Hello ~
In Rosalie Rogers Davis's ancestry book, The Garth Family
1734 - 1986; states that the Long maiden name was completely incorrect on page 52. Rosalie has spent her life
studying our Garth ancesters thoroughly.
Warm regards,
Lucy Mack Bryant

General George Garth and Mrs Anne Robinson of Beverley, Yorkshire

I am seeking information please on the family of General George Garth (1733-1819). According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Garth refers) he died in Beverley Yorkshire in 1819. My ancestor Anne Robinson (nee Randall) appears to have been living in Beverley at the time and it seems that the general adopted one of her children who became Lieutenant George Garth Robinson (he was probably born in 1795, and served in the 31st Regiment. I do not know much about Ann other than that she married Robert Robinson in Great Yarmouth in 1782 and that she died in Great Yarmouth in 1841. According to the 1841 census she was born outside Norfolk. It seems that the General left Anne Robinson a large legacy, so I wonder whether Anne is related to the Garth family somehow or if there is another reason for the legacy.

Regards
Peter

Hi Wendy,
Further to my earlier message today, it occurs to me that you 'may' have omitted a Generation.
You said that Benjamin and William's father, Jonathon Garth was born 16.3.1769, and married an Ann Anderson. Well, if that is correct, and it may well be, Jonathon would have been 42 years old when his first child Jane was born (in 1811) and 65 when his twins were born in 1834. Jonathon's wife Ann may well have been some 20 odd years younger than himself, possible but most unlikely don't you think? I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
trevor carpenter x

Hi Wendy(Cousin dear), WOW !!!! What a fantastic surprise. I had given up all hope of finding out anything else about Benjamin's life and his Ancestors.
When investigating the Garth's, I saw that there were Garth's from Durham, but did not consider them, as, word had been passed down through the generations, that the Garth Ancestry originated in Ireland, and that at some time prior to Benjamin (b.23.3.1824), there was in fact a Lord and Lady Garth in Ireland - other than that we are bereft of information.
I have a record of the 13 siblings from Jane born 1811(do not know actual date) to Ann and Guido born 4.12.1834.
I am absolutlely astounded with the information that you have kindly provided, at some time, I would be intrigued to know, as to how you found out all the info.
However, I see that you are descended from William (b.18.12.1817), the 4th born child of Jonathon and Ann Anderson. That makes us very distant cousins I suppose.
I am extremely eager to receive absolutely any more information that you may have. If you want to contact me directly my email address is trevor.carpenter2@virgin.net and my tel. no. is 01255 812433.
Whether you want to provide me information through this 'notice board' site, or directly to me Wendy, is entirely down to you, whatever is the easiest and quickest.
I see that at some time Guido and Julius, moved from Canada to Iowa (USA)(after Benjamin died),Guido having at least 4 children with Alice (nee ?), but there is no mention of Julius in the USA census reports, what on earth happened to him, or did he die early like Benjamin ?
Not too sure if you know, but Benjamin was a Thames Lighterman. He allegedly owned 3 sailing barges named Peace, Plenty and Prosperity. These are supposed to have conveyed grain form the Uk to India. One of Benjamin's sisters is supposed to have a married a Banker from Bombay, so it is reported in old letters.
When Benjamin's wife returned to the UK after Benjamin died in Ottawa 18.1.1860, she eventually remarried, got her hands on Benjamin's money ( sale of 3 barges) and spent the money on her 'new' family, not the 2 daughters she had with Benjamin. Nice lady eh ??
I am dying to know what other info. you have Wendy, so I will close now.
How can I ever thank you for the information given, what a lovely early Christman present - my rellies will be over the moon !
From a very appreciative Trevor Carpenter.
Best regards
Trevor x

Sorry--my research on the Garth's only went so far as to confirm the information I had on Elijah's marriage. I know that Thomas was the father but other than what I've seen on the internet I am afraid I don't know anything further. I'll keep you in mind the next time I go to the Library of VA and see what I can find if I have time--Ginger

Thank you for this information. I really appreciate. What do you know about Judith, wife of Thomas Garth? She is said to be the daughter of Salem Bocock. I am trying to prove who the children of Salem Bocock were. According to Garth accounts, Judith had a sister named Mary who married Henry Shelton of Albemarle County. I am trying to prove this. I am a descendant of Henry Shelton. I have found no Marriage Record of Henry and Mary, but she is identify is his will as his widow Mary. I need to prove if she was born a Bocock. A Jason Bocock was a witness in Henry's estate. It is rumored that is was a sibling of Judith and Mary as well. Any help or guidance in documenting all this would be greatly appreciated.

Garth Ancestry

My Paternal Great, Great Grandfather, Benjamin Garth, married an Emily Charlotte Gofford 8th February 1856 in the parish of Southwark (then Surrey) now south London. He was a lighterman, owning 3 cargo vessels sailing regularly to India carrying Grain. In the late 1850's Benjamin, Emily and daughter Annie went to Canada. He was employed by the Canadian Government as a pioneer, looking for suitable land to open new Townships. On the 18th January 1860 in Ottawa, he died - of extreme exposure to the cold. He had another daughter Jane, borne in early 1860. Emily and the 2 daughters returned to the UK sometime later in that same year.
It would also seem that Benjamin's father - Johnathan was a Sea Captain, but little else is known of him.
Does anyone wnow of these Garth's ?
Many thanks - Trevor carpenter.

It would 'appear' that he may have had two Brothers who went with him to Canada - named Julian and Guido. Guido was a witness at Benjamin's marriage to Emily.

Hi Mary,

My email address has changed to javatestcase@yahoo.com.

I wanted to share something I found when I was last at my grandfathers. It's funny, I've seen it many times, and never read it. My grandmother had handwritten the family tree tracing us back to Robert and Jane Garth too, so it's a pretty special thing. I'm not sure the origin of the card, what it really is, or who made it for whom.

It's framed, and sealed on the back with paper, so I won't try to scan it now, but I've transcribed it:

Sacred to the Memory of
Jane Garth
Who died January 28th, 1850, and was interred at St. Peter's
Church, Ashton, January 31st
IN THE 58th YEAR OF HER AGE:
ALSO of
Robert Garth
Who died July 9th, 1853, and was interred at Christ Church, Ashton, July 11,
IN THE 64th YEAR OF HIS AGE.

Oh! Yes. It is hard at the last separation.
To part with the parents that loved us so true,
The home and the heart feels a wide desolation,
At bidding our dearly loved ones adue.

SOURCE: Framed memorial card in the possesion of Rosemary Carroll, presumable passed down from Nancy Garth

Mary,

This is a very old post, and your email has changed but if you ever sign on here, we are distantly related.

Robert Lee Garth was born in Philadelphia, and his parents were Francis Garth (1826-?) and Harriet ???. Francis was born in Lancashire county in England, most likely in Ashton under Lyne, where he appears in the 1841 census with his parents Robert Garth (1796-?) and Jane ??? (1796-?) lived.

I am descended from Francis Garth's sister Nancy. Nancy married John MacDonald and moved to Phildelphia around 1863, long after Francis, who I believe migrated in 1849. I believe the families were still in contact for many years.

I have a great deal more information on the family, contact me if you ever read this.

Bill

For what it's worth, the 1841 census provided more info on the Garth family, although it's still pretty lean:

Robert Garth b.1796
+ Jane ? b.1896
== Nancy Garth b. 15 Jul 1835
== Frances Garth b. 1826
== Samuel Garth b. 1837 Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire

No sign of any of them in the 1851 census.

Not a lot of information on Robert at this point.

He is listed as the father of Nancy Garth on her GRO marriage certificiate in her marriage to John MacDonald (sometimes listed as McDonald) on July 20, 1854. His occupation is listed as Furniture Broker.

The marriage occurred in Oldham, but it is unclear if the Garth family resided in Oldham or Ashton. I don't know the connection to the witnesses to the marriage, but they are Robert Roberts, and Thomas Rogers.

John and Nancy emmigrated to Philadelphia around the time of the Civil War, but there is no record that any other Garth family went with them.

I'm looking for more information about this family. I know a little of the history, but would love to learn more about their English family, or other decendants

My Grandmother, has told me that Nancy Garth was from Ashton Under Lyne, and that she married a McDonald (unsure of the original spelling, could be MacDonald). She still has antiques from her Great-Grandmother Nancy brought to America with her.

I believe from my research her husband was John McDonald, and that our Nancy Garth was born around 1835.

This may be their marriage in the "England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983".

McDonald, John
Garth, Nancy
1854 September Oldham Greater Manchester Lancashire

Their first two children Elizabeth born 1859, and Elias born 1861 were born in England.

Jonn and Nancy immigrated to Philadelphia around 1862, and had several more children. I've mapped out their family below, we only know anything about a couple of the kids. Most of the information is from the 1880 census.

Nancy Garth b. 1835, England
+John McDonald b. 1833, England

== Elizabeth McDonald b. 1859, England

== Elias McDonald b. 1861, England

== Francis McDonald b. 1863, PA

== Sarah J.
Walter Mozley, married Sarah Garth, dau of John and Rachel Garth, Louisa Co., VA

Walter Mozley, sometimes spelled Mouseley.Mousley.Mosley, Moseley, etc. was born about 1729 probably in Virginia, and married Sarah Garth, daughter of John Garth. John Garth lived in Louisa Co., VA. He had a number of children, one named Sarah who married Walter. Sarah and Walter had at least four children, two sons and two daughters. The names of these children are known because Walter left a will which he signed "Walter Mozley". He died in 1800. The name of these children are James, William, Nancy who married Obediah Trent, and Susanna who married John McCabe. The name has been passed down thru the McCabe desc. and given to the female children as a middle name spelled "Moseley".

Oral family history says that Walter was a brother to Edward Mozley, my ancestor, and that their father was James Mozley who came from England.

The first record that I found was in Louisa Co., VA in 1750 when Walter Mousley and Edward Mously witnessed a deed between Grantor: James Buchanan, Grantee: Thomas Ross. I found a slew of records for Walter, but Edward is hard to find until in Albemarle Co in 1760 when Francis Meriwether paid Edwrd Mosley for land on the E branches of Taylor Creek of Rockfish adj. Archibald Woods, Francis Athrington.

We have lost the sons to research and do not know of any children, but it seems likely that there were children. I am searching for descendants of James and William Mozley, however they spell their last names.

John Garth, son of John Garth, and brother to Sarah, and Walter Mozley were overseers for Thomas Jefferson. Walter is mentioned a lot in Jefferson's notebooks. TJ spelled his name with variations of Mousley/ Mouzely/etc. Also associated with Louisa, Albemarle, and Bedford Co., VA is Meriweather Lewis and Patric Henry. John Garth, the father, owned land near a Meriweather family member.

While this Mozley family is not as prominent as the other Moseley/Mosley families from VA, they also have a very interesting history. Descendants have been told that if it was not spelled "Mozley", they are not related. While there are descendants who have changed the spelling to Mosley, Moseley, and Mosely, there is still an oral history in some of the families of the named once being spelled with a "Z". Some of the Mozley family who descend from David Mozley and Elizabeth Terell who lived Rabun Co., GA, spell their name "Mozeley". My Grandfather had two brothers who spelled it Mosley because the army told them that that was the way it was supposed to be spelled! Some of the descendants of my Grandfather's oldest brother spell their name "Mosley".

If any of this strikes a bell, or sounds like it could be your family, please contact me. We are looking for desc. of James and William specifically because they have been lost to research.

Thank you
Mona Herrin
Update on Edwin B Garth and parents

Edwin B Garth born June 1885 appears to be the son of Burwell Gates Garth and Sally Brown Early, according to the 1900 Census for Ivy District, Albemarle County, Virginia. His siblings are Elizabeth b1883, Burwell b1887, Fendal b1889, Bernard b1891, Hunter b1894, and Ruby b1896.

Edwin B Garth married Margaret G Kemper in 1907 and are found in Arden, Berkeley County, West Virginia in the 1910 census. There is a one-year-old daughter, Margaret G, in the household.

I believe that I've found Edwin in the 1920 census for Alexandria, Virginia, but he is a boarder in a household and no longer married.

Burwell Gates Garth appears to be the son of Burwell G Garth and Emily Burnley, found in the Fredericksville Parrish area of Albemarle County, Virginia.

Would like to find others working on this branch to compare notes.
Edwin B Garth 1885-1967 m Vada Heatwole 1902-1993

Trying to verify this couple who married about 1921.

I have not been able to find Edwin on any census as of yet. I find Vada in 1930 living with her children in the home of her parents in Harrisonburg VA..

The children of Edwin B and Vada Garth include Edwin B Jr b1923, Robert A b1925, Sarah Mary b1927, and twins Elizabeth and Nancy b1929. It is possible that there were others born after 1930.

It is possible that Edwin was previously married to Margaret Kemper of Albermarle Co VA.
