Gard family in Wood Co., Virginia

I have a Drusilla C. Gard, b. 12 Aug 1842 in VA, d. 12 May 1924 in WV, married James A. Farson(s) ca 1865. I found Drusilla listed with her mother, Kesiah, in the 1860 Wood Co., Virginia census, along with siblings Minerva, Elizath (sp), Jeremiah, and "Emerella" {sic}. I'm trying to figure out what happened to Kesiah by 1860. I believe I've found Drusilla in 1860 living with the John Prince family, and Jeremiah is living with the Jacob Flowers family. I cannot find the other sibs in 1860, nor do I have any idea who Kesiah was married to, who appears to have died prior to 1850. Anyone out there researching this branch of the Gard family?

I was so interested when I read your message, my surname is Geard and we know that our name was changed from Gard or Garde even Tillygarde but it really is De la Garde and they came from France 1500's . Time has gone by since you wrote your message but it is so interesting, we where told by the family since we where small that a Murder was comitted and some of the family changed their name, each group taking a differant way of spelling it but it all sounds the same.
My line moved from Yeovil Sommerset up into Oldham, Manchester around mid 1800's but I keep hitting a brick wall, as our name was changed many times I think.
Would be interested to keep intouch and compare tree.
Brenda Geard-Utton Canada

Greetings!
I happen to be in WI, too. I found that my great grandmother's maternal grandfather, Thomas Hawkings in Devonport,Devon married Elizabeth Gard Sleeman. I have not yet found how the middle name ties in with the SLEEMAN Family but SLEEMAN is a Cornish name with a great number of ways to spell it! Somewhere in her family was the name GARD.
Does anyone know of any connection between these two families? I also have the name VENTON on this side of my family and they moved between Cornwall and Devon much like the SLEEMAN family did.

My name is Cheryl (Gard) Causey and I am Margaret Gard's oldest grand-daughter by her oldest son John Henry Gard III; I am one of the six grandchildren mentioned this obit. I just found this site and I wanted to thank the person who wrote this for my Gramma Gard. I was born in Laconia, NH, but only lived there with for 3 yrs before moving with my parents to CA. After that I rarely saw my grandparents but at a young age I began writing letters to my Gramma and we kept regular correspondence thoughout the years. The last letter my Gramma received from me was in a Mother's Day card I sent to her the Sunday before she passed away on May 16, 2002. It comforts me to know that she read my letter and knew that I loved her before she died. I miss my Gramma Gard.

Dear Sharon,

The John Richards Garde in my research was bapt. on 15.5.1825 at Sanloi, St Buryan, Cornwall, England. He was the second son of Anthony Garde and Mary Richards.

It was through Message Boards that I came to the conclusion that he had gone to the USA, as did a couple of other family members.

His next brother, Anthony Garde, with his wife, Mary Jane, nee Ralph, also appear to have gone to the USA.

A younger brother was Thomas Garde who had married in 1860 Catherine Lott Treloar in Perranuthnoe, Cornwall, by whom he had 4 children, before Thomas died in 1871 in Goldsithney, Cornwall. The other brother was Francis Courtis Garde, who married Thomas' widow, Catherine, and they had three children, the first being born in Wisconsin in 1874.

While I am unable to provide details apart from the 1880 US Federal census, I do have information from Cornwall, England.

Hope this is a help to you.

Deirdre Blunt

Deirdre,
I believe that I have found Anthony (Guard) in the US on the 1880 census in PA. He came to WI with his wife Mary Jane, daus Mary Anna and Caroline. He is a miner in 1880 with 2 sons one of whom was born in WI, the other in PA. Do not know if you can view the census, but I was quite happy to track the family who move to NY and NJ.
Deirdre,
Anthony was most likely dead by 1900. Mary Jane and "Annie" whom I assume is Mary Ann, Frank with his wife and Fred with his wife are all in Wilkesbarre City, PA. Frank lists his birth place as PA, but it is of little consequence since I am 99.9% sure that all of those people are family, namely mine (no matter how distant). I went on then to search for them in 1920 and 1930 census and it is Fred and Frank who end up in NY and NJ. Do you have access to those census records? Rosella

Shar,
My ggg grandfather was John R. Gard, I am descended through his second son, John who married Fanny Jose. I found Elizabeth-55 and James Buckett-56 along with James-25, Elizabeth-20 and Samuel age 10 on the Mountaineer which embarked from Penzance and landed 3 Oct 1849. Elizabeth married John Gard. There is a John Girard (also a crease in the paper), and I believe this is John Gard )Guard, Garde and a couple of other spellings on the census. By the 1850 census John and Elizabeth have their first son James who is 1 mo 8/22/1850-must have married 9-10/1849, so must have know each other in Eng., also living with Bucketts in Iowa Co, along with Ann Fox who I believe to be a sister to Elizabeth. Attended a Gard reunion in Iowa Co. WI this past summer, did not see John R. Gard's headstone, but it is still there. Who is your husband descended through since J. Gard had children with 2 wives? Hope to hear from your soon. Rosella in Wisconsin

Hi, We are researching information on our victorian home in Colorado Springs and ran across your email requesting info on Sarah A. Gard. Our home was originally built by Florence L. (Gard) Rossbach. We have some information on Sarah Gard, Florence (Gard) Rossbach, Louis F. Rossbach,. We also have pictures of their gravesites here in Colorado Springs. We are very willing to share our information if you are still looking for information on them. Your email was interesting plus gave us some answers to questions we had too. We show Florence was born in Storlinghusk, Africa. We can not find any information on Storkinghusk, Africa (map or otherwise) or if that is even the correct name of her birthplace. Please email us or call us if you're still working on this project.
Hi Mike, is it possible that Robert Gard is the son of Thomas Gard and Ann who marry in Swell in 1720's. It seems there children are registered in Newhaven Sussex. A Robert in 1747. No marriage found in Newhaven for Robert.
