Edward (Neddy) Gardner came to the Granite Hill community of Iredell Co NC from Cabarrus County in 1850, based on a land deed [Iredell Co Book 4, p. 337, July 4, 1850: Wm McKay of Iredell and Edward Gardner of Cabarrus]. His tombstone at St James Episcopal Church cemetery in modern-day Shinnsville, Iredell Co., lists his birth and death as Feb 12, 1801 and May 5, 1885. The cemetery is a mile south of the Gardner land. The 1880 census lists his birthplace as North Carolina and each of his parents as having been born in Maryland. Edward Gardner's wife Catharine lived Aug 26, 1797 to May 4, 1864, according to her tombstone at St. James cemetery.

Marriage bonds and censuses in Cabarrus County and its precursors show a number of Gardners:

o The 1790 census for the "Salisbury District" of Mecklenburg Co. lists William with 2 free white males over 16, two free white males under 16, and 4 free white females;
James with 1, 1, 6, and 2 slaves; and John with 1, 1, and 2. Salisbury in now in Rowan County, although the Salisbury District was or included present Cabarrus County. A John Gardiner [sic] is recorded as having died in Rowan County on May 16, 1841 at age 77 (Marriage and Death Notices from the Western Carolinas by Tompkins, 1975), although another source says 1831. That would make his birthdate about 1764 or 1754.
o In the newly formed Cabarrus County, Sophia Gardner married David Killogh on 12/4/1793, Nancy Gardner married Joshua Bradley on 8/17/1796 (Hezekiah Gardner, Bondsman), and Sussanah [sic] Gardner married Joseph Park on 7/30/1800 (William Gardner, Bondsman).
o 1800 shows William (1 male and 1 female over 45, 1 male and 1 female 26-45 plus 1 slave, Cabarrus p. 679), John Gardin (1 male and 1 female over 45, 1 male and 1 female 16-26, Meck p. 594), and Robert Gardenor (1 male and 1 female 26-45, 1 female 10-16, 2 males and 2 females under 10, Meck p. 583).
o 1810 shows William (Meck p. 47), James (Cabarrus 136), John (Meck 48), and Brazilla (Meck 28).
o 1820 shows James (Cab 31), John (Meck 6), and Hezekiah (Cab 11); marriage bonds show that Hezekiah J. Gardner married Ruth N. Gardner in 1818 in Cabarrus, witnessed by James Gardner.
o 1830 Cabarrus shows Hezekiah (p. 172), James (172), and Edward (181).
o 1840 Cabarrus shows Edward (Cabarrus 25) and John (Meck 288).

Cabarrus County deeds show the Gardners as well. [I mostly have just the grantee/grantor indices.] The first is a grant from Alexander Martin, Governor Captain General of NC, to James Gardner of 9-1/2 acres in "Mecklenburg" but registered in 1790 in Cabarrus (Book 1, p. 37). Later deeds granted to "James Gardner" are at 2/304, 2/305, 5/11 (from Robert Gardner), and 8/356 with deeds from James at 4/73, 4/76, 8/418, 10/226, 10/291. Book 2, p. 397, records a deed from William Gardner to James Gardner, Jr., so these deeds may be to two or more Jameses (perhaps James Jr is James Marion Gardner). William Gardner also appears earlier as a grantor at 2/13; Hezekiah J. Gardner as a grantee at 11/422 and grantor at 12/366; and Francis Gardner as a grantee at 3/77.

Edward Gardner of Cabarrus first appears in the Cabarrus deeds as a deed grantee in 1829 (Bk 11, p 189) for 135 acres on Rocky River from Ozmi Rogers at $400. In 1846, he was deeded 179 acres from Robert H Crawford for $201.37 (15/485).

As an old man, on 9/5/1871 (Bk 24/440) Edward Gardner of Iredell bought 89 acres on Rocky River from Moore A. Emerson and his wife Ellen for $10 plus three promissory notes of $317.85 (3/27/1872), $317.85 (3/27/1873), and $317.87 (3/27/1874). The same day (24/442), he bought 51 acres adjacent to the Emersons under similar terms from T B Craven and his wife Sophia: $10 plus three promissory notes of $182.14 (3/27/1872), $182.14 (3/27/1873), and $182.15 (3/27/1874). Finally, on 9/10/1874, he deeded (29/549) the 179 acres on Rocky River bought from Robert Crawford "for natural love" to his son William D. Gardner, the land where this William was living.

Cabarrus County marriage bonds show that William D. Gardner had been married on 9/12/1855 to Elizabeth L. Fesperman by R.C. Cooke, Justice of the Peace, where the bondsman was John M. Gardner. This was John Morgan Gardner (9/21/1834-2/28/1864), another son of Edward. In 1860 John built a house on the Iredell County land, and it still stood with the date painted in the chimney until it burned in the 1970’s.

John Gardner’s tombstone and military records show that he died at Liberty Mills near Orange County Courthouse, VA, in service with Company I of North Carolina's 7th Infantry Regiment (http://www.homestead.com/cranfords/files/Roster4.html). He left his widow, Sarah Ann Mills Gardner (4/25/1833-4/2/1910, bur St James Episcopal), and three small children:

o Mary Catherine Gardner (b. abt 1858, m. 4/29/1880 to Winfield Scott Westmoreland, b. 4/18/1853, moved "out west" sometime between 1880-85),
o Margaret Elizabeth Gardner (4/6/1860-9/3/1930, m. 12/18/1979 to George Washington Westmoreland 7/8/1859-2/3/1904, my great grandparents, bur St James. These two Westmorelands were brothers who grew up next door to the Gardners], and
o John Atkinson Gardner (b. abt 1861).

After the Civil War, although Sarah had lots of Mills family in the neighborhood, Edward (the widower grandfather), Sarah (the widowed daughter-in-law), and the three grandchildren seem to have made up the household until Catherine and John grew up and left. Edward’s will mentions only Sarah and these three grandchildren, leaving $500 to Catherine, the house and property to Maggie (with residence promised for Sarah), and $5 to John (who was apparently under some cloud).
