Letter dated Jan 16, 1966
Dear Miss Hawks
Quite some time ago I wrote to Mrs. Marjorie Garinger in California and last October, I received a letter from her, saying the letter had been delayed in reaching her and she was late in answering.
I have been researching for many years on the Garinger family as it is my maternal line.
My mother was Leah Arminta Garringer (we spell it), the daughter of John Andrew Garringer and Nancy West; he, being the son of Benjamin H. Garringer born 1820 in Ohio and Sarah McCartney; then he being the son of Jacob Garringer Sr. and __________? Jacob then was the son of David Garriinger and wife Barbara________? that were living in Berkeley County West Vifginia. (At that tiem Old Dominion, Va.)
David Garringer and Barbara, his wife, were the parents of David, born 1772, who went to Fayette County Ohio. (Lame Davey) and Jacob Sr. (my ancestor), John J. Garinger born August 4 1785; and Mary Culp; Elizabeth Zenas; Madelenah Miller and Seville_______.
David Garinger, Sr., died Berkeley County West Va. in 1812 and Barbara his wife, died in 1814 (David left a will naming the children.
David Jr. came to Fairfield County Ohio; then established a home in Fayette County Ohio where they raised their family. Three of his sons, John, Alexander and Isaac, came to Randolph County, Indiana and established their home (and also the mother, who disagreed with David). Their other children stayed in Fayette County Ohio. They were David(3rd) Elizabeth and Mary.
Jacob Garringer (David's brother ) came to Ohio near Columbus and then bought land in Berlin Township, Deleware County Ohio where he is registeredin the 1830 census. Later four or five of his sons came to Jan County Indiana, settling right across the county line from David's three sons, who settled in Randolph County, INd. (and a couple decendats of each intermarried). These sons were: David, Alexander, Benjamin and Jacob Jr. and I beleive a Nathan, who was registered in a census of one of these sons. Then there was a Joh buried in Celeware County Ohio who may have been a son. There of course could have been other sons, and maybe some daughters? I have been unable to find out; or prove.
Mrs. Garinger sent me a copy of the family of John J. Garinger and Mary M's children (do you know her maiden name?) They were probably married in Berkeley County West Va. before coming to Ohio. He perhaps came about the time Jacob came. Where did they sellte?? in Ohio? Did they come to Indiana before going west; or did they go directly to Kansas.
Now David's two sons, John and Alexander Garinger went to Kansas and Missouri and I have contacted some of the descendants of Alexander Garinger but I haven't got the record of John, his brother.
I have not received any record of Mary Culp, Elizabeth Zenas, Madelenah Miller and Seville_______. I do not know whether they stayed in Berkeley County West Va; or whether they came West. Do you know?
I have records of other Garingers (spelled various ways). The record in Berkeley said Gerringer but our family use both spellings of Garinger and Garringer
I have located some other Garingers who are in Pennsylvania and part of their family came to Ohio also; and others went south and westward.
It was thought our family were Palentines and came over about mid 1700's toUSA. There are some Garringers who are or were toy makers in Germay but whether they are connected with our line or not I do not know
Have you gone into this Garinger research very deeply? I have done extentive research.
Several years ago I sent a carbon copy of some family history to a "cousin" (one of Alexander's son Daivd's lin) descendants. Whether she entered it at Utah, I do not know. Then of course I received many other records later and made another copy with a carbon. I gave the carbon copy to Mrs. Homer Garringer at Washinton Court House, Ohio for the Fayette County Garringers to use. Then sinnce that time have added many more records.
May I hear from you please concerning the Garinger famkly and its history. Perhpas we can exchange data.
Sincerely, Alice Lake Ketron (Mrs. James E. Ketron)
PS After I had written my letter and before I sent it, I decided to check my records thoroughly whcih I should have done in the first place and I found the enclosed information. Your John J. Garinger is NOT the brother of Lame Davey, and Jacob but of an entirely different family altogether, unless it proves later that they are related a agenration before with our family???? So, hones confession is good for me.
