Hi, George. Do you know if Joshua was the father of Samuel Galyean b 1812, married Susan Mitchell, d 1898, buried near Corinth, MS? If so, he would be my gggggf. My grandmother was Molly Florence, daughter of Tobias (Tobe), son of Thomas Jefferson. Thanks in advance..

I'm trying to confirm our Samuel is the son of Joshua Gallion of MD/NC/TN. If so, I'll be able to go back pretty far that way. Contact me if you have or need any info..

Esther Angeline Davis Galyean

I am the great-grandson of Tobias Crossling(Tobe)Galyean and, while working on my family tree I found some conflicting info. According to family info, Tobe was born 12 Oct 1876, and married Esther Angeline Davis, born 24 Jul 1869. Funeral records from 1946 have Tobe being born in 1875, and marrying "Easter Ester Davis," born in 1870. Does anyone know which is correct?

I'm just getting started in genealogy, but I have info on Tommy and Betty's parents, as well as the entire branch of Sam and Susan's tree through 1994. It may be too late but I would be glad to share any info you would need. My name is Matt Rhodes, and my email is mlrhode@gmail.com.

MAKCALYEAN

Starting a 2nd thread here:
My ancestors were Maclaines and through DNA ancestry I have several distant matches to Galyeans, Gallions, and Galyens (and being the NW Irish haplotype, they are likely of McGallion/McGalyean). I have gotten my ancestry back to a John M'Clane in Londonderry c. 1630. Upon trying to find his marriage in Scotland, I found a possible match with something very interesting.

In Prestonpans, outside Edinburgh in 1616, John MacClane married Jonet Jolie. In searching throughout the rest of the parish I saw John had a sister named Jonat MacClane and on her marriage record, her father is noted as
THOMAS MAKCALYEANE

After some research, it turns out his surname is spelled correctly and he is the master of Edinburgh College.

Could our lines both have been Makcalyeane and there was a spelling difference circa 1600 and our ancestors were separated? Interesting thought.

Re: Galyean Origins

I'm guessing most of you are from the NC Galyean family, correct?
I found mid-1700s records of Galyean/Gallion in Cheshire, England, not to mention in the same time-frame it appears in Northern Ireland as Gallion/Gallen/Gallon/Galin phoenetic spellings in Antrim, Tyrone, and Donegal. I found there was an Ulster name "McGallion" and the following would explain my DNA connection to several Galyeans. My DNA matches James Gallion, David Galyean, Roy Galyean, Richard Galyen. Two of which are within 19 generations (early 1600s). My other matches are to O'Byrnes, O'Doughertys, McGoverns, Fannings, Gallaghers, Campbells, Reillys and Kellys. So for the notes of all Galyean genealogists, this mostly disproves the French origins of the name.

"The name "McGallion" is probably of Irish or Scot origin and can be found in both countries present day. It is most likely of Irish origin and possibly derived from the Gaileoin "race or tribe" of Irish Mythology. Scholars have placed the arrival of the Gaileoin in Ireland at about 500 to 300 B.C.. In the mythological tale, the "Tain Bo Cuilange," The Gaileoin play a prominent role as warriors in the army of Ailill and Medb, king and queen of Connacht,in their raid on Ulster. There are other references to the Gaileoin warriors in the myths, some not very flattering. Some scholars and researchers of Irish Mythology believe that some peoples and events of Irish Myth were grounded in fact. The Gaileoin are believed to have been real people that survived into early historical times, beginning about 500 A.D., as the Galienga Mor and Galienga Brecc. They seemed to have been strongest in Leinster and northern Connacht and to have remained as prominent tribes to about the 10th century. In about the tenth century the Normans (French) invaded Ireland and became a power to be reckoned with. Under the Normans some parts of Ireland were divided into baronies. "Muchaire Galienga" (The plain of the Galienga) was one such barony. The Normans though, applied their spelling and replaced the Gaelic "Galienga" with Gallion. And combined it with the Gaelic word "mor," meaning great. The two combined together became the present day word "morgallion," meaning the; "Great Galienga." The barony is still recognized under the Irish. At least one other place name in Ireland carries the Gallion name; Slieve Gallion (mountain) in County Derry in Ulster. An Irish folk song "Slieve Gallion Braes" commemorates Slieve Gallion.

As a surname the McGallion name may have first carried the O prefix rather than the "mac" prefix of the present. If McGallion is derrived from early mythology then its origins would probably trace back to about 500 to 300 B.C. to the Gaileoin of the myths.

There are many variant spellings of Irish words and names in the myths and it is said that one is no more or less correct than another. Gaileoin for example can be spelled as Gallion, Galion, Galian, Galioin, Galiain and many others."

Thank you very much for the reply RedVDub1, it makes these matches more interesting. My DNA test confirmed a mutation for the "Niall Of the Nine Hostages" NW Irish Haplotype, the progenitor of which lived in Northern Ireland around 400ad and has the greatest amount of descendants in N. Ireland and the western isles of Scotland. Perhaps there is more than one origin of the name or some variants could be a misspelling of something else.

Thanks again!

Almost all Gallions/Galyeans/Galyons in America today descend from one Joseph Gallion who came to America in 1664 from London, England. The Gallions in England are thought to be of French origin with the French spelling of the name being Gallienne. We find Gallions in England as early as 1160 and in the London area as early as 1330.

It looks like there are Galyean's on my tree. Elizabeth Johnson Clifford likely lost her husband, Dennis Clifford, sometime before 1860. It looks like she then married a Galyean as the two famlies were blended on the 1870 census. They also were living in the Boydsville AR area.

Thank you for the information. My father Arthur Oscar Galyean Jr. has asked me to take to the internet to find out His fathers parents names. Arthur Oscar Galyean Senior, Born 10.9.04 Vandalia Illinois was orphaned by the time he was 5, relatives in Colorado took him in and raised him. Years later he needed to get his birth records to obtain a passport and learned the court house had burned to the ground.. I located an Anna Galyean who I am almost positive was his mother or Aunt, as the other names for children in her household match our family knowlage.. the 1910 census for precint 13 Las Animas Colorado is where our story becomes uncertian... Earl galyean we know by newspaper articles was shot by a playmate at the local fair grounds and died, my father went to his grave site and had a new gravemarker made. Zoe is my grandfathers Cousin? So Anna would be Oscars Aunt? I feel we are so close to putting the pices back together my father is 76 and I'd love to find the link for him as he was an only child and Had two daughters my sister is married and I am the last GALYEAN I intend on keeping my last name as it means so much to him that his fathers birth parents are never forgoten.
Debi Galyean
My gr gr grandmother was Minnie Longnecker(Galyean) from my research she was the daughter of Jesse and Cathrine Galyean from the Iowa and Indiana area. Jesse's father was Jacob B:1785 and Jacob's father was Jacob B: 1756 and then another Jacob who I belive was married to Elizabeth Arnold. but all my information is still newly researched. My grandmother has more information, a whole packet of pictures.
But Minnie lived in died in Wa mostly near the coast as did her decendeds.
Any information would be great!!
Hi,

I would like to thank you very much for your prompt replies and update regarding this individual, Ron himself. However, Unfournately I hate to break the news to you but I believe I had been warned by my Galyean's extended families in Nevada.

From what she appearantly learned through internet somehow was that Ron was indeed a murderer in Indianapolis area. But both of us couldn't confirm if it's the same person that you were referring to me about.

I have had some fair share of struggle trying to post his picture to get further confirmation if it's actually him or just other Ron?

How about if we exchange our e-mail address instead? You can e-mail me to either: David.Galyean@yahoo.com (or) HerbFella@aol.com so I can insert this link and picture.

Related To Story

Ronald Galyean

Police: Former Family Friend Stabbed Woman At Home
Investigators Unsure Of Motive In Stabbing

POSTED: 7:25 am EDT September 15, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS -- A stabbing suspect was arrested late Monday night after a struggle with officers on Indianapolis' east side.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson said Ronald Galyean, 41, knocked on the front door at the home of Paula Martini, 41, in the 7600 block of Hidden Valley Lane at about 8:45 p.m.

When Martini answered the door, Galyean forced his way in and stabbed her in the chest in front of her 16-year-old son, police said.

Investigators said they aren't sure why the stabbing happened, but said residents identified Galyean as a previous family friend.

After the stabbing, Martini went to a neighboring home to call for help. Martini was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition early Tuesday morning.

Galyean was found a short time later at his home in the 7900 block of Souter Drive. Officers said they used a Taser to subdue Galyean before his arrest.

Galyean faces charges of attempted murder and resisting law enforcement.

Copyright 2009 by TheIndyChannel.com All rights reserved.
I am looking for information, date of birth and date of death, on Amos Galyean. He is a son of Young Galyean/Gallion and Nancy. He was born around 1809 in North Carolina. He married Mary Polly Norman in 1833 and then married Ellen M. Pinner about 1875 (after Mary Polly's death). Last known residence was in 1880 in Mills River, Henderson County, NC. I have not found him on the 1900 census, so I am assuming he passed away some time between 1880 and 1900.

If anyone has addition information on him, I would appreciate it!

Your "Yantee" is most probably Yancy Galyen born in NC May 16th 1862 to Henderson and Tellitha Hodges Galyen. (Wm.) `Henderson was killed in the Civil War and Tellitha died ca. 1868. Yancy married a Molly Young on Dec. 30th, 1883. I believe that Wm. Henderson was son to a a Samuel Jr. and Eliz. Thorp (an educated guess) and a Gson to a Samuel and Molly Gallion. Wm. Henderson shows in the 1850 household of Samuel and Molly as their grandson. Samuel was the youngest son of Jacob and Eliz. Arnold Gallion of the 1790 Surry Co., NC census. Jacob was born ca. 1753 in Harford Co., MD to Thomas and Mary Young Gallion who themselves were married ca. 1733 also in Harford Co. Thomas was born ca. 1707 also in Harford Co., MD to a John and Mary Wright? Gallion. John was born ca. 1670 in Harford Co. to a Joseph Gallion and either a Sarah or an Alice (his first or second wife). Joseph came to Harford Co. (Bush River) in 1664 from London, England where he was born ca. 1633 to Wm. and Joanne Palmer Gallion who themselves were married ca. 1615 in Chigwell, Exxes. I think Wm. was born ca. 1590 in London..there the trail stops for now.

You will fine Yancy as an 8 yr. old in the 1870 household of Jiles and Sarah Hodges who were the parents of Eliz. Tellitha Hodges, mother to Yancy. According to an internet communication Yancy and his wife, Mary Jane Yoaung, were in Watauga Co., NC ca. 1910 although I don't have any census record for them. By that time they had (reputedly) 11 children of w hich 10 were alive.
Yancy Galyean is known to me. Yancy descends from the Jacob and Eliz. Arnold Gallion who were in the 1790 Federal census for NC Surry Co. Jacob and Eliz. were married in Harford Co., Md. ca. 1753 and emigrated to Va./NC around 1760-1770. Jacob was born ca. 1733 to Thomas and Mary Young Gallion also of Harford Co., Md who themselves were wed in 1731. Thomas was born 1707 in Harford Co. to John and Mary Wright(?)Gallion. John was born ca. 1670 in Harford Co. to a Joseph Gallion and either Sarah or Alice..his wife. Joseph came to Maryland in 1664 from London, England where he was born ca. 1633 to a William and Joanne Palmer Gallion who themselves were married ca. 1615 in Chigwell, Essex. William was born ca. 1592 to unknown parents in London.

I will have to dig up my records to find out who Yancey's parents were. If I recall Yancy was orphaned due to his father's death in the Civil War...but I'll go find the data and send another note...
George Galyon-redvdub1@aol.com
