Hi, I have the following communication from an Antonio Gaona: "Yes My grandfather (Bernabe Gaona) was an uncle to Rodolfo Gaona. I have not much more information other than Bernabe Gaona did have the Circo Gaona that he started and is now by cousins circus in Mexico.

I would have to ask my father whose name is also Bernabe Gaona what he remembers."

The bullfighter was Rodolfo Gaona and he was from Leon, Guanajuato. If you google him you will find tons of information about his career as a bullfighter. Family history, however, is not nearly as easy to find.

Hi my name is Teresa. My mother is Felipa Gaona born to Rosendo and Maria Gaona on May, 26 1937. They lived in Texas and moved to California in 1947. Manuel and Virginia Gaona were the parents of my grandfather and Candido and Candida were the parents of my grandmother. My mother was one of 8 children...Benito, Blanca, Elva, Beatrice, Rene, Amador, Manuel and of course my mother....not all in that order. If anyone knows has any information that would help in finding more of our relatives it would be much appreciated. One more thing, my grandfather was a widower and his first wife passed away. Please email me at teresadavison68@yahoo.com

My name is Sergio Gaona Ortega I was born in Morelia Michuacan Mexico. Growing up I thought the last name came from natives in mexico btu I saw that it comes from north of spain. The family last name ends with me and my sister. I have seen alot of gaona recently on facebook. Besides that all I can do is just research the family in Michuacan and see the rest of the history from the city records.

Hi Saul,

I am also having the same trouble, I have only met two people with the last name Gaona in my family, however I have met several family members with the last name Gauna. Most of my family came from Cadereyta, Nuevo Leon. I don't know if this may help, but my cousin told me when my Great Uncle immigrated to the US the person who processed his papers mispelled his last name GAUNA, so thats why half my family is Gaona and the other half Gauna.

Blake

I can't locate my family form the past because the names were misspelled. We're from south Texas which is about 125 miles from Houston, Texas. Good Luck!!!!

I was born and raised in Southern California, my full name is Saul Gaona Jr.. Both of my parents were born in southern California as well, my fathers parents (Mardoqueo Gaona & Elpidia Gaona) are from Jalisco Guadalajara, Mexico. The surname Gaona is such a unique name, that out of these 21 years of my life I've only met one other kid growing up who shared the same last name as me. His name was Alejandro Gaona and we both grew up in Paramount, California. My father is the only son from my grandparents, and I have younger brother (Samuel Gaona). In my family tree of Gaona men my Brother and I are the only two left to carry on our last name.

Re: Gaona Info

Hi all, My name is David and i go to college in Dallas. Ive been doing research on this for a while but recently dug up more info.

The Gaona's are in fact from Spain. Northern Spain appears most likely. And was once of nobility either by marriage or by family growth. It would also appear the American version immigrated around that time, whenever that was. This took place circa 120 to 180 years ago . There are not exact details as the family did not appear to be large despite any possibly wealth.
The time spent in Mexico appears to be short before migration to Texas. I've dug around personally and there is definite uncertainty as to the amount of the family who migrated from Mexico and who the majority of them were. With that being said if you have any info on the migration to Texas and else where after arrival from Spain this could potentially help several people.

The possible Jewish origin of the name is very debatable and I've been able to find very little information on such. Other than whats been said here. Which may have more to do with pronunciation than actual practice of Judaism or decent.

The Gaona's of Texas and the eastern coast of Mexico appear to be of the most direct decent I was able to find.

Any Southern American or other continental Gaona's appear to be fairly separated from the Eastern Mexico/ Original family.

Guyona,Gayona,Girona are not of this particular family.I've found little to no information on any of them, Or relation.

Girona is a city in Northeastern Spain. I have not been able to find any name sake similarities with this Region and the Texas/Eastern Mexico Gaona's.

The Majority of direct decedents today reside in the Southwest and Mainly Texas.

As for the family crest there is a prominent one found at http://www.houseofnames.com/gaona-coat-of-arms

I have been unable to verify its authenticity in several request with the company. And suspect it was created in recent times. The site goes on to claim the Gaonas migrated to Peru originally. A claim i personally doubt and have found no information on, other than possible decedents living or have resided in Peru.

If anyone has any information on its creation i would be very interested. The family name appears to be young and appears to be much more prominent in the US than elsewhere. I now assume this to be the modern family crest and take it as such.

I hope this helps anyone looking for info . This family name is not common! If you reside in Texas ,Parts of the Southwest , Southern California .. or Northern Spain we are very likely to be related.

My family's last name is Gaona through my mothers side of the family. We know very little regarding our Great-grandfather, except that he or his father came from Spain. With the owner of the hacienda in Javier Mina Durango. My grandfathers name was Adrian Gaona, we have but one photo of him and he is wearing traditonal Gachupin clothing which was of a wealthy man at the time. If you don't mind me asking, what part of Durango were your relatives in at that time? My mother was born there at around that time, and there was a lot of Gaona relatives at that time. I believe as far south to Mexico City.

Re: Gaona Family coat of arms ?

The associated coat of arms for this name are recorded in J.B Rietstaps Armorial General. Illustrated by V & H.V Rolland's. This Monumental work took 23 years to complete and 85,000 coats of Arms are included in this work. Registered in Biscaye. This surname of GAONA was applied to a Jewish scholar and communal leader. The GEONIM were the heads of the Jewish Babylonian academies from the 6th to 11th centuries. Much of their surviving work is in the form of 'Responsa' replies to questions on the Bible. The most celebrated of the name was SA'ADYA (892-942), Talmud scholar, philosopher, poet, grammarian and the translator of the Bible into Arabic. Between 1880 and 1914, almost three million Jews left Eastern Europe, representing the most extensive migration in Jewish history since the expulsion of Jews from Spain at the end of the 15th century. Most of the emigrants fled from Russia, where pogroms had raged, and where the laws of Czar Alexander III had oppressed Jewish life. Most of the emigrants departed from Hamburg and went to the United States, but some emigrated to Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and South Africa. While the vast majority of the immigrants to America came through Ellis Island from 1907 to 1914 thousands of East European Jews participated in a little known episode in American Jewish history. They migrated through the port of Galveston, Texas and then were routed to towns throughout the Midwest where lodging and jobs awaited them. In the Middle Ages heraldry came into use as a practical matter. It originated in the devices used to distinguish the armoured warriors in tournament and war, and was also placed on seals as marks of identity. As far as records show, true heraldry began in the middle of the 12th century, and appeared almost simultaneously in several countries of Western Europe.
Really! WOW that is awsome, you know what go me into this whole finding of GAONA was my own name PEREZ. I was born out of wedlock and took my mothers Median name last name Perez because my Biological father was not around to have taken his. His last name was Ramirez. However, because my mother was separated from her real husband, who's last name she took and gave to all my siblings I wanted to know how GAONA became involved if by faith with the Perez Last. Spains' richest man (Amancio Ortega Gaona) married Flora Pérez Marcote who gave him a daughter named Marta Ortega Perez now to be known as the heiress of this billion Dollar fortune. So I am wondering, if their is a link why Perez and Gaona link in several occasions in life.

My Family came from Laguna gloria Los Lidios, En La Parroquia de San Isidro, Villa de Artiaga, Coahila. That's South of Saltillo. My Grandfather and Grandmother Doroteo & Rafaela Ganoa, are registerd on line 117 page 46, of the 1st. book of Marrages dated 1873. there are a lots of Gaona' in the same book and the area, The Prist said, Toda La Gaonera lives en Los Lidios.

As for the "Gauna" my mother said that in the early 1900 a COUSIN, went to work in San Marcos, TX. and to this day 2003
(I have spoken to them)they have gone to visit the Family
in mexico and are told to Correct thier name. So that, COUSIN became "Gauna" because that's how the Grigo, pronounce it. If you ask a Gauna, He/She has family around San Marcos, Texas.
