James (Doug) Galloway was my uncle but I did not know him, I only discovered my Galloway heritage two years ago (in 2007).

Doug had two brothers, Jonathan and Stephen (my father) and one sister, Francis. Richard (Dick) had three children, two boys, one girl. Doug was the grandson of Jonathan Reece, the founder of Chilliwack.

James Galloway

it looks like yours was in ohio born about 1840s. At that time my great great was supposedly born in north carolina. He did move to ohio at some point between 1849-1884 when he married his wife. I have yet to pinpoint when. It is so odd. I cannot find him on anyone's census.

Totally Stumped North Carolina and Ohio Galloways

My galloway line began in North Carolina but I have no proof beyond hearsay what my gggrandfather's parents names are.
I cannot find any census reports or other documentation that supports who his parents are.
His name is William N. Galloway. He was born about 1849 in to be believed Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I estimate his parents born between 1800-1830 or so. I imagine he moved either to Tennessee or Ohio between 1880-1883 because he married his wife Betsey(bettie)Stroud who was from Tennessee. I do have proof that her family moved to Ohio at some point, but because there is not a 1890 census to refer, there is not much to be found. They have several children all of which lived in Ohio except one who lived in New York. I have found them from 1900-1920 all living together. If you think you might be related to him or even have family from that area either respond her directly or email me at Cbaker17@hotmail.com. I appreciate your time!

While working on my Jones tree I studied the Moran family.
As a result I have found more children for the Joseph Galloway married to Mary Moran. They moved from Union County, Ohio to Logan County, Illinois. ---1860,1870 census.
Evidently, Mary Moran's brother John married Diantha Fraikes in Logan County, Illinois. When John Moran died Diantha Fraikes Moran married Haskins Jones. John Moran and Diantha Morans' son Clarence Moran is found living with Joseph and Mary Galloway. Later Clarence Moran is found in Kansas and has a half brother David Luther Jones living with him.

IDo you have a marriage record that shows that Mary's maiden name was Moran?

Marshall Benjamin Galloway of Baltimore, Maryland, b. 1760

I'm looking for (at least) the parents &/or siblings (descendants even) of Marshall Benjamin Galloway. His Revolutionary War records lists his birth as 1760, but not where, or who his parents were. At one time, I did have copies from the web from the National Archives (I lost them in a computer switch out), but I have his enlistment date as Jun 1777 at Lower Cross Road (about 30 miles from Baltimore, MD, and his discharge date as Apr 1783 at Annapolis, MD. Three years later, he marries Hannah Watlin 2 Sep 1786 in Baltimore Co. His military pension (#S3871) is dated 22 Nov 1825 in Sullivan Co., TN (either this is the land he received for his military service, or he sold that and then moved to TN).

In some paperwork I received on the Galloway family, there was a sketch on a descendant of his thru his son Thomas. The descendant had been able to trace the family back to Scotland and connected them with the highland family of McFarland (the Galloway's were lowland Scots - they dressed and talked more like the English - there's various reasons how they became connected). The sketch said that he became a member of the Clan McFarland thru his Galloway ancestors, and served as chaplin for a number of years. He was buried in his kilt.

Hannah Watlin (it is Watlin, according to their marriage record) is said to have been born in 1765 in Ireland and was kidnapped from there as a little girl and put on a boat bound for the American Colonies. She died in 1826 in Sullivan Co., TN, when her horse threw her. She hit a tree and broke her neck.

The family moved around a bit before settling in TN. Several of their children were born in Botetourt Co., VA, so I'm thinking that maybe they lived around some of Marshall's family.

Their children were: Thomas (1787 in Botetourt Co., VA to 1856 in Warren Co. KY); John (1788 in VA to 1855 in TN); James (1792 in Baltimore, MD to 1855 in Sullivan Co., TN); William (1798 in Botetourt Co., VA to 1861 in Shover Springs, Hempstead Co., AR - My line); Abraham (1800 in VA, d. bef 1880); Margaret (b. 1802 VA); Susan or Susannah (b. 1804 VA); Sarah (b. 1806 VA); and Elizabeth (d. bef 1850)

Also, I know that some of the Galloway's of Baltimore were Loyalists, so maybe the reason why his parents are hard to find is that maybe they cut him out considering that he sided with the Colonists. Just a theory.

If anyone has any relating/connecting info, please feel free to contact me.

Kim Fryar Smith
OKC, OK

Galloways from North Carolina, Ohio, and lastly New York

The galloway families that I have are from North Carolina. The exact city and area is unknown. But the names that I have are Roman Galloway(his name is not exact) and Sally Scales Galloway who was born in North Carolina. They had one son that I can find record of which was William Nash Galloway. He had several children with Bettie/Betty Brown or Stroud. Her name is not confirmed as far as her last name goes. At some point, Betty and William were living in Ohio. I do not know if he met her in Ohio as I have heard that her family is from Tennessee. Some of their children are Jeanette, Jennie, Issac, Charles, Eva, and Virginia.
I know for sure that Jeanette died young as well as Eva. Issac died fairly young. Charles at some point moved to New York and married Mary Martin in Brooklyn. If you have any relatives that might fit in, let me know!

Hi Anthony!
My grandfather (fathers father) is Lewis Galloway from North Carolina. He is a Portuguese descendant. I don't know much about him besides him moving up to Boston in the 60's or 70's where a lot of that family branch of Galloways remain. My aunt did an ancestry chart. If you are interested I can send it too you. It might take a few weeks.

Adam Galloway and Sarah Leech Ky to IL

Hello Galloway Researchers: those of you researching the Adam Galloway and Sarah Leach family will find the following link valuable. I found this in an 1883 Jefferson County Illinois History. It reveals that brothers John L. and David (Il, Ark. to Texas) had at least three sisters: (1) Lucinda b. 1817 who married Benjamin Maxfield. Apparently she stayed in Illinois (you can find them on the 1880 Jefferson Co. census); as well as (2) Elizabeth Dicey Galloway b. 1832 who married 1st Samuel Burkes and 2nd John Stacy. She went to Mclennan Co, TX and had a number of children there and then returned to Jefferson Co. Illinois. And finally (3) Sarah Galloway b. 1828 Illinois m. Elijah Flowers. (See 1850 St. Louis and 1860 Jefferson Co. Illinois.) The bio reports that Adam and Sarah had 12 children with 9 living to adulthood. Adam fought in the war of 1812. Adam and Sarah came to Edwards county in 1818; Adam died in Sangamon and Sarah died in Jackson Co. Illinois. This article confirms our hunches/evidence about Adam tying Elizabeth Dicey to John in McLennan 1860. They are living next door to one another.

Here is the link. http://www.carolyar.com/Illinois/JEFFERSON/Jefferson85.htm

I hope this advances our research and I would love to hear from some of the ancestors of these three sisters in Illinois.

Martha Galloway

Re: Galloway chat room?

I would love a Galloway chat room. My ggg granfather was William Galloway and he was born in Scotland around 1824. He married a Margaret Congo, daughter of Sam Congo and Mary Ann Main. That is all the info I have been able to find, since I don't know when he arrived or when he got married, or if he had any family with him when they came. It's as though Margaret never existed as I have been unable to find anything about her at all...lots on her brothers and sisters....names provided by my grandfather, my dad and his Aunt.
