Hi Yvonne,

I am related to the Ayrshire Galt's, however I can only seem to work back to James Galt (married to Mary Ann Cameron), who had a son William Galt, who later moved to Australia.

Do you have any information you would be able to share. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Jude

Agnew, "Belfast Merchants in the 17th century", 1996 (ISBN 1-85182-251-8), p.253, discusses the will of John Galt the elder, proved 2 Oct 1700 (P.R.O.N.I. Given abstracts, D2096/1/15C), and says that his place of origin was probably Irvine, Ayrshire. (I've not checked the two books she gives as sources for that statement.)

Agnew says that her main source of information about the Galt family was the will of his son, John Galt the younger (P.R.O.N.I. D2096/1/15D), proved 11 Dec 1733.

She gives John Galt the younger as having, by his second wife Sarah, daughter of William Moore of Garvey, a daughter Nancy, who, she says, probably married Samuel Smith the younger of Belfast (giving as source "Smith pedigree" at P.R.O.N.I., T2366/23 - one would have to look at the pedigree to judge how "probably").

Please send me an email at oleoghain@aol.com so we can exchange information. I have some more Galt info about the Scottish Galts which I got from an Edgar Allan Poe researcher at a conference.
What are the dates of birth and death for your Galts mentioned below and the ones from Kilbirnie?
Thanks.
Deb Logan

Hi,
I've searched for Logan Galt. My Great Grandfather was Adam Logan Galt, he married Mary Kerr, their eldest was James Galt (my grandfather), his eldest son was David Galt, my father. I think Adam Logan Galt's father was named John Galt, and I've got a feeling they were related in some way to John Galt the Scottish writer. All came from Ayrshire in Scotland. I've seen a picture of a large family portrait entitled Galts at Woodside, Kilbirnie. But your bit could be how the Logan Galt names were fused.

Some of the resources I found were:
"The Galt Families: Notes on their Origin and their History with Genealogical Lists" by Howard Spillman Galt, printed by the Sheffield Print Shop, Yenching University, Pekping, China. 163 pages

"History and Genealogy of the Ege Family in the United States, 1738-1911" by Rev Thompson P Ege, D.D., Printed by The Star Printing Co, 1911. 70+ pages

Correspondance from Mary Meares Galt to Mary Carrington, dated August 1961. 16 pages.

Family chart by Rogers Harrington Galt, with Mary Meares Galt, 1934 (3 sheets - 11"X17")

I have these in copies, if you want to pay for coping and mailing, I can send them to you. I did much of my research at the College of William and Mary.

Re: Virginia Galts

I have worked on a Portsmouth Galt, Gabriel Alexander Dickie Galt, MD - b.1834 and d.1908, buried at Historic St Luke's Church in Smithfield, VA. His father was Gabriel Galt and his mother was Elizabeth Browne. Gabriel Galt was in the Navy and they lived on Middle St in what is now Old Towne. The house is no longer standing. One reference that I found, reviewing notes done in 2004, was that Gabriel Galt had been married in 1825 to ?. He married Elizabeth Browne in 1829. Hard to think that he had divorced his first wife, that was not very common then.

There is an 1850 Portsmouth Census with a 60 yo Ann Galt. Don't know how she might relate. The Portsmouth Galts had relatives in Norfolk and Williamsburg. The Norfolk Galts seemed to have moved to the western mountains during and after the yellow fever epidemic - during which the father, Alexander, postmaster of Norfolk, died. I wonder if your Ann was related to them and was living with a grandchild in Portsmouth, 1850. I didn't recognize the name of the household she was with. Very illustrious family and well documented. 16 doctors, two artists (one sculpted the statue of T. Jefferson that is in the rotunda at the University of VA), another founded the APVA. Are you connected to them?

The name of John Gemmell is interesting. Where can I find out more? There was a minister, John Gemmell, at St Luke's Church (would have simply been known as the brick church of Newport Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia) in the second quarter of the 18th century. I'd have to get out the vestry book to pin down the dates. There was a family of "Galts" across the James River around that time, as well.

Hi Jeanie,

I have a connection to this couple and their son Alexander, but according to the birth registration of Alexander's daughter Jane in Irvine, Ayr in 1855, he was born in Co. Antrim, Ireland.

I have information on Alexander, his marriage and children, and his daughter Jane's marriage to John Carson. Please write if you would like to compare notes.

Jacky

Galt Family

George Frederic Galt, son of Hon. Thomas Galt (Toronto) married Margaret Jane Smith, 1883. She was sister to my gr-grfa. Edward Hingston Smith MD. Galts had at least 4 children as I have a photo ca. 1892. Does anyone know this Manitoban family? I believe two of Galt children were Albert and Victoria.

Lynne,

The LDS IGI has a marriage for a Mary Anne Galt to James Brown on 24 April 1835 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire. This was based on an entry on old parish records. There are also references to the birth of a Mary Ann Galt in 1817 Muirkirk, but without a published source other than as submitted by an LDS church member. Sometimes these submissions are based on the assumption that the marriage took place in the bride's parish and that she was 18 years old.

There are also listings for children probably born to the couple - all in Muirkirk. Mary Ann Brown born 1836, James 1838, Agnes 1841, Margaret 1843, Alexander 1845, David 1848, Catherine 1850 and William 1854.

You may have gotten lucky. The IGI lists the marriage of Agnes Brown, apparently the daughter of Mary Ann Galt and James Brown, on 24 Feb 1856 in Muirkirk, to Hugh Andrew Faddes. Clicking on the groom gives his parents and a slew of their children.

From 1855 onward, you've got statutory registration to work with - usually quite reliable. You can search online for the images of individual registrations at scotlandspeople.gov. And it may turn out that the LDS member who submitted the details above is a relative!

This is just a quick look through familysearch.org .

However, you should be starting with your parents, then grandparents, and work backwards - proving each generation as you go, rather than starting with your 3G Grandmother and coming forward. Otherwise you run the substantial risk of "adopting" the wrong ancestors<G>.

Good luck with your search. My Galts are from Kilmaurs and Kilmarnock about that time.

Cheers!

Tim MIllar

GALT, WILLIAM WYLIE; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

GALT, WILLIAM WYLIE

Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Army, 168th Infantry, 34th Infantry Division. Place and date: At Villa Crocetta, Italy, 29 May 1944. Entered service at: Stanford, Mont. Birth: Geyser, Mont. G.O. No.: 1, 1 February 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Galt, Battalion S3, at a particularly critical period following 2 unsuccessful attacks by his battalion, of his own volition went forward and ascertained just how critical the situation was. He volunteered, at the risk of his life, personally to lead the battalion against the objective. When the lone remaining tank destroyer refused to go forward, Capt. Galt jumped on the tank destroyer and ordered it to precede the attack. As the tank destroyer moved forward, followed by a company of riflemen, Capt. Galt manned the .30-caliber machinegun in the turret of the tank destroyer, located and directed fire on an enemy 77mm. anti-tank gun, and destroyed it. Nearing the enemy positions, Capt. Galt stood fully exposed in the turret, ceaselessly firing his machinegun and tossing hand grenades into the enemy zigzag series of trenches despite the hail of sniper and machinegun bullets ricocheting off the tank destroyer. As the tank destroyer moved, Capt. Galt so maneuvered it that 40 of the enemy were trapped in one trench. When they refused to surrender, Capt. Galt pressed the trigger of the machinegun and dispatched every one of them. A few minutes later an 88mm shell struck the tank destroyer and Capt. Galt fell mortally wounded across his machinegun. He had personally killed 40 Germans and wounded many more. Capt. Galt pitted his judgment and superb courage against overwhelming odds, exemplifying the highest measure of devotion to his country and the finest traditions of the U.S. Army.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Great Falls, Montana

Cemetery: Mount Olivet Cemetery

Born: 1919 Montana

Died: 1944 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Additional Information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_go/gault...

Note: This is not my ancestry. However many of the Galt's and other families did not register the children. There were Galt's in nearby Sorn.

I see you are also interested in the name Faddes.
Hi Yvonne

I don't know if you are aware of John Galt who was a writer and Coliniser in Canada. John was born like my own ancestor John Galt in Irvine/Ayrshire. The homelands it appears from Black's directory.

John Galt the writer was born in 1779 and died in Greenock in 1839.
His family went to Greenock c 1790.

I have started to look at the earlier Galt pre 1800 in Greenock. I can see that a James Galt/ Jean Reid daughter Penelope Galtb 1790 came back and married in Stewarton/Ayrshire.
There is also another Penelope Galt in Irvine. They were probably cousins.

Angela C

Hi Angela
I have very little information as I ahven't had time to research this line of the family yet. The only sibling I have for Jane Gault is an E Gault (possibly Ellen after the mother) born about 1806 and their parents John Gault (born abt 1780's) and Ellen Douglas (born abt 1785ish) and married in Belfsat in 1805. If I go by Jane's daughters names there may have been a Mary and or Margaret and the boys were Robert and George. They would probably be cousins somewhere along the line.
Sorry I can't be of any other help just now but will get to this family one day, famous last words. Would like to keep in touch though. Regards Joyce

If you are interested, i could scan and e mail it to you. see my recent post to Cherie regarding the same family. the family tree does cite an Ann Galt and i beleive the time frame fits your enquiry, however there is no information or mention of Samuel Smith in the tree so am unable to specifically confirm if it is the relevant Ann. nevertheless you may be interested in these materials. btw, i need to give credit to other persons who developed this tree, but that information is not at hand this moment.

Cherie: sorry for the year delay, perhaps you've made progress elsewhere. if not, i have a family tree with your William Howard Galt who married Sarah Ann Moore in 1869. this tree covers Coleraine Galts through the late 16oos, 1700s and into the 1800. This is from information i found in PRONI at Belfast. there is good information on Coleraine families, including the Galts. i can e mail this to you if you wish, it would appear to be directly on point for your investigations. please confirm. cheers. Bruce.

I'm trying to trace the family of William Howard Galt born about 1853 in Coleraine, Ireland. He married Sarah Ann Moore.

Maybe they tie into your Ann Galt Coleraine family?

William and Sarah's children (born between 1870 and 1881):
William Howard Curtis Galt b1870
George Moore Galt b1871
Charles John Galt b1873 emigrated to New Zealand, Canterbury
Mary Barklie Galt b1875
Sarah Jane Galt b1877
Griffin Curtis Galt b1881

Charles John Galt (s.o. William Howard Galt), married Margaret May Mary Pearse in New Zealand 1906 and had 2 children:
Howard Charles Curtis Galt b. 1908
Gladys Ruth Galt b. 1910

Howard CC Galt never married, but Gladys Galt married Thomas Wesley Southam 1934, and had 5 children (all still living):
Joan Ruth Southam
Hazel Gladys Southam (my mother)
Bruce Thomas Southam
Marion Judith Southam
Kenneth David Southam

I would be grateful if you know of any links to William Howard Galt.

Thanks
Cherie

Hi Judy
I have been researching my GALT family tree for the past 15 years or so. My Galt family are from Refrewshire, Scotland. There seems to be about four branches of the Galt family- Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Isle of Bute and Stirling. The Galts typically moved away from these areas and moved to the likes of Glasgow and Edinburgh in the early to mid 1800s.

Yvonne Galt-Gourlay
