Correction on post for Charles & Matilda Gaskill

I made a mistake in my post for Charles & Matilda Gaskill's family. The book only lists one son for Charles and Matilda. It says their son Samuel Gaskill, born 1804 New Jersey. Samuel married Mariah A. Sears of Medina Co., OH. In the 1850 Athens Co., OH census Samuel is listed as 43, blacksmith born in NJ; Maria age 44 b. PA; Alcenius age 15; George W. age 16; Jacob B. age 12; Harriet age 9; Ellen Jane age 8; William M. & Ann E. age 4; Mary Olive age 2 - all children born in Ohio. No information was given on Charles Gaskill's occupation other than he owned a section of government land in Medina Co., OH. We can find no evidence of Charles & Matilda's other children and they do not appear in the Medina or Summit Co. census for 1820 or 1830. Any information on Charles Gaskill's family would be appreciated. Thank you.

Charles & Matilda Gaskill and family - from New Jersey to Ohio after War of 1812

I am looking for information about Charles & Matilda Gaskill who came from NJ to Ohio after 1812 and settled in Medina Co., OH according the the book " A Standar dHistory of The Hanging rock Iron Region of Ohio", pub. 1916. In that book is a biography for Alsines Gaskill, grandson of Charles & Matilda stating that Charles was the son of Samuel & Mariah A. Sears who married in Medina Co., before moving on to Muskingum Co. and finally living in Athens Co., OH. Samuel & Mariah A. Sears children were Alsines, 1834, George W., Jacob B., Harriet, Ellen Jane, William M. and Ann E. who were twins, and Mary Olive, b. circa 1848. In 1863 Samuel & Mariah moved to Woodson Co., KS where Samuel died three months after their arrival. Children staying in Kansas were William and Mary Olive while the other Gaskill children lived in Vinton and Athens Counties, OH. Anna Gaskill married Joseph Deval/Devault and had a daughter Ella/Ellen, born Ohio, who appears as a Gaskill in the Kansas census. Ellen/Ella married George Allen and moved to Oklahoma. If anyone has information about Charles & Matilda Gaskill or Samuel & Mariah's children would they please contact the following researchers: Bob Allen at GranthamR@aol.com - John Zeegler at zeegler@juno.com or Kathryn Mereness at MMer2000@aol.com Thank you.

Gail,
Would you perhaps be the daughter of Lauriece Forstner? I am researching my Hensley lineage that takes me to Aunt Gwenie Hensley that married John Ball. They were from TN but moved to CA after her mother, Mozella, passed away. I have been trying to trace her family there and was told by an Aunt in B'ham AL that she thought she m.1 a Gaskill and Lauriece's brother, James has her married to a Krolick. If this sounds familier please email me at southerncomfort1@msn.com
Mary

Gaskill was Amanda's maiden name, and she also had a connection to a Harriett Gaskill and a Sydney Hobbes in the late 1820s. I'd be interested in learning if you have some information on either of these women, who also lived in Carteret in 1830.

From Portrait and biographical album of Midland
County , Mich

Samuel D. Gaskill, farmer section 24, Ingersoll Township, is a son of Silas and Jane(Brown)Gaskill, who passed their lives in their native State, New York, she dying in April, 1866, and he in the spring of 1878.
Of their eight children, the subject of this sketch was the second son. He was born in what is now Wyoming Co, N.Y., Sept. 30, 1826; attended the Wilson Collegiate Institute,in Niagara Co., N.Y. From the age of 21 to 24 he was clerk in a store at Lockport, N. Y., and for two seasons was engaged in stock business and in teaching school during the winters. In 1853 he came to Lapeer Co., Mich., and three years and a half afterward, in 1856, he came to this county, settling in Ingersoll Township, on 80 acres, which he had taken one year previously, under the Graduation Act. He built a shanty and began to clear the ground. He afterward added to it by purchase 80 acres more, and of that farm he has 70 acres in a good state of cultivation. About 1872 he purchased 40 acres of wild land on section 24, where he now resides, and in 1882 built a fine residence.
Mr. Gaskill has held the office of Probate Judge 12 years, has been Supervisor six years, Justice of the Peace one term, besides holding the various school offices. Politically, he is a Republican, and in religion he inclines to the Baptist faith.
Judge Gaskill was married in Niagara Co, N.Y. May 8, 1851, to Maria, daughter of William and Julia Ramsey, and born in Essex Co, N.Y., April 23 1827. Her father was a native of New York State and died in Niagara Co, N.Y., Dec. 25 1856. Her mother was born in New Hampshire, of Scotch descent, and is still living. Mr. and Mrs. Gaskill have two children,-Frances L. and John L.

Silas Gaskill the brother of Samuel D Gaskill also came to Michigan he was a lawyer and later a judge. Their father was Silas Gaskill but does anyone know who Silas's father was.
Thanks
Donna Sutten

I would like to find the burial place of Jane Ann Gaskill Jenkins Cameron Johnson. She was born abt. 1816 in Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, the daughter of Eli Gaskill. She was first married in 1837, Clinton Co., OH, to Nelson Jenkins who died in 1844. The second marriage was to a Cameron and the third to William S. Johnson.

In 1860 the Johnson family lived in Silvercreek Twp., Jamestown, Ohio. After the death of William Johnson, I am no longer able to find Jane. Several of the Johnson family, including William and a sister of Jane Gaskill Johnson are buried in Glen Forest/ Yellow Springs Cemetery, Yellow Springs, Miami Twp., Ohio. There is no record for Jane in the Greene County or Clinton Co.,Ohio Cemetery books. Josephine Johnson, a daughter of this marriage, married Frank Hafner, Jr. in about 1875. Mr. Hafner helped run the Neff House Hotel in Yellow Springs. Hafner died in Springfield, Clark Co., Ohio. The Hafner log home is Ye Old Trail Travern of today.
Marie Reedy rreedy@mics.net

Welcome!

Yes, there were Gaskills in the Caribbean. I don't know how they are related to the US Gaskills or the English Gaskills.

Do you have any black male Gaskill relatives?

We could do a DNA test and see if maybe they are part of the bloodline. I have heard that many black Gaskill slaves took the Gaskill name. (Because the Gaskill owners were so nice. Isn't that always the story?) So there may not be a blood connection.

Either way, we're all family!

Hal

I have no information on Louisa Bradney. However, I have pictures of the tombstones of her husband, Josiah Gaskill, and their daughter Effie in Old Mission Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas. I am not related to this family, but my friend was Effie's step-granddaughter and she is buried there in the same lot. If anyone is interested in these tombstone photos, I will be glad to send them.

Judy

My mother had a brother (I think his name was David Gaskill) who faded into the New England area many years ago. The family completely lost track of him. They were all born in Beaufort, North Carolina. Another brother was named William. Four brothers, four sisters: William, David, Leon, Burt, Acie, Carrie, Cora, and Missouri, who was my mother. Their father was Sylvester Gaskill and his mother was supposedly named Amanda. Is it possible that you are related to the lost Gaskills?
Is it possible your Eli Gaskill was related to an "Elisha Gaskill" of Wyanet, IL (at least around 1862)? He and the only 2 siblings I have names for, William Penn and Henry Gaskill (there were other brothers and sisters) may have come from Rhode Island. At least that's where their father (fnu) was at this time.

Sincerely yours,
Shari Hogan
John Cross/Margaret Wright - Liverpool-Australia-U.S. Circa 1870

I have nothing on my GG Grandma MARGARET WRIGHT's past other than having been born around 1812 in Liverpool, England. She married JOHN CROSS on 13 Sep 1836 in Huyton By Roby, and had 10 children in Liverpool.

When husband and an 11th child passed after a few years of the family living in Australia, MARGARET WRIGHT CROSS took 4 younger (of 5 remaining) children to U.S. via England in 1869. They joined married daughter ANNE JANE CROSS and WILLIAM PENN GASKILL in Wyanet, Illinois.

[WM. GASKILL BORN 1829 R.I., DIED MAY 9, 1893 IN WYANET. HAD AN OLDEST BROTHER ELISHA IN WYANET AND AT LEAST ONE OTHER, HENRY. FATHER, FNU GASKILL LIVED NEAR BLACKSTON, RHODE ISLAND IN 1862 WITH 3RD WIFE OF NY. A journal belonging to Anne Jane Cross Gaskill states that after staying at Father Gaskill's in R.I., "we visited around at my husband's brothers' and sisters' homes until April 1862" on way to visit Elisha in Wyanet. Settled there for 2 years before moving to Clarence, MO.]

There were several moves, including Burlington, Iowa, then Buda, Illinois where Margaret passed March 26, 1871. At various times some were in Indiana and Missouri as well. Four of John and Margaret Wright CROSS' children settled in Chicago:

ANNE JANE GASKILL
MARY RIDER (2nd wife of George Rider after Barbara died)
AUSTIN JOHN CROSS (m: MARY SUSANNA BELL)
BARBARA C. RIDER (1st wife to GEORGE E. RIDER of MD)

WOLSTAN JOSEPH CROSS settled in Missouri with wife, EVALINE LNU.

WILLIAM CROSS (eldest son and 27 at time) was the only child who remained in Melbourne, Australia when rest of family emmigrated.

I have always suspected that additional WRIGHT family members also moved from England to Midwest as so many did once other relatives settled in America. Also seeking info on descendents of WOLSTAN CROSS, GASKILLS, and RIDERS.

If anyone recognizes any of the above, either in England or the States (or elsewhere), would VERY much appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerely yours,
Shari (Cross-Engel) Hogan
Hi. Thank you for your reply. I know of no children for them. Mary would have been around 40 year's old when they married in Green Co,Oh,most likly {Xenia} since the record only say's Green.Marriage record {23-Jan-1861} by JP-James Kyle.last name as Burton which is another version of the spelling of Burden along with Burdon,Borden,Burdin. The 1850 Fed Censes for Librity Twp,Clinton Co Oh list the name as Borden,1860 as Burden. The only known son of Mary's was Edmund Borden/Burden born 1839/40 and died in Clinton Co 1913, my gg grandfather. He married Angeline Hubbell from Shelby Co,Oh. 1858,Clinton Co,Oh. I'm sorry I have no other children for Samuel or Mary.or know anything of their where about's after 1865 Clinton, when her father's will was presented to the court for probate by them.
Have information abt. WILLIAM & MARY PATCHETT GASKILL of Tippecanoe Co. & Indinapolis, IN

I have information about the family of William and Mary Patchett Gaskill who lived in Tippecanoe Co., IN IN 1910 and later in Indianapolis, IN. In 1900 William was living with his sister, Mary Gaskill (Thomas) Mattox in White Co., IN. William Gaskill and Mary Gaskill Mattox were two of the six children of Eli Gaskill Jr. & his wife Emily Peters of Clinton Co., OH. I am descended from Eli Gaskill Jr's brother, William Smith Gaskill of Madison Co., OH. I have been researching all the children of Eli Gaskill Sr. of Clinton Co., OH. I would be happy to share what I've found and would very much like to talk with descendants of Mary Mattox and William Gaskill. I can be emailed at MMer2000@aol.com. Thank you. Kathryn Mereness

Mike, Would you please contact me. My gr.gr.grandfather, William Smith Gaskill of Madison Co., OH was the uncle of William Gaskill who married Mary Patchett. William Gaskill was the son of Eli Gaskill Jr. and his wife, Emily Peters of Clinton Co., OH. Eli and Emily had six children: Alice, Harriet, Clinton, Frances, Mary and William [who married Mary Patchett]. I have been looking for Eli's family for quite a while and can only account for three of the children. Harriet/Hattie stayed in Ohio and lived with my gr.gr.grandparents until she married. Eli Jr. took his wife and children to Pulaski Co., IN where Emily died shortly after the trip. Clinton married in Pulaski Co and disappears from the census and Wiliam married Mary Patchett. I am in contact with descendants of Hattie and they had no idea she had five siblings so I believe Eli's family lost touch with the Gaskill's back in Ohio. I would love to discuss this with you. Please contact me at MMer2000@aol.com Thank you. Kathryn Mereness

Shari, I should have phrased that answer differently. Eli Gaskill, Jr. was the son of Eli Gaskill Sr. of Clinton Co., OH. Eli Gaskill Jr. would have been the grandson of Samuel Gaskill of Burlington Co., NJ. I'm sorry for the confusion. Eli Gaskill Jr. went to Indiana with his wife and children after the Civil War.

Shari, No, my Eli was the son of Samuel Gaskill who came from Burlington Co., NJ. The family is written up in the "History of Clinton County Ohio" and everything has proved to be correct. We just don't know where in Pennsylvania Samuel settled and had his children before coming to Ohio. We do not think anyone from our family was in Illinois. Thank you for replying.

I have done more research and would like to make additional comments on Eli Gaskill, Jr's family. Eli Gaskill, Jr. was the son of Eli Gaskill Sr. and his second wife, Hannah Smith of Clinton Co., OH. I have Eli Gaskill Jr's. Civil War Pension packet which gives more information about his life. In 1870 Eli and Emily Peters Gaskill were living in Union Twp., Clinton Co., OH. Eli is age 40, Emily is age 21 which must be a census mistake, Alice is 13, Harriet is 11, Clinton is 9, Frances is 7, Mary is 5 and William Gaskill is age 1. In the Pension Application envelope there is an affadavit that says Emily Peters Gaskill died in Winamac, Pulaski, IN in 1872. When Eli Gaskill Jr. applied for the pension he had remarried 2nd to Jennie E. Baker in Pulaski County, IN on 13 August 1882. Eli died on 22 November 1894 in Winamac. Eli and Jennie had no children. I know the daughter Hattie/Harriet Gaskill was living in 1880 with her aunt and uncle, William Smith & Jane Hutson Gaskill in South Solon, Madison, OH. In 1880 the daughter Mary was living in Monroe, Pulaski, IN with the family of Abner Davenport as a household servant, age 15. Mary gave a desposition for her father and at that time she was listed as Mary Mattox of Winamac. I have not found her in any census. I do not know what happened to the other children of Eli and Emily Peters Gaskill. Jennie E. Baker Gaskill also applied for a widow's pension stating that she was blind and unable to take care of herself. I do not know when Jennie died but she was still living when the 1900 Pulaski census was taken. I am descended from Eli's brother, William Smith Gaskill. I would very much like to find living descendants of Eli Gaskill Jr. who might fill in the missing blanks. I can be emailed at MMer2000@aol.com Thank you. Kathryn Mereness

Sara, I am a descendant of Eli & Hannah Smith Gaskill thru their son William Smith Gaskill who married Jane Hutson. I have accumulated quite a bit of information on the descendants of Eli. I also have all his estate documents from the Clinton Co., OH courthouse. I am very interested in knowing about the lives of Albert Gaskill and his children. I am also looking for information on the birthplace and parents of Hannah Smith. I would be happy to share what I know about Eli's descendants. Please email me at MMer2000@aol.com. Thanks. Kathryn Mereness
