Both John Garst (m. Lydia Stambaugh) and Joel Garst (m. Anna Stambaugh, Lydia's half-sister) were sons of Thomas Garst, born Botetourt (now Roanoke) Co. VA 16 Jun 1816, died 28 Feb 1889 Wabash Co. IN, married ~11 November 1841 (date of license) in Roanoke Co. VA to Elizabeth Brubaker, daughter of Jacob Brubaker and Susannah Grisso. Thomas Garst and his family moved from VA to the south part of Waltz Twp., Wabash Co., IN, in the fall of 1848, where he lived about a mile east of Mt. Vernon on the Francis Slocum Trail until his death.

John Garst (10 Feb 1844 - 7 May 1933) m. Lydia Stambaugh (1850-1922, daughter of William and Regina Stambaugh) on 24 October 1868. The Stambaughs' farm adjoined that of Thomas Garst. John and Lydia Garst, who lived about 2-3 miles from Thomas Garst near the town of Somerset, had a daughter Cora Lena Mae Garst who died 19 May 1872 at the age of six weeks. Their second daughter, b. 23 Jul 1869, married Elza Burn 5 Mar 1902, but he was killed six weeks after their marriage; she then married Ora Alva Kessler 22 Sep 1917. Lizzie and Ora were living with John at the time of the 1930 census; they took care of him after his wife died in 1922. John Garst was a member of trustee of the Brethren Church, but his funeral was at the Christian Church in Somerset. He was a Democrat.
