Here's some info for those of you descended from Wilhelm Gerges 1704-1753.
His family name is spelled Gerges on his tombstone at Old Goschenhoppen Cemetery in Woxall, Montgomery County, PA. I have a photo of it for anyone interested.
The name is spelled many different ways in documents, though never "Kirkes" which I think was a mistake by the ship's clerk when he emigrated rom Germany. (The ship was the Brittania.) He was from the area of Germany opposite the city of Cologne--the Duchy of Berg.
I've seen the name spelled Geerkes, Geerkas, Gerkas, Goerkis, and most often, Garges. Heaven knows how he pronounced it, but as I say, his headstone, and that of his wife and sister all say "Gerges."
I have traced two lines of his children, William and Henry, and know most of their living places and burial places.
