Re: Miss Anna Garst photo

This Anna Garst could be the daughter of Mary Jane Bozarth and John Garst. John's parents, Anna Frantz and Abraham Garst II, moved to the Springfield OH area from Botetourt Co. VA, and lived on a farm near North Hampton. Their son John was born and died in Clark Co., and he and his wife Mary Jane are buried in the Myers Cemetery in Pike Twp. John and Mary Jane's daughter Anna R. Garst was born 2/12/1856 and died 2/13/1920. She was living with her parents in Pike Twp., Clark Co., Ohio, at the time of the 1880 Census (age 24); she is the only Anna Garst listed in Clark Co. that year. She married Ephraim Shoup in Miami Co. OH in 1885. Tintypes would have been popular during her youth, having been patented in the U. S. in 1856.

I have an old photo album that is full of mostly tin type photos from the Springfield Ohio area. The only one that is marked is "Miss Anna Garst" My family comes from that area but I can find no connection between the Hays, Jones line and Anna Garst. The album was handed down to my aunt but she knows no one in the album. Any help would be great.

Thanks Paul Jones

accidental death of Darrel Garst, 1990, Kansas

Belleville Telescope, Republic County, Kansas, Thursday, February 22, 1990, page 1:
Scandian Saves Co-Worker's Life Before Dying In Grain Bin
A Scandia man killed in a grain bin accident at Rydal Friday morning apparently acted to save a co-worker's life before he was completely covered with grain.
Darrel Garst, 59 of Scandia, was pronounced dead at Republic County Hospital in Belleville after the accident which occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at the United Grain Elevator at Rydal. Cause of death is believed to be suffocation.
Garst and Ronald Bundreau, 51, of rural Scandia, were working in the large quonset bin just south of the elevator office. The employees had been emptying the bin of milo for several days.
Bundreau told Republic County Sheriff's officers that they were standing in about 18 inches of grain, but that the grain was piled 4 or 5 feet high on the sides of the bin. The grain was being moved from the bin with a floor auger.
When the movement of the grain slowed, Budreau said they used sticks to unplug the auger or open a lower trap door slightly wider.
The trap door was apparently pushed too far open, causing a huge rush of grain into the auger, said Budreau. Both men lost their balance and fell as the grain avalanched towards them, he said.
Garst tried to push Budreau out of the way of the rushing grain, Bundreau said. Garst was knocked to his knees and completely covered in the grain slide, and Budreau was buried about to his chest.
Budreau's legs were pinned in the grain, and he said he was unable to do any more than try to push the grain away from where he thought Garst had fallen.
Jim Erickson, manager of the elevator, had been making regular checks on the two workers in the bin. He had checked on them only a few minutes before the accident.
because of the noise of the equipment, other United Grain employees were unable to hear Budreau's cries for help. The men were trapped for a while before they were found.
Other employees and neighborhood men immediately started working to free Garst and Budreau while waiting for emergency personnel from the sheriff's office, Republic County Ambulance, and fire departments from Scandia and Belleville. The men were trying to move milo away from the two men, and position plywood around them to keep more grain from falling.
Budreau was removed within minutes of the arrival of emergency personnel, and apparently suffered no injuries. A grain evacuator was used to remove Garst from the milo. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
American Legion Supporter
Garst was remembered by fellow employees this week as a hard worker who was willing to tackle any job.
He was a staunch supporter of the Scandia-Courtland American Legion Post, serving as a past commander, along with other community service work.
Garst is survived by his wife and five children of this area, as well as other relatives. A complete obituary is contained elsewhere in this edition of The Telescope.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Home of Scandia and Belleville.
(page 9A) Darrel Garst
Darrel Lee Garst, son of Charles Alfred and Velma Jamison Garst, was born February 10, 1931, at Glasco, and died February 16, 1990, at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, at the age of 59 years and six days.
He received his education in the Valley School, Jamestown, and the rural school at Burr Oak.
He was united in marriage to Carol J. Modlin, March 24, 1951, and to this union five children were born.
He served with the Marine Corps, 9th Regiment, Anti-tank Division during the Korean conflict.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scandia and the Albert Isaacson-James Larsen Post No. 193, American Legion of Scandia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Guy Neal Garst, Verle Jamison; one sister, Norma Jolene.
He is survived by his wife, Carrol of the home; three sons, Kenneth of Webber, Dennis of Salina, Kevin of Scandia; two daughters, Carla Sanpaka of Superior, Mrs. Daren (Jennifer) Johnson of Scandia; 11 grandchildren; four brothers, Paul, of Mankato, Charles and James of Mankato, Delmar of Oklahoma City, Okla..; a half-brother, Virgil Jamison of Wichita; two sisters, Shirley Hancock of Englewood, Colo., Sandra Leonard of Kearney, Nebr.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church of Scandia February 20, conducted by Rev. Barbara Palmer. Graveside services were conducted by the Albert Isaacson-James Larsen Post No. 193, Scandia, at Riverview Cemetery, Scandia.

obit for Tillman Frank Garst, born 1870 Iowa, died 1928 Kansas

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Sept. 13, 1928, page 1:
FRANK GARST MET DEATH IN AUTO ACCIDENT MONDAY
CHARLES ADKINS AND DAVID BRYANT SUFFER BROKEN RIBS AND BAD BRUISES -- GARST FUNERAL YESTERDAY
A deplorable happened Monday evening shortly after six o'clock that resulted in the death of Frank Garst, one of the pioneer citizens of this community and the injury of Charles Adkins and David Bryant. The three men were working out on the road project on No. 81 and at the end of the day's work were coming to town in the Adkins was when they got to the J.W. Lavy place they overtook a truck and turning out to pass it struck loose sand and Charley lost control of the car. It swerved toward the ditch and Charley pulled it in and it then went in the opposite direction and almost ran into the truck and in order to avoid this Charley turned sharply to the left and the car hit the sand again and overturned. Mr. Garst was caught beneath the car and his skull was crushed and it is probable that death was almost instantaneous. Adkins and Bryant suffered broken ribs on both sides and were otherwise bruised up but it is thought that unless unforeseen complications develop that they will come through all right. Dr. Palmer was called and reached the scene of the accident in a very few moments and with the assistance of Mr. Lavy and Will Yenni and others administered emergency treatment and brought the injured men to town. Mr. Adkins was taken to his home and Mr. Bryant, who lives in Downs was taken to the Commercial Hotel where he was rooming. The body of Mr. Garst was taken to the undertaking parlors of Lott & Stine and later to his home in the north part of town.
_______________________________________________
Tillman Frank Garst
Tillman F. Garst was born in Madison county, Iowa, on January 12, 1870 and departed this life on September 19, 1928, aged 58 years, 7 months and 29 days. He came to Kansas when but a boy of fifteen. Twelve years later on March 2, 1892 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elizabeth Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.I. Wright, highly respected pioneer citizens of Glasco and of Cloud county. To this union six children were born, all of whom are living and were with the mother shortly after the sad news of the sudden taking of their father was received. Mr. and Mrs. Garst years ago became members of the United Brethren Church and in the trials incident to pioneer life in the community have always endeavored to look to the Heavenly Beacon for guidance and to inculcate into the lives of their children the teachings of the Master.
Those who have known Frank Garst longest will remember the quiet, genial manner, the cheery winning smile, as well as the reliability and sterling worth of this sturdy old citizen, good neighbor and true friend. The profound sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved wife and children and while an end like that is always a frightful shock those who loved him and mourned his going can find consolation in the fact that the final summons came without the prolonged illness and intense suffering so frequently unhappy incidents of the Reaper's call.
Besides the widow, the deceased is survived by six children, James Wilber of Delphos; Purl Samuel of Natoma; Charles Alfred of Delphos; Mark E. of Minneapolis; Mrs. Bess Damron of Delphos; Lafayette at home. Two brothers, John and Jacob, of Peru, Iowa; five sisters, Mrs. Franc Hogue, Peru, Iowa; Beth Hogue, Alice Chapman, both of Truo, Iowa; Ellen Wells and Marry Hogue, both of Fort Scott, Kansas. Three step-brothers, Chas. Hogue of Jamestown; George and Albert Hogue of Concordia; five step-sisters, Jane Dowler. St. Charles, Iowa; Ellen Garst, Peru, Iowa; Liza Conn, Mrs. L.A. Wright, Mrs. Al Chitton, all of Concordia. Surviving also are a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the family home in the north part of town, conducted by Rev. Elmer L. Brooks of the M.E. Church; special music being furnished by a quartette composed of Will, Lester and Pund Pilcher and Charles Marshall. Mr. Marshall also contributed a solo number which was much appreciated. Interment was in Glasco Cemetery.
Re: James Garst of Va

I don't know if this information is correct, but Rootsweb's World Connect has a file for James Lewis Garst (9/16/1899 VA-11/15/1971 NC, the son of Thomas Dillard Garst and Mary Lewis), who married Mary Rozelle Peatross (7/5/1898-3/1978, the daughter of Seth Campbell Peatross and Rose Lee "Rozelle" Burruss). These two other children (siblings of James Lewis Garst) are listed for Thomas Dillard Garst and Mary Lewis: Lula Woods Garst and Robert Edward Garst (b. 8/28/1900). These four children are listed for James Lewis Garst and Mary Rozelle Peatross: Anne Elizabeth Garst, James Lewis Garst Jr., Eleanor Burruss Garst, and Thomas Lewis Garst (b. 2/11/1931 NC). It looks like James may have moved his family to Guilford Co. NC sometime after he was married (son Thomas was born there 1931, and James himself died in Emerywood/High Point, Guilford Co. NC in 1971), so I would look for him in Guilford Co. NC records. This World Connect database was posted by Cheryl Maxwell, so you could try sending an email to her for more information. See James' file at this website and connect to his ancestors and children from there - http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op.... I hope this helps!

Dear Marjorie,

Just found your reply in 2005 to the 2001 post from Cheryl about the Garst family. You and I are related. My great-grandmother was Ella DeLany who married Dillard H. Clark. She was a sister of Dorothy and Laura. Dillard Clark was a friend of Charles Elias Garst and met Ella at Fort Stanton, NM also.

My grandmother, Alice Hartzel Clark (daughter of Ella and Dillard) married Datus Myers and they moved to Santa Fe, NM as artists in the 1920's. I have photos of the DeLany sisters, Nancy Hartzel, and Nancy's mother, Alice Wallahan. They are posted on Ancestry but the size for them is limited on Ancestry. I would be happy to share better Tif copies with you. And to exchange any other information, Jean

We travel in small circles. :) Frank, age 10, is listed in Samuel Garst's household in 1880, Madison Co. Iowa. He was the son of Samuel's first wife, Nancy Ann Fowler.

Samuel was the son of Philip Garst (Jacob and Magdalena) and Mary Hartman. I've never tried to figure out how Mary was related to the rest of the Hartmans, but sooner or later, we'll get them all connected!

So you and your friend have a common ancestor in John Nicholas? She and I share Jacob.
I have a friend here in the San Diego area who is the granddaughter of Purl S. Garst. She's not really into genealogy, but I'm forwarding all this info to her. Because our maiden names were both Garst, I've been trying to figure out how we're related. I knew her Garsts came from Kansas, so when I got this posting, I ask her if she knew of any of these people - et voila!

I thought I sent you this information:

From the 1910 census in Cloud KS
Frank T Garst 54
Mary E Garst 49
James W Garst 26 son
Purl S Garst 24 son
Charles A Garst 22 son
Marcus E Garst 21 son
Bessie M Garst 16 dau
Lafayette Garst 13 son
Stephen D Garst 2 6/12 grandson
John F Garst 6/12 grandson

In 1900 they had James, Pearl, Charles and Mark E. so it appears these are their only children. Stephen and John were probably James' children.

Searching for descendants (and others) interested in, and knowledgeable about, the family of William Carst/Garst and his wife, Mary Ann McCabe, born about 1841, Beaver County, PA. Mary Ann is listed with her mother, Mahala (Lee) McCabe, in the 1850 Beaver Co., Pa census, and reportedly died in 1853. No census records found for William Carst or Garst, but Mary Ann and William Carst were reportedly married after the 1850 census and had a daughter, Amanda Carst, who is listed with her grandmother, Mahala McCabe in the 1860 census of Beaver County.

Judy.

I was sent a message on Rogers probably by mistake. I noticed Eliz Garst and Oliver Cochran named who are in my genealogy. Just a note: My William and Jane Alcorn Cochran moved from PA to Warren Co, OH then to Wabash Co, IN abut the time Eliz Garst and Oliver Cochran moved there.

If you find William and Jane Cochran, you might trace them for any blocks you've run into. Sounds like they were family and friends.

I get junk email by posting messages, so return address is fake. Sorry.

Richard
Karen.

Not sure how my Cochran and Garst comes into the family your are looking for. I have Oliver and Eliz but not much more info than them. Wish I had more.

Interesting though, my Cochrans moved from PA to Warren Co, OH, then to Wabash Co, IN near the times the Rogers and Garsts moved there. They must have been close friends, so following them may lead to new info.

My Cochran was William and Jane Alcorn Cochran. If you see those names, you will begin seeing my family.

Wish you well.
Richard
Richard, we have corresponded before and figured out that the connection between your William and Jane Alcorn Cochran and my Eliza Garst Cochran is that among their children was Francis Marion Cochran (1837-1862). Francis and his first wife Mary Flook (m. 19 Nov 1857) were the parents of the Oliver Monroe Cochran (b. 1858) who married Eliza Jane Garst (b. 1859) in 1878. After Francis died in the Civil War, his widow Mary married on 4 Nov 1869 Henry Cochran (who was another son of your William and thus the uncle of Mary's first husband Francis Cochran). Her son Oliver was just eleven at the time. Henry and Mary Cochran's farm was next to that of Thomas Garst, Eliza's father (they lived east and south of Mt. Vernon in Waltz Twp., Wabash Co., Indiana), so that's how Oliver Cochran and Eliza Garst would have met. Oliver and Eliza "Caughran" were living with Henry (75) and Mary E. (42) in the 1880 census for Richland Twp., Grant Co., Indiana (which is next to Waltz Twp., Wabash Co.), along with Oliver's two half-brothers and two half-sisters from this second marriage. Thomas Garst was a witness to Henry Cochran's will, dated 6 Jan 1882, recorded 5 May 1886.

Sorry, Karen, I don't see any connection between your family and mine. My Thomas Garst (1816-1889) moved to Indiana from Roanoke Co. Virginia in 1848; my Ezekiel Rogers (1815-1882) came from New Jersey via Warren Co. Ohio just a little earlier. Their children, Jacob Garst (1847-1918) and Alice Rogers (1855-1918) were married in Wabash Co. Indiana in 1876. All of these people died in Wabash Co. Indiana and are buried there.
