Okay, I really appreciate it. I have A. C. Gammill in 1850 census Ouachita Co, AR he was born in Tenn, 30 years old farmer with wife Frances who is 18 years old and born in Alabama, they lived 2 doors away from James age 30 and Milipa 21 y/o Gammill both born in Tenn, listed with children William and Aran? and one other twin of Aran?, all born in Ark. Then in 1860 I found Frances Gambille (/Probably Gammill and misspelled) age is correct listed as 29 born in Ala, with children Miles 9, John 7 , George 6, Archibald 3, all born in Arkansas. Other children listed are Martha Humphries 5 y/o and Abraham Humphries 3 all born in Arkansas. In 1892 I found a marriage record of a previously Frances Gammill marrying a Fred Shellmore June 5, 1892. age 30, but probably not her due to age difference. 1850 there is A (andrew) Gammal(L) listed as paying Taxes on land in Ouachita, and also A. C. Gammall as doing the same.

I have several GAMMILL males with names begining in A. Do you show when and where AC GAMMILL was born? I do not currently have access to Ancestry as I turned of my subscription temporarily. I can see if I have a A. GAMMILL that may fit the description of the one you have.

I believe his mother's name was Frances, and his father to be A C Gammill, not positive yet though. He was born in 1851 Ouachita Co, AR. I have most all of his information, he was married to Anna Benson, or could have been Mullett. Thanks so much for looking I hope this is who he is. I found 1870 census listed with Frances and other children, she was widow. Then on 1860 census listed with AC Gammill.

I think John Anderson Gammill was the son of Miles Gammill. He was born in Iowa. I found the family in the 1870 census undeer the name "Ganide" which apparently was a recording error. See if this fits your search. Per the record Miles was born in 1822 in Tennesse and his wife Delliah was born in 1828 in Ohio. Hope this helps.

Have you done much research in Ouachit Co, AR on the gammill's from there? I am having a difficult time finding much on them there, bridging the gap from 1880 to 1900. I have Miles C Gammill whose wife was Anna Benson. I cannot find any marriage records, I am in the process of writing to see if they have any there. Their chidren were born in late 1890's at Eagle Mills, Ouachita Co, AR. 1900 census they lived with parents in Fort Smith, Seb Co, AR. I know they probably belong with the others who are from there, but I cannot prove anything yet. Miles and Annas children were Frank (Francis Xaviour) born 1894, William George born 1897, Lee Richard born 1899, Annie M. born 1896, married to Clyde Graham , Jimmie C. (daughter) born 1898 ( married to ?Mickel), John Miles Carson Gammill born 1894, Helen Minnie born 1901 married to John W Vesey. 4 boys and 3 girls. Fo any of these people sound familiar? Thanks a lot.
Dianne

Miles Gammill was may Dad's first cousin. Miles mother was Lillian C (Lancaster) Gammill and his father was John Anderson Gamill. Miles was born 17 may 1899 in California and died 25 May 1955 in San Francisco. Does any of this match your research?

Hello, I am trying to find some of my husband's line of Gammill's from Fort Smith, AR. Seb. County. I have them back to Miles C. Gammill in Ouachita County, AR. but can't get any further, I have his children and his wife, but cannot find a marriage for them or much of anything on them. Their children say they were born at Eagle Mills, AR, which is in Ouachita County, AR as well. born in late 1890's. Their mother was Anna Benson. Cannot find much on her either, her parents were James B. Benson and mother Mary. I would love to find out how many different counties in AR, where the Gammill's lived and what census they were on where them came to AR from.

Hello, i just saw your posts on Gammills in Arkansas, I am also researching them, my husbands line of Gammills is from Sebastian County, AR, Fort SMith. I have them back to Ouachita County, but having difficulty pinpointing them before that. Would love to share information with anyone with Gammill's in Arkansas. I know there was a huge clan from Franklin County, AR. and some of their descendants still live here in Fort Smith, Seb Co. Any help would be appreciated. I am interested in the photos you took of tombstones, that is something I would have done as well.
Only a genealogist would think of that! Look forward to hearing from anyone on the Gammill's from Arkansas.
Dianne Minney=Gammill

I hope it's not too late after all the years since you posted this. I'm just getting started in tracing my grandmother Gammill's side of the family. Her name was Dora Mae Gammill Ferguson and was married in Nashville, Arkansas to Claude Bernard Ferguson. I'm assuming that she was born in the same vicinity. Just noticed that you were from the Hope area and thought it was in the same area as Nashville....and that maybe we might have a connection. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
Anne Ferguson Loflin

Hi Helen,

My research indicates that Gannet Carson wife of Andrew Gammill was actually Jennet Carson (misspelled in the marriage record), daughter of William Carson dec'd 1790 Washington TN and Margaret McCord. I've researched these Carson families for some time. That is my line. William and Margaret had children William Jr., David, Robert, Jennet, Mary and John. Moses Carson, a likely uncle, was bondsman since her dad had died already.

Reply if you'd like to compare notes.

Thanks,
Gary Carson

My research indicates that Gannet Carson who married Andrew Gammill in Washington TN was actually Jennet Carson, daughter of William Carson Sr. and Margaret McCord. William died 1790 and mentioned his oldest daughter Jennet who was not yet married. This connects to my Carson line. Their children were:

William Carson Jr.
David
Robert
Jennet (Janet/little Jane)
Mary
John

If you'd like to compare notes, please let me know.
Thanks,
Gary Carson

Hi Cousin,
My line is as follows ,
Benjamin I. Gammill b. abt 1825 Missouri, his son James Wilson Gammill b. Nov 4, 1844 Mississippi, his daughter Miranda Gammill b. Sept 20, 1866 Mississippi ( Miranda is my Great-grandmother. I've not found any thing past Benjamin I. Gammill. I've started a genealogy website at http://www.Myblueangel.net ( in memory of our son Jeff ) that has our family history. I just started this website a few months ago and have tons more to add. I've not put our Gammill family on there yet, but will soon. I do have the Mullins family picture on there with Miranda Gammill & her family. If I come across any info I'll be sure to let you know. Your Cousin: Glenda

Hi Glenda,

Good to hear from a Gammill descendent!

I don't have much more on James Gammill than what I posted in my original message. I am not directly descended from him but suspect that he is related to my ancestors (Chambers & Dugan families). James was the executor of one of their wills, which surprised me, since they had lots of other family members there. I also descend directly from Gillespies, and James was thought to have married a Gillespie.

My direct Chambers ancestor had several sisters that I have not been able to track, so I had wondered if she could be the mother of James.

Which Gammills do you descend from?
I do not know if John Abner Shelton was related to Israel Gammill. According to Gregory Gammill (ggwalrus@aol.com), whose e-mail address doesn't work anymore, Israel Gammill (1788-1878) was the father of George W. Gammill (1831-1908):

***********************************************
Name: ISRAEL GAMMILL
Given Name: ISRAEL
Surname: GAMMILL
Sex: M
Birth: AUGUST 21, 1788
Death: JULY 12, 1878
MARR:

Father: JOHN GAMMILL
Mother: NANCY KILPATRICK

Marriage 1 NANCY SMITH
Married: JANUARY 7, 1810
Children
GEORGE WASHINGTON GAMMILL b: JUNE 12, 1831

*********************

Gregory Gammill does not have a SHELTON in his database that I can tell.

According to the index, the only mention of someone with surname SHELTON in ALLIE ABERNATHY'S SCRAPBOOKS 1893-1923: Mrriages, Deaths and Other Items from Chambers County, Alabama Newspapers, compiled by Laura Alabama Floretta Abernathy, is on p. 104:

"Mrs. Jane Shelton, an aged lady of Chambers county, died at her home near Marcoot last Thursday and was buried at Rock Spring Frieday, Dr. Bledsoe conducting the services. We sympathize with the bereaved" (p. 104). This item appeared about 1900-1901.

I woud like to stay in touch with him regarding these lines.
GAMMILL and McCLAIN in TN to AR

I am researching James Edward McCLAIN (b. 1839) who was married to Elizabeth
Mary GAMMILL (b.1846). I am descended through their son Rufus Loren McCLAIN,
who married a Choctaw woman, Mary Irene CONWAY in Skullyville, Choctaw
Nation, Indian Territory. I have discovered that Elizabeth is a daughter of Moses
and Elizabeth GAMMILL, and that James is a son of Manuel and a wife before the
marriage of Hester N. Are there any cousins or researchers out there who can
confirm these names and lineages that I mention?

Carri in California
