I'm not sure if it is my great or great great grandfather, but I have dog tags for Commodore L Gambill. Been trying to find something on the Gambill side of the family since my father Albert Commodore Gambill passed away a few months ago. Could this be the same one? I know he had lots of brothers were Colonel, Sergeant, Major, and I can't remember the rest but they were all named by ranks. Have you found any information on him?

I have found this person in a letter of John S Baisden dated July 1787. The letter has to do with the selling of a ship at Rockets Landing in Richmond, Va. It appears he was a sherriff
or government official. Would like to share the information
doug.baisden@gmail.com

My great Grandfather is Commodore or Commie L Gambill born in Arkansas in 1889. I am looking for any death information on him. I think he lived in Nevada. Or any info on his wife Johanna from Germany. He lived in Chicago in 1930 but I think he left soon after that. He had five children, Eleanor, Ben< Bradley, Pearl, and Bernice.

Bradley Gambill/Gambrell 1796-1860 b.TN d.Ballard Co, KY

Is there anyone with info about my Bradley Gambill Gambrell? I cannot find him anywhere prior to 1850, though it is possible that he has been mixed up with Bradley Kimbro Gambill. My family has always STRESSED that the name is spelled Gambill, my great-aunt Grace even petitioned the Census Bureau to correct the spelling when she discovered they had written "Gamble" on one census. It is apparent I'm a descendent of the Wild West Kentucky Gambills, is there anyone else researching this line?

My Bradley is in the 1850 KY federal census in Marshall County:
Name: Bradley Gambrel
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1798
Birth Place: Tennessee
Gender: Male
Home in 1850: Marshall, Kentucky
Household Members:
Bradley Gambrel 52
Franky Gambrel 61 (female)
John H Gambrel 18
Martin Gambrel 23 (my ancestor)
Malinda Foster 16

U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880 as:
Name: Bradley Gambrell
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Place of Birth: Tennessee
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796
Age: 64
Month of Death: Feb
Place of Death: Picketts, Ballard, Kentucky
Yes, this is the family! I have been trying to verify or fill in any missing info. on the siblings. Can we correspond through rootsweb or can we use our direct e-mail addresses? Mine: cynthiavogel@sbcglobal.net

I am curious about Martin's death date and place; Hargis's death date and place; also Susan, Jesse, and Regina. I ahve some marriage info. Was there a Benjamin and Thomas in this family?

Mary Holbrook's father was Hargis Holbrook? not Henry Hargis Holbrook? I have Mary's full name as Mary Elizabeth, and she may have gone by "Betty."

The Elenor and Jesse Boggs you are searching is in my line, too, and I'll see if I have anything on them -- I didn't have Eleanor's name -- the only spouse I need !

Contact me directly or through rootsweb. and we can compare and share and figure out a way to keep in touch periodically as we search.
Thank you Sharon for your response. Susannah has been
an unknown figure to most of us trying to research her.
I am related to her by her daughter Isabella. Isabella's
father was Thomas, but her mother's name never was clear.
However, Thomas' marriage to Susannah most likey produced
Isabella who later married Elisha Hawkins. Hawkins researchers have been trying to track down Thomas' wives
for a long time. Thanks again!

I am seeking information relating to a Susan Gambill/Gamble?
She was married to a Thomas Roberts, probably around 1811 or so in Wilkes Co. NC. I would guess that Susan might have
been born around 1790 or there abouts, but I don't have a guess as to where Susan was born.

Thomas DID have a child Isabella who was born around 1814 in
Wilkes County. Isabella later married Elisha Hawkins and died in Russell County Virginia. Nothing has ever listed a mother for Isabella. Susan Gambill may have been her mother, then again she might not have been.

Does anyone out there have a connection to her?
Thanks for any help.

I believe I am related to Jesse/ellen Boggs Gambill...and my name is Nancy as well.... If the geneology given to my dad, the late William C. Gambill, Jr., is correct, Jesse//Ellen are my great, great grandparents. I have a history given to my family from a distant cousin of my dad. I have info about Henry and Elizabeth Holbrook's family posted. I did not have the info on Eliz's parents. Thanks! My source shows 10 children born to Henry and Elizabeth: Martin, William, Henry Henderson, John, Susan, Jesse, Ettison, Mary, Hargis, Catherine.

According to a Gambill family history compiled by Beatrice Musette Gambill Saunders(OR)in the early 1980s(who was a "distant" cousin of my dad): Martin Gambill, born 1816 to Henry and Elizabeth(Holbrook)Gambill, married Mahala Lyons in 1837. This particular page's geneological record does not have dates of deaths or place of births/marriage for Martin and Mahala. There are 10 children listed to the union of Henry b.1779(?) and Elizabeth b.1799, Lawerence Co.,Ky: Martin,b.1816; d.?; m.Mahala Lyons 1837. Note: On another page listing inscriptions of headstones from the Old Gambill Cemetery in Martha,Lawrence Co.,KY,- "In memory of Mahala Gambill, was borned Aug the ...1, 1811; died ...."(illegible). William Gambill, b.Oct26,1818; d.Aug1908; m.Jemima ?(b.1820). Henry Henderson Gambill, b.Nov 13,1820; d.?; m.Delphia Lyon,b.Oct 16,1827. John Gambill, b.1826; d.?; m.Rene Boggs. Susan Gambill, b.1830, d.? Jesse Gambill, b.Feb10,1832, d.1897; m.Ellen Boggs,1857. Ettison Gambill, b.1834; d.?; m.Matilda Boggs. Mary Gambill, b.1836; d.?; m. Dr. Levi Sparks,1859. Hargis Gambill, b.?; d.?; m.Cynthia Lyons 1843. Catherine Gambill, b.?; d.?; m.Elijah Boggs, 1844.
Musette notates on the top of this lineage page the name Frona C.(Gambill)Faulkner of Daytona, FL as being the Gr. Gr. Grandaughter of Henry and Elizabeth. She might be the source of contribution of this information. Hope this is helpful in some way.
I cannot find any Thomas or Benjamin Gambill in the mid 1800s, though Benjamin and Thomas Gambill are listed as two of the six sons(one daughter)of Henry and Marie (Mary) Davenport Gambill., Hanover Co., VA. ca.1700s. Court records showed Benjamin Gambill lived in Culpeper Co., VA during the 1760s. Thomas Gambill lived in Culpeper Co. VA in 1776 and was living in Giles County, TN in 1818 (then age ~66), according to his Revolutionary War soldier's record in the National Archives. He was a private for two years in the Continental Line, 3rd regiment under Cpt. John Thorton. Their brother, William (Mary Wash), had a son named Thomas,b.?; d.? There is a record from the North Carolina Marriage Bond Index of Thomas Gambill and Sushey Brewer April 8, 1780 (the date of the bond). Another brother to William, Thomas, and Benjamin named John(Catherine Wash) had a son that was named Benjamin. No other info is noted about this Ben but if he survived to adulthood he could have definitely been alive ~1840. His siblings were born ~ 1770-178?. My personal family line is from Jesse(Ellen Boggs) Gambill, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Holbrook) Gambill. They were my Great, Great Grandparents.

Wm C and Oleta (Lawless) Gambill had three sons: Martin (living); Bill (deceased); and Donald (living). The boys are about three years apart between each.

Wm. C Gambill's family left Kentucky in the early 1900's to settle in Eastern Montana. His father was Martin Nelson Gambill, son of Jesse and Ellen Boggs. His mother was Margaret Sparks. He was single when they left Kentucky. He met and married my grandmother in eastern Montana. My grandmother, Oleta Lawless, was born in Missouri and came out to Montana as a girl with her parents and siblings.

Over the next couple of decades after my grandfather's death, all of this Gambill family ended up in Oregon.

Bill's family (my dad) left Montana shortly after his dad died (1960's), moving with a job opportunity. We lived briefly in OK and many years in TX. My parents moved to OR in late 70's. My brother and I followed them to OR also.

My grandfather apparently went by a couple of different names: Achilles or Chillis. My mother remembers him in his adult life being called Chillis.

For some years now I have been trying to find out who the parents/family is of my 3d gr-grandmother. My 3d gr-grandfather, Larkin Bagwell (1822 SC - 1903 Hopkins Co., TX) married Matilda Ann (1823 SC - 1901 Hopkins Co., TX). We believe she was Matilda Ann Gambrell due to an entry in a family Bible. Several Bagwell researchers and some Gambrell researchers, have never been able to place Matilda in a census prior to 1850. Her and Larkin married about 1843 in ?Greenville, SC. She has not been placed with a Gambrell family prior to 1850 census. There have been researchers on both Bagwell and Gambrell lines who show she was actually a Bagwell and married a Bagwell. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

David Johnson

Re: Susan Gambill/Gamble (I don't know which way to spell it)

I have in my files a Susannah Gambill b. about 1782 who was married to Thomas Roberts. Sorry, I can't answer any of your questions. All I have is a marriage date of December 24, 1811 and the following information:

From the "Wilkes Genealogical Society, Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Winter 1987 Bulletin, Vol. 21, No. 4.
John Gambill, born about 1750, married about 1770, leased 100 acres in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1777. His wife was Caty and he had a son John. In 1778 he assigned the lease to another and moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina. Known children of John and Catherine were John, Jr., William, Benjamin and Henry and at least four daughters. One of whom, probably Sarah Gambill, married Nathaniel Stamper in 1800. John, Jr. born 1773, figures in the Revolutionary War record of his uncle Captain Martin Gambill (Nath's Archives file #W 7504)" Wilkes County, North Carolina. John Gambill, Esq. age 82 resided in Wilkes County the greater part of the Revolutionary War. He lived near neighbor to his Uncle, Martin Gambill." In 1859 John Gambill, Jr. about 83 years old, said that his father John Gambill, Sr, deceased, removed from Culpeper County, Virginia to North Carolina about two or three years before Battle of King's Mountain and that he lived there till his death about 20 years ago." (Also in file #R15508 - Alexander Johnson it is stated: "North Carolina Wilkes County February 3, 1855 appeared before John Gentry J. P. John Gambill, Sarah Stamper, Susannah Roberts residents of Wilkes state that they are children of one John Gambill deceased late of said county and state. John is about 83 years old, born in Culpeper County, Virginia, states his father moved from Culpeper County about the time of the Revolutionary War. He was the oldest child of his parents. That his sister Mrs. Franky Johnson of Ashe County, widow of Alexander Johnson, deceased with her twin sister was the next oldest of the children of his said parents. (Franky's twin was Mary). They said Mrs. Sarah Stamper is about 75 years old and Mrs. Susannah Roberts says she is about 72 years old." (This Pension file of Alexander Johnson was presented in abstract form in an issue of the WGS bulletin in 1976).

Hope this helps you.
No, afraid I can't help you. I have several Mary Gambills in my files, but do not have a William Morton. I am not familiar with any Gambill family members in/from Texas. Our ancestors lived in Kentucky, Ohio, and Oklahoma.
Sharon
