Garnham family from Boulge/Debach area

I have an Alfred Garnham, who was born in Clopton (as per 1851 census) but I believe was christened in the Baptist Church, Grundisburgh on 13 Sep 1827. According to 'Familysearch' his parents were William Garnham (this concurs with census records) & Emma Overton (not confirmed as 1851 census shows William Garnham a widower).
Can anyone with access to Debach/Boulge/Clopton parish records verify the marriage of William & Emma? Also, I would like to trace William Garnham's parentage - born in Debach somewhere between 1803-1811 (various ages given on censuses)

John & Maria Garnham from Debach, Suffolk

On the 1841 census I found John & Maria Garnham with 4 children - Eliza (15), Abraham (15), John (12) & Emma (10). I have located their christenings in Debach as well as 2 other older daughters - Mary (1819) & Sarah (1820). However I am unable to find the marriage of John & Maria - should be around 1818 - can anybody help?

If you are looking for information on the name its self (as opposed to specific people or ancestors), I was once told a story about this by my grandfather (R T Garnham b.1930s), although I have no evidence to corroborate this.

My family is from Essex, but can be traced back to an emigrant from Norfolk in the early 1800s. I was told many years ago that the family originated from Norfolk in the 1600/1700s but that the name its self was a derivation of the French 'guerre nom' or 'war name', and that the family was so named because of their fighting reputation.

Sadly, I have no idea whether this is true or merely a romantic tale!

Re Hannah Garnham

Hi I wonder if someone could help me please. I am trying to trace the parents of Hannah Garnham who would be my 5x great grandmother. She married Abraham Dew at Bradfield St George in Suffolk on 16th April 1749.I have been unable to find a baptism record for her but would imagine her date of birth would be around 1728. I wonder if anyone could possibly do a look up at the records office to advise if the father's name is listed on the records for her marriage.
Thanks so much
Sally

Hi Belinda
Thanks for your email and I will try and give you as much detail as I can. At the moment I am staying in Kent until next Thursday [unless my son throws me out earlier !!]but I can probably look at some of my records that I have stored on my computer at home.
My late hubby's line are the Garnhams starting with Samuel Garnham born Botesdale in 1796 who married Elizabeth Barrs [Barse, Barve, Burrs, etc] of Redgrave.
Eliza was born 1821 in Rickinghall, Suffolk. She was a servant to William Prentice [he is a widower with children].[info from census of 1851]. Eliza and William produced three children before they wed in 1854. [Samuel is shown as her father on the marriage certificate albeit he died in about 1835].
I won't type any more Belinda in case I get it wrong so hang on until I get back to Norfolk on Thursday.
Kind regards
Veronica [Ronnie] Nimmo

William Garnham [born 1825 and brother to Eliza
Hi Veronica
Apologies for this message out of the blue - I just found this Garnhams thread through a Google search.

I am interested in your reference to a marriage between William Prentice and Eliza Garnham in June Qtr 1854 at South Lopham as I am researching this couple. My query is, how do you know that this Eliza Garnham is the sister of James, son of Samuel and Elizabeth? Is her father's name on the marriage certificate - my certificate is on order!

The reason I ask is that William Prentice is I believe my great great great grandfather. Through baptism transcriptions online I have found Eliza as the single mother of my great great grandfather John Garnham and his siblings. They are all listed on the censuses with William Prentice as their father and an Eliza Garnham living with them as a servant (in 1851 she is 'housekeeper as wife'). I'm certain that William is the father of Eliza's children as they use the Garnham surname and the Prentice one at different times in their lives. It is easy to assume that William marries the Eliza he has lived with for several years in 1854, but the birthplaces of the Elizas on the census just don't add up. In 1841 William Prentice and Eliza Garnham both say they are born Norfolk, in 1851 the Eliza living with William says she is born Rickinghall, Suffolk, but the Eliza who is a pauper widow on the 1861 (William Prentice I believe died 4th Qtr 1855) records her birthplace as Ely, Cambridgeshire. This Eliza is head of household and mother of the children still living with her that were recorded as William's children on earlier censuses. But the birth place is too much of a sticking point for me to ignore and there is no evidence that the Eliza living with William and the children before was the children's mother. I'm aware that until 1836 Rickinghall Inferior was a parish within the Diocese of Ely, but I think I may be trying to bend the facts to suit my own interests if I say that explains it...

I'm not sure if I can ever be certain if my two Elizas are the same person, and if they're not, which is my ancestor's mother and who are her parents?! If you have any more information that can solve this riddle I would be very happy to add Samuel and Elizabeth Garnham to my tree as my Eliza's parents!

Best wishes
Belinda

Good afternoon

For what it's worth my Gt.Grandfather was a Boatsman in Ipswich Docks called ARTHUR GARNHAM, who lived at 18 Back Hamley Ipswich, Suffolk. Apparently a legend on the docks, employing many of his children as Boatsman on the docks in the days of nepotism. I believe he had a nickname- NACTION JACK- Not sure when he was born, but his wife was Ellen (who died 7/8/1923 aged 54 year) My grandad George Arhur Garnham worked with him on the docks during the 20's and 30's

Alastair Young of Felixstowe, Suffolk, England

I'm also tracking down Garnhams from Ipswich, Suffolk. In particular James Garnham born about 1812, arrived Australia approximately 1839 and probably paid for his own passage as there is no documentation indicating he is convict or assisted passenger. There are so many James Garnhams from Ipswich that I am going to try to work it out by a process of elimination. If you have any James Garnhams in your family tree I would be sincerely grateful to hear about the family groups, even if they are not mine. Jennifer

Hi Kathryn,
Just got back from my Slimming Class and found your message re The Garnhams. Yes, we are on the same wavelength here. My [late husband David Nimmo] line starts from Samuel and David's grandmother was Selina Garnham [born out of wedlock 1878 to Elizabeth Garnham [born 1853 Hopton by Thetford and died 1883 Bury St. Edmunds Hospital, Suffolk from I believe T.B.]
William Garnham Married Mary Anne [possibly nee BLACKBOURNE]She was born 1831 and died 1867 Hopton by Thetford and married about 1852.She bore William Garnham the following children:- Elizabeth [as mentioned previously above]1853 - 1883
Samuel born 1855 died ?
Mary Anne born 1858 - died?
Henry born 1863 - died 1883 [three months after his sister Elizabeth as mentioned above - also from T.B.]
Catherine born 1864 - died ?
Hannah born 1865 - died ?
Third and final wife was one Sophia, nee KIDD born 1825 Garboldisham
It is interesting that Catherine [born 1864] was also known as Kate.
3rd wife Sophia died 1902 in Thetford Union Workhouse of "Senile Decay".
William who was born at Rickinghall died 6th August 1894 aged 69 years of "Old Age". [How times have changed].
I have about 19 pages of these Garnhams plus Birth/Death/Marriage Certificates. I'd be pleased to either send you copies [if you permit me to have your address] or I could type out the 19 pages for you. Please let me know Kathryn.
I often go to the Norfolk Archives but don't get much info there as most of these villages [apart from Thetford where my husband and his family joriginated]are in Suffolk.
Anyway, being a typist all my life I can tap away to my hearts content but I might bore you with any more.
I will say bye for now and I will re-read your message and see if I can send you a bit more info.
Kind regards from me in Sheringham, Norfolk, UK
Veronica Nimmo
Hi,

I have a William Garnham b abt 1824 (father Samuel and mother Elizabeth) who was married to Jane Marley and had a son Frederick 18th June 1846. Jane died abt 1850. I am just waiting for some certificates to confirm Williams other two marriages as I live in Australia and only have census records etc to go on.In the 1841 census I can find only Elizabeth and the children, no Samuel. Frederick married Elizabeth Wiseman 12th August 1866. Their son Alfred was born 8th January 1868 and arrived in Australia in 1889. Alfred married Ada Grace Davis and they had 12 children. One of these children Cecil Robert was my husbands grandfather. I was wondering if my William is the same William you have in you family history.

Regards
Kathryn Garnham

Hi Kimberley
I have found a James Garnham in my 'tree'. He was the son of Samuel Garnham [b. 1793 Hopton by Thetford]and Elizabeth Garnham [born 1796 Botesdale]. James was born in 1818 together with his twin brother William but sadly both died in 1818. So they were not very old.
In 1822 Samuel and Elizabeth had another son who they called James and he lived til 1897 aged 75 years.
A sister to James - Eliza [born about 1816?] married a William Prentice on 9th April 1854 at South Lopham. They produced a son James in 1843 and he died 1877 aged 34.
Don't know if any of the above is relevant to your Garnham family and if not, happy hunting.
Regards
Veronica Nimmo
Norfolk UK

Researching the Edgar line from Suffolk in England, I descend from John Edgar and Lucy (nee?), I live in Canada, would like to hear from people researching the Edgar line in Suffolk. In the 1841 census John Edgar is married to Lucy (nee?), their daughter Louisa (born Stratford Essex) and husband Francis Dexter lived with them in London. According to the 1851 census John (senior) was born in Wetherden Suffolk 1793 and Lucy in Ipswich 1775, and their son John Edgar (junior) says he was born in Suffolk (town unknown).

The probably wont be of any interest to you at all but tonight I researched the derivation of my surname and came across your request. I know very little of my ancestry because my grandfather was very secretive!! however, I have 2 brothers Robert and Martin born 1959 and 1964 respectively . My father was Robert born 1936 and my grandfather was Sidney born around 1909. I believe there is a connection some where in Derbyshire but I have no further information about this. sorry, hope this helps!!!!!!!

Dear Mark

I was "given" your name, along with Robert Napthine, as being the "gurus" of the Garnham line! What a build up!

I have resisted the temptation to merely use the efforts of others and have been researching my family roots. My mother was Winifred Garnham. Tracing back her line I get to James Garnham & Alice Fenn (married 1613 in Ipswich). This trail is, I think, reasonably secure. I have seen most of the documents that relate to the chain.

In discussions with Robert Napthine we think that James is in fact written into the Gosbeck records incorrectly and that his baptism is one of the two Thomas Garnham 1571 & 1572.

I have seen, and translated the will of Thomas Garnham, yeoman farmer, of Gosbeck who died in 1591. He had five children named in his will - Thomas (eldest), James, William, Martha and Eleanor (at least I think that is her name as the writing is shocking).

His eldest son, Thomas, is I think the father of James Garnham who married Alice Fenn. Thomas was married to an Elizabeth and produced a series of children, including two Thomas's as previously mentioned.

Sadly the Gosbeck records have missing pages from 1574 to 1580. How annoying and inconvenient!

My e mail address is gardner155@btinternet.com My tree is on Excel as I find it easier to handle. If you contact me with a forwarding e mail I will send them to you, as I can some of the wills that I have. They can be scanned and sent as attachments if you wish.

Have you any info that might shed further light on the 1the century darkness!

Best wishes

Mike Gardner

Hi I am looking for a way to either contact or findout some information about William L Garnham. he was born in 1926 in cheshire and married somebody or other Beck in Jun of 1958. I have not found any children from this marriage and I was wondering if anyone knew of these people. His parents were William G Garnham and Freda Leal.

Thanks
Alison

Hi

I have just picked up your message and its great to see there is a link between our families and that your father can remember Joshua. I hadnt realised he used to go up to Scotland, although there are quite a few stories of him just taking off and disappearing for weeks on end. I know he used to visit barton Mills in Scotland. he was certainly a bit of a character as far as I can gather (not always in the positive sense either)

My direct email is hadd27@ntlworld.com. If you get in touch we can swap further stories, details and photos

Rose

Carol,

I have hundreds of Ruddocks, you'll need to be a bit more specific. Mine originate from North Lopham in Norfolk and I have a large number in the Bury St Edmunds region in Suffolk. You can e-mail me on simonrw@bigfoot.com.

Simon Ruddock-West

James Garnham of Barton Mills born around 1840-1845 son of Robert Garnham was my fathers great grandfather .He married at least twice and his son John( from his marriage to Margaret Ann Gatiss(Gaters) in 1881 was possibly bigamous as his first wife was poss still alive, he lied about his age on his marriage certificate) was my fathers grandfther>
John and his brother Robert moved to Scotland with their mother .My father remembers meeting Joshua who was descibed as his brother (actually his half brother)when he used to come up to scotland from Beamish
