OK Carol, I found the census or part of it anyway. It states that a Mary Garry, age 15, born about 1837 lived in Oxford County. This census was about 1852. Coincidentally, my great grandfather, Nicholas Gentleman is also shown in that same county. I am assuming they met there and moved at some point to Paris. The later census shows her married and age 23. There are other Gentleman brothers on this census living both in Oxford County and Perth, Ontario. This census is in 1861. Her children 3 of 4 born in Canada are shown on this later census also.

Is Perth close to Oxford County and also to Paris, Ontario?

I am also wondering if the name Garry is a common Irish surname. What is most difficult is that there are so many with the same first names, i.e. Mary, Bridget, William, Thomas, Michael. It makes it so hard doesn't it?
Thanks for any information you can give me.
Kathleen

I will check and get back to you. I noticed that you spelled the last name as Gary. We have 2 r's in our last name.

Carol

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I assume you were replying to my post but in any case. My great-grandmother, Mary Gary Gentleman I believe lived in Paris, Ontario and the vicinity when she was married. She married Nicholas Gentleman and 3 of her children were born in Canada. I do not know much of the Canadian area so if you know if Paris is close to your location, perhaps this is a small chance we could be related. It is a needle in a haystack though.
Thanks,
Kathleen

Garry and its 9 variations including Family Motto

In searching Ireland for my husband's family circa 1868-72, I found the following: "First, you should keep in mind that there are at least 9 variant spellings of Garry - Garry, McGarry, MacGarry, McGary, Mag Fhearadhaigh, Megary, Gary,
Magarry, and Megarry. However, Irish (Gaelic) spellings are rare in records before 1900." Then reading a board on family motto is as follows "Fear gharbh ar nait". Look how close the family motto is to the Gaelic spelling. Just thought those who are searching this family name would appreciate any information others may find.

Re: FAMILY HISTORY

While I am not a Garry descendant, I have been working on research concerning an Irish American family which had a business relationship with your Thomas J. Garry. A member of this family, Charles Gallen, operated a fish market in Bridgeport CT with Mr. Garry.
I see from my research that Mr. Garry married in Bridgeport in 1891 to Catherine Farrell and left that city for Albany sometime before 1910.
What caught my interest was his birth in Savannah GA, a fact noted in his marriage and various census records. I was able to view the 1860 census for Savannah online. I found a Patrick Garry, wife Margaret and a son John, age 7. I assume that Thomas was born shortly after? Patrick was noted as being from County Meath and his wife from Roscommon. There was a younger Garry man in town as well, then single.
I am curious if you know why he later went to Bridgeport and also why he left for Albany. The Charles Gallen noted above was a nephew (and employee) of brothers Michael and David Carey who operated an earlier fish market in Bridgeport in the same location. David Carey, in the Civil War, went to Troy NY to join a regiment there - I am assuming he had some relatives there - and Troy is near Albany. Can you shed any light on the above questions? I will share my research if you are interested
My mother was the second daughter of Matthew her name was
Doris, she passed away 12/31/2007 at 93. I was so lucky to have her for so long and I miss her love and determination, she was very active right up till the last 1 1/2 months. She would spend 4 to five months with me but did not like the heat. She was born in 1914 and was the last of Matthew children to live. I do have a faded copy of the naturalization of alien.
I am not familiar with the fulton web site but I will check it out. My email address is BBBGM9@netscape.net
My husband and I retired to Florida.
I will be able to write more at my e-mail address.

I am delighted to find a Garry cousin and one who is interested in the family history! Which daughter of Matthew is your mother? Edward Garry, Jr had three daughters. My mother was the first born in 1914. I do not have any photos of Edward, Jr, or any other Garrys. Do you have a copy of Patrick's nautralization paper? He was married to Loretta Plumb. I, too, can't find information about their daughter, Mary, past the 1850 census. Loretta died in 1857. Are you familiar with the Fulton, NY, History/postcards web site? I have found many newspapers articles on the Garrys at this site.
Where do you live? I am in Maryland near Washington, DC.
Charlotte

Edward was also my great grandfather. Matthew Gary was my
grandfather. Patrick and Martin Conway were together when they received their Naturalization of Alien back in 1858.
According to the census Patrick and Lorraine had a daughter Mary born in 1848, but she seemed to have disappeared. I remember my Mom talking about Edward Jr. Do you have any pictures I have one of Matthew. One of our cousins has a newspaper clipping of Edward I am hoping to get it one day.
Mom said Patrick came thru Canada.
I am so excited to know I have another cousin.

Patrick Garry is also my great great grandfather. When he died in 1890, he was living with his son and my great grandfather, Edward Garry. This Edward Garry had 12 children, one of whom was my Grandfather, Edward Garry, Jr.

I am, too, trying to track Patrick back to Ireland. In Clyde around the same time were two Garry sisters, also from Ireland, named Jane Garry Conway and Mary Garry Sheridan. Jane was born about 1837 and Jane about 1845. Jane's obit in 1912 said she is from County Mayo. I suspect that Patrick, Jane and Mary are from the same family in Ireland.
She came from Ireland and immigrated to Canada, married there, had 3 boys born somewhere in Canada, then the family moved to Platte County, Nebraska. Mary died in Omaha, Nebraska.

I have always been intrigued with this sad story which could never happen now (hopefully). Just a shot in the dark but I sure would love to find some connection or other information about Mary. Thanks in advance. Kathleen

Suzanne,
Thank you for the information. Are you a researcher? I have about given up on getting anything on Mary Garry, my great-grandmother. Of course, the information you sent could be her relatives, it is hard to know. I do not have Canada available to my on Ancestry.com so I can't find any censuses with their ship manifest or immigration information on it. Also, it would help too if I knew of other siblings and, of course, her grandmother who she was separated from.

After doing research a few years ago I came to the conclusion that possibly her grandmother was one of those who were detained due to serious illness in Canada and perhaps Mary was separated because she was sent out to work on that plan they had for orphans or those who had no money.

Thank you, I will see what I can find. I probably need to hire a researcher in Canada or go there myself.

Kathleen

Little Mary Garry lost her family forever!!!

My great grandmother, Mary Garry or perhaps McGarry, was born in the Irish Free State between. 1838 - 1840. She emigrated to the U.S. through Canada living there for many years after marrying and having 3 sons.

Sadly, when Mary Garry was a young girl she was separted from her grandmother and never found her or her family again.

I am in hopes that some Garry descendant might have heard of her story and I can possibly connect the dots. I have found nothing on her except on the U.S. Censuses after she was married and living in Nebraska. I can't find her marriage certificate or any birth certificates for their sons born in Canada. It is almost impossible to retrieve records from Canada if one lives in the USA.

She must have married in the Catholic Church or by a priest in Canada. The family lived in Paris, Ontario for a while prior to moving to Nebraska. Mary Garry married Nicholas (Nichlos Gentleman) in Canada somewhere. Nicholas was a farmer.

This is such a sad story and I am so intrigued with it I want to find her family if at all possible. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Have you ever heard of a story of a Garry child (i.e. Mary Garry) being lost and separated from her Grandmother. Mary never found her family again. Mary immigrated, I believe, into Canada. She married Nicholas (or Nicklos) Gentleman there. Had 3 sons born in Canada then the family moved to Platte Center, Nebraska and had other children among which my Grandmother, Mary Agnes Gentleman, was born. Mary Garry was my great grandmother and I am so intrigued and saddened at this sad story.
This is a shot in the dark but it never hurts to try. Thanks.
Kathleen
