Mollie Mae Spraggins Gant/Gantt

Hi. I'm looking for the names of birth parents for Mollie Mae Spraggins (B: 1892, D: 1933) and her sister Jane (B:1888). They were both adopted by John Howard (B:1846 TN) and his wife Anna (B: 1836 TN.). They are shown on the 1900 U S Census living in DeKalb County, AL. There was also a brother but I don't have a name for him or any information on where he went when his sister's were adopted. I did receive a birth certificate for Mollie Mae Spraggins and it said that she was born in Slackland, Cherokee County, Alabama, but her parents were listed as unknown. Mollie was my great-grandmother. She married Columbus (Lum) Gant. I can be contacted at mauldinfamily1@yahoo.com Any information would be appreciated.
Debra

Stubbs Gant(t) and other African-American Gantts of South Carolina and Georgia

Hello,

I am a direct descendant of Stubbs Gant, b. 1864. He married S. Jane Mitchell and had several children: Ila, Pearl, Reubin, Rufus, Resey or Reesy, Sidney, and Mazie/Mazaree/Missouri Gant. Some of these children may or may not have added a "T" at the end of Gant. Most of these children moved to New York City and Philadelphia in the 30's and 40's.

For this family, I am seeking any and all descendants. I am very interested in knowing who Stubbs parents were. It seems he was born in Georgia, but I know they originated in South Carolina, which is just a few miles or across the Ogeechee River which was close to where Stubbs was in Screven County, Georgia.

There are three women named Gant who are buried in Screven County: Lucy Gant, Ellen Gant, and Elease Gant. Elease may have been a child of Stubbs and S. Jane. Not sure how they are connected, but pretty certain they are.

Also, the Gants were related to the following families by marriage and/or blood: Mitchell, Lockhart, Young, Hendrix, Dunbar, Rouse.

Please message back or write if you can help. Thank you!

I also descend from Gantt's in Philadelphia, PA, who spelled it as "Gant" sometimes. My Gant's were the children of Stubs Gant and S. Jane Mitchell of Halcyondale, Screven County, Georgia. but they too were from South Carolina. I spoke with a Mr. Henderson in Philly who knew much about Barnwell County, SC descendants, knew of Gant's, and said he thought they had all died, as many did before the great migration to the North. Many of my Gant's ended up in New York and then Philadelphia. I also descend from the Rouse's, another family from the Barnwell County, SC area. My Gant's were in Screven County, GA by 1860's. They were also related to the Young's and married the Lockhart's and Mitchell's. Looking for more Gant's!!!!

Hello,
I am a descendent of Alvin Gantt of Philadelphia. Alvin was a Philadlphia police officer and at some point became a detective and then was removed from the police force and established his own detective agency.

I am his oldest child, and he had a total of five children with my mother. He divorced my mother and his children and remarried. His second wife is Asian and they had two children. The family use to reside in an area called Yorktown. There were seventeen siblings and not twenty-three. His Miami, Wagener family were very close.

Martina Gantt Porter

I saw your msg on the Gantt's from Alabama. My name is Nelindra Ann Corum and I am a Gantt descendant. Your line is one of my branches. I am especially interested in your Cary Gantt. My father name was Cary Judson Kelly. He has passed as has the rest of his family, but I am really interested in the first name of Cary. His grandparents were a combination of a Dunlap, and Mary Etta Gantt. She was the d/o John Gantt of Elmore County. I have tried for years to figure out where the name of Cary for my father originated. I know it did not come from the Kellys (were German) nor the Dunlaps, so the Gantt surname is where I have been looking. Do you know who the original Cary Gantt was? Have you every heard anything about where the name Carey/Cary came from?

I hope you don't mind, but I was looking at your Gantt tree on Ancestry and I have something that is different from your information: The Mary L. E. Dunlap who married the W. Gantt is one of mine. Her father was John Gant. Your line is from JOhn's brother, one Isaac Gantt as follows:

There was a Rev Isaac Moody Sewell who was a descendant from Isaac Gantt (one of the original bunch who came to Alabama, ca1840/ca1850). He did a very thorough job of documenting the Isaac Gantt line. His document is 25 pages long using a very old typewriter. Here is what he has on your line.

Page 19: Gan. Three (3)
Chas L.
Hello I am Paul Gantt. The Judge Richard Gantt is my 4th great grandfather. The Gantt family cemetery is located on Brown Rd in Gantt, SC. If you get to 1331 White Horse Rd. This is the Gantt district Fire Department. They could help you. Or you can go to mapquest and get the directions from there. I hope this helps. I can find it if I was up there myself. Again I hope this helps.

Paul Gantt

Hello Christy Kennedy. I am William Paul Gantt. I go by Paul. Yes, there is a district called Gantt, SC on the border of Greenville and Anderson county. The Gantt family cemetery is were my Fourth Great Grandparents, the Honorable Richard Gantt, and Sarah Gantt, and one 4th Great Aunt Susanna Matilda Gantt. There is a report of two other family members buried there as well. We have done some serious work on the family cemetery. It was covered in weeds and brush. It has been cleared. We do have plans to keep working on it and get the wall redone and put a gate on the front of the cemetery. I look forward to hearing from you.
Paul Gantt

Ok for all my Gantt friends around the board and the one's I meet helping on the Judge's cemetery cleanup; here's something I found tonight. I knew that the Judge had previously been in Edgefield county before Greenville; but I didn't know this was in my back yard where I grew up in Abbeville until now. Hope you enjoy. Make sure you read the names for ownership of this property.

http://south-carolina-plantations.com/edgefield/evergreen.ht...

Paul. My wife and I take care of the Willis Benson Cemetery on White Horse Road. It is in good shape [gate is unlocked]. This is the cemetery where we restored the rock wall around the graves. My wife is descended from 2 of Willis Benson's daughters.
The Benson-Vaughn Cemetery is across the street and beside the Gantt Fire Station does need mowed and trimmed. This cemetery has a combination lock on the gate. Call me at 864-845-6749 and I will give you the combination. Last year I helped a Mr. Thomas mow it a couple of time. I also would be glad to help. bob.

I am called Paul. My father Spencer, cousins Nick, Ben, Debbie, Millie, Brouse, and I met up one day back in May and cleared out all that brush. We do have plans to make another trip up there in the fall.

Paul Gantt

Schultz who died very young. Ruby was a widow by 1930 according to a census report. She had one son, Frank Lewis Schultz. No information has yet been found regarding husband Joseph.

I live about 3 miles from the Gantt Cemetery. Last year the property owner in front of the cemetery had a back hoe clear the trees and brush from around the rock wall. I went by there [4/27/2011] and someone had cleared all the brush from inside the rock wall. The rock wall around the graves is in pretty bad shape. My wife and I take care of the Willis Benson Cemetery on White Horse Road about 3 miles from the Gantt Cemetery. Last year we restored the rock wall in the Benson Cemetery.
If anyone would like photos of the Gantt Cemetery [cleaned] let me know.
Bob in Piedmont SC

Susan,

If I remember correctly you are a descendant of Thomas John Gantt (1795-1860). I am a descendant of his brother William Johnson Gantt(1800-1895). Have you seen the portriat of Thomas John Gantt that is in the possession of the descendants of his first child, Thomas Wilding Gantt, by his first wife, Eliza Fell? There also exists three portriats of Judge Richard Gantt. I am in possession of one of them. Another is in the hands of a descendants of Richard Allen Gantt (1797-1874)and the last is a terrible copy of the this portrait hanging in the Edgefield County Court House in Edgefield, SC.

If you have a copy of the portriat of Thomas John Gantt, I would be interested in getting a copy if you wouldn't mind.

Thank you,

William Thomas Gantt

Hello I found you on the message board from your posting in 2004. David Cecil Gantt was also my gg-grandfather. Ada Gantt his daughter was my great-grandmother. She is listed on the 1880 census as S.A. Gantt. Have you found any more information?

Re: Will of Judge Richard Gantt (1767-1850) of S.C.

Richard Gantt's wife, Sarah, daughter of Sherwood Allen and Mary Cargill, died in 1848 and his daughter Sarah married a Mr. Stone of Spartenburg.

Richard Gantt is a descendant of the immigrant Thomas Gaunt of Maryland. If I remember correctly the Gantt family from Lexington, S.C. are descendants of either the immigrant Peter Gaunt of MA. or the immigrant John Gant of NC.

I hope this information helps.

I hope someone is still on this thread! I am related to Gauntt/Gantts from this area. My 3rd GGM, Hannah Gauntt married Clement Jackson. I am particularly interested in Sarah Gantt who was mother of Clement Jackson and also Jacob Kelly Gantt, Draton Gantt and some others (I am going from memory right now). Story is that she was married to Israel Gantt. I am trying to find the original source for that info. The Peter Gantt book lists her maiden name as Sarah Howard but again, now source. There is a Sarah Gantt living with Jacob Gantt in Alabama in 1850 thought to be this Sarah, but she has a 40 y/o MR son living with her surnamed Howard which makes it seem more likely she was previously married to a Howard. Also, there is a will filed by Sarah Gantt in Lexington County, SC in 1858 (seems odd that she would file her will there although she is living in Alabama). There is a Sarah Gantt, 70 y/o in the 1860 census of Lexington County. Does anyone know who she is? Questions, questions. Looking for answers or at least a thought provoking discussion.
Paul M. Hendricks, MD
