Raymond Gallup was born June 23, 1886 to Charles Kimball Gallup and Carrie Nichols Gallup of Coxsackie, NY, the original owners of my house. The Gallups had two daughters who died before Raymond was born, and a second son, Dudley, born in 1894. Dudley died in 1924, leaving a widow and daughter (names unknown)in New Haven, CT. Charles Gallup died in 1923, and sometime after 1926, Carrie Gallup moved to CT to live with her son Robert and his family. She lived into her nineties. The 1940 Census lists the Raymond Gallup household as including Raymond, wife Mildred, son Robert, daughter Barbara, and mother Carrie Gallup.

Merrill Gallup was my grandfather, through his son Earl Gallup, my father, from Pinckney, Michigan. He has many descendents. I have sort-of become the family historian gathering information and providing it to our many relatives who gather at a family reunion each August. Yes, I would like to have the picture, or at the very least a copy of it. Thank you for your consideration.
I am with you part of the way. I didn't have Capt John GALLUP 1590-1650. I have John GALLUP 1615-1675 d.RI through Capt Joseph GALLUP 1695-1750 d.CT. then instead of Elisha I go to the next son, William GALLUP 1735-1803 d.VT. Anyone else descend from William GALLUP 1735-1803?

Hi. I've been working on this ancestry this week and thought you might like some info, even though it's been year. Just looking at the Gallup male line from Will:

Will M. Gallup 1865-1950 born in Michigan;
Zelotes Gallup 1825-1874 born in Canada, migrated to Michigan;
Ezekiel Gallup 1787-1860 born in Vermont died in Medina MI;
Joseph Gallup 1760-1849 born in Stonington CT, died in Melbourne, Quebec, Can.;
Elisha Gallup 1727-1800 born in Stonington CT, died in Hartland VT;
Capt. Joseph Gallop 1695-1760 born and died in Groton CT;
Benadam Gallup 1655-1727 born and died in Stonington CT;
John Gallup 1615-1675 born in England, died in Rhode Island;
Capt. John Gallup abt 1590-1650 (he left England for Boston in 1630)

The book 'The Genealogical History of the Gallup Family in the United States' by John Douglass Gallup is just one of the wonderful resources available about the Gallup family. It can be found online at Google Books.

Marsha,
Based on the 1940 census, your Leo was the grandson of Everett O. Gallup and Maude Selina Ranney...I'm not sure who his parent was. You probably need to get his death record to get that information. However, after that his line is pretty clear...and goes thus.
Robert Merwin Gallup m. Mildred Viola Greene
Peleg Gallup m. Eunice Martin
George Gallup m. Lydia Gallup
George Gallup m. Freelove Packer - Samuel Gallup m. Jemima Enos
George Gallup & Samuel Gallup are both children of:
Nathaniel Gallup & Hannah Gore
Nathaniel Gallup m. Margaret Gallup
John Gallup (III) m. Elizabeth Harris - Benadam Gallup m. Esther Prentice
John Gallup m. Hannah Anna Lake

Your line merges with mine with Nathaniel Gallup and Hannah Gore. To encourage your budding genealogist, you might want to visit Riverside cemetery in Kalamazoo, MI and take pics of their gravestones and upload them to Findagrave.com and then you can see some of the early gravestones online at either Findagrave.com or do a search for Gallup Home and you will get to my webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gallupfam/

Let us know what you find out!

Carmen Johnson
Home Page: http://carmenj.my100megs.com
Genealogy Page: http://famgen.genheirlooms.com/
Gallup Home: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gallupfam/
PRA Group 7: http://pragroup7.genheirlooms.com
Blog: http://genheirlooms.blogspot.com/
It's good to see that GALLUP & CROSS are in the same families, so to speak. I have traced my Eliza's husband to be Francis GALLUP, born 1824 in Norwalk, Huron Co., Ohio, & died 18 Aug 1891, Denver, Denver Co., Co.

The GALLUP you mention here is born in 1843 in Vt, & died 1925 Vt. However, your Francis Darwin GALLUP did in fact have 2 mother in laws...Elza CROSS GIDDINGS....and Delinda CROSS DRAPER. I'm sure there is a connection here somewhere I just don't see it yet. Am I missing something?

I heard from the Denver Co Probate Ct this week & think they are sending me Eliza C GALLUP's probated will. Maybe this will hold the clue.

Thanks for sharing this info. It's yet another avenue for me to travel.
Looking to determine Eliza C Gallup's maiden name & parentage. From the newspaper article below, I believe her to be my 2 gr grandmother's sister:

The Hocking Sentinel, Logan, Ohio Apr 3 1902

Will of Mrs. Eliza C Gallup of Denver has been admitted to probate, and leaves the estate of $125,000.00 to her sister Sarah A Curtis & nephew Clarence C Curtis of Lakewood, NJ (which I believe to be Lakewood, Oh)

I'm looking to see if Eliza's maiden name is CROSS and to make a positive sibling match between Eliza and Sarah. If this looks familiar, please advise.

The Governor General of Canada from 1831 to 1835 was Matthew Whitworth-Aylmer, 5th Baron Aylmer (24 May 1775–23 February 1850). He was a British military officer and colonial administrator. He was not at all the same person as Aylmer Gallup - where did this idea come from?

I don't have a great deal on this family. But I do have some...Anna Gallup was Anna Wiers b. 1886 married to Andrew Jackson Gallup b. 6/1882 d. 5/16/1950. Andrew Jackson Gallup was the son of Silas Gallup and Elenora Fogle and grandson of James Gallup and Ellen Ann Schoonmaker. James and my ancestor, Silas Gallup were brothers and both are buried in Lyons, NE. I can't find her last name right now but go on wwww.findagrave.com and find Andrew Jackson Gallup and her email link is there. She is apt to have more info on the family!

Carmen

Your posting of this Gallup family interests me because Harriet Gallup of Melbourne, Sherbrooke Co, Quebec married John Nilson Wright (b 1836)and lived in Melbourne. They then moved to Medina Township, Lenawee Co, Michigan to be near other Gallups and Wrights. Could they be related to your query?

We are trying to find the birthplace in Vermont of John Wright's father named LUCIEN who married Jane Young in 1835 in Canada. There children besides John were: Samuel, Mary, Henry, Frederick and Harriet. Can you help? Thanks for checking your records, Janice

Rev. Joel Gallup & wives Lucilla T. Bush & Sarah Ann Briggs

Hi,

This original post is ten years old, but I am hoping this is still of interest to folks. In researching my Crane family, I came across the connection to Rev. Joel Gallup. There are many online family trees that confuse Rev. Joel Gallup and his wife Sarah with the Joel Gallup in Michigan. I thus thought it may be useful to post the information I found concerning this family, and perhaps correct a few of the errors found in these online trees. Note that my main interest is the Crane family and thus I do not plan to do any more investigation of the Joel Gallup family.

REV. JOEL GALLUP, son of Benaiah/Beniah/Baniah Gallup and Sarah Crozier, was born 31 Dec 1817 (his gravestone instead gives the year as 1818). The 1987 Gallup Genealogy gives the location of his birth as Halifax, Vermont, but his death record gives the location as Woodford, Vermont. He died Springfield, Massachusetts, 9 Feb 1888, from cerebral apoplexy and paralysis, and he was buried in the Rensslaerville Cemetery, Rensslaerville, Albany County, New York. His gravestone reads, REV. JOEL GALLUP. / 1818 - 1888 / LUCILLA T. BUSH. / HIS WIFE / 18[??] - 1864

Joel was ordained as a minister on 2 Apr 1842.

He was married first to Lucilla T. Bush say 1856. She was born about 1834, New York and died 1864. She was buried in the Rensslaerville Cemetery, sharing a gravestone with Joel. The 1987 Gallup genealogy states she died 9 January 1835 [sic]. This is certainly a mistake, but it is uncertain if the intention was that she was born 9 January 1835, or that she died 9 January 1865 or perhaps even 1864.

Joel was married secondly to Sarah Ann Briggs, daughter of Alanson Briggs and Artemesia Shumway, circa 1865. Sarah was born on 4 May 1838 in Chatham, Columbia County, New York, and died 31 Jan 1904, probably in Columbia County. She was buried in the Red Rock Cemetery, Red Rock, Canaan, Columbia County, New York, sharing a gravestone with her first husband’s parents. She was married first to George Ford Crane, son of George Hiram Crane and Maria Burrows, on 27 Oct 1857 in Red Rock, Columbia County, New York. George F. Crane died 31 Dec 1858, but he and Sarah had one daughter, Mary Matilda Crane, born 3 Oct 1858. Sarah and her daughter, Mary M. Crane, appeared in the 1860 U.S. Census with [her deceased husband's father], George H. Crane as the head of household, in Canaan, Columbia County, New York. Her gravestone in the Red Rock Cemetery reads, SARAH A. BRIGGS / WIFE OF / GEORGE F. CRANE / AND / REV. JOEL GALLUP / 1838 – 1904.

The 1987 Gallup genealogy gives Joel another wife between Lucilla and Sarah, but no evidence has been found for this other wife. The death of Lucilla in 1864 and the birth of Joel in 1867 would leave very little room for another marriage. If there was an additional marriage, it would probably have been before his marriage to Lucilla.

Joel Gallup was a head of household in the 1860 U.S. Census in Canaan, Columbia County, New York. Living with him was his wife, Lucilla Gallup. Joel did not own any real estate, but had $400 in personal estate. Listed nearby was the household of George H. Crane, where the widow Sarah (Briggs) Crane was living. It was probably during this time that Sarah and Joel met.

Joel Gallop [sic] was a head of household in the 1870 U.S. Census in Tompkins, Delaware County, New York. His household included his wife, Sarah G. [sic] Gallop, his daughter, Myrtle Gallop, Sarah's daughter, Mary Crane, their son, Joel W. Gallop, Joel's father, Beniah Gallop and 36-year old Julia Gallop, whose relationship is unknown. Joel owned $2800 in real estate and Beniah owned $3000 in real and $400 in personal estate.

In 1880 Joel Gallup appeared as a head of household in Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York. His family included his wife, Sarah Gallup, and four children, Myrtle, Joel, Lyman and Lucilla Gallup.

The widow, Sarah Gallup, appeared in the 1900 U.S. Census with her son, Lyman B. Gallup as the head of household, in Chatham, Columbia County, New York

Children of Rev. Joel Gallup and Lucilla T. Bush were as follows:

i. CORNELIA was born circa Sep 1858. She died on 18 Feb 1859 and was buried in the Rensslaerville Cemetery. Her gravestone reads, CORNELIA / daughter of / Joel & Lucilla / GALLUP / died Feb. 18, 1859. / Aged 5 Mos. /[verse illegible].

ii. MYRTLE was born circa 1862 in New York (although the 1880 census gives the location as Vermont).

Children of Rev. Joel Gallup and Sarah Ann Briggs all born in New York were as follows:

i. JOEL W was born circa 1867. The 1987 Gallup genealogy says he died 1826 [sic – 1926] in North Adams, Massachusetts. He married Oresta Amanda Boright.

ii. LYMAN BENIAH, was born in Apr 1871 (1900 census) or 23 May 1871 (1987 Gallup Genealogy) in Tompkins, Delaware County, New York. He died 23 Aug 1934 Hudson, Columbia County, New York and is buried in Chatham. He married in Chatham, 11 Feb 1903, Hattie Manning Moore.

iii. LUCILLA was born 23 Mar 1878. She was called “Lulu” in the 1987 Gallup Genealogy. She married Peter Dunn.

Re: Jesse Gallup, Lake Pleasant, New York

Please notice that when I said Benadam Gallop - I spelled his last name as Gallop - that signifies a descendant of Nathaniel Gallop especially in the 1600's and early 1700's. I don't have a birthdate for this Benadam Gallop (son of Richard Gallop Jr. and Lydia Mathewson) but he was most likely born around 1730.

You have to be very careful with the Benadam Gallups - it is an extremely common first name amongst the Gallup family. You have to be very critical of any info that someone gives you on any of the Benadams because unless the wife's name and dates fit as well as parentage - you can not make a good link between these lines. If you have any questions - as on the Gallup list. There are several of us who have been researching the Gallups for a lot of years!

Carmen Johnson

Lt. Benadam Gallup was b. 18 Apr 1693 in Groton, New London Co., CT and d. 3 Sep 1755 in Ledyard, New London Co., CT - He was married to Eunice Cobb on 11 Jan 1716 in Stonington, New London Co., CT. She was b. 18 Sep 1693 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA and d. 18 Feb 1759 in Groton, New London Co., CT. Both are buried at the Gallup Cemetery, Ledyard, CT. Benadam Gallup had only one wife. I don't know why he is being mentioned in this thread because he doesn't have a connection to Jesse Gallup. My previous email explained that Gallup connection.

Carmen Johnson
