I think it is just a case of putting two people togather and the idea of stephen gardiner being married and having children just circulated through family trees on the internet.

I recently received a book copy of stephen's gardiners letters and nowhere does he mention a family, and even in his will he lacks to mention a wife and kids.

I read James Muller's "Stephen Gardiner and the Tudor Reaction" some years ago and got the impression that Gardiner, as a Catholic, was strongly opposed the clergy marrying. I think he assisted in the reformation to keep his head attached to his shoulders but remained a Catholic at heart. I doubt that he married.

I have recently set up a DNA surname site on Ancestry.com for GARDINER. My husband who has a family history in England and Ireland back at least to 1800 has been tested at the Y-47 level. I am hoping to find other males with the Gardiner surname who are also willing to be tested.
Stephen Gardiner---documentation

Stephen Gardiner, who was the bishop of winchester during the reformation, is supposed to have been married to Margaret Grey and had a son George and German. (This is what various modern sources on internet say)....however, I have looked at the book of Stephen Gardiner's letters (quite a large book) and there is no mention of a wife or children at all.

Furthermore, amongst the records of Gonville and Caius College, which was where George and German Gardiner attended...German's college record says he was "of Berwick on tweed. Son of Cuthbert Gardiner, gent. Age 21"

This makes me highly question whether Stephen Gardiner was indeed the father of George and German. I also have doubts whether Margaret Grey married Gardiner.

I would like to hear what other people think of the matter or if anyone has any documentation to add. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Kyle

Hello,
I have several Gardiners in my tree who were blacksmiths in that area of Perthshire. Daniel Gardiner (c1801-?) was a blacksmith in Wolfhill, he married an Isabella Craig, they had at least 5 children. Two of them, Charles and Daniel again were both blacksmiths in Wolfhill. Daniel junior (1830-1893) married a Mary Morton, they had ten children. Their son Charles Gardiner (1864-1941) was my great grandfather.

I knew of Irene because my mother has always claimed we are Gardiner's, but I couldn't find the link thru Iren's father. So many thanks. The story is that the Gardiner son married a maid at the estate. I now know that's Warren and Mary C.
Info on black Gardiners in Nova Scotia

I am looking for any info on the Gardiner family from Nova Scotia, Canada. I know there was a Sarah or Charlotte Carter who married a Mr. Gardiner in Nova Scotia. Three of their children were William H., Anna/Annie and George E. George E. was born in 1860 and was my ggrandfather. The historian at the Black Cultural Centre in Dartmouth told me Mr. Gardiner may have emigrated from Barbados. He is one of my brick walls, so ANY info would be appreciated.

I am very curious about Ester Ann Tolman.

My records indicate Johnson Isaac Gardner married Ester Ann.
There is no indication that Johnson Gardner changed his name from Gardiner to Gardner. The 1850 Censous shows William Gardner with second wife and children living in Linn County Iowa. Also you can find the marriage records for both William and son Johnson in Linn County Iowa.

I would like to compare notes.

Thank you,

Jim Gardner

Hi, I am originally from Maryport and some of my earliest memories (from about 1946 onwards) were of my regular trips to & from Alf Gardiner's Cycle shop, carrying lead acid batteries for our radio set, to be recharged, always managing to drip acid on to my socks, thus burning them.
A very nice man, his shop was on the north east corner of the junction between High Street & Wood Street. Here he repaired & sold bicycles and sold spare parts for same.
regards,
Jack Henderson.
