Classification: Query
Surnames: Gallion, Galyean, Galyon
We are excited to announce that we have initiated a new yDNA Project for the surnames Gallion, Galyean, Galyon, and any other variations that may exist. We started this project after discovering a perfect 37 marker match between two men, one a direct descendant of Shadrick Galyean, b 1801 of Surry, NC and the other a direct descendant of Daniel Galyean, b. 1802 in NC and d. in Knox Co., TN. What this 37 marker match means is that they have a 97.6% probability of sharing a common ancestor within 8 generations, which supports the theory that Daniel is most likely the son of Young Galyean and Shadrick the son of Samuel, both Young and Samuel being sons of Jacob Gallion of Surry Co., NC.
While analyzing the yDNA, which is a small piece of DNA that changes only minimally over the generations and is passed intact father to son, cannot tell us the precise relationship between ancestors, it can strongly support or definitely disprove the paper trails we have gathered. In some instances, where mutations are exclusive to certain branches of the family, it can actually pinpoint the common ancestors. We hope that by getting other men who have variations of the surname involved in our project we can help to further refine the Gallion etc. families in the United States.
Another interesting discovery in these yDNA results is that the Haplogroup, which is the classification for deep ancestry, looking at very early migrations, is R1b1c7 which is primarily found in Northern Ireland. We are hoping that as more people with different variations of the name get involved in the project, a clearer picture of the European origins of our Gallion/Galyean/Galyon families will emerge as well, so participation is encouraged for all with similar names, not just those who know their origins.
The link to our new Project Homepage is: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/g/gallion/index.html This page will have links at the top of it to view the actual yDNA results as well as the Patriarch's page where the pedigrees for participating family branches are listed. There is also a link for requesting a kit, should you be interested in joining the project.
Our email addresses are listed on the project homepage, and we'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
