Lots of info here that I didn't have. Could never find my grandma Florence on the 1910 or 1920 Census records. My father is Jack S. On the 1930 census. Real name is John Samuel. The name is Elam. John D. Gallivan married Edith Caroiline Elam in South Africa although I don't know the year. Edith's parents were Benjamin Elam and Emma Pascall. These 2 went to New Zealand first from England and had their children there and later moved to South Africa. I have the birth certificates of these children. The Florence Ashby was the cousin to John's wife from the Pascall side. John's son was also named John Daniel Gallivan. It was said that he died young. The only information I could find on him was his registry on the WWI draft. He was living in Kewanee, IL with his wife and worked at the Parkside Hotel. Other than that I can find nothing. From the city directories in 1914 and 1915 does this mean my grandma Florence was living with Mortimer? Also the Ohio part is wrong on Clarence's record in 1930. I remember seeing that. He was born in Spencer Co. IN, his mother was born in New York and father born in Spencer Co, IN. Clarence moved to Indy where he met my grandmother. I never met Clarence for he died before I was born. John's daughter Edith's full name is Edith Katherine Emma Gallivan. I remember her. She is buried in Terre Haute with her husband and with their son James I believe. The one that served in the wars. I have pictures of their graves. Edith's daughter, Mary Lou is the one who wrote the oral account on her grandfather John Daniel Gallivan. You will have to excuse me because I'm relating all this info by memory. Okay I have a lot of work here to do. I was just having a hard time finding my grandmother in certain years. Interesting also about the wedding my grandma was in and Patrick as well. Thanks so much!!!!!

Turns out I had more information on this family than I knew. I had researched Mortimer and John`s brother Patrick at one time in relation to a Breen family I was looking at. Patrick married Mary Keating in 1876 in Indianapolis and they had seven children, all of whom reached adulthood. I didn`t realize that it was your Patrick. I have a lot of information on them. John`s daughter Florence was maid of honor at the wedding of Patrick`s daughter Gertrude Gallivan to Patrick Breen in 1917. Her sister Edith, married to James McKenna, was also present at the wedding. I don`t see their brother John anywhere in Indianapolis, but there were a couple of other Johns here.

Washington Births, 1891-1907
about Flo Gallivan
Name: Flo Gallivan
Date of Birth: 22 Jan 1897
Gender: Female
County: Spokane
Father's name: John
Mother's name: Edith Elans

(record says born 1897, but looking at image I am sure it was 1898, person who filled out form forgot to change year.)
Washington Births, 1891-1907
3716 Gallivan Flo b Jan 22 1898 Spokane f white alive legitimate mother Edith Elans age 28 white 3rd child b New Zealand father John age 47 white b America H S Martin Feb 10 1898

Record says mother`s maiden name was Eland, but both Florence and Edith`s marriage records say Elam.

1900 Census
Douglas Precinct Spokane county Washington Spokane wd 4
12 Jun 1900 27 of 55
College Ave hse 2008 dwg 260 fam 288
Gallivan John head w m Jun 1842 52 m 5 b Ire f b Ire m b Ire imm 1850 50 na mining operator 0 mos unem can read write spk Eng owns home mort
Edith wife w f Sep 1868 31 m 5 3 ch 3 liv b Australia f b Eng m b Eng imm 1897 3 can read write spk eng
John D son w m Jan 1895 5 s b South Africa f b Ire m b Australia imm 1899 1
Edith K daughter w f Nov 1897 2 s b South Africa f b Ire m b Australia imm 1899 1
Florence daughter w f Jan 1899 1 s b Wa f b Ire m b Australia
Ashby Florence cousin w f Jun 1874 25 s b Il f b Eng m b Eng can read write spk Eng

1914 Indianapolis City Directory
Gallivan Florence, bkkpr 335 W Wash, b 857 Sanders
Gallivan Mortimer D, h 857 Sanders.
Gallivan Mary (wid Patrick),b 405 Prospect.
Lucid Patrick, lab, h 405 Prospect

1915 Indianapolis City Directory
Gallivan Mortimer D, h 857 Sanders
Gallivan Florence M, bkkpr 335 W Wash, b 857 Sanders.
Gallivan Mary (wid Patrick), h 3953 Graceland av
Gallivan Francis M, bacteriologist, b 3953 Graceland av
Gallivan Gertrude A, Insp, b 3953 Graceland av

Indianapolis Star
21 Nov 1915 p 41
Rho Thetas Hold Meeting,
A meeting of the Rho Theta Sorority was held at the residence of Miss Marie Mahoney Monday evening.
Thank you for this information. I had looked at some of Mortimer's records but not all. You have given me a wealth of information. I just was never really 100% sure that I had the correct Mortimer. John's full name was John Daniel Gallivan. He was very interested in finding that pot of gold. I know that he was in Tombstone in 1874 because he had his Civil War discharge papers made for him there. The account said 1877 but he left sooner to go out west but dates can be off sometimes so that is no big deal. My account said he was at the comstoke lode but that is impossible however I believe he went there but years later but I cannot prove that. He also went to South Africa to the diamond mines. I have documents of his passport application and passport. That is where he met his wife who was 20 years younger than him. Two of his children were born there. He and his wife and two children left and went to Spokane WA where my grandmother was born in 1898. According to the account he went to the Yukon. In 1901 his wife died. She was pregnant and both did not survive. I have records of this. That is where Mortimer and Ellen come into the account. Apparently John brought the 3 kids to live with them in Indianapolis. I don't know why he abandoned his children but he did and there was no word from him for a while. The account also says that he showed up one day and the kids went to live with other relatives but I have yet to find them on any census records so I don't know. They wouldn't have shown up on Mortimer's though. My grandmother in 1960 had a military marker put on his grave and it states where he served in the Civil War. Anyways thought you might enjoy knowing a little about John. I am so thrilled at finally being able to connect some dots and know for certain now who my gg grandparents were.

Thank you for posting this. It was very useful for me. I am the great granddaughter of John Gallivan brother to Mortimer. I have long suspected that his parents were Daniel and Catherine through Mortmer's records but wasn't quite sure. I have an oral account of John's life but we all know how oral accounts are...grains of truth and so forth. The oral account mentioned Mortimer and Ellen. When John's wife died in 1901 his children went to live with Mortimer and Ellen in Indianapolis. However I could never link this Mortimer to my John. I have a lot of documented records of John, Civil War, ect and he was into mining as the account you posted says. I know that the account of Mortimer is not documented proof but at least now I can search better. Also John is buried at Holy Cross too. Thanks again for the post.

Michael,

Many apologies for butting in on this conversation. However, I don't have a paid account so cannot message you outside of these boards.

I'm interested in your research into Dwyers of Kerry as mine are from Castleisland. Would you be willing to discuss things? I'm not sure if you're able to message me back, but that would be lovely if you are able to.

Cheers,

Allie

Oh yes! Lets definitly compare data! We fall from the same tree :) My aunt has been working on this branch of my tree quite hard. It facinates both of us and with the Sedalia area being just an hr from both of us, we've met up a couple of times and visited the area, digging around in the family tree. Our most recent trip (last week) turned up a photograph taken around 1898-1900 with 30+ family members of the Michael & Hanora Sullivan family. Only about 5 are positively identified. I will send you a copy to your email address and maybe you can ID some more. We got it from the grandson of Kate Sullivan O'brien, Ryland Logan. My direct line is Michael Sullivan/Margaret Sullivan/Michael Gallivan/Helen Patricia Gallivan/Stephen Ridenour/Me - Tena Ridenour.

Looking forward to comparing data!
Tena

22 Apr 2011

Michael Sullivan was my great grandfather. I have my great grandmother as Hanora Ready. There is a family tradition that Hanora used to say that she was Hanora O'Connell Ready.
I believe that Bridget(t) was married after she arrived in the states to William Murphy. I'm not sure if her sisters Catherine Galvin/Gallivan White and Julia were older or younger but I believe her parents were Mary (Kelly) Galvin and Daniel Galvin from Bracaraugh....Thank you, any further help is greatly appreciated. I'm heading over to Ireland/Caherdaniel next month with my 80 year old father....

Michael,

I found the 1885 marriage of Bridget to Jerry Sullivan, which gives her parents as William and Margaret ( ) Galvin. Thus far, no connection with the Gallivan/Galvins I know in Caherdaniel. Were Bridget;s siblings olderor younger?

Thank you very much for your reply Michael. My great grandmother Bridgett Galvin Murphy was born in 1862 and was married in 1885. I think she had two sisters Catherine and Julia. I also think that one of the sisters married a man named White.
I look forward to hearing back from you...

Michael Murphy

Mortimer Gallivan

Not related, just posting this in case it might be of use to someone

History of the Catholic Church In Indiana Charles Blanchard, Bowen 1898
MORTIMER D. GALLIVAN, who resides at No. 831 Sanders street, Indianapolis, is a prominent and well-known Catholic citizen. He was born at Darnane Abbey, county Kerry, Ireland, his parents being Daniel and Catherine Gallivan. In 1851 Daniel Gallivan came to the United States to prepare a home for his family in this country, going first to the state of Massachusetts, where, in 1854, the family joined him. He, however, did not long survive, his death occurring June 29, 1855. The children at that time numbered eight, four sons and four daughters, six of whom have passed away. The two that remain are Mortimer D. and his brother John. From Massachusetts the family removed to the state of New York, locating at Moravia, Cayuga county, and when the war of the Rebellion threatened the disruption of the Union, three of the brothers entered the service of the Union. Of these Mortimer D. was the eldest, and he and his brother Patrick became members of company I, Ninth New York heavy artillery. John enlisted in the Fifty-second New York Volunteer infantry. Of the artillery regiment of which the two elder brothers were members, William H. Seward, Jr., son of the famous statesman, was the lieutenant-colonel. Mr. Gallivan participated in some of the most important battles and movements of the war, among them Gen. Sheridan's famous campaign in the Shenandoah valley, and he was present at the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomattox, April 9, 1865. The three brothers were all valuable soldiers, and were all honorably discharged at the close of the war.
Returning to his home in New York, Mortimer D. Gallivan, in connection with his brother, John, disposed of the property they owned in that state, and removed to Missouri, purchasing land in Knox county with the view of making that county a permanent residence. But ill health compelled a change of plan, and since 1871 Mortimer D. has been a resident of Indianapolis. In 1877 his brother John went to the far west, and has since that time devoted himself chiefly to mining. The mother and sisters of the subject of this sketch lie buried in Holy Cross cemetery- in Indianapolis.
The first marriage of Mr. Gallivan took place in 1865 to Mary Sheehan. She died February 20, 1875, leaving three children - Daniel, Kate and John; the two former are living; John died at the age of twenty years. One son, Patrick M., died in infancy. October 14, 1884, Mortimer D. Gallivan was married to Mrs. Ellen McQuade, whose maiden name was Sullivan. Her first husband was also a soldier of the war for the Union. By him she had four children, but all died young. Mr. and Mrs. Gallivan possess and enjoy the confidence and esteem of all their neighbors and friends
Looking for John Gallivan who married Mary McElligott and moved from Ireland? before they had James Gallivan b. 1/20/1879 in Columbia City. And the Patrick Maloney who came to America in 1832 and married Catherine Welsh here in 1836 had a son James L. Maloney who married Mary Ann Lynch 8/21/1876 who had a daughter Catherine Maloney who married James Gallivan in Columbia City? Found an Ellen Gallivan (79) living on a 160 Gallivan family farm in Kenmare, Ireland, related? Do you have more information?

My great-grandfather's 1911 obit lists a brother-in-law, Daniel Galvin in Cambridge. Do you have any info about a Daniel Galvin or Gallivan? If his wife's maiden name was Leary or O'Leary, we should definitely compare notes! My great-grandfather Daniel (O') Leary was born in Kerry and left Ireland around 1867. He also had brothers named Francis and James who immigrated to New England. His mother's maiden name was Margaret Shea. His wife's name was Mary Hussey (born 1854) and her mother was Anna (or Hannah) Sullivan. I am fairly certain that my great-grandparents both hailed from the Caherdaniel/Sneem area, although they may have gotten married in Middletown, Connecticut.

My connection with Annie is that she married into my tree by marrying Mark Mangan. I'm confused by your entries, because I can't duplication the information with civil records.
What I consider a family tree is any one I fit into the branches. Therefore, Annie prior existence is important. I can't tract her back to Ireland (only in words on the Census). This brings up the next step - there are no census between the time she entered the country and the marriage to Mark Mangan. Her widowed mother came to live with her after Mark died, 1900 Census. I "marked" that her mother died between 1900 and 1910 "because" I couldn't find her - but she could be living with another child - 4 of her 7 were still living in 1900. So that's open to interurptation.
I'm a little old lady living with my cat. And research will stay off Aldhimers. Recently someone asked me about Sylvester McGinn, and I have a wonderful collection, and of course, my own family Mangan-Glynn.
I'm very strick with my information, I must be able to validate it, or I mark it NOT FINALIZED.
Please respond if interested, also if you can fill in my gaps.
Thank you, Slad
Ellen G

Hi Scott,

Good to hear from you. I am swamped right now (I'm taking some summer grad classes, and finals start next week). But that will be done as of July 1st. I'll look through and see what I have after that and get back to you. I'd love to check facts/compare the tree too.

Terri

Hello Andrea,

Glad to hear from you. Are you in St. Louis?

The St. Louis County Library Headquarters microfilm department is a good source as well as the Missouri Historical Society Library on Skinker across from Forest Park.

Here's most of what I have:

"St. Louis City Directories"

1868-1869
Sheahan Dennis, lab. r. Cass av. se. cor. 18th (p. 742)

1870-1871
Sheehan Denis, contractor, r. 1722 Cass av. (p. 602)

1880 U.S. Census
Sheehan Dennis, Age: 26, birthplace: Ireland
Address: 1421 N. 18th Street

1899 Gould's Directory (p. 1597)

Sheahan John J. V-Pres Harrigan & Sheahan Undertaking Co. r. 4945 Fountain av

Newpaper and Journal articles:

St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Sunday Morning, Dec. 31, 1905, page 10:

"Memories of Historic Locality Gleaned from the Last King of Kerry Patch".......it says, "Jack Sheehan Survives, Though His Litt'e Kingdom Vanished as the Street Makers Came" .... and "Last Remains of the original Kerry Patch on Eighteenth Street, North of O'Fallon." (street)

It's difficult to make everything out as the microfilmer may have had some trouble, but I believe this being closest to the period probably has the best information. Mentions his father did a little time in prison for supporting the Confederacy, but got out and was a contractor for the Union building city defenses.

1933 (perhaps a book I found at the Historical Society) titled "Happy Days Are Here Again" has a chapter starting on page 75 titled "Kerry Patch" by Jack Ryan

Obituary: Sheahan, John J. Mon. Jan. 14, 1935 at 8 pm

St. Louis Post-Dispatch has an article on page 5A ???
titled "John J.
Hi Terri,

I'm not sure if I answered your response, but I did notice you had a picture of your great-great grandparents, Jeremiah and Nora. His brother Cornelius is my great-great grandfather on my mother's side. I think that picture is very cool. Do you have any others of the Galvin family that you could share? I'm willing to share/exchange information with you on this family line if you'd like...let me know.
Regards,
Scott

I happen to be reading the posting on Sheahans and came across your reply. Denis Sheahan, the first King of Kerry Patch, was my great great grandfather. In your posting, you state "According to the article cited, the Sheahan home at 18th & Cass also served as a post office & grocery store. So there's confirmation that the early settlement really was a self-sufficient "village". I am very much interested in knowing what article you were referring to. I know it was a long time ago that you wrote that posting, but if you could remember, I would be very grateful. Thanking you in advance. Andrea Ketten
I have a Sylvester McGinn and Annie
Gallivan in my family tree. Annie is my great-grandmother Johanna Gallivan Driscoll's sister. Their parents were John and Johanna Toomey Gallivan(Galvin).I am very interested in how far you got in your research and if you've been able to trace them to a specific places in Ireland.
