Want to add, i have no doubt that she died in 1835...I have a copy of that record. But that her age is incorrect. Don;t know of any woman who had a child at age 54 and then went on to have 5 more children after that!

The narrative was by a Grignon..offhand I don't recall which one. And it contains errors.. as do many of the spoken narratives of by people.

As I mentioned, I believe the person who took the data was non French speaking person who misunderstood the French for 75. I don't believe age 105 in 1835 was correct for the reasons I mentioned. I have seen the record. It is not correct.

I am not sure what narrative you are speaking about from the Wisconsin Historic Collection that you state that the author is an old man and that you believe he is mistaken. However, Marguerite's Death Certificate is on page #4 of Book #1 in the Brown County Register of Deeds office and on the death certificate it says "Marguerite De Roy, Female, 105 years". Next to "Date of Death" is written "December 12, 1835". Next to "Place in which the person died" is written "Green Bay". Next to "Location of burial ground in which interred" is written "Bellevue".

This information was more than likely acquired and then recorded from the records of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Congregation at Green Bay. It was originally written by Father Hoffen on June 13, 1865. He states that he gathered the information from authentic monuments and a note written by Rev Fr. VandenBroek which says that several burials "are marked on the door of the little chapel of the cemetery." There are ten names for the year 1835 and Marguerite's name is among them. It says "1835 December 12 Marguerite DE ROY 105 years". On the same day "Narciss Paul Grignon, 30 years" also died. There is a note on the same page that says "In the year 1834, were interred in this place, 30, dead of the contagious sickness (asiatic cholera)." However, it does not say how the ten in 1835 died. These are the only documents other than her marriage contract to Joseph Roy dated April 13, 1807 that I have found, with the exception of sworn testimony by her son Perrish Grignon (one of three children from Marguerite's first marriage to Pierre Grignon) where he states that he is the brother of Catherine Roy who is married to Alexis Garguepier.

In the book "Memories of Old Duck Creek" by Jeanne and Les Rentmeester there is a lot of background on the connection of Jeanne M. (Rioux) Rentmeester and the Roy family.

I do not believe that Francois' mother, Marguerite who married joseph Roi in 1806 was 105 in 1835. I do not believe she was born in 1830... think an error occured when a non French speaking person misunderstood the French for 75
soixante-quinze --and wrote 105.
--------
If she, Marguerite wife of Joseph Roi, was born in 1730, then she was 54 when first child, Angelique was born in1784
and she was 55 when Charlotte was born in 1785
and she was 57 when Catherine was born in 1787
and she was 59 when Francois was born in 1790
and she was 63when Pierre was born in 1793
and she was about 66 when last child was born Marie... unknown birth date.
sorry, I don’t believe all this!
The author was an old man when he wrote the article for the WI Historical Society.. there were quite a few errors in it.

My father was Peter Gardipee and he had a brother named Joe. Martha Gardipee Storlie was my Aunt. She passed away a couple of years ago. Bob Van Gunten is my cousin. From one of the Gardipees, I got a list of all my Aunts and Uncles, all have passes except i think for one who lives in Oregon. Please e mail me and i will dig out the list of names. Mr. Van Gunten knows a lot about our family also. My cousins in Montana dont seem to communicate with me. I wanted to be included on the list for the Little Shell Band and told Robert Gardipee (another cousin)but he seems to have forgotten. I never heard from him again. I sent Christmas cards to all cousins i know of, but have heard nothing. This is probably as much my fault as any and they are probably too busy with their lives to worry about a far away California cousin.

I am descended from Dorothy Mary Vervoen Kroening Gardipee and John August Kroening, they are my grandparents. My mom is Judy Ann Kroening Newsum. Dorothy later married second, Harold Joseph Gardipee. I am looking to find the marriage certificate for Harold and Dorothy. Does anyone know where to find this information????

I would love to connect with any, all or some of Harold's children to find out more about them, as I never met him but my mom would occasionally get a card or a call from him. I was named after my grandmother, Dorothy in the form of her middle name. My mom has written several letters to Dale, Wayne, Joseph and Gary over the years but lately to no avail and no response. She would dearly love to hear from them.... and I am sure, my Uncle Roger would too.

thank you!

Mary Collette (Newsum) Yoho

Greetings!
Thank you for your response.
The other researcher has also replied to you--her name's Jan. She and I just recently started working on the Gardipee family though she's further along on some aspects of it than I am. She's coming from a Brunette connection and I am coming from the Roy/LeRoy connection.
Jan e-mailed to say you had replied privately and indicated you had trouble reaching me privately. My server had some trouble with certian e-mail addresses earlier this week. It's supposed to be fixed. You can try me again at llking47@embarqmail.com
I think we can all be of great help to each other! I have done a lot of genealogical networking on these early Fur trade families and am a great believer in putting several heads and research techniques together. Hope to hear from you, Linda
I will start with Joseph LeRoi and Margueritte Oskinananotame (Nanantaotami). On April 13th, 1807 they had a marriage contract written up and signed by Judge Reaume. They were elderly at this point and the children this document legitimized were listed as Magdeleine Roy; Engelique Roy married to Jacque Veaux; Charlotte Roy married to Joseph Camane; Francois Roy; Catherine Roy married to Alexis Gargue'pie.

Marguerittee Roy had previously been married to Pierre Grignon Sr.
According to Augustin Grignon in the Wisconsin Historic Collection Vol.3 page 242 when speaking about his father said "By his first wife, a Menominee woman, he had three children, one of them died young from an injury by a fall, another died while at school in Montreal, and the other, Perrish, grew up, and raised a family." Pierre Grignon Sr. then left his first wife to marry Domitelle De Langlade, the daughter of Charles De Langlade.
On page 243 Augustin describes Joseph Roy and his brother Amable. He says "Joseph Roy had been employed as an engage, and married a Menominee woman, and raised two sons and four daughters, and survived some years after the war of 1812-15, and his very aged widow was still living but a few years since. Her death certificate is dated December 12,1835. She is listed as Marguerite De Roy, Female, 105 years old. Which if this is her true age would indicate that she was born around 1730. She was buried in the oldest cemetery in the State of Wisconsin referred to as the "Old French Cemetery" located in downtown Green Bay. This cemetery was later destroyed by various greedy downtown developers that came to La Baye as a result of the immigration of Yankee land speculators from New York in the 1830's. They were mainly known as the Astor Company, and worked for John Jacob Astor. There are now buildings and streets paved over this cemetery where many of the historic residents of La Baye were buried as early as 1720, and their remains still lie there.

In the notebook of John W. Edmonds, the Indian Agent for the Federal government sent to research the Menominee mixed bloods of the La Baye area in 1831, Perrish the surviving son of this union between Margueritte and Pierre Grignon Sr. testifies that Mary Clermont's mother was a half breed Menominee & was his sister. Mary Clermont was formerly Mary Gardipier the daughter of Alexandre Gardipier and Catherine Roy. Therefore he is saying that Catherine Roy is his sister. (Technically his half sister) John Edmonds described Perrish as a “Clever old fellow”, and said the Menominee Chief Chin-nay-pay-mawlay (The Man Who Is Looking) testified their mother (Margueritte) was a pure Menominee squaw.

On page 290 Augustin Grignon states “a Menominee named O-Nau-Ge-Sa, who had married a Potawottamie woman living there, took up his residence at Milwaukee, and became the head chief of the village. He was the brother of Mrs. Joseph Roy, of Green Bay and would often pay her visits...” He describes him as “a kind and worthy Indian”
Also on page 292 he speaks about “Match-B-Se-Be, or Bad River, a brother of the Chief O-Nau-Ge-Sa.” This would indicate that he was also the brother of Margueritte Roy.
Hopefully you are all following this. The next time I am able to post, I will list the children of Alexandre and Catherine that I have data on.
I’m also researching the family of Alexis/Alexander Gardipee. My records differ a little bit from yours. I have Alexis as an early settler in the Green Bay area, it is believed that he came to the area in the capacity of a voyageur. He can be found as early as the 1818-1830-1836 & 1840 censuses for Brown County, as well as the 1821 map of Green Bay. Alexis was born and baptized 27 July 1782 at St-Louis-de-France, Terrebonne, Quebec, the son of Germain Gariepy and Marie-Claire Richard of Lachenaie, Qc. and died in 1845. He is buried (along with his wife) in the Old Frenchtown Cemetery in Prairie du Chien.

It isn’t known for sure how long he lived in the territory before he married Catherine (Micholckeve) Roy, the daughter of Joseph Roy and Marguerite (Oskinananotame), but some have suggested the year 1806. Up to now, I haven’t found any documentation to prove or disprove this.

According to the 1830 census this couple were the parents of 8 children. Up to now I’ve only been able to find 7 of them (all listed on the 1836 Menominee rolls) and can only verify 5 of the 7 with baptismal and marriage records. The children I’ve found include:

Alexander Jr. – b. 4 July 1811
Francois – b. Oct. 1813
Jacques (James) – b. 4 July 1817
Joseph – b. 14 Dec. 1822
Appoline/Pauline Gardipee, b. 1824; m. 18 February 1843 to Etienne Brunette
Michael – b. 1827
Charles – b. 1834

If you or anyone else can help me with information on any of the above children it would be greatly appreciated. You can reach me privately at jdorn5@juno.com
Greetings!
Thank you for your reply. There is a lot to consider in what you're saying.
I have the following children from the 1848 Mix-Blood Menominee rolls: Alexander, who I believe is a Junior, Francois, James and Joseph.
I believe Joseph may be the fellow who appears at Prairie du Chien in the 1850 census. I have a Catholic marriage record for Joseph Galipi with Julie Menard from Prarie du Chien, dated 25 June 1827. They were previously married by a J.P., 18 Nov 1822.
There is also an Alexander and unnamed wife buried in the Frenchtown Cemetery at Prairie du Chien. Cannot tell if this might be the father, or Alexander Jr. since there are no birth dates with the 1845 burial.
There is a Jeremiah Garepee, age 66, born Canada with wife Emily, age 60, also born Canada in the 1850 census for Green Bay. Seems too old to be Alexander Sr.'s child.
The 1830 census for Brown Co. lists Alexander Gardepies and the oldest male in the household was between 40-50. So, I am assuming this is Sr. with 10 people in his household, so that works out to the 8 children you believe he had.
Also in that census is a Boneventure Gardipier, between the age of 20-30. Of an age to be Alexander's son, but I cannot find him in a census after that.
The 1840 census for Brown Co., shows Alexander with 6 people in the household and 2 of them between the ages 50-60. And there is a Germain Gaillipie with 4 people in the household, the oldest make being 30-40.
Can you give me a clue on how to sort this out? And your ideas on who the Alexander buried at Prairie du Chien might be?
As to his parentage--I'm no where on that. I see you saying he appears out of nowhere, but am wondering how you tie him to the family of Jean-Paul LeGardeur de St. Pierre.
A polygamy trial? I knew there were trials held because the husbands and wives were living without benefit of a recognized marriage. The phrase was "in the custom of the country". Do you have names for both wives?
No, sorry to say I do not live near Green Bay. I so wish I did (except in the winter)!!! I pass your info on to the other researcher and see what she wants to do on this.
Hope you can help me with some of the details. Linda

Greetings, and thank you for this information. It is all very fascinating. I am searching for as much information as we can on the GARDIPEE family background. I'm Steven M. Gardipee, son of Harold Joseph Gardipee of Green Bay: contact me at sgardipee@charter.net. Thank you.

I have data on 8 of the children of Alexandre and Catherine. They were a difficult family to trace, especially Alexandre who seems to have emerged out of nowhere. Which children do you have so far? There is quite a bit of misinformation out there on this family. They are often confused with the Gariepy family, but I don't think that is the same family. I think it is the family of Jean-Paul LeGardeur de St. Pierre from LaPointe and his son Louis from Sault Ste. Marie. Schoolcraft in Vol.5 of the Minnesota Historic Collection talks about this son Louis. I think the mother may have been of Indian origin as this son is not recorded in Tanguay or Jette, and Jean-Paul LeGardeur's wife Marie Leneuf was deceased many years before this son was born. Schoolcraft's wife was from the band of Ojibwa's that had had close trade relationships and were allies in war with this family of LeGardeur. They were also connected with the Caddotte family (business partners or employees of Louis LeGardeur). Because the Leneuf family were known Huguenots, this couple did not necessarily have their children baptized in the Catholic Church. And therefore the children are not so easy to follow, as if they had been Catholic. Jean-Paul LeGardeur seems to have more of a Huguenot affiliation than some of the other LeGardeur's that did not dwell so far west. Many of the 18th Century La Baye families were themselves or were descended from Huguenots. That is why there was not a Catholic mission here, once the one established by Father Allouez was burned in the late 1600's. Not until sometime after the Yankees arrived in 1816 did the Catholics establish a permanent presence here. Jean Paul LeGardeur had a close connection with the Ojibwas of the Lake Superior area, especially the LaPointe bands. This family is also connected through marriage to the Marin's and the Caron's, with their Menominee and Potawatomi Tribal connections. This goes for almost all the late 18th Century families of the La Baye area that were located on the west bank of the Fox River. (The Brunettes, Vieau's, Maccabee's, etc.) I don't think anyone had really ever done a very thorough study on Alexandre Gardipier, because it is such a challenge. He is a mysterious person. It is a complex family to trace because he had two wives at the same time. Luckily he was arrested for it or we would not have even know that. He was certainly raised in an Indian culture as he pleaded innocent in court to polygamy saying he did not know it was illegal to have more than one wife. That was common in those days, several Menominee Chiefs had more than one wife. I believe Thomas Caron (Chief Tomah) had four wives if I remember correctly. We are still discovering new things every few months. It is easier to trace Alexandre's children than it is to trace him, as once the Yankees came this far west there are written documents.
Do you live near the Green Bay area. Who is the researcher that you mentioned was also looking for information? Does she or he have much that they have discovered so far?

My interest is thru the Roi/LeRoy/LeRoy family. My gg-grandmother's first husband was Francis LeRoy's (son of Joseph and Margarite) oldest son with Theresa L'Ecuyer--John LeRoy. I am trying to flesh out the LeRoy family.

Your Catherine LeRoi would've been my Franicis LeRoy's sister. I am looking for death dates and locations for both Catherine and Alexander, and a complete list of their children, as I have only some possible children at this point.

I also have a contact with another researcher who would be interested in your Gardipee family information.

You may contact me privately if you wish at llking47@embarmail.com with Gardipee in the subject line.

Thank you, Linda
