searching for family members

My father was an only child born in Durango, Mexico in 1932. I know very little about his family. All the information I was ever given was that his mothers name was Manuela Gamboa, his father abandoned them and he will not speak of him. He changed his name years before he married my mother, so Gamboa is his mother's maiden name. He didn't take his father's name. They both moved to Juarez Chih., Mexico and when he married my mother they moved to El Paso, Texas. Does this sound familiar to anybody? Any information would be helpful. Thank you!

Re: Gamboa, Italian, Spanish, Pourteggese orgin?

The name Gamboa runs a little deeper than you may realize.
I have been doing a lot of study and this is what I have come up with.

It appears to have come from Mount Gilboa in Israel, where in the Bible Saul had one of his wars.

Thus meaning: Basque: topographic name composed of the elements gain ‘peak’, ‘summit’ + boa ‘rounded’.

In the bible they mention Tarshish which in fact are two places one being Turkey and the other being Spain.
When the Jews had to flee Israel they went to many different places and some fled to Spain. In the story of Jonah and the whale he is going to "Tarshish on a boat West"
first clue and that would mean Spain. As Turkey from Israel no boat is needed and it is North.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Spain

In any case they where sheep herders and and that is how they eventually have been known to be Basque.

In fact if you search the Sephardic Jewish name sights you will see the name Gamboa as a Sephardic Jewish name.

I am also a type b blood type which is the only blood type they can trace and it is traced back to the Himalayas which is in the region.

For some of the people Gilboa was altered to Gamboa when the Jews where forced to leave Spain or convert to Catholicism. From Spain the Gamboa's traveled to many parts of the country and settled in Italy, Guam, Mexico, Portugal and Philippines and so on. They never converted back to Jewish and therefore moved to Catholic influenced countries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sephardic_Jews

I hope this helps.
and Shalom!

Hi Jojo,

There are many Gamboas in Negros Occudental. I am living in the LA area now but I was born there and my mother is a Gamboa. The family we are from a centered in the Silay City/Bacolod area. My mother is one of 9 children and the family is pretty well-known and respected - but most importantly - a good family with good values.

Take care,

Tim Gamboa y Turner

My 90 years old mother and I were talking tonight regarding her paternal roots. I was very inquisitive since I don't know much about my maternal grandfather. She told me that his name was Pedro Gamboa Sr. who was residing in San Carlos, Negros Occidental, Philippines. However his place of origin was Spain. She also told me that she had a brother who was named Pedro Gamboa Jr. and was born in San Carlos, Negros Occidental. My mother however knew Pedro Gamboa Jr. only when they were very young. My Mom's mother took her away so she didn't really grew up with my grandfather, Pedro Gamboa Sr. Somehow I have this crazy feeling that you are related to me. We are currently living in Ontario, Canada.

Hallo, Sara
I am sure that by now you will know the origin of your surname. It is a very ancient BASQUE surname. In fact, it is quire a common Basque surname, but I am proud of it. You must know that the Basque people straddle the Pyrenees and live in the South West corner of France and the North corner of Spain. The Basques in Spain want to be completely separate from Spain. The language is called Euskera and the Basque Country is called Euskadi or Euskalerria. The Basques speak an ancient language which has no connection with any other language in the world. The language is unique, as are the people Both my parents were Basque - my mother was from Navarra (Naparroa in Basque) and my father was from Vizcaya (Biskaia in Basque). I was born in England and live in England. I am very pround to be Basque although, culturally, I am English. I still have all my father's family living in Vizcaya. My mother's brothers and sisters emigrated to Urugay, Argentina and Mexico. Most of the Basque people who went to Central, South and North America were those living on the Spanish side. "Euskera baki zu? means "Do you speak Basque?" It is a fantastic language. Your father must be curious about his surname. Do you know anything about his family? Nice talking to you. Agur (Bye bye in Basque). Hope to hear from you soon. Elena Gamboa
