Hi there,

Funny you should mention the spelling because my Bridget is Donohue in some records and Donoghue in others.

However, to my knowledge they lived in Ireland for their whole lives.

The other names you listed are not familiar to me either.

Thanks for replying.
Cheers
Cynthia

A Bridget Donohugue (with a 'g') lived and worked in Virginia City, Nevada with her sister Kate in the Chollar Mine Office from 1870's to late 1880's possibly. They took care of Mark Requa, son of Isaac and Sarah Requa. It is noted in a book written by Mark, that Kate was the cook, and "Irish and loyal to the family through and through." It is never mentioned what Bridget did specifically for the Requa household.

Its actually not that uncommon. Catherine Culbert and Henry Gallery were also married in the registry office. Apparently at that time changing of religions was quite common. The churches would offer food as incentives so those on harder times would change religion.

Here are the details of the marriage between William John Culbert and Ellen Jane Lynass:

They were married on 1st February 1886 in the Registrar's Office. Lurgan, Parish of Shankill, is given as the address for each of them and in the age column, against each of their names, is the word full. His occupation is given as stonecutter, hers as folder. His father's name is William John Culbert and his occupation is stonecutter. Her father's name is William Lynass and he was a coachman.

The witnesses were Henry Gallery and Margaret Williamson. All four of them made their mark rather than sign ( Ellen was able to sign 'Ellinjane' by the time of the 1912 Covenant but William was still making a mark).

That's everything that's on the certificate but the thing that puzzles me is the Registrar's Office marriage. It's common now but I would have assumed it would have been very unusual in the 19th century.

William John and Ellen Jane are my great-grandparents but I am still trying to establish who his parents were.

Hi Again Dave,
It looks quite likely that your William Culbert is the son of my William Culbert. It would appear that the first four children of Wm Snr were brought up as Catholics, at least Wm Jnr was brought up as a Methodist and then a further four children were brought up as CofI.

Graeme

Yes, father's name is William John Culbert. His occupation is given as stonecutter, same as his son (though by 1901 his son's occupation is labourer).

Gallery/Galloway

Hi,

I seeking information on the Gallery/Galloway surname in Caroline County, VA. I noticed that prior to 1920 the familiy I am researching spelled their name Galley. Sometimes it was spelled Gallery, Gallary, Gallory.

After 1920 the name was spelled Galloway.

Does anyone know the reason for the change?

The names I am researching in Caroline County VA are

Charles and Susan Gallery. They had a son named Edward Gallery.

Prior to 1920, they are listed in the census and on birth records as as Gallery, Gallary, Gallory etc.

In the 1920 census, Susan is a wd and is listed as Galloway.

After that time the name for the family members is always listed as Galloway.

Susan and Charles had two children: Edward Gallery and Pagie Tine Gallery.

Edward married Martha Ferguson in 1890 in Caroline COunty, VA. They had four children:
- Howard Gallery married Lizzie Morton. They may have moved to King George, VA.
- Mattie married Emmitt Woolfolk. They lived in Washington, DC
- Estelle married Sidney Scott. They remained in Caroline County, VA
- Anne married Howard Coleman. They lived in Washington, DC

Pagie married Charles Hevelow in Caroline County, VA in 1904. They lived in Fredericksburg, VA.

I would like to compare notes with anyone researching the Gallery/Galloway surname.

Thanks
M.Simmons

Yes, I hope that you don't mind. I do not know IL at all, and I'm trying to get more info. on my Uncle Sidney Braaten, who I only recently found out was related to me. My own mom died in 1969, and I found out that she had a brother that lived in Fisher, IL. I do know that he died in Jan. 1986, but I'm hoping to find more info. out about his family. If he was married, I'm not sure if he was. I'd also like to find out if they had kids, names, etc... Thanks for your help with the IL question, I appreciate it!

His wife was named Mary Beattie.

I do however have some correspondence from another Michael Gallery to Francis Gallery (my Michael's father) dated 1869. He states that his father was Dennis Gallery and the family lived in Kilmenly, Ennis Bridge. His father had a brother also called Michael and lived in a place called Dononyure in New Wheye.

Not sure this helps.
Maggie

Hi graeme I am just reading your message and my answer is that I have the GALLERY surname on my family tree in Ireland and my connection sounds as if my line of enquiry would be in the same generation of Martin.

I do not know where by ggrandmother actually came from in Ireland but what I do have is: -

Martin BURKE who came to New Zealand followed by Mary and brother Patrick who all came from Clare. Their birthdays were all 1880's.

Their parents were listed as Patrick Burke Farmer from Clare and Annie Sabine or Sabina GALLERY.

I have not so far found any other siblings either BURKE or GALLERY and if you follow naming patterns Martin was named after somebody in the family.

Elaine
Hastings
Wine and Fruit Country of NZ
mattsen@paradise.net.nz
