Susannah Lightfoot, Berks Co., Penn. marries Unknown Garrigues

I am looking for any information leading to the discovery of the name of the husband, Mr. Garrigues, who married Susannah Lightfoot. Susannah is listed in her father's will as Susannah Garrigues.

Susannah Lightfoot Garrigues, b. February 26, 1783, Berks Co., Pennsylvania (or Northumberland, Columbia Counties etc., possibly Maiden Creek, or Roaring Creek or Catawissa Pennsylvania), daughter of Thomas Lightfoot and Hannah Wright (old Quaker families).

married probably between 1803 and 1820 a Mr. {Unknown} Garrigues, probably in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Mr. {Unknown} Garrigues was probably born 1770-1783 in Pennsylvania.

I would think some of you Garrigues researchers would have the answer. I would appreciate hearing about any Garrigues living on the frontier during this time period.
Hello,

I was hoping to find information about a relative of mine - Johann Gotfried Nestler. He was bound to Samuel Garrigues Sr. for five years and six months as an indentured servant. He arrived in Philadelphia on August 25th, 1773. Does anyone have any information pertaining to Mr. Samuel Garrigues' indentured servants?

DNA Project: Looking for Southern Branch Descendents!

All,

We need at least two more participants from the Southern Branch of the Garrigues/Garrigus/Gargis family as descended from Matthew Garrigus of Halifax County, NC (circa 1760-1790).

This DNA project can offer us conclusive proof that this branch descends from the Pennsylvania Garrigues family. This would be valuable knowledge as the documentation in the early years of this line is scant or non-existant.

The ideal candidates would be male lineal descendents with a pretty solidly documented line back to Matthew Garrigus. However, we have the option to test any descendent (female or non-lineal male) through a more expensive mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) method. The former costs $104 per participant after shipping. The mtDNA kit would run somewhere to the tune of $200 if I am not mistaken. The best approach is to mitigate the cost by having a larger group take up a collection to sponsor a smaller group of volunteers.

If you are interested in participating or know someone who might be please contact me and pass this message along.

Many thanks in advance.

Garrigues Family of Jamaica

All,

Recently, I came across a Garrigues in the 1930 U.S. Census for Jackson County, MO that was born in Jamaica. His name was William B. Garrigues and he was born abt. 1882 in Jamaica. His father was Jamaican and his mother was Canadian. William married a woman named Annie in 1907 (presumably in Jamaica). Annie was born abt. 1884 in Jamaica. Her father was Scottish and her mother Jamaican.

William B. Garrigues immigrated to the U.S. in 1918 and Annie and their children came over in 1921. Their children were:

Hugh (son) b. 1908 in Jamaica
Jessie (dau) b. 1911 in Jamaica
Joyce (dau) b. 1912 in Jamaica
Edna (dau) b. 1914 in Jamaica
Mary (dau) b. 1916 in Jamaica
Ivor (son) b. 1918 in Jamaica
Frances (dau) b. 1927 in Missouri

There are many descendants of the Jamaican family Garriques (with a "Q") living in the U.S. today. It is very possible that William B. Garrigues (with a "G") and family are related to them as well. I'd love to recruit lineal male descendants from this family for our DNA project as they may find that they are related to the descendants of Matthieu and Susanne (née Rochet) Garrigues.

Just keepin' you in the loop...

Bob Garrigus

Hello all,

Has anyone ever seen or heard anything about the original ancestors of the US Garrigues family having immigrated through Switzerland? (My initial question is into which family this ancestor might tie but first things first.)

I am in contact with two researchers (Laguarigue) who claim that one of their forebears in France did a great deal of research and believed that the Garrigues family in the US was descended from a protestant minister that fled to Switzerland.

This has several similarities to the normal family stories but the Swiss connection is new for me.

Does anyone have any background on this story?

Any information would be appreciated.

Bob Garrigus
rgarrigus@hotmail.com

For those interested,

I have just posted a transcription of the bible of Abner Garrigues/Garrigus to my site at:

http://www.garrigus-family.com

Look under "Documents".

This bible was presented to Abner by his father David Garrigues, Sr. of Morris County, NJ. This David was a son of Jacob Garrigues, Sr. It is interesting in that the bible was presented to Abner in 1812 and the surname was spelled "Garrigues" for both Abner and David.

Take care and happy hunting!

Bob Garrigus

Garrigues vs George/Georges

Hey folks,

Here is a theory for you:

On a side research note...

I have recently discovered a number of previously undocumented people in Philadelphia by the surname Garrigues. One example is a man named Conrad Garrigues who is listed in directories in the mid 1700s. I also found another reference in orphans court records for a man named Wilhelm Garrigus.

As it turns out, I believe from my research that a number of people by the German names of George and Georges were mistakenly listed in records under the name Garrigues and Garrigus. The name George is pronounced "gar-ig" in German and Georges would be pronounced "gar-i-gus". The French pronounciation of Garrigues is "gar-ig" and was also often mispronounced as "gar-i-gus". This is the probable reason that these people would be mistakenly listed with our family.

Therefore, it is very possible that some of the people we have assumed as relatives actually fall into the German family (families) named George or Georges. I believe that one notable example is Abraham Garrigues (b. 1722) who I believe has been incorrectly listed as a child of immigrants Matthieu and Susanne (née Rochet) Garrigues. In Lutheran church records these same German families are listed under the surname spelled Gergos, Gorges, Gerges and several other variants but never under the French spelling Garrigues or Garrigus.

I have always found it curious that the Matthew(s) of NC would go by the name Matthias as this has a decidedly more German feel.

This is just a theory but I find the notion very interesting.

Comments or observations?

Bob G.
John Garrigues (son of Samuel Garrigues, Sr.)

To anyone interested,

Today I posted a transcription of a very interesting letter from Continental Congress Papers at the National Archives. This letter dated June 17, 1779 is from Colonel Lewis Nicola to President of the Continental Congress John Jay and presents intelligence from John Garrigues on the order of battle of the British Southern campaign in South Carolina. Take a look to learn more about this fascinating story of the Revolutionary War experiences of this Garrigues ancestor. This is a short, never before published anecdote so I think you'll enjoy it.

The letter is contained in the "Documents" section of my site at:

http://www.garrigus-family.com/johnpow.html

Take care and happy hunting!

Bob Garrigus
rgarrigus@hotmail.com
<http://www.garrigus-family.com>
1st wife of Francis Garrigues identified

All,

In conducting an exhaustive search of the Original Records of Christ Church in Philadelphia I found an entry for the marriage of Francis Garrigues and his first wife Ann in 1727. Ann's maiden name was Willson [sic]. Francis' surname was spelled phonetically and I have never seen it indexed in other sources. I will post all these records ASAP to my site at:

http://www.garrigus-family.com

They are quite interesting and reveal some new information on the family in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Inn

Yes, the Inn was the Prince Eugene Inn on Second Street. It was owned by Matthieu (Matthew) "The Emigrant" Garrigues. Per Garrigues website, he was known to own it in 1726. (My husband is descended from Matthew, Samuel, William, William, William...). The website page where they mention the Inn is: www.deepeddy.com/~cwg/Garrigues/6/x/p/4296.html
