I'm a descendant of another of Robert (Bert) Galt's siblings, Archibald Malcolm (Mal). He was my maternal Grandfather. Their father, William, born Melbourne, was married to Ada Esther Hackney and had six sons and two daughters. Some of their descendants are still farming in the same area.

I am working on an interesting story of the daughter of John Minson Galt III(1808-3/4/1868), Emily Virginia Galt (1837-1914).

She is the subject of a "ghost" story at the former Augusta Arsenal where her father was the military storekeeper from 1845 to 1861. It has been locally reported that Emily committed suicide there in 1861.

According to the census records, she was a patient at the Eastern State Hospital from 1900 to 1914. However, I have been unable to locate exactly when she became a patient or for what. It was a mental institution but the diagnosis would a helpful bit of information. Emily also worked at the St. Johns Orphanage in Washington DC. But once again, the only years known are 1880-1884. She may have been there longer.

I would like to create a direct line chart of her family from Samuel I, but the Ege and Howard Spillman Galt books are a bit confusing. Does anyone have this?

Thanks for any help.

I wondered whether you knew anything about the ancestry of novelist John Galt (b 2/5/1779 irvine).

He was the son of a sea captain John Galt and Jean Thomson who married in August 1776 in Irvine. I had thought that this JG was bp 12/3/ 1749 by John Galt and Agnes Allan but have seen a biography that states that he was bp28/11/1750 by John Galt and Margaret or Agnes Wilson in Stewarton.

Any ideas gratefully received!

stephen

Yes, Rogers Harrison Galt, Commodore, USN, b 1850, d 1910, is a grandson of Alexander Galt and Mary Silvester Galt. I am not a relative, but, as volunteer assistant to Richard Austin, curator emeritus of Historic St Luke's Church in Isle of Wight Co, VA, I have researched Gabriel Alexander Dickie Galt, a first cousin once removed of R H Galt, GAD Galt was a surgeon in the CSA, improved the trephine, a surgical tool. Alexander Galt moved from Williamsburg to Norfolk. GAD Galt was born in Portsmouth. Very detailed family tree printed in the reference in my previous post.

A Rogers Harrison Galt, b 1850 d 1910, a Commodore USN, was a member of the large and distinguished Samuel Galt family of Williamburg, VA. The family is well documented in the Swem Library at William and Mary Library and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library at Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Rogers Harrison Galt compiled a chart of the Virginia Galts (mss 6.2 G1395:1) with his sister Mary Meares Galt. If there is a picture of his academy class, I would think the Swemm or Rockefeller would have it.

Of course, now that I've dug out my notebooks to respond, I realize, the message is that someone has the photo and can supply it if someone wants it. My bad - I'll go to bed now. I'm working on a relative, Gabriel Alexander Dickie Galt, MD who improved the surgical tool called the trephine during the Civil War and is buried at Historic St Luke's Church in Isle of Wight, VA. Trying to find out information on his wife ?Rosa Beale.

Kristy,
I'm a member of the GALT list and I went in to check your post amd it blew my socks! My mother's maiden name was GAULT. But that isn't what blew my socks off, what did is that you live in Trinidad! My Dad was stationed to Waller Field in Trinidad in 1948-1949. He was a US helicopter pilot and did air sea rescue. He is now 94 y/o. My brother was born there and I remember a little bit about the island. My mother talked all my life about a Trinidad resident who was my nanny and later nanny to my brother and I. This lady was a Trinidad born lady named HAZEL. I have been trying for years to locate her name and hopefully someone from her family. My Dad says she lived off base and so would be on Trinidad Census or other records for 1948-1950. Would you be interested in doing some research for me? I'd happily pay you for your time and effort? The only thing I know about her is that her name was HAZEL and she was in her late 20's in 1949. My Mom and Dad lived on the base, so there may be some records of her working on the post. if you are interested in helping me, please contact me at sina28@aol.com

Linda

There are Galts in Virginia too. My GGG Grandfather (William Galt) came to Virginia in 1775. He came from Parish of Loans, Dundonald, Ayreshire, Scotland. He lived in Richmond Virginia all of his life. He died in 1825. His two sons (James & William) lived all their lives in Fluvanna County, Virginia. Only one of James' sons survived and had children. One of my G Uncles (James Henry Galt) lived in Virginia and New Jersey. The other (Thomas Colquhoun Galt, Jr.) lived in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am a descendent of their sister (Mary Virginia Galt) who lived in Fluvanna County, Virginia. I have cousins that I can not find. HELP!!

Good evening Darren,
I don't have any proof about most of these bits of Tree I'm afraid,
I have seen the OPRs at various Family History Centres but am not 100% sure about tieing them into my Tree.Agnes Galt and Duncan McCallum were my GGG grandparents - beyond that it is conjectural!! Some Galts came from Coleraine in Northern Ireland.
Anyway.
As to the Galts in Europe, or Scotland, it's funny the way they either migrated or died out - they might still be in Ayrshire but I don't know -
Agnes Galt's brother John is yours - and went to the US
Janet her sister might have married David Murray though I am not sure
James Galt I can't trace
Robert died in infancy
If we go back to the previous generation, there are more children = BUT It's so far back that I haven't found any reliable records...
Hugh I think married Agnes Smith -
James is ours
William may have married but there are a couple of possibilities
Jean - possible marriages
E;lizabeth - ditto
David married Ann Currie and had daughter Jean in Kilmarnock
Mary married William Brown
John unsure
Adam married Mary McAuley
Sorry I'm not able to help!
Your best bet might be to spemd a few days at the Record Office in Edinburgh. You can now access a lot of them in Glasgow, I believe.
Best wishes
Catherine

>
> Thank you for the information Catherine. I have John Galt and Elizabeth Wright on my "maybe" list but I am not ready to confirm it. Do you have access to this information that can help me add them in?
>
> Also, I have the opportunity to travel to Europe on occasion and I was wondering if any of our family still resides there? If so, is their a concentration center where the Galt's reside? Any information would be helpful.
>
> Thanks again,
> Darren
>
> Important Note:
> The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
Good morning Darren,
Thank you for posting your Galt line.
What I have is not exactly the same as you, but in broad essentials it matches.
Starting from your point furthest back in time,
I have James Galt born 13 June 1769 in Kilmarnock who married Agnes Harper on 4 Feb 1878 Irvine Ayrshire.
His parents were John Galt born Riccarton 21 Dec 1740 and Elizabeth Wright born about 1840 Kilmarnock.
I have John's parents as Hugh Galt born about 1715 Ayrshire and Elizabeth Adam born 25 November 1702 Galston. they married 23 January Kilmarnock.
Elizabeth's father was John Adam born 16 September 1666.

Now going forward,
I have your John who married Margaret McClymont born 28 December 1783 in Dundonald . Margaret was born 28 March 1789 and died 15 April 1848. They married 1 December 1807 in Dundonald.
Thank you for completing your branch!

I descend from James Galt and Agnes Harper's daughter Agnes Galt 6 Aug 1794 - not sure when . I must check it out! she married Duncan McCallum . I can send you more if you like. Your message has been good for me because it has reminded me I must check more on this line.
Best wishes Catherine

Yes, not sure if you are still on here. This is an old post. But here is what I have from my family. I have some clues beyond this, but have not yet confirmed.

Here is the chain I believe to be fact:

Father:
Darryl Galt - Born Dec. 14th 1943, Jamestown, ND Spouse: Carol Irmen - Aug. 22nd 1941

GrandFather:
Fern Galt - Born July 4th, 1908. Stutsman County, ND Spouse: Marjorie Posey

Great-Grandfather
William Galt - Born Sept. 1st, 1881, Freeborn County, MN Spouse: Cora English

Great-Great-Grandfather
William Wylie Galt - Born May 8th, 1854, Freeborn County, MN (or maybe WI) Spouse: Emmaretta Robinson

Great-Great-Great Grandfather
John Galt - Born Jan. 14th, 1811, Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland Spouse: Jeanette (Janet) Wylie

Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather
John Galt - Born abt 1783, Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland Spouse: Margaret McClymont

Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather
James Galt - Born Sept 4th, 1758 Ayrshire, Scotland Spouse: Agnes Harper

Let me know if anyone can add to this.

Darren Galt

Agnew, "Belfast Merchants in the 17th century", 1996 (ISBN 1-85182-251-8), p.253, discusses the will of John Galt the elder, proved 2 Oct 1700 (P.R.O.N.I. Given abstracts, D2096/1/15C), and says that his place of origin was probably Irvine, Ayrshire. (I've not checked the two books she gives as sources for that statement.)

Agnew says that her main source of information about the Galt family was the will of his son, John Galt the younger (P.R.O.N.I. D2096/1/15D), proved 11 Dec 1733.

She gives John Galt the younger as having, by his second wife Sarah, daughter of William Moore of Garvey, a daughter Nancy, who, she says, probably married Samuel Smith the younger of Belfast (giving as source "Smith pedigree" at P.R.O.N.I., T2366/23 - one would have to look at the pedigree to judge how "probably").

Hi,
I've searched for Logan Galt. My Great Grandfather was Adam Logan Galt, he married Mary Kerr, their eldest was James Galt (my grandfather), his eldest son was David Galt, my father. I think Adam Logan Galt's father was named John Galt, and I've got a feeling they were related in some way to John Galt the Scottish writer. All came from Ayrshire in Scotland. I've seen a picture of a large family portrait entitled Galts at Woodside, Kilbirnie. But your bit could be how the Logan Galt names were fused.

I did much of my research at the College of William and Mary.

Re: Virginia Galts

I have worked on a Portsmouth Galt, Gabriel Alexander Dickie Galt, MD - b.1834 and d.1908, buried at Historic St Luke's Church in Smithfield, VA. His father was Gabriel Galt and his mother was Elizabeth Browne. Gabriel Galt was in the Navy and they lived on Middle St in what is now Old Towne. The house is no longer standing. One reference that I found, reviewing notes done in 2004, was that Gabriel Galt had been married in 1825 to ?. He married Elizabeth Browne in 1829. Hard to think that he had divorced his first wife, that was not very common then.

There is an 1850 Portsmouth Census with a 60 yo Ann Galt. Don't know how she might relate. The Portsmouth Galts had relatives in Norfolk and Williamsburg. The Norfolk Galts seemed to have moved to the western mountains during and after the yellow fever epidemic - during which the father, Alexander, postmaster of Norfolk, died. I wonder if your Ann was related to them and was living with a grandchild in Portsmouth, 1850. I didn't recognize the name of the household she was with. Very illustrious family and well documented. 16 doctors, two artists (one sculpted the statue of T. Jefferson that is in the rotunda at the University of VA), another founded the APVA. Are you connected to them?

I would like to find anyone whose ancestry goes back to Elgin, Scotland before 1900 with the purpose of finding any living relatives.
My great grandfather was John Galt of Elgin (1827 to 1911), married to Ann MacRae. They had 2 sons, John and Peter, and 2 daughters Flora (York) and Jane.
