Re: Garmany Ancestry

I just looked at your tree, and I see that you already have that:) But do you have this document?
============ Capt Hammond (Hamilton) Garmany =========Hamilton Garmany was the son of John Garmany Jr. and Sophia Feltman. John Garmany Jr. emigrated from Armagh County, Ireland, with his father John Garmany and two brothers, William and Hugh. They arrived by ship at Charleston, SC, August 6, 1785. They settled in Newberry, SC, with William departing for Kentucky and Hugh departing for Murfeesboro, TN, in 1786. While these were not the first Garmanys to come to America, the earlier immigrants died and the records that we have been able to locate indicate that this family represented the first Garmany to come to America and have the surname survive. Hamilton Garmany had four brothers (John, George, William and James) and two sisters (Peggy and Mary). Records do not indicate when John moved his family to Gwinnett County, Georgia, nor why Hamilton subsequently moved to Walker County, Georgia. I believe that John moved his family there when his brother, Dr. James Garmany married Mary Selina Dunlap of Gwinnett County, Georgia, and continued to reside there after the marriage 1/1/1835. Dr. James Garmany died in Sheltonville, GA, 12/16/1862 and was buried in Lawrenceville, GA. Hamilton Garmany married Margaret McDill and together they had six children: John, Washington, Newton, Jernigan, Josephine, and Frances. I have more information on Dr. James Garmany since I am a descendent of his rather than Hamilton Garmany. He was my Great-great-grandfather. My great-grandmother, Isla Selina Garmany was born in Atlanta on 12/31/1859. Her sister was born in Gwinnett County, GA. Family records indicate that Cpt. Hamilton Garmany commanded the battle of Shepherd's Plantation during the Creek Indian War and that he was wounded during that battle. If I can be of more assistance, please let me know. Also, if you happen to have any information on the Garmany family in Gwinnett County, Lawrenceville, Sheltonville or Atlanta, I would appreciate receiving that information.
My grandparents left Ireland in the early 1900's-4 brothers left at the same time, one went to America and the other 3 went on a ship round Africa, two brothers got off at Cape Town and made their way to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The other brother stayed on the ship and went to Australia. I was told they changed their name to Garmony during one of the world wars as they thought Garmany was too similar to Germany.

Thank you for your response/info. I have uncovered much more since, but, this is indeed my mother's family. Agnes, my grandmother, is James' 2nd wife. Miriam is my mother and only child of James & Agnes. James was actually born in Ireland (unknown location at this point) and emigrated to Manchester, England when he was about 15. His father was William and mother was Margaret. He had several younger brothers & sisters. His father, William was listed as an Iron Worker and James was a 'clerk'. He was an accountant as an adult in Pittsburgh, PA. And so... not as well off as once believed. In an earlier post, it was mentioned his grave lay near the Galbraith family plot. That was my grandmother Agnes' family. Also mentioned: 'Jannie' is Jennie, Frank is an unknown before new addition, and when searching his name saw that he moved to Minnesota and then to No. Dakota. I never heard any more about him. Eugene went by the name Robert all his life, but on official docs was listed as Eugene O., and Miriam is my mother. Thank you to all who have taken the time to search this info and post it here. This is a great community!

Interested in the details regarding the deaths of Dr.James Garmany and wife Mary Salina Dunlap. I know from my records that their married son Henry Clay Garmany had moved to Arkansas along with Mary Salina Dunlap's brothers. In the 1860's,following the war, both James and Mary died leaving several small children. The Mary's family took the children down river to New Orleans and upriver to Camden, Arkansas to live with Henry Garmany and the Dunlaps. I just don't know details of their death or the cemetary where they were buried.

Happy to help in anyway I can. One of the best places to start with is the online Gwinnett County Georgia genealogy resources. The Dunlap and Garmany families moved to Gwinnett County from South Carolina and prior to their moves to Arkansas.

Here's what I found from a brief search at Ancestry.com:

1920 census - Pittsburgh, PA ( 3224 Orleans St, rental)
James M GARMANY , age 51
Agnes M GARMANY, age 41
Jannie M GARMANY, age 23
Eugene O GARMANY, age 14
Miriam A GARMANY, age 4 3/12

1900 census - Allegheny City, Allegheny Co, PA
ages don't match exactly, and wife is called Margaret J, but there is a 4 y.o Jennie, and a 6 y.o. Frank R.
James gives his immigration year as 1891.
As wife born in England, I think this is his first wife.
Wonder if Jennie is your "Det"? Frank R could be Frank Ray/robert.
They are listed as being married for 13 years, Margaret says she birthed 5 children, only 2 living in 1900.
Jennie born Aug 1895/PA
Frank R. born March 1894/PA

1910 census - Pittsburgh ward 26, Allegheny Co, PA
James M GARMANY, now widowed, age 40
Frank R. GARMANY, son, age 15
Jennie M GARMANY, daughter, age 14

I've got a James K Garmany in my files, but no Dunlap, or daughter named Nancy.
I've got James K GARMANY ( b Dec 1840/SC) m around 1860 to Emma C HATCH ( b ca 1842-46/GA)
by 1900, she had birthed 11 children, only 4 living. I've got 4-5 known children:
Carrie, Hockley, Fannie H, Lambert M, and Carrie L .. not sure if one of the Carries died, and another child was named that as well.

The Francis that you speak about, does she have a sister, Matha or Mary? I think this is the same linage as mine.

I have some information on this group before 1830's and alot from then to the present.

I live in the Armuchee ga area, which is not far from Sugar Valley.

Do you have a time frame for when Francis would have lived in the Tenn area? I have been looking for her brother William's marriage to Susan Jane Jones, who was a full blood Cherokee. I have pictures of her, and William but nothing further back.

Look forward to hearing from all with any lineage.

Karen

They came from Ireland, to Newberry, South Carolina, then made their way thru Georgia and finally settled in Alabama.
I'm sure there is a connection somewhere, but I don't have a Francis who married a Wadkins. You can e-mail me at patti@pattispromise.com. I'm been working on this lineage for about a year so far.
