Michael Gardiner / George Gardiner

Several reports and family trees have indicated that George Gardiner (1599-1677) from Rhoad Island is the same George Gardiner, the son of Rev Michael Gardiner in Englan.
In 1945 G. Andrews Moriarty published a paper raising questions as to this connection. Moriarty did indicate that he could not prove they were not one and the same. Since 1945 has anyone come accross additional research on this connection?

John O. Gardiner, gardiner0@verizon.net

Arthur Gardiner married to Emily (Remington) arrived in Canada, probably Montreal, in the very early 1900's and moved to Vancouver. He had a brother Alfred who preceded him to North America. We know Arthur was born August 31, 1875 in England. Does anyone have someone with that information in their genealogy?

Help needed figuring out Captain James Gardiner/Gardner

I descend from James Gardiner and Sarah Babcock of Exeter, RI. I received a copy of a 1929 DAR application this week and it states that Captain James Gardiner was born in Exeter on 26 OCT 1750 and died in Exeter on 04 FEB 1795, the son of Nicholas Gardiner and Dorcas (of Ephrain) Gardiner. He married 1st Sarah Babcock in 1774 and married 2nd Patience Hall. Between rootsweb, ancestry.com, Family treemaker, and IGI's posted, I have found 13 other versions of who James married and/or descends from and several variations of birth and death dates. Can anyone help me to unravel this mess?

Gardiner Alexander - Married to Frances Bryans from Dernish, Galoon. Fermanagh

He was Born Abt 1870? Married to Frances Bryans 3 June 1890 at Church of Ireland Sellaghy, Galloon, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh (fact Have Cert). I believe he died around 1900 as he is not listed in the 1901 census but my grandfather Joseph Alexander is aged 1 and his brother Walter Samuel is aged 1 Month.

Alexander’s Father was James Gardiner, Residence Derryadd. Frances's Father was James Bryans Residence Dernish. I have looked at various bits of information but cannot work out the spouses. There are a few options registered, but nothing I can pin down. Gardiner with Fawcett or Kirk or Morrow, & Bryans With Murray or Elliot (Enniskillen?).

I believe there was some kind of local census in Galloon around 1850/51. Does anyone know where I might get access to view it? I live in England, and am unlikely to get to visit Ireland as I am partially disabled, my funding and resources are limited, and so any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Also the whereabouts of where I can download free Maps that show the boundries or locations of townships within the Galloon Parish (still trying to get to grips with the Irish locality descriptions so forgive me if I get it wrong :-) ).
Seeking information about two brothers - Alexander Stewart Stevan and Robert Gardiner. Alexander was born in Scotland in 1832 and left Scotland for Canada in 1858. Her married Elizabeth Cushman Goulder (dau of John W and Eliz. Frostic)and settled in Cantely, Quebec. Obit:
OTTAWA JOURNAL AUGUST 8, 1911
MR. ALEX GARDINER
A much esteemed resident of Cantley, Que., Mr. Alexander Stewart Gardiner, died yesterday following several years of illness. He had been employed with the Gatineau Road Company and the Hamilton Powder Company. Besides his wife, he leaves five children, Mrs. Halliday, of Ottawa, George, Robert, J.R., and Miss Mary at home. A brother Robert Gardiner, lives in Australia.

ROBERT GARDINER - no other siblings are referenced so Robert would still be alive in 1911 and living in Australia albeit in his later years - he would be born in or about the same date as Alexander -

These Gardiners are my brick wall and hoping a kind soul can help out.

Any information that anyone hase about the above gentleman would help. I know he had at least one daughter Ann Jane Gardiner (1854/55) born Norwood Surrey (part of Croydon).

His rank or occupation on Ann's marriage is 'gentleman' but that could be wishful thinking on Ann's part.

Dave

Jabez Champlin Gardiner

Jabez Champlin Gardiner (one of my 3rd great grandfathers) 1807-1884 was married to Eliza Bicknell 1809-1879. After he died she married again. She was a descendant of the Bicknells of Weymouth, MA and this couple is listed in the Bicknell Genealogy. They are buried in River Bend Cemetery in Westerly, Rhode Island.

I have few leads to the parentage and ancestors of this man. It seems likely that he is a descendant of the Gardiners of Rhode Island. Any leads are appreciated.

Gardiner - Ireland - Early 1800's

My hope is that in sharing this information we may find a connection either now or in the future.

To begin with we had a lot of information about my husband's great great grandfather and his brothers in a box. Here are the highlights:

His g-g-grandfather, Arthur Stoker Gardiner was b. abt. 1818, and d. Apr. 21, 1886 in the London area. He was a physician who lived most of his life in Ireland. In 1842 he married Margaret Jephson. Her father was John Jephson of Grafton Street. They had only one child, John Samuel Jephson Gardiner who graduated from Trinity College in Dublin. He served as an Anglican minister serving both in Ireland and southern England. The place he served the longest was Black Torrington, in Devon. John Samuel Jephson Gardiner married Sarah MacTier from Belfast. They had two sons.

Arthur Gardiner was married a second time 1871, or 1872, or 1873, in Belfast, to Lavinia Garde who died in 1874 leaving no surviving children.

Arthur had 2 older brothers: William and Robert and possibly other siblings (?Elizabeth b.1805 & ?Letitia b. 1810) -- We suspect that Stoker was their mother's maiden name because two of the brothers definitely had that as a middle name and Robert may have had it as well.

First there was Robert Gardiner (Middle initial maybe S.? -handwriting is difficult-) b. 1806, d. and was buried on May 14, 1890 at Christ Church, Fermoy, Cork.
In 1842 Robert wrote his address as "of the Grange at Fermoy". We believe that he married Jane Gaggin on May 12th, 1840 in St. Luke's, Summerhill, Shadon, Co. Cork. One of the witnesses was W. Stoker Gardiner, probably our William.

Lastly, William Stoker Gardiner, b. abt. 1808, d. in Cork 1873. He was a physician who seemed to have devoted himself to helping the poor in Cork during a big portion of his career. We don't have a record of his having married. He well may have been married.

It "appears" that they may have had a sister named Elizabeth who was born in 1805 in Cork. This person could also have been a very close cousin (?). On the marriage records her father is listed as John Gardiner, "occupation Gentleman", who resided on the Boreen-Managh Rd.

Elizabeth at age abt. 58 married John Lawerence Ryder in St. Nicholas, Cork on Feb., 1863. This marriage was witnessed by " W. Gardiner" and "Robert Gardiner". It was only 7 years later that Ryder died and was buried at St. Luke's, Douglas, Co. Cork.- Elizabeth d. at age 90 on Feb. 6th, 1895 and was buried at St. Luke's, Douglas, as well.

If Elizabeth is a sister then it is very likely that Letitia Mary Gardiner was also a sister. The cemetery plot that holds Elizabeth also holds Letitia who died on Oct.7th, 1887 at age 77. So Letitia was born about 1810.

We can with certainty trace the family lineage from Arthur Gardiner to the present.
HOWEVER, we cannot figure out with any certainty who their
parents/grandparents were.
If John is the name of their father, this is going to be very difficult.
There are hundreds of John Gardiners listed.
And John Gardiner may just be an uncle, etc.

NOW COMES MY REQUEST OF YOU!

I would be most grateful if you could help me find the parents/grandparents of Arthur, Robert, William and maybe the 2 sisters? They were probably were born in Ireland.

SINGLETON GARDINER AND THE AUTO/TRAIN ACCIDENT THAT KILLED HIM

Singleton Gardiner was the Davenport superintendent of the Prudential Insurance Co. He lived at 1327 Arlington Ave, Davenport, IA
He died instantly when the Franklin sedan we was driving, hit a train at the Poppy Gardens CRossing on Rte 7 which is 1/2 mi. south of Colona, Illinois and 15 miles east of Rock Island, Illinois.
The gas tank exploded after hitting the Burlington passenger train. He was burned beyond recognition on his face and chest, with only minor injuries to the rest of his body. Passengers on the train felt the intense heat. His wife Eva riding in the back was badly injured along with their maid. Another man riding in the front died later from injuries. Witnesses said the windshield of teh car was fogged over.

Eva was in poor health until her death 4 years later in the family home. She initially had not been told her her husband's death for frear the shock would cause her death. Singleton was placed in a temporary vault until the Gardiner mausoleum was built. A judge decided with the executers to build the mausoleum.
Those interred: Singleton Gardiner (no b-date) d 11 Jan 1926 at age 62; wive Eva (no maiden) d. 29 May 1930 age 73.
Photos available if you'll e-mail me.

Elizabeth Gardiner b. 1709 MD

Elizabeth Gardiner's father was John Gardiner. If you go back about 10 generations, you find William Gardydyr who married Helen Tudor.
There is a Royal genealogy list showing Helen Tudor, who married William Gardynyr. This Helen's grandparents were Owen Tudor, head of the Tudor line, and Catherine de France, daughter of King Chardles VI of France.
Catherine had previously been married to Henry V of England and had a son who became Henry VI.
I have been able to confirm more than 1/2 of these generations, and will be happy to share the information.
Has anyone seen documentation that our Helen is indeed Helen Tudor of the royal Tudor family?
You can reply to kathyb@pce.net.

GARDINER Family from Nova Scotia

I am looking for a Gardiner family member who may have had slaves back in the 1700's to the early 1800's. My family members are Gardiners from Halifax, Nova Scotia area and I have not been able to trace anyone other than my ggrandfather, George Gardiner who was born in 1860 in Halifax. His mother was a Carter, but we don't know his father's first name or anything about his origins. Some relatives have said it was Samuel or Parkman, others say it was William (that was his firstborn son's name. We do know by photos that George's mother was VERY fair with blue or green eyes and was probably mulatto or quadroon. His father (my elusive gggrandfather) was obviously a darker man because my ggrandfather was medium brown with the same light eyes as his mother. My gggrandfather MUST have been a slave belonging to one of the Gardiners in that area. ANY helpful info is appreciated.

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows a young boy. On the back of the photo is written "Norman Gardiner". The photo was taken at a photo studio but I cannot read the marking. The photo was likely taken during the 1910-1920s. Hopefully someone will recognize their ancestor.

Attached is a copy of the photo. If this is one of your ancestors, please contact me.

Gardiner ancestral home -The Glebe-1721-Kingston, RI

Gardiner researchers,
I'm not a Gardiner researcher but genealogy is my obsession. I just found an old book that belonged to my mother. The book is entitled, " FACTS AND FANCIES CONCERNING NORTH KINGSTOWN, RHODE ISLAND." The book was published in 1941 by the Pettaquamscutt Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, North Kingstown, Rhode Island, 1941. There is a 4 page chapter on The Glebe. According to the chapter The Glebe was a home owned by John Gardiner, who obtained it by Deed dated July 31, 1721, from his father, William Gardiner. It is possible, according to the chapter that William Gardiner inherited the property from his father Benoni Gardiner who was the eldest son of George Gardiner and Herodias.
So that I can share the information in the chapter, I am going to type the four pages and I will be glad to share them with Gardiner researchers if you will write to me at San66Zen@aol.com. There's a lot of information that could be valuable, if not simply interesting to you. The Chapter was written by Col. Hunter C. White documenting the history of old homes in and around Wickford, RI in 1941.
Let me know if I can help you with this information.
Sandra Zenger

His brother, Phillip Gardner, apparently married Betsey Betterley, sister of Lucy.

I found Rhodes Gardner, age 76, and Lucy Gardner, age 75, in the 1860 census for New Lisbon, Otsego Co, NY. Is this my Rhodes and Lucy? Did Phillip and Betsey live in Otsego Co also? If not, then where? There are lots of Gardners in Otsego Co. I would like a list of descendants of these people. Thanks.

My grandfather, Arthur Gardiner, was born in Moberly, Missouri, on December 7, 1882, and moved to Alabama at about age 15 or 16. He was first child born in America of William and Emma (Smith) Gardiner. His siblings born in England were Ella, Elsie, and William, Jr. His sister born in America, in Illinois somewhere, I think, was Lula. Would like to hear from anyone concerning him or any member of his family. Thanks.

Benjamin Gardner, b. abt 1720 Boston, resided in Salem, Massachusetts

I am searching for the ancestry/family of my 6x great grandfather Benjamin Gardner. The records say he was "of Boston" and married there Sarah Randall on 10 Oct 1751 at the West Church. Some transcriptions of this record state her name as Sarah Kendall. She was the daughter of Stephen Randall and Sarah Cannon, of whom I know nothing. She died 1781 in Salem. He also married Mary Briers on 02 Nov 1782 in Salem. The record states "former husbands were Ferguson and Bassett". His two daughters Mary d. Bef. 1792 and Sarah b. Abt. 1755 both married Abijah Hitchings in Salem. There was also at least one son, Benjamin b. 19 Dec 1753 in Boston, who probably married Hannah Meek on 01 Jun 1783 in Salem. Father Benjamin Gardner lived in Boston, Marblehead and Salem and was a ropemaker with Josiah Gaines.

This family is mentioned in the famous 3 volume diary of Rev. William Bentley D.D. of Salem, Pastor of the East Church. The Rev. Bentley calls him a "great friend" and mentions him on dozens of pages, and describes his wife and children, as well as the Hitchings in the next generation. The vital records in Salem do not give any clues to his parentage. The Bentley diary mentions a Gardner brother dying in Boston 27 sep 1789.

Elizabeth (Gardiner) Quick, b.1832, dau of Joseph & Margaret Gardiner, of Fulton Co., IL

I have an original 17” x 20” studio photograph of the “Andrew Quick family of Canton, Illinois”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1895-1900, in Canton (Fulton Co.) IL, and is a photo of ten people: “Elizabeth Gardiner Quick” and her nine children. On the back of the photo are all the names of the children, with years of birth and death of all, and even the married surnames of the daughters. In the photo the youngest (Roscoe) looks to be about age 18-20.

I found the family in the 1860, 1870, 1880 & 1900 censuses for Fulton Co., IL, with dates of birth corroborating the information given on the photo (with one minor exception). The children were Frank, Joseph, Mary, Harriet (Hattie), John, Charles, Margaret (Maggie), James and Roscoe. In Ancestry’s OneWorldTree, Elizabeth Gardiner’s DOB is 21 Aug 1832.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Elizabeth Quick or her children, of Fulton Co., IL.

RI Gardiners: Amy Gardiner who m Lyman Clark

I'm seeking the names of the parents of Lyman Clark and Amy Gardner. Lyman Clark was apparently born in Pawtucket Rhode Island - probably between 1790 and 1821 (his daughter Susan Clark was born in 1839). His wife was Amy Gardner (probably of the Rhode Island Gardiners) and was likely born between the later 1790s and 1821 in Kingstown, Rhode Island.

The source of this information is their daughter Susan Clark's obituary from Attleboro (Mass) Sun in 1912. There is no birth record for Susan Clark in the Rhode Island Archives (although census data shows she was born in what became North Providence, Rhode Island; the Clark homestead was apparently in Central Falls). Susan married Ephraim Hunt Tappan in 1856 and resided in Attleboro for the rest of her life. I am unaware of any siblings she might have.

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

Joseph Hicks of Bedford Mills or Algoma, Canada

I am looking for information on Joseph Hicks who lived around the Bedford Mills area - in Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada. Joseph Hicks was remarried and had two families. I am the descendant of his first family through his son, William. Very interested to hear from any descendants who may have more information on Joseph (buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Little Rapids) such as his date of immigration, reason for immigrating, your relation to Joseph, and exisiting photos. Esp. interested in descendants of his 'second family' possibly in the Desbarats, Ontario area or others.
I am working on a family history and I would be pleased to share information. Anything - no matter how trivial - may help.
SEARCHING for GARDINERs in PERTHSHIRE

I have now confirmed that my gg grandmother Jane Sutherland was an Illegitimate child of Mary Gardiner and Robert Sutherland.

Kirk Session records from Jan 1838 show that Mary Gardiner was "interrogated" and declared that she was lawfully married to James Taylor in 1824 who deserted her 9 months later and has not been seen or heard from since. She further declares that Robert Sutherland- shoemaker- Auchterarder is the father of her 2 children; Elizabeth born Nov 1834 and Jane born Mar 1837.

Robert Sutherland later admits that he is father of Mary Gardiners children and that he was guilty of "ante-nuptial fornification", he also declares that he is now lawfully married.

My problem now is that i can find no trace of either Mary, Elizabeth or Jane in years between 1838 and 1857, i have tried to find them under surnames of Gardiner/ Sutherland and Taylor with no success.

It seems as though Mary and Robert were living together as husband and wife but were unable to marry as she was lawfully married to James Taylor and divorce was out of question then, and then Robert meet and married catherine anderson and had another family.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me to find out what became of Mary Gardiner and Elizabeth sutherland?
Any help at all greatly appreciated!
Regards
Gardiner - James /or Edward

It is my understanding that the line of Gardiners that I am descended from had the tradition of including the name(s) James /or Edward in the name of their first-born male child. It is also my inderstanding that my paternal grandfather, George Edward, came from the New England area. Are there any other Gardiner descendants on here that have that have (have found) that same family tradition?

Sir Thomas Gardiner vs. Thomas Gardiner, Esq. London 1588

Can anyone tell me who I have here? I thought that I was looking at the will of Sir Thomas Gardiner (dated 1588) who married Ellyn Smyth. Thomas Richard Gardiner in "Generations and Relations", shows Sir Thomas and Ellyn having: Margaret (b. 1588), William (b. 1589), Richard (b. 1592), Frances (b. 1593), Catherine (b. 1596), Mary (b.1598), Thomas (b. 1603) and Fortune (b. 1605).

This will of Thomas Gardiner, Esq. is dated London, 1588. It shows children: Mary, Elizabeth, Walter, Robert, Thomas, William and Henry. It also mentions Brother, (read:Brother-in-law?) William Smyth.

Am I to assume that this was Sir Thomas's will prior to being knighted (1603) and that all, if not most of the children mentioned died. Or is this someone else completely?
