Re: Garnett Family of VA

Good Morning oclarke11 . . . I, too, am searching GARNETT (Thomas Mitchell GARNETT line m Catherine Michie. Their residence was Louisa Co, VA). Abt 1860 he took his family (wife and 2 children too Caroline Co for safety during the war -- why C Co? Because he had relatives there. I suspect because of his father, Thomas J GARNETT, m. Salina Elizabeth Carpenter (Louisa Co., 13 Jan 1833). I find Thomas J GARNETT with Salina and 2 children in Louisa Co, 1840 census. That's all. I cannot locate Thomas J GARNETT beyond that.

Do you have any info for Thomas J GARNETT you can share with me? I would appreciate any assistance.

Now, your information. I may have 2-3 names I can pass on to you in a couple of weeks (leaving in a few minutes on a traveling business trip).

Here are several good resources that may help in your search.

Doug GARNETT, MyFamily registry, has excellent info he might help with.

Here are 3 books for excellant resource helps. I happened to find them through a library friend. Not sure if they are available for sale -- eBay perhaps.

Genealogy of the Mercer-Garnett Family of Essex County, 1910, 92 pgs, Richmond, VA, Whittet & Shepperson, printers. This book does have great info and family lines. Some of the families moved from Essex Co into Caroline Co. Names get a little confusing at times because of same name . . . but great help with different Garnett lines.

The Garnetty Family and Story of the Family of Robert Kirtley Garnett, Harriett Elizabeth Garnett-Shaw, 1955, 162 pgs, publisher unknown, Oaklahoma City, OK. Another excellent book for information.

Cursory Family Sketches, S. Ann Garnett, Albany: J. Munsell (printer), 1870, 140 pgs.

I would appreciate any assistance for my need: Thomas J GARNETT, his parents, dob, location for birth, etc.

I trust the books will be helpful. Please respond. I will be able to get my messages while away but cannot send out.
Thanks for ANY assistance.

Hi Ann. Found your message. Searching GARNETT. My grandfather was Robert Michie GARNETT, Sommerset, VA (Orange area). His father: Thomas Mitchell GARNETT m. America Catherine Michie. His father: Thomas J. GARNETT (dob abt 1805) m. Salina Elizabeth CARPENTER (Louisa Co., VA; 1/13/1833). Thomas J GARNETT's family, 1840 VA census was Louisa Co, VA.

That is where my 15+ year brick wall begins. Does any of the above look familiar? I have an idea where the Thomas J GARNETT parents will lead me BUT IDEAS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT SOURCES.

Thank you for any comments.

Garnetts in Westmorland, Preston, Salford & Machester

My 3x great grandfather was Thomas Garnett born about 1786.
He was a shoemaker and lived in Aikrigg End Kendal. His wife was Eleanor or Ellin (spelling varies) and they had children baptised in Kendal up to 1832. I found their son Thomas born 1836 in Preston and then recently found what I think is the same family in the 1841 Manchester census. (This will confirm Thomas' birth 1786) Haven't found a marriage for him yet. I am descended from Thomas and Eleanor's son William born 1826 Kendal. Will be pleased to hear from anyone wanting to share information.

Lyn

Hello,
I just wanted to say that it has been very cool to read how far back all of you have mapped my family history. My grandfather is the late Douglas Garnett of Garnett Settlement it has been very interesting to read how far back my family goes and to where. If anyone that doesn't have any information on the continuation of his family... meaning my mother and my aunts and uncle and their children, I would be happy to comply :) If there is someplace that I could read the entirety of your hard work I would very much like to see my tree and how far back and to where my roots began.
Thank You

Hi Toni

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, was away for the weekend for my son's baseball tournament.

Children of Walter and Bessie (Garnett) London are

Marion Hazel London born March 24, 1904 died January 12, 1971 and married Percy Henry French

Kathleen Margaret London born Aug 6, 1905 died March 1, 1990 1st married Frank Clifford Gilchrist and then James Ennis Garnett

Raymond C. Note - if you had seen the headstone in the Garnett Settlement cemetery James' headstone said he was born February 19, 1907 but upon finding documentation with his signature on it and his death certificate from NB registrations says he was born February 21st, 1907 - his headstone has since been changed.

Ralph Ober London born May 10, 1912 died March 5, 1985 married Hazel Kewell Hoyt

Roy Berton London born May 31, 1916 died October 15, 1998 married Lucy May Nickerson

Gertrude Christina London born October 2, 1918 died Sept 7, 1958 married Eric Charles Hoyt

Christina Elizabeth London born April 17, 1920 still living - married James Oscar Garnett

Garnett Willard London - born Feb 17, 1922 - married Flossie Spencer Mayo

Walter Raymond Garnett London born January 26, 1910

***Note - not sure if Raymond C. London belongs to Bessie and Walter or not - has not been confirmed.

If you wouldn't mind I would very much like the address of Doug Garnett. I visit the Garnett Settlement often to lay flowers at my grandparents graves. Did not know my grandfather James Thomas London as he died when my mother was two years old. His wife Ellen, my grandmother died in 1999, she never remarried after James' death in 1941.

Thanks again for getting back to me, please keep in touch.

Sue
researching surname London on mother's side and Cole for my father's side

January 2009
I'm a relative of yours. My mom's maiden name was Moore and she grew up in the family home in Garnett Settlement. I have a copy of The Garnett History that was compiled by one of our relatives for a reunion sometime around 1987. My cousin and I are working on a family tree web site. Please contact me so we can discuss this. I would love to have Doug's email too if he is indeed the main man to go to. We trace back to Thomas and Mary Garnett who moved from England to N.B. in 1818 and founded Garnett Settlement. My grandparents lived in the old family home. If you were at a reunion, was it held in the tiny little house right by the road, at the end of the driveway to a house set way back off the road? That bigger house was my grandparents.
I hope to hear from you. I live in Toronto now but my cousins still live in N.B., as does my 90 year old Dad.
Robert Sheppard
robertsheppard@sympatico.ca

January 2009. I just found your post today. We have traced my family back to Thomas and Mary Garnett who moved to N.B. from England in 1818 and founded Garnett Settlement. There was a huge family reunion sometime around 1987 that my parents attended. I just received, from my Dad, a copy of The Garnett History that was compiled by family and given to everyone at the reunion. It has complete genealogy back to Thomas Garnett's father and also has every name listed who are buried in the Garnett Settlement Cemetery (that Thomas Garnett donated land for). You can contact me at robertsheppard@sympatico.ca

Two of my cousins and I are in the process of building family tree website. My mother's maiden name was Moore.

I hope to hear from you

I'm wondering if you have come across any connections with my Garnett ancestors. I have been able to trace them back to two brothers, Thomas and William GARNETT, both born Ashurst, Kent, England around 1819 and 1820. William later married Harriet Saunders, and had daughters Caroline and Anne in Sevenoaks, Kent. I've not yet found the brother's parents.

Hi Aaron. What a surprise! You are my father’s cousin. My name is Ray and I and my wife Gabriella started to look for my family after we married 2005. I’m son to Claude Jr but my mother (Britta a Swedish lady) never told me who my father was so I didn´t knew until she died 1999. I didn´t lived with her either I was put in a children’s home when I was born and then in a foster family. I live in Sweden and was born 1947. I would love to have contact with you. I think you had met my father. I’m happy to tell you that I in December 2006 have found my brother Claude Garnett in New Orleans. We write e-mail often. He has really enriched my life. I can´t write more now because I have limited space to write on ancestry. Please give me your e-mail address. Answer on my e-mail asenbjork@aol.com.
I´m waiting for your answer. With love from your unknown relative Ray Asenbjork

I am looking for connections to John Garnett, and his family. John was married to Mary O'Neal - sometime around 188o-1885.
John(father) died from injuries from a fall from a trolley car, in 1903.
It appears from the 1910 census,in Philadephia, Mary had 6 children -
although only 2 were still living as of 1910, John, born
around 1886, and James born around 1891.Two girls died in infancy, Catharine and Mary.
It appears from John's death certificate he was born in England, and Mary was born in Ireland.
James died last- Feb 28, 1917, a single man, although I haven't been able to find a death record - this information I obtained from Fernwood Cemetery.

*Jeremiah Garnett (KY)

Son: *Robert Calvin Garnett (b. Nov. 20, 1820, KY--d. Virginia)

Sons: *Virgil Alexander Garnett (b.1865, VA), Robert Calvin Garnett Jr. (b. 1867, VA)

Persons asterisked are my grandfathers. Does anyone know if this line has any confederate roots? My grandfather Virgil moved to Alabama and came back to Virginia. Is anyone else related to this branch of Garnetts?

Ann Garnett / John Kinsley

Looking for information on the marriage of John Kinsley and Ann Garnett (spelling of both Ann and Garnett varies) - as well as info on previous generations to them. Both were most likely born C. 1815 and hailed from somewhere in England. They may have come to Canada and eventually died here (no information can be found). They are my 4th (or so) great-grandparents. All suggestions welcome!

Has anyone come across a book of this title? Does anyone have a copy or know where one can be consulted?

According to a book I am reading about four North Country Families, the book 'Garnetts Galore' was edited by Thomas Anthony Garnett and produced privately in 1975. It was based on the work of William G Garnett of Clitheroe in 1913.

Hey Robert,

Sorry i did not go to the family reunion in 1987. There was another a few years later that i did go to though. What is your dad's name? You can contact our cousin Rhonda as she has done so much research on our family tree. If she is unable to help you, she sure can point you in the right direction. Her email address is rhonda_in_ns@hotmail.com. I wish you the best of luck in your search. Let me know if you need anything more.
Ann Garnett
ago_km@hotmail.com

Hi There

My great grandmother was Alice Fay Garnett - she married Joseph Arthurs in 1898. I live in BC so do not have access to any real archival records other than what I can access online and can't seem to be able to track Alice Fay's parents or further back. I am interested in learning any insight on the generations preceeding her and her line of descant from Thomas Garnett of Garnett Settlement.

Also Sue I noticed that you were doing research on your father's family Cole. I am also a Cole (there are thousands of us). My Cole line can trace distance relatives to Upper New York state - Syracuse.

Please reply back to jennmc@telus.net.

Thanks for help on this.
