How exciting... Your Grandfather, Michael is my 1st cousin 3x removed (according to ancestry) My tree is listed as Duncan under my user name - my mother was born Alison Duncan. This is my mothers family, but we knew little about them as she was adopted at the age of two. I began to be interested in the Galletta portion as the name (in various spellings) appeared in the tree so I began looking back. So far my research has been based on Ancestry and Scotlands people so it is great to hear from someone who knows better. I am going to read and look at what you've said and then hopefully we can be in touch again<br>I see you have put a second post on too... thank you so much for being in touch Fiona

Hi<br><br>I just posted a message about my mother's family, the Gallettas. My mother was Ina Galletta. One of her sister's Mary, married Percy Worth. Their children are Stuart, Daniel, Ann, Maureen and John. I know Maureen died many years ago. Haven't seen the others since I was a teenager. Freddie Galletta was my grandfather's brother, who had a barber's shop in Leith. I assume this is the same Worth family tree you are trying to trace. Only know that Michael Galletta's father came from Northern Italy.

Hi<br><br>my mother, Ina Galletta, was born in Leith in 1911. Her father was Michael Galletta and his wife was Mary. Her maiden name was McManus and her family came from Dundee. My mother's siblings were Michael, Daniel, Mary, Margaret, Hilda, Thomasina (Molly) and Nana. They lived in Livingston Place in Leith. Michael and his brother Freddie, had a barber's shop. I only remember meeting my grandfather a couple of times. I just called an older cousin about him, she told me that when she asked him where he came from, the answer was always the same "somewhere in Northern Italy". She never knew anything about his family. I remember that some of my aunts looked Italian with their short dark curly hair. Michael Galletta and my mother were redheads. Would love to hear from you.

Hi I just saw these posts and wondered if you have got anymore information about John Edmund Galletta. I have been trying to trace my family tree on and off for for over a year but cant get any information on John Edmund Galletta in regards to where he was born or when he came to Scotland. I found on one certificate that his father was called Edmund but his mother was listed as unknown. He was my great great great grandfather. He had a son Federick who married Ann Skelly and had a daughter Elizabeth or Eliza who was my great grandmother.Ann Skelly died quite young and some of the children ended up in an orphanage. Eliza had a daughter Annie who was my grandmother. My mother remembers meeting Eliza and also visiting relatives in Leith when she was small.Any help or information would be greatly appreciated thanks

Yes this is exciting, I haven't really looked at this for a few years and will really need to dig out my files. I have updated my family tree today and it is a tad clearer. There are lot's of Galletta's decending from John Edmund and Catherine Kirkwood. As there is also a tradition of using family names it can get a bit confusing. There were family members in Angus, Fife, Edinburgh and Glasgow. I remember meeting some when I was little but not since. I am from Edinburgh originally. John Edmund arrived in UK circa 1848 from Italy (possibly via France) his father was named Edmund and I am trying to find Italian records for them both. He married Catherine in 1849 and had up to 8 children. My family descends from Catherine's brother Frederick. Some records show the surname as Gallettia which can be confusing. I will work on updating my family tree and you can track my progress if you wish, it is named Worth family tree. Let's keep in contact and see where we get to. Brenda

How exciting - I would love to hear more about your part of the family - I have put a few details about the line I am from below, The Galletta family looks very interesting I wonder what made them come to Scotland?<br><br>I know very little about the family as these are my mothers natural family, as she was adopted at the age of one, we found the natural family a few years ago and recently I began tracing back who was who - John Edmund Galletta is also my 3rd great grandfather, his daughter was Catherine Janet Richie Galletta who married Charles Fenwick Rollo their daughter Elizabeth Fenwick Rollo married George Andrew Duncan, their daughter Catherine Galletta Duncan was my natural grandmother who had twins Alison and Greg. Alison my mother was adopted and Greg stayed with his family<br>(Mum was renamed Wendy and grew up in Newtyle near Dundee). BBecause they were not my direct family I have very little ddetail having done most of my research via Scotlands People and I have a tree on Ancestry.

John Edmund Galletta is my great great great grandfather, he arrived in the uk circa 1851...I have some information about him and his descendents but I have not looked at it for a few years so will need to find it as I have moved house a couple of times, will do this when I get some time. Hairdressing was definitely a family profession, indeed my father has his grandfathers strop from when his grandfather used to work as a hairdresser. My dad's grandfather was Michael Galletta and John Edmund was his grandson. Would love to share records sometime as I am really interested in finding out where John Edmund came from, I visit Italy a lot and would love to see where he was from sometime. I am going to revisit my notes and try and discover where John Edmund originated from.

Hi in researching I found a number of Gallettas living in Scotland listed as hairdressers (although the spelling appears to vary greatly)starting with John Edmund Galletta who appears to have been Italian by birth born around 1821 he married Catherine Kirkwood, a Fredrich and Edmund his sons followed him into the profession does anyone know more about John (maybe Giovanni??)<br>Thanks

Dr. Anthony S. Galletta, 77, born,in Bessemer, Lawrence County, son of ,John and Grace Galletta.

<br> <br>Anthony S. Galletta<br>Canonsburg<br><br>Dr. Anthony S. Galletta, 77, of Canonsburg, <br>passed on to his eternal reward Sunday, July 10, 2011. He had a medical practice in Canonsburg for 47 years and had served at Canonsburg Hospital, for a time as president of the Medical Board. Dr. Galletta was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Bessemer, Lawrence County, a son of the late John and Grace Galletta. He attended the University of Pittsburgh (B.S.). In 1954, he joined the Navy for two years, serving as hospital corpsman. He attended the University of Santo Tomas with his brother, Joseph, and received his medical degree in 1960. Dr. Galletta served residencies at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and Santa Barbara Hospital in California. In 1967, Dr. and Mrs. Galletta volunteered with the Catholic Medical Missions. He was the doctor in charge of a hospital in Guatemala, serving a large province. Returning to the United States in 1968 with Mrs. Galletta and daughter, Christina, he opened his family practice in Canonsburg. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Galletta made significant contributions by his benevolent service to the needy both on an international and local level. As a third-year medical student at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, he supported the work of a Belgian nun at a Catholic medical mission clinic in the outlying mountain provinces. Using his meager skills, the student had a life-changing moment. He saw that the nun needed medicine, equipment and helpers. His classmates returned with him to the clinic catching his enthusiasm to help with collaboration of the medical staff. The director of the medical school was caught up in the joy of the project. Activity at the mission became extensive. The University of Santo Tomas made the medical mission part of the fourth-year medical curriculum. In 1963, Medical Missions of the Philippines Inc. was born. 20 years later, in 1983, Dr. Galletta was honored as their founder, at that time more than 300,000 people had received surgical, dental or medical services. For many years, Dr. Galletta volunteered as medical director of the Brothers' Brother Foundation of Pittsburgh. Together with the founder of Brothers' Brother, Dr. Robert Hingson, he inoculated thousands in Nicaragua. In time, Dr. Galletta encouraged businessmen and doctors from Washington County to visit. They became a sister city to Rivas, Nicaragua. Later, an ambulance loaded with medical supplies furnished by the people of Washington County was driven to New Orleans to be delivered to the people of Rivas under Dr. Galletta's direction. After the overthrow of the Romanian Dictatorship, Dr. Galletta joined Luke Hingson (president of Brothers' Brother) in visiting Romania to locate secure channels for medical, educational and agricultural supplies to the Romanian people. His passions were family, Italian opera and the Italian-American Heritage Society. Dr. Galletta will long be remembered for his sponsorship of the "Cari Amici" (Dear Friends) picnics celebrating Italian food, music and fellowship. <br>He married Letita Pontello, Oct. 9, 1965, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Christina (Jay) Miranda, of Butler; four grandchildren, Anthony, Angela, Alexander and Alexandra Miranda; a brother, Nunzio (Ann) Galletta, of Bethel Park; two sisters, Carmela (Phil) Rosile, of Bethel Park, and Rose Marie (Jessie), of Milford, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are sister, Antonette Pugliese; and two brothers, Frank and Joseph Galletta. Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in SALANDRA FUNERAL SERVICE INC., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, 304 W. Pike St., Canonsburg, 412-600-0170, where a blessing service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Full military rites will be accorded by the VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion Post 902 of Houston Honor Guard. The Christian Mothers and Guild of St. Patrick will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. <br>( Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh Tribune)<br><br> St. Patrick Church,"<br>

My grandfather was Giovanni Galletta, came to USA in early 1900's, married Annunizata Scarlotta (sp???). I know for sure that my grandmother was born in Reggio Calabria and I believe my grandfather was either born there or somewhere in Sicily. Both have been deceased for quite a long time. My grandfather, Giovanni, came to America before my grandmother did, he was a dock worker and had very close ties to the community in NYC, which was called Little Italy. They had 9 children including my mom. The oldest was my uncle Dominico who was born in Itlay and came to America with my grandmother when he was 2 years old. The rest of my mom's siblings were born in NYC. My grandfather passed away around 1953-1954 and my grandmother passed away in 1973. I would love to find out more about our family and to find out if I have any other relatives.
