My maternal grandfather was Charles Ganshow whose name was altered during immigration (says my mother). He was born in Brooklyn ~1888 (we have a photograph of him standing next to a cow) to a piano maker who was said to have eloped with the daughter of the burghermeister of the Black Forest before emmigrating to America. He was one of 6 children, but kept contact with only a few (Uncle Bill who never married and Aunt Hildegarde who lived in Brooklyn for most of her life). My mother, Shirley Ganshow b. 1925 (sister Dorothy, brother Robert) has a cousin Charlotte Ganshow who may still be out on Long Island where my mother grew up (Garden City).
