My great grandmother was Angela Rosasco; I need to look up her dates. She married my great grandfather Vittorio Basso and they lived in Clevland, Ohio had two sons then returned to Gattorna where Angela had my grandfather, Vittorio Basso. They lived there until WWii loomed and moved back to the US where they settled in Detroit.

My great grandparents maintained a home in Gattorna until the 1950s. My grandfather, who became a prominent architect in Detroit, built a church in Gattorna. My great uncle, Louis Basso, did some research at the church in Gattorna and found links of our Basso family In Gattorna until at least the 13th century (he couldn't read the Latin prior to that and had to stop his research.)

Please let me know if you would like to share family information. That would be great!

Re: GALLI of Italy & London, England

Dennis Galley ... I too am looking for a missing Galli branch ... that ended up in the U.K. they settled somewhere near Liverpool. Don't think were a match though. My ancestral Galli's are from central Italy. From what you wrote, clearly your ancestral Galli's could be from the Veneto. Venice ... is famous for glass blowing on the island of Murano. In addition, many Galli's are in Venice, Vicenza, Padova, all of Italy and Milan (ancestral seat of the Italian Galli family) ... origins of the surname ... we take our name from the town of "Galli" 20 KM south of Milan or so they/we think. Historically, Italian & French Galli's (take their name from the Roman "Gallus" .. "la Gallia"(m. ancient Gaul)... line is documented back to the 7th century Grenoble, France ... they were into textiles. One of your Galli's carried an Austrian passport ... in 1836. Venice was part of the Tyrol region of the Austrian (Hapsburg) Empire at that time. Hope this helps.

GALLI of Italy & London, England

I am trying to connect a number of GALLI inhabitants of London in the mid-1800's. Most of them were Looking-Glass Makers, Manufacturers, or Frame Makers, and they include:

Thomas George GALLI, frame maker, b. abt. 1801 @ Italy, son of George(Giorgio?) GALLI - found on 1841 Census for St. Pancras, Middlesex.
Charles GALLI, Looking-Glass Frame Maker, b. abt 1801 @ Italy, son of Peter GALLI.
Andrew GALLY, Looking-Glass Maker, b. abt. 1806 @ Italy - found on 1841 Census for St. George, Tower Hamlets
Pontilione GALLY, Looking-Glass Maker, b. abt 1800 @ Italy -found on 1851 Census for Tower Hamlets
George GALLY, Master Looking-Glass Maker, b. abt. 1816 @ Italy - found on 1861 Census for St. Georges, Tower Hamlets
Charles GALLEY, Looking-Glass Maker, b. abt. 1789 @ Italy - found on 1851 Census for St. George, Tower Hamlets

I believe that Thomas George GALLI and Andrew GALLY were brothers, but I can't prove it. I have found a "Certificate of Arrival" for Giorgio GALLEY of Italy, dated August 22, 1836. He had an Austrian passport. I have also found a death record for a Georgio Vicenza GALLI, dated Apr-Jun 1847 @ St. Pancras.

Any assistance or advice in how to link these people, or trace them back to a specific location in Italy, would be most appreciated.
I have documented and found ... an Albert Galli b. 1895, son of Nicola Cesidio Galli b. 18 Nov. 1856 Roccamorice and Maria Anna Liberi b. 1858 Roccamorice, Chieti, Abruzzo (N.B. Roccamorice is now part of the province of Pescara since 1927). The entire family settled and raised families in Portland, Maine. Have a photo of the family ... taken in 1929, courtesy of Joan Galli (Portland, Maine)... daughter of Arthur Galli, son of Antonio Galli, son of Nicola Cesidio Galli. As for Peter Galli b. 1920 ... family settled in both Pa., and New Jersey.

My great great grandfather was the Angelo Rosasco you referenced. He was born in Gatorna, Liguria, Italy 22 March 1837, died in Indianapolis 16 June 1908. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetary. He was married to Maria Gatorna (date of marriage unknown), who was born in Gatorna 14 April 1844 and died in Indianapolis on 28 April 1912. She is buried in Crown Hill Cemetary there as well.

They had four sons: John and Louis, both born in Gatorna, Nicholas (my great grandfather), and Angelo (also known as Thomas. I believe Angelo came to the US in 1870 or 1871. I have plenty of information if you would like. Please reply.

What format is it in?

If from Eggiwil, then we are probably related... We have DNA validation to 1680 or so. JGalle

My Grandfather told me that the Gallis had come to Switzerland from Abruzzi 500 years ago - this was in the 1960's. Hope this information helps and please contact me if you have any more questions. I don't know much about genealogy research but will tell you all I do know.
Hi there

Sadly I cant help you in your research as my Galli/Galley roots appear to come from Scotland and Ireland.

I have found that the spelling of the name has changed over the years from Galley to Galli. This has come about because many members of the family pre 1900 has problems spelling words correctly.

If I can be of any help in the future please contact me.

Good luck and take care

N Horton
I would be interested in what you find out regarding Como as I research GALLEY/GALLE/GALLI family as well. As the family migrated (1490 to present), the name has changed from GALLI in Switzerland to GALLE in Germany to all three in the USA. We have traced our family back through Palatinate areas of Germany to 1500s-1490 in Eggiwill Switzerland where the name was GALLI. Como's proximity to the Swiss border is interesting, and wondering if there is an Italian connection...as GALLI is found in Italy as well. We have never established any Italian connection, but have DNA validated back to 1680 Germany.
John Galle

I have been told by another relative that they were from the Como area in northern Italy. He is listed with a Zalina Galli as wife. They came to New York but my grandfather, Joseph lived in West Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey his whole life.

Hi Clouds

You stated your Edward Galli arrived via Ellis Island in 1882 on the St. Germain ... Where was he born? Do You know of the name of the town or region of Italy from where he originated? This is imperative to know. I have documented 2 Edward(Eduardo) Galli's, one pertains to my tree, Edward (Eduardo) Galli b. 1895-96. Found another Edward Galli b. 1860 (not sure if this one is connected to my tree because document does not state town or region of birth) It states he was destined for N.Y., N.Y.(profession: fireman). Document states he's 34 years old and was travelling with a Alfred Galli (male child) aged 12 years. Ship: Werra, Year: 1894

I have been trying to get as much information on my mother's family as I can. I don't know of any who are alive or even cousins who may still be around. My mother was Mildred Galli. Her father was Joseph Edward Galli. They lived in West Hoboken at the time of my mother's birth in 1925. My great-grandfather was Edward Galli who immigrated in 1882 from Italy. He sailed on the St. Germain to Ellis Island with his wife Zalina. My mother had several brothers and sisters but I do not know if any are still alive. A brother Joseph, Alfred, Robert, sisters: Margaret, Henrietta, Katherine. If anyone has information on this line I would be grateful to have it.

Hi Kenseeu

My line descends from Simon(e) Galli b. abt 1717?, ? Arezzo, Tuscany. This has become a point of contention with other Galli Family branches/members. Some believe our line came from Terni, Umbria. No documentation confirming this as of yet. My branch has always stated for 10 generations that he(Simone) was from a small village near the city of Viareggio in northern Tuscany ... so far no documentation confirming this either. Still searching. Thanks for the comment. I'll be on the lookout for your remaining brothers ... if I spot them I'll give you a heads up.

Cheers! G.G.

I have gotten some folks together with other relatives they did not know about, even though they are not linked to me...but share the name. Who knows, back in the 1500s, the Swiss were relegating the Swiss Menonites to work as galley slaves and who may have ended up in British Isles as a result...Never know when the magic link comes by...

Hi John

My word you really have a fine collection of research,

I myself have only been researching for a few months and most of this time has been spent on the male Horton side of the family.
As far as I know the Leeds Galli`s were not Mennonites but more than likely were Roman Catholics.

You have mentioned a variety of Galli spellings, I found that in some instancies where census forms were hand written as against todays typed version. The name Galley was written and could be interpreted to be Gulley due to the elaborate writing. There could also be instancies where literacy was a problem and form filling was done by a third party.
I dont know whether you have access to the UK Census forms but if you do not I will attempt to send you some of the Galli copies. It may take a few days as I will be busy elsewhere shortly

I myself live just outside the City of York in Yorkshire, your New York took its name from the city.

Take care

Neil

Neil:

I am in Chesapeake Virginia USA now, and from Minnesota originally. Have been doing genealogy actively since 1999. I am always looking for GALLI/GALLE/GALLEYs with a Swiss connection. Most of the early ones were Mennonites as well. Were the Leeds GALLIs Mennonites?

Are you in the UK? I have not looked for the GALLI spelling in UK, but have found GALLE and GALLEY there and have several short lines from there. I have met several folks researching the name and always like hearing from a new one. I will check my databases and see if anything pops up. I know there was a sea captain named GALLE from Liverpool[1 - Gerrit Evert Galle b.Amersfoort, Holland in 1838?-d.? When/where? [Dutchman] - md Mary Ellen Phillips (b.? In Liverpool UK - d? Liverpool?) - when where (Liverpool). Had at least one child. Gerrit known as master mariner [Captain?] for the sailing ship AYDON FOREST. He gained his sea captain's certificate in Liverpool in 1877. Latest information is George Edward was in fact "Gerrit Evert Galle" .]

John Galle

Hi John

I must apologise for not giving the geographical details, the Leeds is in the England.

As for James Jr, he had no children.

And as for James Snr and Peter I am still trying to ascertain details.

I dont know whether it is of interest to you but I understand that there are quite a few Galli`s buried in the Beckett Street Cemetary in Leeds England plus a large obelisk with the Galli name on it there too. If you use Google you will find that they have a "friends society" who will look up various graves for you.

I realise these details are very small in the scheme of things but at present they are all I have.

May I ask your whereabouts ?

Take care

Neil Horton

Hi John

As I mentioned in my first email there are no living Galli`s on the male side. And as I was very young when some of them died I have to rely on my aunt who is 96 to try and remember details

My mother was Mary Galli 1911- 2004 and she had a brother James Galli 1919-1994 plus an sister Elizabeth 1914- present, all from the Leeds area.

Their father was called James Galli 1880-1959 who married a Clara Stokes.

My grandad Galli`s father was called Peter Lewis Galli 1853-? and was a tailor by trade.

My grandad had a number of brothers, one of which Joseph I understand went to live in the U S.

I have found that the name Galli on the old census forms was sometimes written Galley or even Gulley which is confusing.

Is this of any help ?

Neil

N Horton:

Anything you may have indicating links to Switzerland would be helpful, or direct male line GALLI for DNA testing. We have not done any maternal line testing as it is more expensive.

If you want to pass on some ancestry line data I would be glad to compare notes as I have several lines not linked to my line. If so, I can talk to you off line, via email.

As I mentioned in the previous posts, the name GALLI exists in geographic pockets in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. We have DNA validation on the German side to 1600s, but not into Switzerland or Italy. We know our particular line migrated from Eggiwill Switzerland (1490) to Palatinate area of Mannheim Germany (1600s) and then to USA (1800s) (PA, MN, KS, IA). The spelling changed from GALLI to GALLE in Germany and then GALLEY/GALLE in USA.

John Galle
