I have a question. If no one knows how exactly how the name changed then how do you know it did. Why can't it just be 2 different names. Asking because I am also researching my Gannon relatives and need to know whether I need to look up both Gannon and Gannan
I have your Aunt Kathleen Gard Gannan's book she did on the Gannan family and had many discussions with her about it.
The name change you refer to happened in the Cutshall family and she said the names went to Cutshall, Gutshall, and Shall. I have found other people in the Cutshall line that have referred to the same story.
I was married to your cousin Robert Oscar Gannan, son of Robert Earl Gannan. I still dabble in this name for my children's sake.
I never heard of any change of spelling in the Gannan name. However, your Uncle Marion always told the story that John Gannan would never let anyone take pictures of him (makes you think of the Amish, doesn't it???) and that he said he was a witch-colt (translation: his mother wasn't married when he was born). Anyone else hear these stories? I have had no luck going back. And I never heard anyone refer to the family being of Irish descent. I know that Marion served in Europe in WWII and said he ran into Gannans that were French descent, but had no idea from his family if there were ties that way--and he loved to ask questions and learn anything! So the impression that I got was that John refused to discuss anything about his family. They even speculated that maybe he was an outlaw and hiding out! (Of course, you have heard the story about the James brothers, Jesse and Frank, witching the well on John's farm??)
Also, the land patent was spelled Gannan, so you would think that maybe John was literate and spelled it for them since it would not be the common spelling of the name???
Heard anything else lately?

Re: Subject of name change from Gannon to Gannan.

I have been hitting a hotbed of information from the census' from the 1800's if you know what area of Ireland your name generated from it's a bit easier. However, Farrel Gannon from Sligo Co. was listed in the different census' as Gannan, Guinnane and some modern updates as Gannon. I really want to see the hand writing because 'a' could look like 'ui' also the 'o' and 'a' are pretty close if you're writing illegibly.

All of this is really irrelevant because the spoken name Gannon derives from the Erris Sept of Mag Fhionnaín likely descendents of the Fir Domnann. The sept was around at the time of Saint Patrick.

Mag Fhionnaín 'Fh' is aspirated I believe, it's more like 'Mag honnann'. So you can see how regional dialects can tweak the prounouciation a bit. Thick country accents and all that. I can't imagine that alot of then could write very well either so if you're looking for the origins or your ancestors best of luck to you. Think outside the box, your ancestors did...

"Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste ná Béarla cliste".

Uilliam Risteárd Mag Fhionnaín

GANNAN/GANNON

Tina,
my great-grandfather was John Gannan, also of Gilman City, Missouri. I have information on his father, William Alfred Gannan (in fact, I have a picture), and his father, John Gannan. At that point, the trail ends for me. I wondered if you were successful in finding additional information beyond this point. The only information I have on my 3ggrandfather John Gannan is that he was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and may have been adopted. This is only a family story, and I haven't been able to substantiate it.
Thanks.
Hi Sandra, please respond to me directly at kbellmer@mail.com. I will send you a copy of the photo via email. We must be cousins of some sort, as John William Gannan, wife Melinda Jane Waterbury, were my great-grandparents. I knew them very well, as he was alive in the 1980's. Melinda Jane passed away in 1974. I have several stories I could tell you about them if you are interested. We used to spend christmas holidays with them when we were kids. Their daughter, Mildred Gannan Robertson, is my grandmother. She is still living, although nearing 90 years old next year. I have many photos of John William Gannan that I could send you copies of. How are you related into the line? I also have copies of Wilfreda and William A. Gannan's death certificates and probably some other stuff as well. My mother, Kay Robertson Stubler, did a lot of genealogy research back in the 1970's.
Karen Bellmer

I am the daughter of Franklin D Gannan Sr. I was also the cousin of yours to care for your father before his untimely death. He wished to get to know you so much. He loved you more than you'll ever know. You were always in his thoughts and prayers.

About the name change I have always been told that somewhere along the lines that a pair of Gannan brothers disagreed about the spelling and that was that. Other than that I don't know either, but will keep looking.

My neice, Tiffiny Knowles, my sister Lucy's daughter, has been studying about our family for along time and has run into a problem going back any farther than John Gannan. I will contact her and see was she knows.

Very good to be in contact with you!!!

Sandy
