I know its been a while since you posted, but I have come across an Arkansas Gann that doesn't know much about his family. His grandfather was Luther Gann (b. 1908 in AR) and his great-grandfather might be named Nathan. Any help would be appreciated. Email me at mgan9311@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Hi - I was interested in your reply and your cousin who has traced the Gann family back to France. I wrote a book, now available through The Gann Historical Society and Library, that begins with the earliest recording of the name yet found: a Lammekin Ganne who was in Calais, France, in 1276 AD. I,too, believe the family goes back to France, possibly originating in the small village of Gannes which is located about 50 miles north of Paris. I have not, however, been able to prove that definitively. I am also coordinator for the Gann Surname DNA project and while we have been able with DNA to make a link with the Ganns in England, we cannot make a DNA connection with the French Ganns.

As for the Ganns being jewish, it is true that there are many with that name but so far, we haven't been able to establish a link with them through DNA. There are Gann(e)s in many countries.

i have a problem with the name dictionay at the top of the page. it says gann is irish from mcgann. and then it lists from german and other languages forms of gann. my problem is, gann is a jewish name. anyone here in israel will tell you that, it means "garden". there are very many prominent jewish figures from the gann family, why is none of this in here? ask a jew in boston as well. they will tell you this in a heartbeat

I am looking for the marriage of Henry GANN and Martha MYERS who were married abt 1859 in (I think) Webster MO.

Does anyone know about this entry? Was it a mistake or were there two Henry Ganns who married in 1859 in Webster Co. The census of 1860 lists only one Henry GANN and he is married to a Martha.

tom mccabe
san marcos tx

By the way, there was a Martha GANN, born 1836 - dau of Allen GANN - who lived in Hamilton Co TN in 1850. She was not living with Allen GANN in the 1860 census in Webster Co MO where he resided. Is Ann Martha GANN the dau of Allen GANN?

Hi, my Great Grandmother was Martha Jane Gann & she married
Terrell Andrew Vaughn. They are both buried in Guin, Alabama. I've been sort of "stuck" when it comes to her side of the family. Some show that her father was Smith Gann, one of John Steadfast Gann's sons, but ?... I did find a 1860 Census record of Smith's family listed with Smith & Jane with children - Margaret Gann, Joshua Gann, William Gann, and "Mary McGuin, Nancy McGuin, Martha McGuin, Samuel McGuin, and 4 month old- Thos McGuin" . Could this be a transcription error & this Martha McGuin be my GGrandmother? Some previously mentioned a bible with information. Just wondering...
Thanks, Jeanette

Re: William Vineyard Gann son of Adam Alfred Gann

William was my husbands gg-grandfather. His great grand father, George Washington Ford was married to Anna Nevada Gann. I do not have much to share but would love to know more. Is there Native American blood thru the Gann side. He was told by his grandfather they were part Choctaw. Any clues would be helpful.

Re: Gann's in Mo

According to a lettr written by my grandfather Sam Houston Gann in Texas in 1913 prior to his death in which he outlined gann family history, he said that some of the 17 or 18 sons of Nathan Ignatus Gann went to Mo about 1835 or 1836.
