Re: David Garrigus, NJ Butler County OH

Hello,

I was wondering if you ever came across the burial location for David Garrigus in Butler County, Ohio.

I recently came across a newspaper article in the Journal News (Hamilton, Ohio) from the 26 Oct 1971 edition written about the pioneer cemeteries of Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio which dealt with two cemeteries which are now city parks in Hamilton, Ohio.

(Now this is what I understood from the article so if errors are made someone who is familiar with Hamilton feel free to correct.)

Fourth Ward Park "Aka Hamilton Cemetery"
First Ward Park (Sutherland Park) "Aka Rossville burial ground.

Now what caught my attention was the names listed on a "Journal of a meeting of the citizens of Hamilton" meeting was held at the courthouse 23 Aug 1823 included in this list are Jeptha Garrigus and Jacob Garrigus and also Robert & Jackson Ayres. The reason for the meeting was to raise money for the inclosing of "Hamilton Burying Ground"

Apparently in the 1870's what is now First Ward Park the city buried the headstones 18 inches below the surface and it became a park.

So with that said I am now curious if a list of people was kept who were buried in both of the above mentioned burial grounds which are now city parks. I think the fact that Jeptha Garrigus's name is listed as a concerned citizen for the maintenance of one of these cemeteries is a strong clue to the location of his father David Garrigus.

Anyways I just wanted to see how successful you may/may not have been trying to locate David Garrigus burial location.

Regards,
Robert M.

Re: AL, GA Garrigus'

Joel-good day. I don't know the answer to your Query. I do know that the Clay co. Garrigus's are from the Silas Garrigus that call into Talladega Al. and operated a steel mill. When looking thru these Al. Garrigus, be careful. There is three diff. lines and they all use William as one of the base names. There are (I know of) four William Henry Garrigus/Gargus in Al. between 1800 and 1900. One is in Lawrence Co.;one in Talladega Co.( son of David who in son of Silas Garrigus of N.J.); and Two in Blount/St. Clair Counties. The Two in Blount/St.Clair are my Garrgius/Gargus line. They are out of the Pa. Garrigues's. Hope this help and don't confuse. I will give info that I have if you would like it. Mel Wootan

My husband has the same name (Henry C. Garrigus Jr.) His middle name is Clay. We know very little about the Garrigus family. Henry's dad and mother Ruthann were married for a couple on years after Henry's birth, and there was a separation of many years after. Henry Sr. died around 1999.

Just interesting the names are the same. Apologize no seemingly connection at this point.

Sincerely,
Laura Garrigus

Are you related to Mathias Garrigus(1875-1948)? He lived around Summmit, Arkansas. His father was James (1854-1919). Mathias was a half-brother to my great-grandfather, Noah Edward (1894-1971).

Mathias married Letha Riley (1883-1975). They had Freeman (1900-1985), Leona (1900-), Raymond (1905-), Willie May (1908-1986), and Frankie (1913-1992).

Freeman was a minister. He married Oma Hampton.

Willie Mae married Loys Hampton.

Frankie married Albert Hampton. (yeah, all the Hampton's are related).

Hi, Robert:
My interest is in the "Woodford McDowell" portion of this gentlemen's name. (WMcD.G was named for a distant cousin that I will assume his parents held in high esteem.) The book is American Men & Women of Science, 13th edition, NY, R. R. Bowker Co., 1976. I have never seen this book. Now that you tell me that there were three generations of Woodford McDowell Garrigus's, I wonder which one is denoted in the book. The WMcD.G that I found online died in Ramsey Co., MN, Oct 3, 1923 and my ancestor, Woodford McDowell died in Washington, D. C. 190?.

Hi Susan,

Woodford McDowell Garrigus is one of the descendents of Matthieu & Susanne (née Rochet) Garrigues. There were/are actually three men by the name. The first was Woodford McDowell Garrigus, Sr. (b. December 26, 1894 d. October 03, 1983). He had a son Woodford McDowell Garrigus, Jr who in turn had Woodford McDowell Garrigus III. The latter two men are likely alive so I won't post their information online.

I am not familiar with the Who's Who article on Woodford McDoell Garrigus and would love a copy or transcript for the family genealogy corpus. I'd gladly reimburse for copies and effort involved. My address is 9579 Sea Shadow, Columbia, MD 21046.

All the best!

Bob Garrigus

Slias, My great great grandmother was Mahalia Lackey. She was my grandmother Patteron"s mother. She buried in a country cemetry ,Providence Baptist Church which is in Clay,county...I now live in Talladega, Al. and own the property that was the original forge that Silas and David worked. Then local history says that later they owned a forge on Fain creek and Silas also built a forge in Jennifer. One can now take a 4-wheeler to the dam and lake that was built for the Fain creek forge...My phone # is 1-800-362-2827 ext.135 if you care to talk to me.. Many thanks Hugo

Hello,

I have recently acquired photocopies of 21 letters written by Horace Garrigus. Most were written by Horace during the Civil War but there are one or two written previous as well as one or two by his siblings. I have posted transcribed versions of these letters at:

http://www.garrigus-family.com/horaceletters.html

Enjoy!

Bob Garrigus

Hi Heather,

The supposed birth date range and location you have for Benjamin Garrigus (spouse of Jane Simpson) is probably not correct based on census information. Based on his age as given in the US Census (1850 and after) he was born about 1803 in NC. The claim that he was born in Halifax County, NC is not known to be true...nor is the identification of his father as Matthew. Descendents of this branch of the Garrigus family have proven, through DNA testing, to be directly related to the Lagarrigue family of Martinique and not to the Garrigues family of Philadelphia and New Jersey as is often claimed. For more information see:

http://www.garrigus-family.com

Benjamin Garrigus Family Related to Lagarrigue of Martinique

Rose,

Here's yet another revelation! Our latest Garrigues/Garrigus/Gargus DNA results are in and they indicate that your line of the Southern Branch as descended from Benjamin and Jane (née Simpson) Garrigus is not related to the Garrigues of Philadelphia. However, they returned a perfect genetic match with the participant from Martinique who traces his ancestry back to the family of Lagarrigue of Thèze in Béarn. This family is very large and many of them live on Martinique today. They have been celebrating a family reunion on the island since the early 1800s.

These results show us that genealogy mistakes have been made with regards to the Southern Garrigues/Garrigus/Gargus lines and that there were at least two Garrigues family groups living in the Virginia and/or North Carolina regions in the late 18th century. They also show that, although you may not be descended from Matthieu Garrigues, you are descended from a noble French family.

This just gets more and more interesting!

For more information see:
http://www.garrigus-family.com/dnaresults.html

All the best!

Dear Mr. Molliston,

Just saw your post reply to Robert Garrigus about Silas Garrigus. I've done a lot of research on the Garrigus' of Talladega Co., AL. Silas David Garrigus is my GGG Grandpa. He was born in New Jersey, as was his son, David. His Son, David Garrigus, was not from Scotland. The census you refer to is in error. Why his birthplace was listed as Scotland is unknown to me. It could be because he was aYankee and the civil war was in the brwing stages. My Great Grandma, Martha Ann (Garrigus) Clark, has quite a few grandchildren still living in AL, GA & FL. The Ann in the census are my Great Grandma Clark. Her grandson, Ernest Clarke, who is still living at age 93, (my cousin), told me some stories about his Uncle Silas. I have a lot of history on Silas' side of the family. I'd be happy to share. Let me know.
Joel Clark, Sr.

POW/MIA Korean War, GARRIGUS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Gibson County, Indiana as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: CHARLES N GARRIGUS
Born: Jan. 24, 1926, Caucasian
Date of loss: December 1, 1950, KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Garrigus family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
