Hi!

My name is Courtenay teska. My grandmother is a Garside and a direct decendant of John and Joseph Garside. We have traced back that line to the 1590s. I can get you all of the information I have on them and I would be interested in any additional information you have on those that you have traced already. I'm just starting to put all of my family tree research online and using internet databases to trace my family.

cheers,

Courtenay

Hi again Bernadette

My personal mail address is:- sheilamarcel@smbeer.fsnet.co.uk

Do you have any paper work to prove that your Minnie is the daughter of Frank and Annie. I must admit your info looks more positive than mine. Most emigrants from Nottinghamshire left from Liverpool or a port nearer than Tilbury.

Sheila

Hi Bernadette

I too am descended from Joseph and Elizabeth Taylor. There are a few baptisms on line that 'could' be him. However I tend to favour him being the son of Benjamin & Sarah Bullous who were married in Blyth, Nottinghamshire 31 Mar 1760. I 'think' Elizabeth Taylor was baptised 12 Mar 1762 in Blyth. Joseph and Elizabeth Taylor were married in Bawtry Chapel, the marriage record is posted on my tree.

We can follow his journey from Bawtry to Worksop via the baptisms of his children:- 1st one Tickhill, next 2 Sheffield rest in Worksop. You can follow this journey on a map.
Joseph may well have seen opportunities involving the newly opened Chesterfield Canal (on the banks of this was the place for a Garside timber yard). As both Joseph and Elizabeth died before the 1841 census we do not know what he did for a living but the children were involved in the timber business and a great deal of money and status was gained by the Garside family from the timber business. So we THINK he was the first one to set up the timber business.

I also have another child (James 1763)for Benjamin & Sarah Bullous who, according to the 1841 census was NOT born in Nottinghamshire. Something in the back of my mind is telling me that either Benjamin of Sarah's family were soldiers.

Um Minnie - I have her marrying Fred Harbottle in England - going to look into this.
Hi Courtenay - I am a descendant of Joseph Garside (1760 and Elizabeth Taylor from Worksop. Do you have any info further back than these two? Joseph is my GGGG Grandfather, via William Garside & Ann Scholey, Thomas Garside & Sarah Newton, Frank Garside & Anne Downs, and my Grandmother is Minnie Garside (m Arthur Brown). Minnie & Arthur, along with Arthur's parents John & Gertrude Brown moved to Melbourne, Australia in 1913. I was able to trace back as far as Joseph & Elizabeth, but am a little unsure of further back. Any help would be great.

Bernadette Smith (Wodonga, Victoria, Australia)

This chap married Emily Cull in Farnham, Surrey in 1901, was made bankrupt in 1903 had a daughter in March 1904 Gladys Dolores & prior to that appears to have a military records with the Surrey Queens (having got kicked out for what appears to be fraud?!)

Having been recruited in 1898 aged 24. His Next of Kin is listed as Aunt Mary Garside, of Woodstock, Cape Colony.

I can not find a birth record for him (Army records say his was born in Lancashire), nor can I find a death record.

With such an unusual christian name I was hoping for a breakthrough but it has not meant to be. Anyone else tracing this chap I would love to hear from you.

Many thanks.

Well I am not researching the family, but if you don't know it would seem that he either died before 1911 or got a divorce, for Emily has married George BAKER by 1911 and is living at Cowes on the Isle of Wight

They married in the Portsmouth Reg District in 1909

It would also seem that Mortimer and Emily had another daughter Dorothy in 1905 (LDS Familysearch) in Aldershot

HTH

please can you contact us-trying to find a link to Thomas Douglas Hamilton Garside (aka 'THG' 2xgt grandfather died 1927 Chelsea) who bears an uncanny resemblance to Joseph Garside MP Isle of Man.
THG who was a charismatic and articulate speaker with a varied but interesting career both in UK and USA. He married 1884 PA to Emma Mary goldman (Penn. Lutheran) and had 5 children-Bessie,Signe Elaine,Paul Hamilton Douglas Garside,Robert Taylor Garside, and Emma.
However THG's backgorund remains a mystery -?born c.1855/63 N.England/Scotland,educated Stockholm, possibly son of a railway contractor?
thankyou for your help with this,
look forward to hearing from you.

I’ve just stumbled across this thread.
My father Joseph Garside (born 1922, died 2002) was a nephew of Ethel Garside. He was the son of Elsie Maude (nee Hughes, died c1960) and Joseph Garside (died 1922).
My father spent holidays on the Wirral (West Kirby) with Ethel when he was growing up in the 1930s. I have a photograph of my father with Ethel in c1937. She must have still been alive in the 1940s as my mother (Margaret, nee Tetlow, born 1925) remembers meeting her when she became engaged to my father in 1946. My mother says she was quite a formidable lady. My mother also says she doesn’t remember when Ethel died as my parents were abroad from 1949 to the mid 1960s.

Chris Garside
Today seems an appropriate time to tell Ethel's life story.
Ethel Garside (b 13 Mar 1873) was the second daughter of Joseph Frederick Garside (b Ormskirk) and Mary Ellen Farrimond (b Lathom). The other daughters being Eveline, Nellie and Marjory. Ethel also had two brothers, Joseph Frederick and Edmund. Little is known to me of Ethel's life other than her profession as a 'Nurse' and her travels across the North Atlantic. She had many cousins on her father's side and its to one of those, Mrs Charles Ellison (Dora Ashcroft), that she eventually goes after the Titanic disaster. She had been living in the USA since early 1910 and had returned to her then family home at Old Shields, Ardleigh, nr Colchester in February 1912. It was from there that she was returning to NY on the Titanic.
Ethel's journeys to the US continued - she visited home in Nov 1919, and returned to NY in Mar 1920, sadly just before her father's death a few days later. Her younger brother Joseph Frederick, died in Feb 1922, and there's a record of Ethel arriving back in England on Jul 1922, so it would appear she was also away at the time of his death. Later that year her nephew Also named Joseph Frederick , the son of her late brother was born to Elsie Maud Garside. This child is the only documented descendant of this family (although work is underway to try and link in another 'son'). Ethel returned to NY again in May 1923, only to be absent from home when her remaining brother Edmund drowned in the river Thames in Feb 1924. Ethel returned home in May of that year.
Towards the end of her life Ethel lived near her cousins on the Wirral (nr Birkenhead, in Cheshire) where she died aged 80, on 25 March 1953. She was cremated at Landican Crematorium on 28th March and her ashes were scattered on the Memorial Garden. There is no entry in the Book of Rememberance.
All of this information is verified by Census records; Marriage, Birth and Death Certificates; Passenger Records; Newspaper reports and other records. My personal interest is that my wife's grandmother was one of those many cousins of Ethel's. I have more detailed information about both Ethel's own family and the wider Garside family from Ormskirk for those who may wish to know.

Since posting that message I've since found out that she must have been quite a determined lady. She was a nurse and had travelled from England to NY at least twice before the Titanic voyage. As far as I can gather she resided in a hotel in NY after her rescue but by 1919 she was back travelling to and from England and NY at least 5 times - not sure I'd be that brave after the Titanic. I wonder if she was an employed as a nurse for the White Star line, although none of the ships passenger list note her as an employee. She died in 1953 in Cheshire, England, as far as I can see still a spinster. Anyway her father Joseph was born c1846 in Ormskirk, Lancashire and her mother (Mary Ellen Fairmond) was born c1847 in Lathom, Lancashire.

She was related to Joseph Garside, though I am not sure how. I am guessing that he was her father, or something close to that. I found a record a few years after the Titanic incident where it seems Ethel had worked her way back to England. She then returned to the United States in 1920, somewhere between March and April on the RMS Adriatic, and it said right on the immigration listings that she visited and was closest relative with Joseph Garside in Old Shields, Ardleigh, Essex, just like in the telegraph message.

With so many Garside children I had thought I would find a relative by now, however, you are the first.

I have four pictures of Miriam and many of her parents and siblings a lot of other documents. I would be happy to share them with you. I have that Miriam married Harry (Unknown last name) and two of their children were Florrie and Wil. Any information that you have for Miriam and her descendants and can share with me would be wonderful. Do you live near Macclesfield?

My greatgrandmother was Miriam's sister, Elizabeth. She married Wilfrid A. Leigh (from Macclesfield). Wilfrid and Elizabeth had a son named Wilfrid Jr. and he had a daughter named Kendall who married my father Paul W. Jenkins. So it looks like we are on the same cousin level.

My records indicate that Thomas, Elizabeth, Ernest, Gladys and Doris came to the US and the rest remained in the UK (but I am not certain about the ones that remained in the UK).

I can email you a descendant tree starting with Samuel Garside and Lucy Birchenough. My email address is jenkinsx4@yahoo.com

I am also on Facebook if you belong to that - (I think this should work) http://facebook.com/paulrjenkins

I will try to attach the picture of Miriam to this message.

Good to talk to you.

Paul

Hello, My name is Roger Lennard and I believe that Miriam Garside is my great grandmother. One of Miriam's children was Bertha and she went on to marry Harold Swan. His daughters were Marjorie and Miriam. I am the son of Miriam.

I spoke with my mother and she talks of Miriam Garside's brothers and sisters, remembering that some went to live in the USA. She also remembers the name Floyd Tremper, who married Doris.

I would like to follow up this branch of the family and find out more about our American relatives.
