Hello,
My name is Quincy John Lowry. Son of Dale Garbutt-Lowry of Belize and grandson of Fredrick Garbutt of Belize. I was taught in my family history that John Garbutt from Scotland was a sailor and that he was a founding father of Plascencia Peninsula in the 1800's.

Hey Eryka,

I think we have some of the same Garbutt's in our trees. The last one I found is John Garbutt 1750-1824 married to ester wilks. Not sure if we are looking for the same line. My family was from lincolnshire England and I think Yorkshire England.

Hello, I recently discovered that my grandfather was a Garbutt. His name was Henry Arthur Garbutt but as an adult changed his last name to Deacon. His mother's name was Emily Anderson Deacon. She was married to a sea captain named Edwin Deacon. My grandfather also had two sisters (Muriel and Winnifred) whose last names were Garbutt but changed their names to Deacon after immigrating to the U.S. I believe their father may be one of the Garbutt men you listed in your message. Don't know if you would have any info about descendants of John or Joseph Garbutt. If so, I would greatly appreciate you sharing.

My stepdad name is Radford Lincoln Morey and so is my brother. His mother's name was Stella Garbutt. As far as I know she had a sister Adele Garbutt, brothers Percy,Oliver,Oswald,Hilton and Crispin Garbutt all from Monkey River, Belize. They tend to name their children after other members in their family so you will find a repetion of names i.e. Oliver, Ernest, Oswald, Hilton,John,Lindsay. The majority of Garbutts are from Monkey River. I will post some more history on this name soon.

Researching Garbutt line from Essa Twp, Simcoe County, Ontario, and later East Whitby, Ontario. My husband is a direct descendant of Ann Garbutt, born about 1861-65, Essa Twp., and died on June 1, 1888 a few days after giving birth to her third child in Brooklin, Ontario (East Whitby). She had married Albert Burton Cook, and they had three children, Ida Elizabeth, Frances Fanny and Albert James (our link is Albert). The 1871 Canadian census shows an Ann Garbutt in Essa Twp.; her father is listed as John Garbutt from England and mother, Elizabeth from Ireland (Elizabeth Cotter).

We purchased an antique sidebord here in Florida for our Bed & Breakfast 5 years ago. We have discovered that it was owned by the Garbutt family of Wheatland, Monroe County, New York. When we were cleaning out the drawers we found an old bill of sale from an estate sale in 1934. The old paperwork said that this sideboard came out of the original family estate (1850's) of John Garbutt and his son Philip Garbutt of Garbuttsville, near Wheatland, Monroe County, NY. We have since sold our Bed & Breakfast. We would like to see this sideboard (and provenance) go to a family member or descendant as we do not have the space for this beautiful piece of furniture. We have placed it into storage at this time. It is in great condition. Would be a shame to send it to an antiques dealer. Steve Sika Clearwater, Florida

Hello, I"m wondering if anyone has information on Blanche Garbutt. Daughter of Frederick William Garbutt and Mary Ann Belham. I've been told she was married 7 times, but also told she was married twice. She lived in Florida during the two marriages that I know about. I am trying to find out if she ever had any children.
I know she married Richard Sterling Trantham in 1931, and married Andrew Colquitt Thompson in 1949. It's quite likely that her children are still alive, and that is why I cannot find any of them. I have a very interesting story about Blanche, and if there are any living relatives.. please email me, ASAP!! janenegreer@hotmail.com
The good news is Garbutt is not a common name. My guess is he was the son Frank Garbutt and Helen Fitzgerald. The 1940 census will be available in 65 days. So you will be able to tell for sure. The social secutity death index gives his exact date of birth and lists his death as September 1975. I have a lot of info on the Garbutt's who were the caretakers og Greenwood cemetary at one time. The family lived in Borough Park Brooklyn for a long time. My great grandmother Carrie for whom my mother was named was a Garbutt

I just realized my last message sounds a bit cryptic. I didn't mean for it to be like that. I am related to John (Jack) Garbutt's other children. I remember him well and I expect we have photos somewhere. Anyway, let me know if you want to communicate further.

Hello Kath,

I am very pleased to hear from you! Yes, this definitely gives me more to go on. As I said previously, Robert is a bit of a mystery. I haven't been able to get beyond him in his branch of my family tree, as all my family who might have known anything have since passed away.

If my Robert was, indeed, a son of your great, great grandfather, William Garbutt, by his first wife, Sarah, then perhaps it was assumed Robert died at sea, when in actuality he had left ship along route. He would have been young (likely about 18), and no doubt a bit impetuous and adventurous. Chatham, New Brunswick, was a small but busy lumber exporting port in Robert's day. Some shipbuilding was carried on there, as well.

Whatever the reason, Robert decided to make the general area his home. He married Amelia Davidson in 1845 and settled a few miles south of Chatham. Robert ("Bob") and Amelia had several children, all girls but one, my great grandfather, William. One of Robert's daughters was named Sarah, which may have merely been a coincidence.

I don't have any photos of Robert, but I have a photo of William, likely taken around the turn of the last century. If you're interested in seeing it in case there may be some resemblance to your family, let me know. I remember my mother saying that William was tall (over 6 feet) and well built.

Thanks again, Kath! It would be great if I finally found Robert's family. Of course, I'll have to do more research. I know that the surname was changed in Canada, likely from Garbutt.

Regards,

Joyce

Hi,

Its been quite a while since I've looked at this branch but its possible that your Robert is Robert Garbutt son of William Garbutt (b1799 at Garmondsway Moor) and Sarah Sedgewick (b1801 Brancepeth, Durham).

According to my notes this Robert was born about 1823 in Wingate, Durham and was baptised 29/06/1823 at St Helens, Kelloe, Durham. He was the 2nd of 4 sons born to William & Sarah who married 17/02/1822 at St Helens, Kelloe, Sarah died in Feb 1834 at an infirmary in or around Newcastle.

I would have to check (my source notes are badly out of date) but I have only one other note against Robert's name and that was that he died during an accident at sea during his first voyage, I suspect this was provided by another researcher but I can't say for certain right now.

This would appear to be prior to 1841 as his three brothers Thomas (1821) William (1824) and John (1828) all appear at Garden St., South Shields during the 1841 census as does their father William and his new wife Jane Train (my Gt Gt Grandparents).

None of the 4 brothers from William's first marriage appear to have been born in South Shields based on their baptism and early census records but both William & John claimed birth in South Shields on later census returns so I would put it down to an assumption on their part based on where they lived as children.

Hope that helps

Kath

I have no idea, as yet, if I am descended from the same Garbutt family; however, for what it's worth: My great, great grandfather was named Robert Gorbett, born sometime in the early 1820's in England. On my great grandfather's (William Gorbett, only son of Robert) marriage record, he states that his father was born in South Shields, Scotland. I've checked, and I can't find a South Shields in Scotland, so I'm assuming my great grandfather meant Durham. Robert Gorbett left England, likely in the early 1840's, and settled in the province of New Brunswick, Canada, near Chatham. He married in 1845. Info about Robert is very sketchy. My mother once said there was a belief among certain family members that Robert, as a young man, jumped ship in Chatham with another crew member. I have also heard that the surname may have originally been Garbutt. Is there a Robert Garbutt in your family tree from the South Shields area who was born in the 1820's?

Hello Terri! Person who's name I have always known and who's face I have never seen! I was in contact with your brother a number of years ago, 2005 to be exact. Sent him pictures of your Dad. They came to me after Muriel died in 2004 and I started a search. Figured your family would want them. I hope he made copies - George as a little boy, with his Mom and sisters and also with his Aunt Mae and Uncle Walter, the people who looked after him after his mother died until his sister Muriel was old enough to be allowed to have him back. I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer you. I haven't been on the site in awhile and it took me some time to find my password. You can contact me, if you would like, at phaedra285@hotmail.com

The situation is somewhat complicated, and I don't really have very much information to go on. I know that he passed away Sept or Oct of 1975, but that is all. I dont know what cemetary he was buried in, or whether he was buried, cremated, etc. I have what I believe are the names of John 'Jackie' Garbutt's other children, his spouse (who is not my mother), a few other sketchy details. John Garbutt is my biological father, which he acknowledged to me personally. Other than that, there is little that I know. I believe he served in the USMC, I know that he taught Judo at the Staten Island YMCA along with a man named Hyman Passin who told me what he knew of my father before he also passed away (I studied Judo under my father for a number of years, which my sole contact with him). I know that his best friend was named Roy Wilson, who lived in the Berry Homes in Dongan Hills, in Staten Island, and I know that my father may have been employed by Wells Fargo or the NY Dept of Sanitation, or both.. and that he died of Leukemia. He moved out of 20 Cliff St in July of 1975, on the very day we were moving in (we passed one another all day), and he passed away that October. That is pretty much everything I have to work on. I don't want to disrupt anybody's life or insinuate myself into anything.. I am simply hoping to trace my ancestry back as far as I am able on my dad's side.. and just sort of get a sense of what my roots are. I would love to obtain a photo of my dad, any sort of photo.. and particularly one in which he is wearing his Judo-Gi, if such a thing exists. That is pretty much my entire interest. If any of his family can piece this together and wish to contact me, I would welcome that, but I wont intrude or interfere with them in any way on my own. I am grateful for your kind reply, and will try to see if there is any sort of connection between my father and your family.

I have Garbutts in my family tree. Great Great Great grandfather was James Garbutt born 1n 1805 in New York and his wife Ann born New York 1806. They were the only Garbutt family in New York City in the 1850 census. The name was spelled wrong (Gorbat I believe) in that census and has been misspeeled a few times. Their son Charles and his wife Anna had a daughter named Carrie who married Cornelius Simonson. They had a son Cornelius who married Eugenia Van Dyke. Their daughter Carrie was my mother.

If your family was here in the 1850's you are probably decended from James and Ann. What cemetery is your family buried in?

Greetings, I am looking for any information concerning Garbutts from Staten Island, NY - particularly a John C.(?) Garbutt, b. 31 March 1936~d. Sep 1975. He was a Judo player, and possibly worked for either Wells Fargo, or the NYC Sanitation Dept, or both. He may also have served in the USMC. The information that I have is limited, and I would greatly appreciate any and all information concerning him, his ancestors, siblings, or anything else. I am just beginning to research this lineage, and he is my starting point... and so far, it is looking grim. Thanx! ~Bear.

If that's true, then I'm pretty sure he's my Great Grandfather who was married around 1918 in Texas. We know they moved to Tulsa at some point and separated/divorced from my Great Grandmother either there or in Kansas City. He ended up in California where he died in '77. We're desperately looking for his parents names if you know anything. Thanks.

I have no documentation, as such, but a strong enough "suspicion" to have started a separate tree for the Harts. Muriel is listed on her birth certificate as illegitimate - no father acknowledged. Interestingly, her mother, Mabel's birth date was also changed, on Muriel's cert., from Sept to June to make her 16 before Muriel was born. Make's me wonder if there were legal ramifications at the time that made the family want to "fudge" the fact.

I have not found any info on Thelma's birth, yet but know she was born while Mabel and Morgan were still married.
