. So, MANY ladies sent in papers while they could do it "cheaper". If your cousin and the other lady sent their papers in at the same time, the prospective member's papers would go through first. Most of our chapter's papers which were turned in before the July fee increase have already been approved. I hope you and the other person who posted the "DAR" message will let us know when those papers have been approved. I'm not a Gallaudet but I graduated from Gallaudet College in 1973.
Mildred... Peter Wallace Gallaudet, according to all I've seen, was a resident (as much as one could be in war) of Freehold, New Jersey. He is listed as such in the book listing the people of Monmouth Co., NJ during the War. To further show that he is the right one, it is noted in the accounting of the estate of his uncle, Elisha Gallaudet, whose administration was filed 29 Mar 1779, that Peter was given his beaver hat, and bought his coat and westcoat. According to his obit, he was in the Battle of Trenton in 1776. He may technically have been a resident of NYC at that time, as Elisha left NYC for Freehold in 1776, apparently part of the evacuation of NYC with the British taking over. Elisha was the engraver of the first United States coin, the "Continental Dollar," plus a couple of pieces of New York Colony currency paper money, and part of one of the first issues of Continental Currency in 1776. One genealogical source calls Peter "Col. Peter Gallaudet," but no official document that I'm aware of shows that he was anything but a private in Lee's Legion, though he went on to become a personal assistant to George Washington. Later, he was involved in Gov't and was very highly regarded. Hope this is of help to your friend, or anyone else that comes along with interest in these people.

We have since sent her papers to National but I would, and I am sure she would, like to know if you have proof of residence. This Peter Gallaudet is her 2nd or 3rd gr-grandfather. Her papers may be returned for insufficient evidence so any help she can get would be appreciated.
Mildred

Place named Gallaudet

I'm not a Gallaudet but I graduated from Gallaudet College in 1973. I teach at the Illinois School for the Deaf. I got married on "Gallaudet Day" in 1983 so we always celebrate Gallaudet Day in my classroom. Looked for "deaf" as a topic, nothing, so tried Gallaudet. I'm surprised there aren't more of you on this message board. SOMEWHERE I have a copy of an article about a little place named Gallaudet. I think it was in Indiana on a railroad line. Thought some of you might like to have a copy. email me at rchrdcck@aol.com, and we can arrange for me to send you a copy when I unearth it. (The genealogical room is like an archaelogical (can't spell it) dig so don't plan on getting it any time soon. If you have never visited Gallaudet U., be sure to go! It is a special place.

I.S.D. closes for spring break April 13. Get back to me around the 13th. I plan to work in the genealogical room (aka archaelogical dig) over break. Will hunt for the Gallaudet article then. Nice to hear from you. I told the gal in charge of the I.S.D. museum about the Gallaudet message board. Will tell her I heard from you. Later.

For those of you who missed it, Gallaudet was featured on Home and Garden Network Jan. 21. I think it was on Restore America...will have to watch the tape to see. It was beautiful. You might check the hgtv website for rebroadcasts of it. Our computer was "ill" in December, so belated "Happy Gallaudet Day" on December 10. We celebrated at the Illinois School for the Deaf.

Hi, Dianne... I'm a Gallaudet descendant as well. Saw your posting. I come through Pierre Elisee, then his son Elisha, and then Elisha's daughter who married Samuel Pease in New Jersey. If I can add to your base in any way, let me know! Best, Scott

Kathleen -- how nice to see your message! I AM a descendent of the Gallaudet's. Thomas was one of my great(many time!) uncles. Our family has always been proud of his accomplishments. I had the opportunity to visit Gallaudet University a year ago January but unfortunately, everything was closed on the Sunday I was actually there. I thought that I would be able to, at least, get into the book store, but it too was closed. I had planned on returning but it snowed every day thereafter that I was in town. I was very disappointed as I was visiting from Reno, Nevada. I plan a trip there this August and hopefully, I can find something open!

I would enjoy hearing about the town Gallaudet when you get around to it! I use to live in the San Francisco Bay Area and there is a town there called Fremont. In Fremont there is a school for the deaf and it is located on Gallaudet Way. As a native New Yorker where my branch of the family lived, I was interested to see that our family name, at least, reached California!!!

I would enjoy hearing from you.

This e-mailing is great! I have located a number of relatives that I didn't know I had!!!

Thanks! --- Ginny

Hi Diane Scott! Lynne gave me the name of
this message board. I am a descendent of
Pierre Elisee too! Actually, Pierre Elisee,
Elisha, Joseph, Peter Elisha, Joseph (Mary Ann's
Brother!), Peter Elisha, Floyd, Annie, to my
dad, Robert, and then me! I would be happy
to share any information I have with either of
you! As Lynne would say, another "cous!" I was
born in New Rochelle, now live in Reno, Nevada,
and have visited most of the towns that our
family comes from in France. I would enjoy
hearing from both of you! Ginny
