I have moved your William GAMES to John's birth family. Have you figured out their father's name yet? I see we have some court records very early -- I am thinking our William and John's father would have been born ca 1750.

I see the GAMES researcher Ralph GAMES has many choices for John GAMES, so the hunt goes on. His children listed in his 1808 will are Mitilda Games, Brooken, Pitman and Mourning Johnston. This is a will listed in Will Book 17 p 253 Essex County, VA

Hello, My ancestor William Games who married Sally/Sarah Jones died 1832. According to the census(1820 and 1830) he was born 1770/75. He lived in Essex in 1820 and Middlesex in 1830. I believed they lived in the upper part of Middlesex Co very close to the Essex boarder.
I don't believe this William Games fits as the son of Matilda Johnson and John Games as you have in your chart.
Mary in Alabama

Found Wm Games, on Middlesex Co 1830 Census

Hello Mary in SD,
THANK you so very much. My neighbor tried Ancestry.com and he found nothing. So your finding is GREAT! Now, I'm not sure which female is my Ann C.D. Games who was the first wife of James Chowning but after her parents died 1831/32 she had a gaurdian(per marriage license). She married James Chowning in 1835(Middlesex Co., VA) and nothing said she was not of age to marry. And this Census puts my William Games between 50 and 60. In the 1820 Census he was "45 and up" in Essex next door to Vincent Dyke and Elizabeth Foster. So that would mean(using both these Census)he was born 1770 to 1775. Since the Chowning family was from around Churchview I believe this Games family was from there too. So now who is William Games father? What is the earliest Census? These are the years just before the American Rev War?
Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Mary in Alabama
PS I didn't know you could attach files?
In fact my CLARKSON have land on both sides of the counties.
Hello, A break through!!!! I found William Games on the Essex County, VA Census for 1820. There he is, when they wrote his last name they didn't close the "a" but when I search for Games nothing comes ups nor Gumes or Grimes. BUT I can see how researchers see Grimes. BUT this is GAMES, if you see it you'd say how didn't other know???
Anyway, now I'm trying to figure out the males and females. If you saw Series M33, Roll 137 and pg 51, the second half you'd know what I mean. The original seems to be in order of where they lived. His neighbors names are Elizabeth Foster and Vincent Dyke, Abraham Williamson and Elizabeth Hundly. I don't have access to 1830 but if anyone does maybe if the Games names doesn't show in the translation look farther.

David you raise an interesting question have we linked the Gaines line and the Games, etc. together, perhaps. In this country especially in the south the name is almost always spelled Gaine and even if it is spelled Games it is pronounced the same.
I am some what aware of the Gam, Games story and the theory that Games and Gains are the same family line.
We have had a Games DNA group consisting of 10 individul Games covering six different Games family lines. Before DNA no one even considered their was a connection between any of the different family lines. We now know that all are related to each other and we believe we have proof that John Games 1734 and his four sons is the founding father.
John 1734 so the story goes was born in Scotland and arrived in Maryland, USA sometime prior to the birth of his first child.
DNA has told us our haplogroup is I and our subclade 2b or perhps 2b1.
In our group we have a Games who had history of several generations in Wales his DNA came as R Haplogroup with the subclade being 1b1.
The thinking of those who understand all of this better than I is we come from the northwestern cost of the Europe perhaps in the area of the Baltic Sea.
I have looked at Scotland and found nothing so far.
There is always room for another DNA participant you may be one of ours or perhaps you will open another door to a new group.
Feel free to use my email address gamesri@redshift.com
Ralph

Sarah and Sylvia it seem all of us are chasing the same person and that is where and who are our ancesters?
The Games lines in the US have joined together and through the use of DNA have been sucessful in proving that several previously seperate line are connected and relate back to John Games 1734. Supposedly this John came to this county from Scotland and settled in Maryland.
We are looking for our connection back to Europe maybe you are interesed in working with us?
Take a look at the Games Family on familytreedna
Ralph Games

Mary thank you for your response. Let me say first it appears that your Games family line is part of this John Games 1774 that I have. Do you have any additional family information on the Benjamin Clarkson-Fanny Games marriage such as their children, etc.
There are two problems with DNA testing one being finding individuals agreeing to participate and then the funding. The 12 marker test with familytreedna is 103.00 I would think that should be the first step. It is natural for people to be suspicious of anything they don't understand and that complicates getting volenteers. I was able to get participation in the current on going program because I had a ten year history of working with the individuals who agreed to help. We also had developed a good researched genealogy workup in each of the areas that eventuall proved out to be connected by the DNA.
There is currently a Gaines DNA research group which I made contact with. Their position is we are not related. I have maintained an open mind and untill it is proven one way or the other I believe it is an open question.
I would appreciate hearing from you and others on this issue.
Ralph Games
gamesri@redshift.com

Tina I hope by this time you have resolved all of your questions regarding Herbert. I may have gone over this with you but just in case SS told me herbert was the son of John Games and Emile Bertha Bencion. In the 1930 Cumberland Co. ME. census we find Herbert married to Sabra, age 46 all of her family were from PA. They have a son Lawrence W. age 10 born in PA.
I am still looking for John's father. If you know the day in August 1968 that Herbert died that would be nice to know.
Ralph Games
gamesri@redshift.com

I have a little bit of information that was provided by a member of this family. John Games was born on 04-May-1774 and died 22-May-1834. In 1812 he married Matilda Johnston who was born on 13-Mar-1781.
This marriage resulted in eight children ranging fron 1799 to 1818, 3 males and 5 female.
On 07-Sep-1822 in Essex Co., Va. John married Margaret Taylor and they had another six children 1 male and 5 female from 1823 to 1830.
I will welcome comments on this information.
Ralph Games
gamesri@redshift.com
I am looking for information on John Games born abt. 1734 in Scotland as was his wife Martha. This is according to information provided by their grandson Gideon in 1876. John and Martha would have landed in Maryland before 1757 when their son Robert was born.
Our research group has assembled the genealogy history as well as the DNA which all points toward John Games 1734. Through the DNA process we have been able to unite several large Games family units all in the USA. Our Haplo Group is I1c. My Y-Search identification is SD2CF
I am not sure Scotland is where we should be looking but to-date it looks like our preferred research place.
I will appreciate any help that anyone may be able to provide.
Thank you,
Ralph Games
gamesri@redshift.com
Mary I have a few questions, the first being how do you keep you formatting when you post to this board?
I have Maltilda Johnston. They married in 1812, the record is in Book 041, page 110 Virginia Marriages 1675. Based on that information I thought Johnston was correct.
I have the following dates:
Fanny Games 27-Oct-1799.
Susanna Games 26-Apr-1802, nothing more.
Johnston Games 19-Dec-1805, nothing more.
Sally Games 27-Mar-1808, nothing more, she married William Cauthorn 1834 Book D 45, page 321.
James William Games 01-Dec-1810 born in VA. died 22-May-1862 in VA. Married Louisiana Montague 24-Nov-1836, 10n children, etc.
Mary Games 08-Jun-1813, died 08-Jun-1867, nothing more.
Emily Games 14-Feb-1816, nothing more.
William E. Games, Dr. 07-Sep-1818 VA. died 02-Dec-1870, one child Amanda no wife?
The source for this information was taken from the family records of William Thomas Games b. 30-Jan-1872 in VA. d. 23-Oct-1941.
Please don't think I am disputing your information I am really trying to authenticate what I have. Bill Games died just a few days after I received his records.
His family line runs like this:
Father: John Thomas Games b. 22-Apr-1827, d. 22-Jan-1880. w. Mary Frances Bristow.
Gr Fa: John Games b. 04-May-1774 d. 22-May-1834 w. # 1
Matilda Johnston, # 2 Margaret Taylor.
Ralph
Having spent some time looking at the various posting on the Virginia Board it appears that there is a great deal of confusion about just who or what is the family surname.
The John Games 1774 would be an excellent example of a family line that could provide a DNA sample that would help determine, in our case the Games-Gaines question.
Many of you know of a similar example of a family line that could prove helpful.
DNA when compared with other samples can tell you if you are related it won't point to another person and tell you you are related.
DNA is the only way we are ever going to be able to determine Gaines-Games Family lines in Virginia.
I would be willing to discuss this further with anyone who is a direct male decendant of either line.
Thank you,
Ralph Games
gamesri@redshift.com

Mollyes, Could you share your GAMES chart with me -- my connection is a Fanny GAMES (gggrandmother) -- her parents are John and Matilda JOHNSON GAMES from Essex Co VA.

My greatgrandfather William Johnson CLARKSON was born in Essex or Middlesex Co, moved to Fluvana where his parents died, then in 1850 he and his siblings moved to Lewis Co, VA (which was later WV). I think I will go check to see if any GAMES are in that county during 1850.
I am very interested in this research -- my Fanny GAMES, gggrandmother, is the daughter of a John Games and Matlida Johnson. Fanny was born 27 Oct 1799 according to family history and married to Benjamin CLARKSON 28 Dec 1820 according to Essex County records.
I am not a direct male descendant, but I would be glad to help pay for a DNA test with http://www.familytreedna.com/

Later, Mary in South Dakota

Hi, Marraige notes for John Games and Mitilda Johnston says book O 41 this means "Court Order" book O and that is a date of the record which shows a marriage NOT the date of the marriage. So by 1812 John and Mitilda were married. I have looked at other Court films but haven't seen this one so I don't know what proceedure was going on to list them.

David "Gam" Wales

Hello, I just looked at "A compilation of Gaines Family Data w/ special emphasis on the lineage of William & Isabella Gaines" at the local genealogical library. They had "Early History of the Gaines Famiy in Wales". It stated David-ap-Gwilliam, father of Welsh poetry; Llewellyn the Great Welsh King(1194-1240). David-ap-Llewellyn, known later as David Gam. The name Gam was for two generations, later an "es" was added for Fames and was adhered to in Wales, but inEngland it becamse Ganes, Gaynes and then Gaines. The writing goes on with the Gaines name and how it was pronounced. So did DNA link Games and Gaines?

Hi,
My charts come from Ralph at gamesri@redshift.com. He is also involved in the Games DNA research. My male Games family name stops with William in Middlesex Co., VA who died Jan 1832. In his marriage to Sally(Sarah Jones)20 Dec 1816 he is listed as a widower. Also, Mary Buchholz has a copy of a deed(Deed Book 45 pages 321-323, Essex Co., VA) between Johnson Games and his siblings Fanny Games Clarkson, Susan Games Clarkson, Sally Games Cauthorn, James W. Games, William Games, Mary Games, Emily Games dated 1834. You can find Mary on the Essex Co web site, I believe.
Molly
