"The fact that the descendants of the first Gilbert de Gant were residents and rulers of Lincolnshire... gives credence to the THEORY that Peter Gaunt of Lincoln and family are descendants of royalty from Ghent. Due to primogeniture, the younger members of the family were not heirs; and in the 400 years from Gilbert de Gant to Thomas Gaunt of Lincoln, all royal connections could dissipate as, unfortunately, would the genealogical record.
... John of Gaunt's family lived in Lincoln also. John died in 1399, about four or five generations before Thomas Gaunt, Peter's father."
I know that most USA Gantt's go back to either John (Virgina) or Peter (Mass). The John and Thomas mentioned above could go generations back. I've read somewhere of Flanders as a source of origin. What I just quoted comes from a book by Mary Chalfant Ormsbee, Published Boulder, Colorado in 1983. Title is GAUNT-GANTT FAMILY Some of the descendants of Peter Gaunt of Sandwich, Massachusetts.
