Hello - my mother was Margaret Demorest Gano and my grandmother was Agnes Christensen (both women went by "Peggy"). I would love to see pictures of my grandfather - I never met him as he committed suicide before I was born. If you'd like the details of the suicide, I can tell you my father's story as it happened in my parent's home.

Thanks for any information you may have -
Wendy

Kirt March 14, 2012
Thank you so much for the information and the suggestions for further research. I tried to attach the Civil War letters. But Ancestry won’t accept PDF files for attachment to this response. If you would like to send you email address I would be glad to forward them. Several of the letters are complete but I have some pages that don't appear to go together. I have ended my subscription to Ancestry.com for the summer as I spend the summers in the mountains and am away from internet service, so I don’t get to do much work on family history during the summers. Otherwise I would just attach the letter to my tree and you could download them.
I have some information from simple research on-line about Stephen P Gano's military service and the wound he received at the battle of Fair Oaks.
This search has been a complete dead end for me and you have given me some direction. I would very much appreciate copies of the pages you mentioned, even if it is based on speculation.
I spend the summers in the mountains and am away from internet service, so I don’t get to do much work on family history during the summers. If I find any new information I will send it to you.
Posting here may help others with their search but if you would like to contact me directly please feel free to do so.

Thanks again for you help

John Hansberry
3503 E Westchester Dr
Chandler AZ 85249

jhansberry@cox.net
Hi,

I have been looking into the possible parents of Stephen Price Gano. I have no proof, but I believe that Stephen’s parents were William Gano and Jane Price married 17 April 1814. (You can go to www.family search.com and see the marriage record.) Both William and Jane lived in Hunterdon, NJ and this fits with the census record that states that his mother and father were from New Jersey. William’s father was Stephen Gano and Mary’s last name, of course was Price. The census also states that he was born in Nov of 1815. This could have possible made him the first son of William. The name would be fitting for the first boy of the family. This is all speculation. The Gano Ganoe Ganow 1610 – 1790 book by Howard Lemaster does list a Stephen as a son of William but it puts his birth at c.1830, but also states above Williams children that the “order of birth not known.” Also the book has no information about Stephen other than it says that he “went to Ohio.” (If you would like I can send photos of the applicable pages.)

I hope that this at least gives you a starting point. If you haven’t already you might want to contact the Hunterdon Historical Society and/or the Buck County Historical Society for more information. You can find research fee info on their websites.

As for Stephen’s civil war information, your best bet is to submit a research request to the National Archives.
Go to the “Order Reproduction” link and then click on “Military Service and Pension Records”. The fees here vary based on what you want. I have researched several Civil War Veterans using the National Archives and I have had great results. It is well worth the money.

Lastly, I would like to see the letters between Stephen and his wife. If you have transcripts or copies of them please e-mail me or contact me. Although your branch of the family (if William and Jane are Stephen’s parents) is a bit distant from my own it’s still fun to look through.

Let me know what you end up finding. I will keep my eyes open. If I find anything else I will be sure to let you know.

Kurt
Re: Ciela GANO (w/o Henry BAINTER) parent and origin search

Not sure if Lorri is still interested in Celia but I will give it a shot in case someone else is.

I was looking for a possible connecting between Henry E. Gano b about 1824 in OH and my 3g gm Cynthia Hidy nee Gano. (I have a couple of new posts about her.)

Anyway Henry and Cynthia has some interesting connections. But according to what I have seen posted he was not one of her brothers. Here are some ideas on how he might connect to Cella (Celia?):

1850 census p 32, Union, Fayette Co, OH has Henry E. Gano b abt 1824 with Elizabeth Gano & Cyntha A. Gano age 1. They are also living with Cella Gano b abt 1827, Jackson b abt 1844, Phebe b abt 1846, Angelina b 1850 and Cyntha Gano b abt 1791 KY. I think the order of the children has some significance. It is very unusual not to order them oldest to youngest just below the parents. Putting Cella in the middle of the group is confusing. There is a tree in ancestry which claims she married a BAINTER. Then there are Lemaster's comments about her on his p 296 that she is Henry's sister and Angeline and "Anna?" are her daughters - very rare for a woman to have several kids with her maiden name; one I could see, but two? or three? Was Cella married to one of Henry's brothers and Jackson, Phebe and Angelina are her kids? See 1860 census below.

1860 census 58, Union, Fayette Co for Henry E. Gano and fam. New wife Mary Jane? Cynthia and other kids but none of Cella's kids. And where is Jackson - probably the A J Gano living with the JUDY fam next door! So is A J the son of Henry? Or is Cella dead by then and the kids spread to the relatives? Or did she marry a BAINTER?

1870 census 5, Union, Fayette Co, OH has Henry and fam. Census calls them Gaino miss-indexed Gannon. Wife Mary Jane. Child Caroline possibley a niece? No Cella or any of her kids around.

Ray Vick

With Kurt Gano's help I found the marriage record of Samuel Gano and Mariah Mullin, Ross Co, OH 1822. I guess Cynthia's sons were confused about their grandfather's 1st name, or William was Samuel's middle name or maybe William was one of Samuel's brothers who treated them like grandsons. Also there is reportedly an Isaac Gano m Cynthia Mullin Ross Co, 1824.

My cuz Jerry just sent me the death cert of Cynthia Ann Hidy who was born Cynthia Ann Gano in OH 23 Nov 1829. It says her parents were William Gano and Mary Mullen both b OH. Info on the cert provided by family - she was living with son Jeptha and living beside son Nathan at that time.

Confusing that the 1850 to 1900 census has her born OH, IN and VA.

She died Penville, Jay Co, OH 14 Sep 1900.

I still think there is a possible connection to a Samuel Gano of Ohio, possibly Washington CH, Fayette Co, OH where she and Nathan were married and most of their kids were born. Could Samuel's middle name have been William or vise versa?

This should quiet some of the talk that her father was surnamed "Guano". Perhaps that is an indication that the name was pronounced like "gon'- no" rather than "gay'- no" or "gan'- no". But it certainly was NOT Guano which is pronounced "gwa'- no" and means bird excremtent. The "gon-no" or "gan-no" pronouncations are more like the original Ganeau or Ganeaux.

LRAYVICK@cox.net

Looking for info on Ida Jane Gano (Benson)

I am looking for a 3 page record that Ida Jane made for the descendants of James H Gano and Rhoda M. Gano. It is referenced in the Lemaster Book, Gano Family U.S.A, on page 269. LeMaster tells us that the title is "For the Benefit of the Children and Grand-Children of James H. and Rhoda M. Gano". Ida wrote it as a record of the family's move from Ohio to Washington State. LeMaster states in the book that a copy is in the Historical Library in Springfield, Il. (The Springfield Historical Library is now part if the Lincoln Presidential Library.) I contacted the library and one of the libraries genealogist was kind enough to looked though LeMaster materials. It could not be found. I am hoping that a copy is still out there with one of my distant cousins.

Also if you have any information on the family of James after they got to Washington State I would love to hear from you. I have a lot of information too. So if you are looking for or wanting to share resources then drop me a line.

Kurt

Re: Gano apple family of Platte County Missouri
The history of the Gano apple since this name was first applied to it is a matter of definite record, but the source of the original tree of the variety is uncertain. In a manuscript left by the late Charles Downing there appears, under date of February 4, 1884, a statement which was made to him by Mr. W. G. Gano, for whom this variety was named, as follows: "The Missouri Valley Horticultural Society has named the apple 'Gano.' We found it many years ago in an old orchard with many others we can not name. The orchard was set out some 40 years ago by one Eli Jacks. 4 miles north of Parkville, Platte Co., Mo., planting seedling sprouts. These he grafted old varieties into 10 years after. This tree, however, shows no signs of being grafted, so we conclude that it is a seedling. * * *"

It appears that this "Jacks orchard'! was set out in 1844 and came into the possession of Mr. Gano in 1869.'

Concerning the Mr. Jacks who planted this orchard, it is of interest to note that he formerly lived in Kentucky but emigrated to Howard County. Mo., in the early days, later going to Platte County. It is stated s also that older trees of this variety than those in Platte County are (or were) to be found in an orchard which Mr. Jacks planted in Howard County. Here it was known as "Jacks Red." though this name does not appear to have been published and is now practically obsolete.

This traces the history of the Gano apple to Howard County, Mo., but the source from which Mr. Jacks obtained it is still obscure. He may have brought, buds or scions with him from his early home in Kentucky or he might have obtained it elsewhere. According to Mr. Gano 3 this variety was first propagated in 1871 or 1872 after it attracted attention in the orchard near Parkville.

Though planted much less extensively than the Ben Davis, the Gano ranks as one of the important commercial varieties in the Ozark region. A young Gano orchard is shown in Plate V, figure 1.

http://books.google.com/books?pg=RA3-PA33&dq=%22Jacks%22...;
;ct=result&id=U0Y8AAAAYAAJ&output=text
I have stumbled upon a connection! Miss Jane Ellis, whom Jay Gano married, is the sister of my ancestor Morey C. Ellis. The plot in which their mother, Mary Pratt Ellis, is buried in Little Valley, New York, was purchased by Jay Gano. Though it seemed both the Gano family and the Ellis family were from Otsego county, NY, I wasn't sure of what the connection between the families was until reading this. Thank you for posting! Happy to share info at mom22miracles at gmail dot com.

Re: Isaac Gano

I have been reseaching the Isaac Gano that you are referring to for the last couple of years. (I realize that the post is a decade old but hopefully this might help others.) I started with the following book:

HISTORY OF YAKIMA VALLEY page 326
(The book is in the public domain and can be downloaded for free at http://www.archive.org/)

Ira J. Gano, devoting his attention to general farming in Yakima county, was born in Patterson, Hardin county, Ohio, February 6, 1877, a son of James H. and Rhoda M. (Gardner) Gano. The father was a native of Champaign county, Ohio, born December 3, 1837, and was a son of Isaac and Nancy Jane (Hogg) Gano, the former a native of Berkeley county. West Virginia, and the latter of Clark county, Ohio. The Gano family is of French lineage and was established on American soil during early colonial days. The ancestral line is traced back through Isaac Gano to Daniel Gano, who served in the Revolutionary war, enlisting from Virginia. He was a valiant adherent of the cause of the colonies and rendered active aid in the cause of independence. He passed away in Virginia at the age of sixty years. His son Isaac afterward removed to Ohio in young manhood and there spent his remaining days. He was a miller by trade and followed that pursuit in early manhood, while later he took up the occupation of farming.

I then contacted the Berkeley Historical Society. The only Isaac Gano they could find was in the will of Daniel Gano who was married to Margaret (Duckworth most likely). Daniel did not serve in in the Revolution but his father James was in the New Jersey Miltia for a short time. If the book excerpt from above can be trusted then the following is Isaac's lineage:

Isaac, son of
Daniel, son of
James, son of
Isaac, son of
Etienne Gayneau

I believe that your grandmother lillie and my grandmother Belle Agnes were sisters. The info I have is that your grandmother was born in 1903 and mine in 1901. I just found out about my fathers family last year. I don't have alot of information, I'm not even sure what happened to my dad after I was adopted.

Vienna Demorest was the 2nd wife of Dr. James Martin Gano (1842-1895); they married in 1880 and their only child was Walter Jennings Gano (1883-?). Walter married twice. First was Grace Garvin, with whom he had Vienna D. (dob 1910) and Walter Jennings, Jr. (dob 1913). 2nd was Agnes Christensen, with whom he had Margaret (dob 1925) and John (dob 1929).
Which Walter were you referring to? What town do you mean?
If you'll send me an email I will send photos. My sources of info are the Wiki page on Ellen Louise Demorest and a book entitled The Demarest Family (1938) compiled by Mary A. and William H.S. Demarest.

She is the sister of my great grandfather Oren Cecil Givens.

Check out this URL for details, though be cautioned that some of the dates here do not match those I know are correct, always something to watch out for in Internet research:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ingrant/biowhite.htm

A Raymond Gano, who was searching these boards 8-10 years ago for similar information, would also be our third cousin ... he was descended from William Henry Gano's brother Harry Edward Gano as well as Araminta Mildred Givens' sister Della May Givens.

I responded to two of his messages here earlier today.

- John

Re: Gano - Gaineau / Gayneau - Jewish?

Appear to be French Hugeonauts who left when the Edict of Nante was about to be lifted making persecution of protestants in France legal once again. The fact they first lived on Staten Island suggests to me the were on the same ship with the Mercereus and LaTourettes who left France for South Carolina but were blown north by a storm. Jean LaTourette and wife Marie Mecereau lived on Staten Island and in New Jersey. (See the LaTourette House)
