Well, well. Jeanne Coniglio----or as she was known in days of old "the Conigs". Your brother Andrew was more infamously referred to as "Mildew". He hated the nickname but it brought a smile to everyone else's face.

I spoke with Guido this morning and felt the lift through the phone line. Needless to say, you were one of the more interesting attractions growing up.

If you have any questions, all of the family members have great memories of the area and your family. We all occasionally return to the nest. Stay in touch

Billy G

Thank you for responding. I also lived in country club, across the street from the Garbarino family. Was a friend of Guido, and my brother Andy was friends with Richard. The Walsh family were lovely neighbors as well were the Alfenito's (Dr. and Mrs.) My condolences for your parents. My Dad enjoyed your Grandfather, Mr Taylor, since both of them were in construction. My Dad built our home, and saw it not too long ago with many changes!! Remember your sister Mary, lovely and always smiling. Thank you again for the memory. Jean
The Garbarino family consisted of Guido and Mary Taylor Garbarino and their eight children. Guido and Mary married in 1939 and lived in the Country Club area of the Bronx until they passed in:1990 (Guido) and 1991 (Mary). The children in order of birth were: Jane, Jim (deceased in May 2008), Jack, Guido, Robert, Richard, Billy, Tom. The children are dispersed throughout the country now with Jane being the only child still living in Country Club. As a matter of information, Jane lives in the house constructed by her mother Mary's father (James B. Taylor) in the mid-1920s.

The Walsh family lived next door to the Taylors, having bought their piece of property on the same day that Jim Taylor purchased his lot. Mr. Walsh, I believe his name was Joe, and his wife Emma lived in the house at 1466 Dwight Place until Joe was killed on a construction job in Manhattan. The New York Bricklayer community sold chance books on a Tiffany watch that retired the debt on that house.

Frank Walsh went off to WWII and returned to marry his sweetheart Mary. I think she was a Barrett. There were a number of untimely deaths in their family. They parented six children: Frank, Jr. (deceased), Johnny, Joey, Mary Joan, Thomas (deceased) and Steven (deceased). Joey is a retired NYC Police Officer and Mary Joan is married to another Country Club native, Peter Sebastian. Johnny moved to Florida. Frank, Sr. died about 15? years ago and Mary just passed a few months ago.

Are you referring to the neighborhood of Pelham Bay?
My grandfather James Taylor built a house on Dwight Place in 1923. I believe the Walsh family lived next door. Directly behind the house on Dwight Place lived JBT's daughter and her husband Guido Garbarino. They had one daughter and seven sons. After James Taylor's death in 1957, the Garbarinos rennovated the house on Dwight Place and moved in with their 8 children.
Please reply to me at pmosier@kennesaw.edu with questions and more details of your project.
P Taylor

Hi- I'm attaching an old newspaper clipping from my Great Grandmothers passing. In it you will see the names Garbarino & Dondero. I don't know if they are related somehow to who you are looking for but how often do these two names come together? This clipping is from Wanaque (used to be Midvale), New Jersey, dated 1961.
My great grandfather, Siro Macchiavello, came from Genova & my great grandmother, Emelia Mapello, came from the Milan area.
Have a great day & happy hunting.

I was just checking for Garbarino and saw your message. My Great Grandfather was Guiseppe garbarino, born in Genoa, Italy I believe in 1836. I think he came to America about 1854 and settled in St. Louis. His wife's name was Caroline, but I don't know her middle name. He died Dec. 12, 1872. If you have any information, would you please let me know. He was also an original member of the Italian Fratellanza in St. Louis. Thanks, Lee Anne Koehler akoehL2@aol.com

hello I just started this stuff. Both my father and mother were Garbarini's supposedly no relation (so I always wondered why I have 3 arms !) My father was 2nd generation youngest of 8 born in 1912 in Hoboken N.J. alot of Garbarinis in Hoboken and Jersey city at the time. His father was from the town of Garbarini in the mountains east of Genoa. He said that there were Garbarinis on one side of the road and Garbarinos on the other. The town was supposedly a half dozen bars and a few churches. Actually I have a very old colorized picture of the town in the distance but just moved so don't know where it is at this time.

My grandmother was born a Garbarino, her father an emigré from near Genoa. I was told to search for Trebegno, but it seems the proper name is Tribogna. I am also told to trace this ancestry through an Andrew J. Garbarino and his father, a Matthew Garbarino. My assumption is that I'm looking for Andrea and Matteo. I wonder if this Garbarino family from Tribogna could be another branch of the one you're tracing.

Hi, We are related! Theresa Sanquinette Ruby was August N Sanquinette's Aunt. He lived with her in 1910, so August N. would have known my grandmother, Theresa Ruby Reiley. The Sanguinette's were a close family and visited each other quite often. I have information on the Sanguinette family but nothing on the Garbarino's so your information is helpful. Louis Sanguinette, August B.'s brother, married Mary Garbarino, who I believe is Mary Catherine Garbarino's sister. All these "Mary's" gets confusing.

If you would like to exchange information, you can e-mail me at djprice@centurytel.net.

Hello,
I've been following the posts of this line, and noticed that your say your grandmother was born in CT (Connecticut?), USA. If Connecticut, I wonder if you know the city/town. I am a Dondero/Cuneo descendant whose ancestors originated in Moconesi. The names Garbarino, Cuneo, deFerrari, Dondero, Musante, as well as others are all prominent names in this small commune. I am attempting (very slowly!) to gather as many individuals/descendants that I can. I have found that almost all individuals with these names can trace back to the Genoa area and many of them intermarried for generations even here in the US. I would be interested in learning more about your possible connection to CT, as well as the Genoa area.
Noreen, greatX2 granddaughter of GianBattista Dondero and his wife Teresa Cuneo, b. Moconesi, immigrated to NYC @1870.

This is a long shot on a coincidence of names, but maybe it will come in handy at some point in your research. I am researching the family of a Giovanni B. Garbarino (born 1864) who married Rose Corsiglia (1868-1961). They were both born in Italy presumably around Genova, both reported to have immigrated to Canada in 1888 and settled there. I am trying to find out if this Garbarino family is related to my Cuneo family (Francesco, 1877-1930) from Moconesi.

Best of luck!

Hi Jeannie:

It's been a long time since I last wrote to you. I stopped doing my family search for awhile, but I am back on the trail. I am still searching for my grandmother's family. To refresh your memory, my grandmother was Antonio or Antoinette Garbarino. Her parents were Joseph and Rosa (Cavagnaro) Garbarino. On my mother's baptism certificate, it listed Rosa Garbarino (Cavagnaro) as Madrina and (T or L) Loglia or Toglia Pietro as Padrino. You had indicated sometime ago that you were going back to Italy and I believe it was the Barbageleta (Genoa) area. If you went, did you find out anything new?

My e-mail is bocz2@aol.com. I would appreciate hearing from you even if it is a negative response. Thanks
Barbara

I was reviewing the Garbarino message board and came across your message re your going over to Barbagelata to further research the Garbarino name. Have your found anything new. My message on the message board is dated 17 March 2001 11:25 am. My grandmother was Antonio or Antoinette Garbarino (married name Franceschina) and her parents were Joseph and Rosa Cavagnaro Garbarino. My mother's baptism certificate listed Rosa Garbarino as Madrina and T or L (there was some writing over this) Loglia Pietro as Padrino. Did your search uncover any of the above names? I am not sure of the exact place of birth, as my Mom always said her people were from Genoa. Thanks for any information you may be able to provide. Barbara

Re: Garbarini Garbarino connection?

There are l5,000 Garbarino in Italy and only 800 Garbarini,
according to family historian Giuseppe Garbarino of Einstein Ave.in Bologna. He says further that the -i spelling has been
a result of mistakes, quarrels and other problems.
The town in the hills of northern Italy with the family name is east of Genoa and it is spelled Garbarino.
I got into this business when I tried to track down my great-grandfather, first name unknown, who came to the U.S. with his brother from Genoa. One took the name Garbarino and the other agreed to take the -i version. The one named Garbarino settled near Medina, NY, and became a farmer; the other came to Detroit. I know nothing more about the one who came to Detroit, except that he had a son named John Dominic (my grandfather) and he had a son named Raymond (my father). To make this more confusing, my father, Ray, changed the spelling of his name to Garbarino
because of a disagreement with his father, but not until after I was born, so my birthname is Garbarini. Additionally, my hot-tempered father never permited me to see or talk with my grandfather. [Anyone may contact me through my daughter Beckie Simmons at the E-mail address above, or me directly at l800 N. College Rd., Mason, MI. 48854]

Garbarino-Sanguinette - St. Louis/Colorado

I have been researching my Sanguinette Family and have started down the Garbarino branch of our family tree.

My ggg-grandfather was Pietro Sanguinette from Genoa, Italy. His two sons, Louis and August B. married Garbarino girls. Louis married Mary Garbarino (1845-1904) around 1865 in St. Louis, MO. They later moved to Colorado. August married Mary Catherina (Kate) Garbarino (1853-1894) on 18 Apr 1870 in St. Louis. This side of the family remained in St. Louis.

Does anyone know if Mary and Mary Catherina were sisters? If so, do you know their parents? I will be glad to share what information I do have on their children.

As a sidebar, Pietro's wife, Rosa Canepa, married a Stephen Castagnino after his death in 1853. If anyone has information on Stephan, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.

Hey Steven, its Georgia Garbarino Biller! Remember me? We corresponded a loooog time ago. We connected through Elinor Svihla. I am using a friends Ancestry account and was just messing around and found a old message from you. Are you still doing research on the Garbarino family? I am still trying to find family. I have reason to believe that the Coccia Institute in Florence, the ones that I paid to do my research, got it wrong, so I'm still searching. Contact me if you want to. Put Garbarino in the "subject" so I won't delete you before reading. Thank you, Georgia
Repetto2@aol.com

Some of the other cousins and I have been trying to bring Anne Taylor Marshall's 1897 family tree "Samuel Taylor and his Descendants" up to date.

We are looking for anyone who may be related to the Garbarino/ Garbarini family through the above listed families. These individuals would be descendants of Nicholas Garbarini and Epiphinie Chretien Garbarini. Nicholas came from Italy with a brother named James (my great-great grandfather), James' wife, Mary, and a sister who may have been named Rosina who married a man and lived in Tennessee. Nicholas and James both served in the CSA during the War Between the States. Nicholas was taken prisoner at Vicksburg. Nicholas died in 1895 and his wife and children were supposed to have left for California. At least one of his children, a daughter named Theresa, married in Louisiana. She married Gabriel Lacaze and at least one of her children, possibly two, were born in Louisiana before moving west. One of their children was named Gabriel and he may have passed away early last year. Theresa may have died in in the late 1940's. If any of this story sounds familiar please e-mail me (Carl Garbarino) at Carldg@cox.net. Your family in Louisiana would love to hear from you.
Carl

Re: Garbarini Garbarino connection?

Nicole,
I am a Garbarino from Louisiana. My great-great grandfather and his wife, James and Mary, came from around Genoa and settled near present day Elton, Louisiana sometime just before the War Between the States. His brother, Nicholas, and a sister, possibly named either Rose or Kate, also made the trip with them. The sister married and settled in Tennessee. Nothing else is known of her by our family except that she had at least two children. Nicholas would marry a young lady from the Elton area named Epiphinie Chretien and they would move to St Martinville where they raised at least 10 children. I know that Nicholas died in 1895 and sometime after 1900 and maybe as late as 1910 his surviving family would leave Louisiana and settle in Los Angeles. I have a copy of his succession of property dated from 1919 that was filed by his family in Los Angeles and acted upon in St Martin Parish. There are also several other items of interest located in the St Martin Parish Courthouse that concern Nicholas Garbarini.
As mentioned earlier Nicholas and James were brothers, but what I found interesting is that James spelled his name Garbarino while Nicholas spelled his as Garbarini. Of further note I have found that some of Nicholass' children would use either surname.
James Garbarino had five children: John (My great-grandfather), Rosina, Nicholas, Catherine, and Theresa. All were born around Elton between the years 1863 through 1878 and are buried in Liberty Cemetary just west of Elton.
Nicholas had as I wrote earlier children: David, Theresa (Married a man named Gabriel Lacaze from St Martinville-I have a copy of their marriage liscense), Elisabeth, Alexander Cesar, Francois Nicholas, Marie, Marie Nathalie, Marie Italie, Giovanni, and I believe there was at least one more daughter although the name escapes me now.
If any of this information is useful to you please let me know as the Garbarino family in Louisiana has long tried to locate those that left for California.
Thank you,
Carl Garbarino
Carldg@cox.nt
David Garbarino WWII Army Airborne Paratrooper

Hi. I am looking for him or his family. (He would have been born probably between 1908 and 1926)

He was in the Army Airborne during WW2. He at one time served with the 17th Airborne Division/139th Engineer Battalion. He might have been attached to or detached from this Battalion or possibly transferred to the 101st or the 82nd Airborne when the 17th was disbanded in 1945. He would have been in the Engineer Battalion, HQ & S or medical.

I am in the process of writing a book about the Battalion and would like to have him contact me. If he is no longer with us, I'd like the family to touch base with me to give me a summary of his life since the service. This also will be in the book.

I have also succeeded in getting these WW2 Heros to touch base again with their comrades after not seeing each other for almost 60 years. Their reunions have been wonderful.

This project is so important because 17 million personnel files were destroyed in the 1973 file in St. Louis MO. I want to make sure that these men will never be forgotten and will be put in the history books for generations to come!

Thank you for all leads to help me on this tribute to our WW2 Heros.

Sincerely,
Tammy Paynter
tpaynter@centurytel.net

PHOTOS: Lida GARBARINO Miles Family Boulder, CO

I recently bought two photos that seem to go together. They are identified as Lida GARBARINO Miles and family and Leslie and brother Miles with Robert and Carl PLEUS.

I see from the 1900 Census that Lida is the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth Garbarino. She married a Leslie MILES. The children on the family picture look like girls, but at that time children were dressed differently.

I am not related, but I would like to connect these two photos with family members or family researchers. They are too good to be lost! Please contact me directly if you have an interest in these pictures.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Kathy@craftsbykathy.com
