Hello Kristin,

I too am searching for Joseph Garrow (Garreau) who moved to Helena, Montana in, I believe, the 1880's. He was orginally from New York state, but may have been born in Canada. He was married to Hermine "Minnie" Shatraw (Chartrand). I do not know if they were married before or after he moved to Montana, but I do know that she also was from New York, probably via Canada. He died as a young man with four surviving children in Helena, Montana, I think about 1899.

If any of this information might relate to what you have I certainly will be most appreciative to hear from you. I have one photograph of him taken as a young man with his friend and brother-in-law Edward Emmanuel Shatraw.

Sincere regards,
Del

Do you have any info on Mary Copple, who was a sister of Barbara (Copple Drumm) and Susan (Copple Parker)? Mary was married to Isaac Howery, and died young. He left their son, John Braxton Howery, to be raised by Mary's parents, Abraham and Sarah Copple. They lived between Bartlett and Thurman near Pleasant Valley School. We don't even know where Mary is buried.
Mary Howery
Thurman, Iowa

Check on the Cheyenne Registry of the BIA there are some french / indian Garreau on that list. You are correct Garreau is a french surname. You can trace it back into the 1600 france. It is almost as common as Smith. Alotof French trappers came south from canada with that name. Some of the Garreau came from the east coast and some came from the Louisanna. Alot changed there names to Garreans, Garrean and gerrens. Good luck ! Monte Garreans - mgarre01@hotmail.com

My Great Grandmother was Martha Hannah Garee 1867-1943.) Her parents were Louisa Pray (died July 1901) and John Garee (1821-1890). They are all buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, LeRoy, McLean Co., IL. I believe there were 11 children. Martha married John Calvin Seniff. Does this help you? I have not been able to find the parents of John Garee or Louisa Pray Garee. There are still Garee's and Garee descendants in LeRoy, IL, but I have not been able to contact them.

Hello, long time no hear. My computer crashed, so I am in the process of getting it back online. Thank you very much for the information, I appreciate it. To answer your question, Roy, Harry, Mary, they are all the family of William F. Garrens. Mary Edmisten was William's wife and Roy & Harry were their sons. William F. is buried with his daughter who died young in the Sciota Cemetery just south of Union, Nebraska. The rest of the family and grandchildren and such are buried in the Union West Cemetery in Union, Nebraska. By the way, Union West is the same place that Clifford Sir Carl Garrean and Mazie are buried. I am interested in all of the Berry family and descendants. Any info that you are willing to share is greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you again soon,
Cousin Steve

Thank you for the where abouts on chuck's grandparents. Greatly appreciated. We live in Twin Falls, ID, but we own our own trucking company so we are out on the road more than home it seems. Chuck's dad Charles Garrean Sr. passed away in Twin Falls, ID a few years ago so chuck really doesn't know alot of information so every little find is truely wonderful. I know he has family living in Council Bluffs, IA and he's dad was from the Lincoln area. Do you know off hand when they passed away. You know this really is funny. I've been working on my own family for a few years & the other day Chuck says "do you think we could find anything on me?" So we called his mom got their names, logged on & there was your conversations with Monte. Now i have so many questions i don't know where to start. So will take it slow I guess. what was mazies maiden name? And if you know any of their kids maybe we can start connecting loose ends. Iknow a couple of his brthers but i think only one is still living. Thank you so much for the help.

I would like to start by saying it is nice to meet you. I visit Clifford & Mazie's grave two or three times a year. I actually still live in Bellevue, NE. Clifford and Mazie were in fact husband & wife. I would love to share info with you that could benefit both of us. I have a database of over 10,000 family members and am always willing to share. Hope to hear from you again soon.

Cousin, Steve Garrean Jr.

We own an audiovisual production company, providing services mostly to corporate events. We also do some work on concert tours.

We haven't talked to Monte in a long time either, but I know he stays pretty busy with the railroad.
Wow, how weird to drop in on a conversation like this... I just did a Google search on Garreans, and found this thread.

I am also a Garreans, and Monte is my uncle. I am not involved in any way with researching my ancestry, although I had heard that Monte was doing so... Hey there, Unca Monte!

But I thought I'd at least drop a line and say hello from yet another Garreans. Monte is the brother of my father, Leonard Lanceford Garreans. Perhaps I'll submit more to this conversation when I get some time... it's actually quite interesting!

Sorry Monte,
I have been extremely busy lately, but I am very happy to share some more info with you. Let's see, I'm not sure where to start. My mother and father are Steve Garrean Sr. & Julieann Denise Oldenburg. Steve Garrean Sr. was born to Harold Paul Garrean & Viola Study. Harold Paul Garrean born to Charles Garrean & Ressa Wilbur, Charles is Ernest Lanford's brother. Charles & Ernest Lanford Garrean were born to Jacob Garrean & Ella Howery. Jacob Garrean was born to David Garrean & Margaret McCready. David Garrean was born to Noah Garrean & Catherine "Katie" Copple. Noah was the Garrean who changed the spelling of the last name originally, our name is derived from "Garren", but when Noah entered the Army, they mispelled his last name "Garrean", and he decided to stick with it, thus creating our versions of the name. I have so much more information including dates/locations/marriage dates, I also have our family traced all the way back to the first one over from Germany. If you would like more of my information that is fine, but if you could I would like more info on your branch of the family, like your aunts & uncles, brothers & sisters, mother with maiden name, dates, locations....if you could help me there, I will share all my info with you.

Cousin,
Steve Garrean Jr.

Steve, Whats up? Sorry I took so long getting back to you.I work for the railroad and I`m out of town alot. I had a gut feeling when you said your grandfather (charles) lived in Nebraska that we were related some how.So our fathers are cousins, My grandfather (Ernest) is your great uncle and your grandfather (Charles) is my great uncle. That makes us second cousin, is that correct? Yes, I would be interested in any other information you have on the family. Well cousin IM glad to know you! I`d like to keep in touch and maybe meet you someday when i`m up your way. I still have many reatives in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area. Later Monte

It is very funny that you refer to us as cousins, because
that is exactly what we are. You mentioned that your
father was Earnest Lyle, well Earnest Lyle is my grandfather's first cousin. Ernie and Mable were my grandfather's aunt and uncle. Noah garrean is in fact your
grandpa Ernest's great-grandfather. Noah Garrean and Catharine Copple had David Garrean who married Margaret McCready, they had Jacob Garrean who married Ella Howery.
Jacob and Ella had Ernest Garrean and my great grandfather
Charles. If you'd like, I have tons of information on your
family that I am willing to share with you. By the way, on
an interesting note, about twice a year, I visit your grandfather's grave when I go to visit Charles, David, Margaret, etc. They are all buried in the same cemetary.
It is true that some of Jacob and Ella's children started spelling their names with an 's' on the end. There are a few other spelling variations that I can inform you of if you would like.

Write back Cousin,
Steve Garrean Jr.

I have a noah garrean on a list, but don`t know for sure if I am related to him. Also some of the names on my list might spell thier last name without the "S" sinse these lists were published.
I too have family that spell their name with an 's' on the
end. It's funny you say that your family was from Iowa and
Nebraska. I currently live in Nebraska, but my grandpa moved
his family here from Iowa. Please share some of your ancestors that were from Iowa, there may still be a connection here. Some of my ancestors from Iowa are: Noah Garrean and his wife Catharine "Katie" Copple. Noah was a
son of George Garren and Ruth Faine. The period that these
people were alive would be early to mid 1800's. If either
of these couples appear in your ancestory, that is a definate hit, but still share some of your ancestors from IA, because there could be some other connection.

Steve Garrean Jr.

Whats up Steve As I spell my name "Garreans", about half of our family spell it like yours, with out the "S". As I am of French decent I have traced our family back to the 1600`s in France to the Garreau name. I have actually found cases of relatives changing thier names from Garreau to Garreans during cesuses taking in the 1800`s and also a caseof a confederate soldier from Louisana during the civil war.Alphonse Garreau to garreans. Most of my immeditate family came out of Nebraska and Iowa in the late 1800`s. But a few were on the east coast and in Canada. Now were are spred out all over the United States, coast to coast. Now if you are of Irish decent you are most likely of Garren ansestry, because its a irish name. Good luck, let me know if you find anything new!
Response to Carolyn Garreau:I have traced the name Garreans (present day U.S.A.), TO Garrean (present U.S.A), Which have evolved from Garreau (early american & Canada), and France 1500 to present. One of the frist to change was Alphonse Garreau, changed to Alphonse Garrean while serving in the Confederate Army 1862,in a New Orleans,LO. regiment. If you or any one else has any more information to share, please post or E-MAIL me. Monte Garreans MGarreans2@webtv.net

Albert Garreau mentioned was the brother of my G grandfather. The Gareau line has been well researched - I do have some information gaps.

Do you know the exact death dates of Albert's parents who were Francois (Frank) Garreau and Marie (Mary) Rouleau? I have a 1915 year, Benton county Indiana. Lucia's birth certificate spelled the last name as Garrow.

Thank you, Lyle Garreau
We are an old GARREAU family from Burgundy, France....been there from the 16th century... (Auxerre, Joigny, Champlay.....)
Several men went away at each generation, and never returned....Might you been one of their descendants ?

Marianne SEPTIER GARREAU

Hi Monte, saw your posting and was very facinated by your name. I am of the Gareau/Garreau family line from France and Quebec and then onto St Lawrence County, NY, with a dit of St Onge or Saintonge attached. I am having a hard time finding my Joseph Gareau dit Saintonges birth and parents. What can you tell me about your surname, such as where you originated from and what your family line is. Meanwhile if your curious as to mine take a look at www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/e/c/Kristin-M-Decare.
Kristin
