I am currently researching various branches of my families genealogy and presently have over 11,000 names in my family database. I am continuously seeking additional information to update my files!

I am researching and seeking additional information on these families and their allied lines; BALDRIDGE, BLACKWELL, COVERDELL, EVANS, FERGUSON, FITZGERALD, FRAZIER, GARTEN, LAYTON, RHODES, SHOUP, WHITE, and WILLIAMSON.

Visit Family Lineages Blog @ www.familylineages.blogspot.com

~ Family Lineages - Sybil A.

Thanks. Yes I have tried the findagrave site but she is not listed. I have the Summers County and Monroe County cemetery books but she is not listed in either one.

I have been unable to locate her in either the 1870 or the 1880 censuses. Of course that is not unusual - different spellings, etc. - but I have tried every spelling that I can think of; I have searched to see if she is living with one of her children, etc. I don't doubt that she is probably there but I sure can't find her. And I have seen no reference that documents the 1888 death date.

What is the Burton Garten book that you mentioned? I am not aware of it.

Thanks again.
Arley

Rebecca Ballengee was the wife of Thompson Garten, who died in 1859. She supposedly died 29 June 1888 but I can find no record of that. In fact I can find no record of her at all past the 1860 Monroe County census. Can anyone point out records after 1860, especially a death record?

GARTEN, Charles W. b: 1834 VA

Aloha!

My Garten line starts with a son of George Goodall Garten. His name was Charles W. Garten b: 1834 m: Nancy Pendleton. The info I have on the Garton/Gartin/Garten line came from various other descendants. My initial information came from a 2nd cousin and his siblings who have been researching our line for many years. My gr.grandfather was Claude Grover Garten who lost his wife to the flu epidemic of 1920. Claude remarried to a woman named Mary and was living in OK in 1927.

I have been able to collect information begining with William Garton d: 1709 and wife Margaret Angell. This is the earliest known ancestor of our line. The info that I have has conflicting info. I am seeking additional info and possible documentation to clarify these conflictions.

Mahalo!
S.

Page 385 of "Comanche County History".

Mrs. William D. (Comfort) Garten moved to Comanche County in 1906 with her family: Hardy, John, Oscar, Estella and Reed. The Gartens had bought 680 acres of land southeast of Buttermilk. The house they built and lived in still stands 2 miles west and one mile south of the Jim Haas farm.
The older daughters, Martha and Maude, had married brothers, Frank and Alex Smith, and had stayed behind near their former home in Bennington, Kansas. One daughter, Ada, had married Rex Klippert and moved to California. The father and the oldest son of the family had succumbed to typhoid fever in 1893.

This mother who had worked hard to provide for and keep her family together continued to maintain a strong sense of family closeness even after her children married and moved to homes of their own. Sunday dinner at Grandma Garten's was not to be ignored. This fostered a closeness in the Garten cousins that persists to this day.

Ref: Written circa 1980 by Merle Garten Batman, daughter of Reed and Zella Boshell Garten.

Mahalo!
S.
William Garten, son of James & Betsey (Sears) Garten

WILLIAM GARTEN, an old settler of Daviess County, Ind., was born in Lawrence County, Ind., August 7, 1822, and is one of four children born to James and Betsey (Sears) Garten. Our subject's paternal grandfather was of Welsh descent. He was a pioneer of Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Lawrence County, Ind., having killed deer and wild game of various kinds in each State. He was a skillful marksman and rivaled Daniel Boone in his love for forest life. James was born in Tennessee in 1788. He removed to Kentucky in youth, where he resided until 1816, when he moved to Lawrence County, Ind., purchased land and began tilling the soil. He speculated largely in stock, which he took to Chicago, driving them through unbroken forests and across rivers and creeks. He moved to Daviess County in 1839 and purchased 320 acres of land. He died in said county May 30, 1874. He was one of the first settlers in the township and assisted largely in forming the first settlements. The mother died in 1822. Subject's mother died when he was but two week's old. He was reared by his people with whom he remained until twenty-two years old. February 22, 1844, he married Margaret, daughter of Zacharias and Peggy Dicks. Mrs. Garten was born November 13, 1822, in Monroe County, Ind. To their union eight children were born, seven of whom are living. The children's names are Sarah E., Mary A., Zacharias T., James M.. John L., William H., Zimri M. and Henry S. After marriage Mr. Garten lived on the old home place for two years, and in 1846 he purchased 180 acres of land, where he settled and has since resided. He has been an industrious, hard-working man, and by his energy and close attention to business now owns 330 acres of land, besides giving 145 acres to his children. In politics he is a Republican and cast his first vote for Henry Clay.

Ref: History of Daviess County by: Goodspeed Publishing Company 1886
