I have determined that this grave marker in Parkdale Cemetery, Arlington, TX, belongs to my friends. I have now learned that Albert Walter Gammage, Jr., ,born 1929,died August 29, 2006, in Arlington and was buried in Parkdale Cemetery. His wife, Nettie, is still living in Arlington. They also have one son there. Al came from Florida originally and has no other Gammage relatives in Texas. He had two brothers, also deceased. He was a doctoral graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and had a long and distinguished career as a Southern Baptist missionary and theological professor, first in Taejon, Korea, and then at Bagio, Philippines.

He may well have been depending upon the period being discussed. However, de Gamache was in the UK certainly by 1071 [Gloucestershire] and 1250s or so in Wales. The name progressed through de Gamages, de Gamage, Gamage/Gammage and probably severla other variations.

Would be interested in hearing details of your line, please

iang@grapevine.com.au

Cheers, Ian

I had always heard of a De Gamache that was a French pirate/sailor, William I think was his first name? His name eventually became Gammage through the course of time. My grandmother is a Gammage, this is where I heard this from. She is very interested in our lineage. Her mother's uncle was the Gammage Department store Gammage. My part of the Gammages ended up in south Florida, and I know some of them did get up to Missouri. Not sure about Canada though.

I have Elizabeth Johnson born about 1808 in Jones, Georgia marrying in Jones, Georgia July 8, 1827 to a Thomas William Gamage born May 14, 1808 Wilkes, Georgia who died October 1, 1833. They had 3 children that I could find all born in Jones, Georgia - William Nathaniel 1828, Floyd 1830 and Thomas M. 1832. Thomas William's father and mother were Nathanial Gammage and Delilah Parker. I can't find anything after that for Elizabeth Johnson - Bill Gammage who Ian has notified will definitely be able to help you more. If I do find anything else I'll email you.

Miranda (billyoung@telus.net)

Ian, Hello!
It's been a while. You may remember that we corresponded early in 2003 about this subject.
My grandmother's maiden name was Agnes Edith Gammage, born March 21, 1899 in New York City, New York.
Two generations earlier the family name was GAMAGE. My great grandfather was John Deo Datus Gamage, born about 1868 in England. His father was Deo Datus Gamage and his father was Henry Gamage.
Great granddad John and his brother Tom, changed the spelling to GAMMAGE in about 1881 or 1882 in Arkansas, (USA) after the death of his father Deo Datus.
Last year I spent lots of time on the internet trying to trace family but sort of got away from it. My grandmother only had sisters, no brothers, and all of my Dad's generation, that I am aware of, has passed away. i keep hitting dead ends so to speak.

Sharon

No, I didn't fall of the face of the earth, but I did manage to get realy busy.
I'm not sure what help I can offer to you -- remember -- my family spelled the name GAMAGE in the UK and several years after they arrived here in 1880 they changed the spelling to GAMMAGE. I am having a real hard time finding much about the family here.
Sharon

We'd really like to link as much information as possible. If you'd like, you can also contact me at my email address wgammage(at)sbcglobal(dot)net. Another Gammage has quite a lineage, and we might be able to link you up to those lines. There's also other information we can pass on, and if interested, could be a part of the projects we have going. Hope to hear from you soon.
William L Gammage

Can this be the same person I have been looking for for four years? It might be just plain luck, but I hope so. I'm looking for James H. Smith, b. Mar. 1, 1804 in SC, d. May 30, 1872 and buried in Buckhead, a suburb of Atlanta, at the Harmony Grove Cemetery in a family plot with his second wife and three children (at least). His child by the first marriage was Elizabeth Smith Bullard, b. before 1828 probably in Gwinnette County. I have much information about the Smiths that needs to be confirmed. Can you help me?

Alas, this is the wrong Smith for me. Mine was born Mar 1, 1804 and died March 30, 1872 in Buckhead, near Atlanta, GA, where he is buried. First wife is unknown, but a surviving child by the first marriage is mentioned in the will. Her name is given as Elizabeth Bullard. She was married to a Jas. Bullard and lived in Gwinnette County, Ga., at least for a while. James H. Smith left her 50 acres in Gwinnette Co. in his will, the gift was recorded in Jan 1828 in Book E page 363 in the Office of the Superior Court of Gwinnette Co. She and her husband sold this property two years after her father's death and then just dissappeared.
At the time of Smith's death there were two surviving children by the second wife, Martha W. King Smith. The son died at age 19 but the daughter Sarah Emma Smith lived with her mother until at least 1880 as shown in the census records. I have a marriage license for Sarah E. Smith to James M. Bentley dated 12th March, 1890, (she would have been just 18) but no more info, and no confirmation that this is the correct Sarah E. Smith.

There was a man censused with James H. Smith in 1860 by the name of Jos. Rovang who may have been an employee or a ward. I don't have any other information about him either.

I don't think it is possible that this is the Smith-Gammage connection, but if you have any information on these people, it would be much appreciated

Alas, this is the wrong Smith for me. Mine was born Mar 1, 1804 and died March 30, 1872 in Buckhead, near Atlanta, GA.
Bentley dated 12th March, 1890, (she would have been just 18) but no more info.

There was a man censused with James H. Smith in 1860 by the name of Jos. Rovang who may have been an enployee or a ward. I don't have any other information about him either.

I don't think it is possible that this is the Smith-Gammage connection, but if you have any information on these people, it would be much appreciated.

Hi
I have been reading your message regarding the Gammages in Spratton as I recalled the name very vaguely.

In my mother's family tree (Horn), there was a Henry Horn (d 1749) married to a Mary Horn (d1757 nee unknown, living in Spratton). After Henry died Mary married a "John Gammage of Kettering".

This was discovered by my late uncle when applying for a coat of arms for his family, so unfortunately I cannot verify it personnaly, but the heraldic authorities accepted it.

Don't know if this is of any interest to you or a complete red herring

Regards

Marcus valentine
