Dear family, sorry to disappoint the whole lot of you. We are not Jewish, we are not famous, and we are not rich. The name originated in Galvan, Guitiriz, Province of Lugo, Galicia, Spain. Visit the Iglesia del Calvario and ask to see the registro de nacimientos, the occupation of those named Galvez is listed as either Papelero (paper maker), or Talabartero (leather worker) for about three centuries, the times during which records were available. And we are listed as catholic. The name simply means: from Galvan, but some say it means son of Galvo.

I hope I may be able to help some of you. Have you tried to find any relatives on Facebook yet?

I am a member of a patriotic organization that pays tribute to the memory of Galvez & Spain's contribution to the US. I have met some of the distant ancestors of Galvez while they visited here in Galveston, Tx last summer. Try to contact the Galveston Historical Society & or the famous Galvez Hotel. The hotel just celebrated the 100th anniversary so Jose Galvez Anquita & his sister came here for the bash. Jose is an Atty in Marbella, Spain. See www.granaderos.org for some photos if not I may be able to supply a few. Best wishes!

Re: Looking for Galvez from Sahuayo, Michoacan Mexico

We are Galvez from Jiquilpan, Michoacan Mexico. Sahuayo, I think is the largest city close to Jiquilpan. We have 3 generations of Samuel(s). The 1st being an only child. I think he was orphaned at a young age and brought up by Aunts on his mother's side. His father was Gabriel Galvez and served in the Mexican army. I don't have any roots for him, just a name. I had heard as well the there are many Galvez in the area. The only record I have found in the 1930 Census he is living with a Delores Pulido.

My husband is also a Galvez decedent and I have the names of his 3 children and know Bernardo in his will had Felicitas return to Spain with the children to get a better education. That Matilda had three girls, Gertrude died at 15 or 16. I don't have any record of Miguel ever marring or having children. What I was wondering is did you ever get the names for the children, birth or death record.

I am looking for information on my GGGGrandmother, Maria Fabiola Galvez (born about 1775 in Andalusia, Spain) and her family. Maria married Fritz Fassbender de Wintersdorf, who had been a member of Napoleon's retreating army after the defeat of the army in Andalusia. Maria went back to Trier in what was then the Empire of France, and had a daughter, Margaretha, who later emigrated to Texas with her hsuband Otto Phillip de Lassaulx in the 1850s.

Hi,

I was born in New York City; my parents are from Colombia. I was in Andalucía in August of 2008, and I must say that I was very disappointed. The architecture was spectacular but the people were very rude. I am in the process of finding out where my ancestors are from. They were probably from Spain, hence the name, Gálvez. If my ancestors were from Andalucía should I still be disappointed. Please advise.

Sinceramente,
John M. Gálvez

Steve,

As I said, I am adopted and I may not have all my facts correct. Early in my life I used the last name Galveston(Galvezton as I argued with the social worker). Until recently I had no idea that it had been shortened to Galvez. my records also state that I am Cuban born as well as Born in the Detroit area. I have always been told my fathers name is Antonio Galveston/Galvez. Anything you can offer wauld surely help my curiosity. This is strictly for informational purposes .

In trying to locate a particular SULLIVAN family, I remember a married couple named GALVEZ who were related and visited them a lot in Tulsa, OK where I grew up in the 1960s-90s. The name was Joe, but could have actually been the wife named Jo. I was the constant companion of the SULLIVAN daughter, Patricia. Back then I went by Margaret. I feel certain this couple is deceased by now, this is a long shot for trying to locate the James SULLIVAN family or to find Patricia.

Felix & Moses Galvez

I am looking for my relatives on the Galvez side of the family. Felix Galvez is my grandfather who was born in 1899 and died on 16 Sept 1990 in Colorado. He married Stella Woodson. Last information I have is from the 1930 Federal Census putting them at Casper, Wyoming. At the time he was 30 and she was 20 years old. and at the time they had only two children Johnny and Marguerite, but they had alot more children. Moses is his brother who never married and has not children that I know of at this time. Family that is still alive live in Colorado, Washington, Utah. But I have a feeling that there are relatives in Wyoming as well but have not had any luck trying to find them. Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you think they came from Malaga Spain instead of Magdal (?). My nephew was just in Malaga and said the Galvez name is everywhere. Thanks for responding to my message. I look forward to hearing more from you. Maybe you can get more information from her death certificate, or from one of her children's death certificates.
