I am interested in leaning about the Stretz family. My Grandfather was William Charles Stretz, born in NYC (aprox 1883), his father was Andrew George Stretz and his mother was Marie Apolona Steger from Lohr, Germany. I have less information on the Stretz family and more on the Stegers.

Andrew George Stretz was in John Phillip Sousa's band as was his brother Frank.

I am wondering is Andrew Stretz had brothers that came over from Germany and moved to the midwest. Any information would be appreciated. My email is: azflnj@yahoo.com

Thank you.
Eleanor

I remember Gantners Hardware. I remember John senior and Mrs. Gantner very well. The Store got bigger over the years and had alot more than just hardware and paint. We lived on Prospect St. and would very often walk down to the corner of Franklin Ave and Ravine Pl. I remember John Jr. he went to school with my aunt. His sister's name was Mary and was married to Joe Grille. Mr. Gantner had the first Volkawagen that I ever saw and that was about 1950. My grandfather was a surveyor and surveyed the property up in Sussex that the Gantners bought and finally built a house there.

I traced my Gantner line to Wolfurt, Austria, and then hit a dead end. I think some branches of the Gantner family were in Eglisau, Switzerland. Nicholas was in the Civil War, correct? Bernhardt and his in-laws, the Scheibels, were in Minnesota and they fought in the "Indian Wars" and for the Union during the Civil War. How far back did you get, with Nicholas?

There is a vast forest of Gantners. We just need to find the correct tree.

My family came from Prussia (Germany) around the 1830s (Nicholas & Anna). They had six children and settled in Rushville, IN.

Do these names match your family tree? If so, write back. If not, I wish you luck.

I was putting info down for Ignaz Diringer and mistakenly put it on the Gantner side. If you note, they come up with the same birthdate, etc., so I'm sure it comes from my mistake. I don't know how to delete that info. Hope you can find the correct info. It's a brickwall for me. Good luck, Jennifer

Dear Gantners,

My name is Orsolya Gantner and I live in Hungary.
My father is László Gantner and my uncle is Károly Gantner.
My grandfather, who already deceased, was called Károly Gantner, born in Arad in 1899. Arad was part of Hungary then and after the I. World War was given to Romania, along with large territories of Hungary. And this was when my grandfather escaped from Romania and came to Hungary. He had, if my informations are correct, one brother named Béla Gantner and a sister named Mária (or Mariska, as she was called here) Gantner, they both emigrated to the US (possibly to NY) about the same time, when my grandfather came to Hungary. He may have had more sisters and brothers, but these are the only ones I know about.
If anyone has any information on this family, please send me an email, I would love to know about the rest of the family and perhaps organize a reunion.

Love: Orsi (this is the nickname of Orsolya in Hungarian)
You will enjoy Boonville, it is a beautiful old Missouri river town (although admittedly, not a hot spot). And of course, it is where our ancestors came to from Germany / France.

Be sure to visit the Sts. Peter and Paul cemetery, it is where most of our ancestors are buried. Also the Andrew Gantner house, which is on the national register of historic places.

Jim Thoma is a valuable resource. I wouldn't have made nearly the progress I have made without his websites.

Thank you so much for the link- I love finding new avenues to our families! My cousin Julie and I are planning a trip to Boonville in the spring and we are both so excited to get there and "relive" the Boonville experience our ancestors had. I have had contact with Jim Thoma last summer- he is in charge of the Cooper County, Missouri webpage through GenWeb and has a wonderful variety there of things to look through. I didn't know if you were aware of that already....Please keep in touch- Jodi

I have quite a bit of information on the Boonville Missouri Gantners, including some information on Diringer, Stretz, and Garthoffner. Andrew was my great-great-grandfather as well.

I would particularly be interested in any information on Margaret Gantner, Andrew's sister, who married George Stretz. Or on their father, supposedly named Ignaz Gantner, who I believe stayed in Baden.

Link to my tree:
http://www.genealogy.com/users/g/a/n/George-Gantner/

I also recommend Jim Thoma's excellent website, with amazing numbers of Boonville residents:
http://www.thomafamily.org/

My cousin Julie went to her local library and asked them to get the books for her through inter library loan- since they are no longer available to be purchased. She said they were hard to follow and that the names jumped around a lot- not all of the information was correct either. We were interested in the Diringer, Stretz, and Gantner names since they connect into our trees. Please drop me a line if you have any more questions about them- I can always email my cousin Julie who was able to view them a couple of months ago.

Gantner lines

Hello, I am new to researching my family tree and only have a little bit of information which my father has given me. How reliable it is, I do not know.

I have heard that I am related to a line of Gantners who opened up both a Funeral Home as well as a Wet Suit company over in California. Supposedly there were two Gantner brothers who immigrated to America and their descendant split up. My grandfather, who's name I actually cannot recall, was supposedly a "black sheep" for he did not go into the family business but decided to join the American Navy.

Any and all information would be appreciated.

I was trying to get info on the Smiths, My great grandfather was John Smith, brother to Nellie Smith, which i think was your great grandmother? I have never been able to find him on any census after 1880, John Smith, i know he died when my grandmother, Ethel Pearl Smith Tarrant, was about 14, but i have nothing on him, just wondered if you have any info on him at all.
I'm in yet another related branch of the Gantner's in the St. Louis Missouri area. Andrew was my great great grandfather. His son Louis J. was my great grandfather. Louis had eight children, including my Grandfather, George. My eldest son is George E. Gantner IV. I have seven children, ranging in age from 21 down to 5.

I'm just starting to get into the genealogy thing. I visited Boonville briefly last summer and saw my great grandparents' graves. Rest assured, there are many Gantner's carrying on the line in and around St. Louis.
