Hi,
I was looking up information on Gasnkows and ended up finding info on Ganschows. I think they might be the same name, just changed spelling throughout the years. If this is the case, I'd love to coordinate further and see if we can dig anything up about the Ganksows/Ganschows. Do you think that the name change is a possibility? Let me know your thoughts and I'll see what I can do.
TigerGirl

Hogan,
This is your Dad's cousin Connie. Sis's daughter. My Mom and Dad are in an assisted living facility in Newport Wa. My family and I moved to a small farm in Elk WA 2 years ago.
I have many fond memories of Bud and Dolores. Delores was such a wonderful lady, so sweet and kind. Bud, like my mother was often a force to be reckoned with, yet so charming. Your Aunt Barbara lived with us for a short time when I was small and our two families lived just blocks apart in Anaheim.

Your Dad was always my favorite cousin. Please send my regards and let him know the whereabouts of my Mom. She adores your Dad.
Please e-mail me at the yahoo address and I will give you my Moms contact info.

Hello Connie,

Our families (Gruschow & Ganschow) are inter-related through the Seyberlich family (now Seyferlich). Warren Seyferlich, who is in this tread for your post, is also a cousin of yours. Your great grand-mother, Frida "Caroline" Elisabeth Seyberlich married Ludwig "Louis" Ganschow on Jan 26, 1875 in Chicago. Her parents are Ferdinand Carl August Seyberlich & Friederike "Frida" Caroline Elisabeth Grüschow (now Gruschow).
Frida Gruschow is my great grand-father's older sister. The Grüschow's came from Moltzow (Rambow Parish), Mecklenburg, Germany. The Seyberlich's came from Waren, Mecklenburg, Germany.
Your g. grand-father Louis Ganschow immigrated to the USA in 1860 from Germany. I do not know exactly where in Germany, but I believe it's also Mecklenburg.
So you see, you have both Ganschow & Gruschow ancestors.
Your g. g. grand-parents (Ferd & Frida Gruschow Seyberlich/Seyferlich) are buried at Wunders Cemetery, Chicago, IL, and I believe the Ganschow's also.
I will try and e-mail you, if your address is still current, if not, please e-mail me.

Ken Gruschow
5609 Polk St.
Hollywood, FL 33021

kengruschow@earthlink.net

Your message is interesting to me because in our family there was a Frederick Ganschow who came over from Germany with a 4-year old son named Herman who was my dad's grandfather. Herman married a woman named Rose, I believe. One of several children they had was named Ernest and the last name was eventually Americanized to "Ganshaw." that is all I have at this point. thanks for the message.

My maternal grandfather was Charles Ganshow whose name was altered during immigration (says my mother). He was born in Brooklyn ~1888 (we have a photograph of him standing next to a cow) to a piano maker who was said to have eloped with the daughter of the burghermeister of the Black Forest before emmigrating to America. He was one of 6 children, but kept contact with only a few (Uncle Bill who never married and Aunt Hildegarde who lived in Brooklyn for most of her life). My mother, Shirley Ganshow b. 1925 (sister Dorothy, brother Robert) has a cousin Charlotte Ganshow who may still be out on Long Island where my mother grew up (Garden City). I would like to find some of my relatives. Please let me know is you have any information? Thanks.

Please help. In July of 1966 I was born to Cecilia Ganshow. I was subsequently adopted by Amos and Betty Sommers. I have absolutely no information on my mother except that she was attending college in the San Diego Area and was living with her grandmother when it was found out that she was pregnant. I am seeking any information on my mother or her family so that I may obtain a medical history and some sort of information to pass onto my children. Any information anyone can give me would be helpful.

Dear Warren,
Thank You for the info. I do believe the stockyards fire was more devastating than what is called The Great Chicago Fire.At least in loss of fire fighters lives.
My grandfather Edward H. Ganschow was the son of Caroline Seyferlich and Charles and Arthur's Nephew. From what I understand he was very close to Uncle Art and was primarily raised by him. Of Edwards children only my mother Helen is alive. George died in 1980, Bobby in 1949, Bud in 1999. My mom is 80 and going strong. They are visiting us currently on our farm in Elk WA. My parents home is in Phoenix AZ.
Connie
PS I have twin boys 6yo. My mother has many stories of your Dad and Uncle. Including what amazing escape artists they were as young boys. How exasperating they were to your poor grandmother. LOL I can relate!

Hi Connie
Charles Seyferlich, my greatgrandfather, ( my dad and older brother are also Charles ) became head of fire department in 1910 when his predecessor and about 11 other firemen where killed at the Stock Yard fire. I've heard that this was the greatest loss of firefighters in U.S. history till 9/11/01. Charles was born in Waren, Germany ( in Germany name was spelled Seyberlich or sometimes Seiberlich ) and came to Chicago as a baby with his parents and grandparents after July 1854. He is buried in Wonders Cemetary at Clark and Irving in Chicago.
His younger brother Arthur was also head of the fire department in later years.
I don't know much about the Chicago Fire but I've run accross newspaper articles about him online. Try a search on google.com. All the Seyferlichs you find will be relitives.
Also try the Library Of Congress web site, they have pictures of Art, Charles and his familey. His son herbert is my grandfather.
Kurt Seyferlich was my first cousin. My dads twin brother William's son born about 1942. I've hear he has passed away.
I knew him well when I was a kid. He lived with my grandmother Clara (nee balow) till he went into the Navy.

Warren

Dear Warren,
I was wondering if you had any info on the Great Chicago Fire. The one where Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over the lantern. Why I'm asking is because I believe your Grandfather Charles Seyferlich was Fire Commisioner of Chicago at the time. I am a homeschooling mom and one of my homeschooling friends is studying the Chicago fire and would like info. Also, sorry about mis-spelling Seyferlich. My mom corrected me. Who is Curt/Kurt Seyferlich my mother is his Godmother.

Hi,

I am Patricia A. Jaimes maiden name Ganschow. Daughter and 5th child of George Edward Ganschow and Mary Alice LaHaie. Neice to Aunt Sis "Helen Chicas" So I believe I am your cousin. I visited Aunt Sis in Spokane several years back when she had located my brother Bob. She has since moved. I believe to Nevada but I am not sure where. Can you tell me how I may contact her? Is Uncle Sam...(your father I think) still alive ? How did you get the name of Johnson if you are Aunt Sis's son ? Was Aunt Sis previously married? I think I remember something dad had said about someone (I'm not sure who) being ex-communicated from the church...was this because Aunt Sis got a divorce and remarried? When I visited with Aunt Sis several years ago I also met Peter and Connie and Connie had two kids I thought and was in the process of getting remarried. Has she had more children? Where do you live? I live in Florida. You may call me if you wish...my number is 727-937-5329 or you may email me your number and I will call you. I am so sorry my parents didn't raise us around our cousins. Aunt Sis left Chicago when I was just a baby so I never really got to know her. Seems the only thing she really remembers about me was that apprently they came to the house to say their good-byes and had a baby with them...maybe you or Peter or Connie I'm not sure who...I was born in 1951 and I must have been 2 or 3 at the time they left but anyway the baby they had with them was crying and I guess from what your mom says I said " Would someone PLEASE give that baby a bottle " I guess the baby was crying and it must have been annoying me....LOL Please remember I myself was only 2 or 3 so I don't remember this at all. I'm sure your mothers recollection is much better than mine !!! LOL

Please respond. I would love to hear from your.

Respectfully,
Patricia A. Jaimes

My mothers maiden name was Ganschow. Here is what I know of that family.
My great-grandparents Louis (I think) and Caroline (Sipherlich) Ganschow came to this country in the late 1800's
They settled in Chicago. They had 13 children, about 1/2 lived to adulthood. The ones I can remember are Louis, Fred, George and Edward (My Grandpa).
I know they had several daughters. One named Gertrude. My grandfather Edward H. Ganschow was a policeman for the city of Chicago. Some of his Uncles
ran Ganschow Tool Dye. Both of my great-grandparents died within months of one another in the mid-1920's. MY mothers family
consisted of George Ganschow now desceased. Edward Francis Ganschow, now desceased. Helen Agnes Ganschow-Chicas still alive and 76yrs old.
Robert Arthur Ganschow desceased. My grandmothers maiden name was Savage. Granpa died in 1972 and grandma in 1974. I miss them terribly,
they were a huge part of my life. Hope this helps.

Dear Don Mayer:
Thank you for answering. I am interested in all Ganschow surnames. Have found afew that I am related to. My great Grandfather settled into Carver Co. MINN the first time then moved to Danvers, ILL. Some children born in Germany and some born in ILL. I believe most of the Ganschows that came to the US were related in someway. We descend from a village near the Dutch boarder in Germany. The village is still there and known for its famous horses. Was under the Russian since WW11 probly not many records left there. Who knows.
I believe that my family came to the US about 1870 to 75. I did find that in someplaces like MINN the census did show a Genschow spelling and can be Ganshaw also or Gantshow, All the same family. Look in Chicago, ILL and you will see another family also some in New York. These days we are in lots of different states. I am please to hear from you. Thank you, Ardene

My great-great grandfather, Wilhelm Ganschow was born 12/24/1834 in Germany, Mecklenburg, I believe. He came to the US and settled in La Porte, Indiana, where he died 11/17/1892. His children were: Mary, Bertha, William, John and Herman. An Americanized spelling of the name is Genschow so you might research that also. We are probably all related somehow but how I don't know!

However I also know there are three Ganschow villages in Germany. I didn't know any had lost their lives in the Holcost durin WW 11. Very interesting. We were told by our parents that we had come from Holland at one time. Not proven yet. Thank you for the information.

My father's father Welhelm Ganschow came from Hamburg, Germany and settled in Staten Island N.Y..He married Gertrude DeBow and had one son, my father. We know nothing about Wilhelm family accept they might have been Jewish shopkeepers. I tried to find out at the Holcust memorial if there were any Ganschows that lost their lives. When I was in Buffalo NY there were 5 Ganschows listed in the directory. I called one family who said they would call when a Ganschow family reunion would be. But never heard from them. I understand there is a Ganschow family reunion every year up there. Hope this little bit can help.

To: Connie Johnson:
Thank you for your reply. Upon arriving in the United States, Christopher and Caroline Ganschow went to Carver Co. Minnesota about 1880. No doubt they had relatives living in that area or close by. We have found one branch of this family but I feel that there are more in this country that are related. There is a village in Germany (what use to be East Germany) named GANSCHOW. Most likely we are all descentant from that village in someway. I alway heard that we also came from Holland and there was a professor found there at a University about 1500. Although the first names of your Ganschow family are used in my fathers family also, I'm not sure at this point if we are related very closly. However I did print out your informaiton and will keep it until I am sure. Please keep in touch.
